Our weekly focus on player recommendations for the next four to six Gameweeks is rolled out once again today. We analyse the main movers and shakers in this week’s update, with the upcoming blank Gameweeks playing a significant part in our thinking. The full listings per classification are available on the sidebar on your right:

The Defence

With home games against Southampton and Hull (subject to FA Cup results) supplemented by a trip to Stoke in the next four, West Ham’s Adrian retains his spot in the top three for keepers after an incredible run of five clean sheets in six. James Collins also climbs the defender standings and, if he holds onto his starting berth, looks a bargain at 4.2, though Winston Reid’s return to fitness may be enough to deter some investors.

John Terry’s current muscle injury allows Chelsea team-mate Branislav Ivanovic to jump to the top of the defender standings, though the Serbian has more than merited his climb after racking up three successive double figure hauls. Petr Cech is also one to consider, with Jose Mourinho’s backline proving virtually fixture-proof in recent weeks on the back of just three goals conceded in the last 10 Gameweeks. Chelsea have a full quota of matches over the next four, with home games against Everton and Spurs in addition to trips to Fulham and Villa.

Three home games in the next five (TOT, STO, SUN) elevate Norwich pair John Ruddy and Martin Olsson in this week’s refresh. Chris Hughton’s side have notched three successive clean sheets at Carrow Road, including a shut-out against City – Ruddy is now up to third in the FPL keeper standings whilst Olsson, at 4.2, offers guaranteed game time at a budget price.

Everton pair Tim Howard and Seamus Coleman face an upcoming trip to the Bridge but after that, expect their stock to rise The subsequent five fixtures (WHM, (blank) CAR, SWA, ful) suggest the Toffees look primed for significant investment – a single clean sheet in 11 somewhat tempers our enthusiasm over defensive returns, though Coleman’s eye for goal could well come to fruition as the Merseysiders go on the attack.

Cardiff’s David Marshall and Steven Caulker will be buoyed by a clean sheet last time around and have home games against Hull and Fulham in the next three to boost their appeal, whilst, addition to facing the Bluebirds, the Tigers budget duo Allan McGregor and Curtis Davies also have Newcastle, West Ham (depending on the result of their FA Cup replay with Brighton) and West Brom on their agenda over the next five.

It’s fair to say Newcastle’s form hasn’t been the best but the upcoming schedule brings Tim Krul and Mike Williamson into our thoughts again. Alan Pardew’s side entertain Villa and Palace in the next five, whilst trips to Hull and Fulham somewhat atone for a Gameweek 29 blank, with Williamson, at 4.4, offering a decent short-term budget option for our five-man backlines.

Home games against Hull and Cardiff, allied with trips to Swansea and Hull in the next six, suggest West Brom duo Ben Foster and Gareth McAuley could be set for an upturn in fortunes as Pepe Mel looks to remedy a run of a single clean sheet in 16 matches. Elsewhere in the midlands, Villa pair Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar remain relatively low but have a trip to Newcastle and home games with Norwich and Stoke in the next five Gameweeks to boost their appeal. At 4.3, Vlaar’s propensity for picking up bonus is another factor worth considering.

The Midfield

Eden Hazard holds steady at the top of the midfield rankings in this week’s refresh – Chelsea’s FA Cup exit has ensured he now has a fixture in every Gameweek from here on in. Yaya Toure and David Silva, however, take a temporary tumble as a result of City’s upcoming Gameweek 28 and 29 blanks.

Southampton skipper Adam Lallana climbs up to second, with form and fixtures firmly on his side. The 8.0-priced midfielder has produced returns in eight of the last 10 Gameweeks and now has West Ham, Palace, Norwich and Newcastle in the next six to continue his ascent up the Fantasy standings.

A goal and assist in his last four suggests Robert Snodgrass is starting to find his form. The Norwich playmaker comes in at just 5.9 and may well be poised to take advantage of the above-mentioned run of fixtures. Kevin Nolan is a non-mover as we await the fate of West Ham’s Gameweek 29 clash with Hull but, with two braces in his last three appearances, the Hammers skipper’s form merits his climb, even if he may be poised for a blank.

