The past seven days have been some of the most dramatic of the season, with the fixture list under threat from gales, falling masonry and the prospect of strike action โ€“ all this on the eve of Gameweek 29 being torn apart by FA Cup Quarter Finals. We look back at the Fantasy Football Scout community’s reaction to the week’s events and the discussion on the blanks and double Gameweeks to come. As ever, we also catch up with all the ongoing community tournaments, plus take time out to sift through some of the communityโ€™s early advice for those playing the newly launched beta of the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League game.

The Hottest Topics

Tuesday was the most anxious of days, as the community waited on the fate of the Fulham vs Liverpool clash โ€“ a fixture that hung in the balance thanks to potential strike action. Thankfully, Fantasy managers, and in particular Daniel Sturridge owners, were able to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The strike was called off, the game went ahead and the Liverpool striker notched up another huge points haul. But, as Bsloebadgerโ€™s post shows, if the game had been cancelled, there would have been some very strange formations this week among our depleted squads. Rasping Drive, who was staring at a potential 2-4-2 formation, was among the relieved masses.

While the threat of strike action looked to be our major concern at the start of the week, mother nature was to prove a far more threatening foe. Wednesday night saw Evertonโ€™s Goodison clash with Palace postponed due to storm-damaged buildings, while the gales also scuppered Cityโ€™s meet with Sunderland at the Etihad. The fallout was certainly felt by the community, with Leaf amongst the biggest sufferers โ€“ he was seven players down thanks to Wednesdayโ€™s winds. Meanwhile, Yes The Sess was among those lucky souls to emerge smelling of roses – Laurent Koscielnyโ€™s points off the bench courtesy of the clean sheet for United helped a good few to a respectable Gameweek, despite the unforeseen blanks.

While we ponder just how Wednesdayโ€™s damage will create double Gameweeks down the line, the weekendโ€™s FA Cup results will also lead to inevitable postponements in Gameweek 29. Buk IIโ€™s post proved one of the most popular this week as he calculated the probabilities of each Premier League fixture being cut from the Gameweek schedule. RabMac was also on hand to offer some sound Gameweek 29 advice – saving transfers to deal with the fallout of missing games topped his list.

Bsloebadgerย was on a roll this week with a further hot topic, this time focusing on an unlikely source of potential points โ€“ย namely Norwich Cityโ€™s key assets. He points out that, despite current form, their schedule, featuring home encounters against Stoke and Sunderland, makes them worthy of a punt.

Meanwhile, Tottenhamโ€™s next two plum fixtures (nor, CAR) sparked interest from James Collins, who has his sights firmly set on Emmanuel Adebayorโ€™s run of form, while Von Ryanโ€™s Express likes the look of Paulinho as a midfield differential.

This week also saw the launch of a Beta version of the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game. Opening its gates on Saturday, the community was quick to set about constructing their 25-man squads for this spiced-up version of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Itโ€™s not just the squad size thatโ€™s different to the traditional FPL game, the scoring also has some interesting tweaks, with extra points awarded for key passes and other performance stats. Studley was among those on hand to offer some guidance โ€“ย his excellent spreadsheet on the point differences between players in the FPL and UFPL games proved a big draw. By the way, weโ€™ve set up a Fantasy Football Scout league in the UFPL for those underway on the beta โ€“ the code to join is 1305-459.

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham Hotspurs has emerged as the stand out manager in Heelsoverheadโ€™s Worst to First โ€“ 2 Million + Club โ€“ the tournament for FPL managers who suffered an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks. Heโ€™s been on the rise ever since and currently holds an impressive rank of 3,603.

TorresMagicโ€™s Last Man Standing league lost 22 managers this week, with 138 now remaining. The Missing Link leads his โ€œAfter Xmas Leagueโ€, while Beric heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64 competitions. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Gameweek 26 saw myself reclaim the FFS Moderators and Contributors league lead and continue in front of the FPL part of the communityโ€™s Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the competitionโ€™s Sky Sports and Metro leagues, respectively.

DonTheSpecialOne continues to lead the PuffinBoy Memorial Cup, named after one of this siteโ€™s first posters. His rank of 147th is looking unbeatable among the competitionโ€™s old guard.

Some late news came in last weekend, which thankfully we have time to squeeze in this week related to Thomassโ€™ Big Bash League. He is delighted to announced that he and Giggs Boson‘s team has won the final against d1sable and BlueLion‘s team.

Need some help guys. Who to captain for week 27? Please note that i cannot change my team:

Hazard (vs. Everton), Gerrard (vs. Swansea), Ozil (vs. Sunderland), Dzeko (vs. Stoke) or Jelavic (vs. Cardiff)?

All fixtures are at home bar Jelavic.

    Thanks.

Thanks guys. Was also thinking Gerrard in terms of consistency. @ Zan, really wish i could acquire the services of SAS but aside from regular fantasy BPL I have another league with my mates where we draft players in the beginning of the season and keep them the whole season. I highly doubt my mates will part with Suarez or Sturridge at this point.