Steven Gerrard’s relentless consistency ensures he remains in the mix. The Liverpool skipper has now served up a goal or assist in 14 of his last 17 appearances and has a plum home clash with Swansea up next before he makes his way to St Mary’s to face Southampton. Raheem Sterling offers a cheaper alternative to his captain (5.6 to 9.0) as a route into Brendan Rodgers’ free-scoring side and has now started each of the last 14 Gameweeks to dispel any fears over the threat of rotation.

Tom Ince and Wilfried Zaha rival Sterling in the mid-price bracket. Crucially, both have Gameweek 29 fixtures – whilst Zaha has the kinder short-term schedule, Ince’s role in “the hole” produced a goal and assist on his debut for the Eagles, though games against United and Southampton in the next three may deter would-be investors.

Fit-again duo Pablo Hernandez and Paulinho are back on the radar after making impressive returns for Swansea and Spurs respectively. The former has three assists in his last two appearances and has home games with Palace, West Brom and Norwich in the next six, whilst Paulinho has scored twice in the three appearances and now looks the best route into Tottenham’s midfield, with Christian Eriksen dropped last time around.

The Forwards

Daniel Sturridge knocks Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez off the summit after racking up seven goals in six appearances since returning from injury. At 10.1 to the Uruguayan’s 13.4, Sturridge is not only proving better value but is now outperforming his fellow forward and has eclipsed Suarez’ scores in four of their last five starts together in Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3.

An average of 7.7 points per game under Tim Sherwood ensures Emmanuel Adebayor remains high in our thinking, whilst Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez, like the Tottenham frontman, also have a Gameweek 29 match after their cup exit to Sunderland. With two goals, a pair of assists and five bonus points in the last three, Lambert’s form sees him climb above his team-mate in the reckoning, with free-kick and penalty duties also heightening his appeal.

Having scored in three of his four appearances since returning from injury, Robin Van Persie has wasted little time in finding his form. At 13.6, though, the Dutchman hasn’t been explosive enough to justify his price tag, with just three sets of double figures all season – nonetheless, with Wayne Rooney toiling, he looks the best bet up top for United, though a trip to Palace, followed by a blank Gameweek 28, is hardly enticing.

Newcastle’s Loic Remy is back in contention after serving a three-match suspension. Having scored in just two of his last 11 appearances, he’s hardly in the best of form but the Magpies above-mentioned schedule could prove profitable for the 8.0-priced Frenchman. Both Olivier Giroud and Christian Benteke are similarly-priced but a lack of form forces both down the rankings this week, despite their guaranteed game time.

Norwich forward Gary Hooper and Stoke’s Peter Crouch are your options further down the price bracket. Priced at 5.8, Hooper certainly has the fixtures to remedy the form which has harvested a single strike in 10 Gameweeks. Crouch, at 5.5, has notched a reasonable five times in the last 12 and whilst games against City and Arsenal suggest the short-term schedule is somewhat against the Potters forward, he then has Norwich, West Ham, Villa and Hull in the subsequent four to take advantage of.

Have Koscielny and Sagna, thinking about getting Olsson.

After today, obviously, does it make sense before Arsenal Sunderland or not? Play Olsson against Tottenham or Sagna against Sungerland (with Kos)?

Keep (both of them) for Saturday's game, there's no need to rush. Arsenal's home defensive form is impressive.

        Cheers man!

Eriksen has some rubbish fixtures coming up. When I do get rid of him I would probably be looking to bring in Sterling (the kid has fantastic stats and tripling up is fine imo) or maybe Navas (not nailed on but will have a DGW).

If you're feeling punty I would do Benteke to Remy and captain the lad. (4 great fixtures & 1 blank in the next 5 is really good!). I would defo prefer Remy over Lambert!

Apart from that I'm struggling as the team looks solid overall.

            Adebayor instead then.

Ince could be a worthy punt. I would much rather have Zaha though, looked terrific in the cup. He was literally running the whole team and has Hull & Fulham at home in the next 5.

Can't say I've seen much of him, been a bit too busy to watch as much football this year (as is evident by my FF rank).