I think I'm going to go 4-5-1 for GW 29, just Rvp up top and bench SAS. Can do it no hits with erik or one hit if I swap him this week which I think I will do, possibly even for paulinho
    Team would be
    Boruc
Cahill, Ivan/azpi*, west ham / Olson*, ward
Hazard, lallana, paulinho*, Zaha/ Nolan*, Adam
    RVP*
    *= need to bring in

    Bench: SAS, Coleman

Can't find a decent replacement for SAS other than ade but away to Chelsea hardly seems worth it

What do people think? Anyone else thinking of benching SAS, or is it mad to have £24m sat on the bench then away to Man U immediately after?

Benching them is fine, I think people will regret selling Eriksen before the blank weeks. SAS was Suarez and Sturridge until people adapted it to include Aguero.

The original and still best SAS was Sutton and Shearer ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've seen your hot topic on this LR, but having a rotation risk going into GW29 is risky, I have strong suspicion he won't get picked for a tough away fixture like Chelsea, no one knows of course but paulinho is nailed on, looking in good nick playing very attacking and I back him to out score Erik by more than 4 over the next 3-5 weeks

I'm not saying that Eriksen should not be sold or that he will play, just that he has more chance of points than a player with no game so keeping him makes sense if you can't otherwise field 11

You can always field 11 if you take hits. So the question for me is whether it is worth a hit to replace Erik. With 2 matches before GW29 and 8 matches after I think I can find a player who is more nailed on will make up the 4 pts

Fair point but I'm not looking past gw29. After that, selling him for someone with a dgw is great. It's a gamble either way, if you take a hit and he starts gw 28 and 29 you probably will lose out. I'm keeping him and banking the four points.

Im in the school of thoughts that Erik can no longer be relied on and it is worth (effectively) 4pts to get him out, I will be

Having said that you have 7 other decent attackers and can bench him this week to see if he is dropped or rested. Only obvious other move then is to replace Chester for someone with fixture 29.

At some point you need to lose 3 of kos, Coleman, Yaya, silva S&S but you will have 3ft left over to do it if you just use one this week and other than Coleman they all have great fixtures this week and Coleman has great fixtures 28 and 30 so personally I am keeping through the blank. You would need to take one hit to field 11 if you lost Erik, if he is dropped then it will be worth it

Do you only have one transfer?

If you plan on having Sturridge for the medium/long term and sitting him out for his blank, then go for sturridge, no other striker is as in form as him.

Lambert is a bit punty and I think he's the most attractive striker for less than 9m at the moment.

          In my humble opinion,

Lambert > Adebayor now, we've both missed the Ade train.

          Lallana > Mirallas > Ince.

          Keep Yaya this week.

    Is Vlaar -> 4.5 worth a hit in gw29?

He'd have a dgw later if I keep, albeit including City away. Max realistic gain will only be 2 points, better to just field 10?

I'm selling AJ this round.. Hoping Hammers will play in GW 29, in that case Nolan is my replacement. If they don't play I've narrowed it down to Adam, Zaha, Snoddy, or Lallana*. Already have 3 Soton players so Lallana is unlikely as I need to do two transfers to get him in. What are your thoughts lads?

Forgot about Zaha, he's a real possibility especially with him playing FUL in GW29 and HUL this GW. Adam's fixtures are not good enough IMO, you can't "afford" two transfers to get Lallalana so... Snoddy vs Nolan vs Zaha.

I think I'd go Nolan (if they play GW29.) If not Snod for set-pieces.

People who still have WCs - when are you planning on playing them?

I know received wisdom in the past has been to save transfers to load up on DGW players, and then use your WC to offload them afterwards. With the weather disruption last week and the chaos of GW28 & 29 coming so close together, though, I'm thinking GW30 might be the optimum time to play it. Squads may well be filled with players from teams you don't really want much long-term coverage for (WHM, CPL, SOT, NOR) in order to field 11 on GW29, so chances are people will want to offload them.

On the incoming side, there'll be a few teams at that point with at least 2 DGWs to be sorted (MCI, SUN, EVE) - personally I want 3 City (including Kun), Johnson/Ki & Mannone, and to add Baines and/or Mirallas to Coleman in my squad, so striking while the iron's hot immediately after the GW29 blanks may well be the best way to get these kind of players in. Thoughts?

Gerrard staying on the park yesterday was a complete farce. If the player making the challenge wasnt an Englishman he would have been off imo. In addition, if the referee was foreign it would have been a second red.

The penalty decision was just as bad from a refereeing point of view. Horrible thats we're talking about it the next day. Liverpool were unlucky but fair play to Arsenal, got to ride your luck when you get it.

I didn't see the incident, but by reading things on here and on Facebook, Webb has bottled it. I also read that he didn't give a penalty which he should have and if h had given that, then Gerrard was off. You shouldn't have to be doing those sorts of things. Get it right the first time, ffs.

Yeah. Wanna keep them both, and am against making a transfer as we have lot to think about in next little while. Norwich could be 0-0, but more likely 0-2. Chelsea could well struggle to score more than one goal, IMO, and Coleman can always assist, etc. So Coleman for his attacking threat, and the like...? ๐Ÿ™‚