Dundee Utd have some great youngsters just now though. Ryan Gauld, John Souttar, Stuart Armstrong and Andy Roberston. Wouldn't be surprised if they end up in the EPL, particularly the first two. Bodes well for Scotland though (I hope)

Some lovely touches, not e usual Scottish 3 touch to control the ball player.
But do look a bit like an under 21 team in big league at times.
Would hope united sell some of these guys to right club and not just highest bidder, so many have been wasted going to wrong teams who don't focus on development and end up back up here or at lower standard

I have Benteke and am keeping for the next two weeks. I think Newcastle and Norwich offer some opportunities for him. He looked good in the last game and I thought he was unlucky to not get anything out of it. That said, I already 3 Southampton, including Rodriguez. You could then bring in Lambert after they play Pool.

Was reading tips on national club golfer website. Really good one for finding good EW bets normally.
Like the idea about betting outsider in all first round games

Good read. You know what, I genuinely considered backing every outsider because not many of them need to win to turn a profit. Coetzee vs Stricker for instance. Coetzee has a string of top tens this year and won 2 weeks ago, and I don't think Stricker has even played a tournament yet.

              That is a good one.
Last year this site tipped Coetzee , I backed him for a few tourneys and he only fell away on last day. His win was always coming on the right course.
They have been talking about young Brillo for a while and he has been getting amongst the finishes.
Also got a 50-1 finish winner last year, can't remember his name

I'm just not getting the rub of the green this year! LOL

No, after a couple of last day of the season mini league battles I decided to have a break this year. Until January when my GF asked me to take control of her work league in return for sexual favours. I would've done it regardless to be honest, but I couldn't say no to that offer!

Do we think the double blank will cause Yaya to drop in price? I can sell him now at 9.9, losing .3, but he may go down that much over 3 weeks anyway.

I'd be reluctant to sell Yaya this GW... I think he'll go down a little, but probably not much. I wouldn't worry about 0.3M, pocket change.

Well, it isn't just a money thing. I need to make these blank weeks count in terms of my ML. With a little planning I can have one or two more playing than my rivals and then can plug Yaya back in.
        Thanks for the input!

Yeah, planning is key. I wouldn't take out any City players for a hit for instance, as you'd want them back (maybe for another hit) as soon as the blanks are over...

I agree. Not taking hits through the blanks and doubles will be big as I think a lot of people will be more reactionary and take a hit or two.

I'm gonna guess Yaya drops to 9.8-9.9 by the time GW29 starts. 9-10 mil is a lot to leave on the bench for two blanks. That's how a lot of people will rationalize it anyway.

If he drops .3, anyone who pulled him in since mid-November would break even shipping him and bringing him back in. I can def see this happening.

Hi all haven't been on in a few days, I'm aware the need to bring in players with a GW in 29 and the possibility of DGW after that, (Palace United) have two free transfers and want to use one this week but can't find one to make! I know it's sounds mad but have a look.

    Mannone/Adrian
    Olsson Koscielny Evans Ward Chambers
Hazard Silva Mirallas Cazorla No one
    Rvp Adebayor Suarez

Silva and caz have a great fixture this week, really struggling to figure out were to use one!

Tough one. Mannone is about to have a nasty run of fixtures and Adrian might not have a fixture in GW29 so if you wanted to burn a transfer you could consider dropping Mannone for e.g. Boruc to ensure you have a GW29 keeper. I probably wouldn't do that though 🙂

I know don't particularly wanna lose Mannone, if hull beat Brighton in the replay WH don't have a GW 29? Didn't realise that. Could just do lallana in for silva and hope he does nothing. Very annoying!

I'm in the same boat. I don't really need to use a transfer this week but with two available I think I need to do something with it, given the blanks. I may bring in Olsson or Snodgrass and bench them this week. You already have Ollson so I agree with the guys above about bringing in a keeper.

Who though already have chambers, so don't fancy Boruc. I could use two and save next week to leave two again in 29? So hard to know what to do. Lallana and azpi in for silva and Evans/Ward?

I thought of that in my last post. Move out Mirallas for Lallana and then one other tranfer. But that's where it gets stuck. You wouldn't really want to get rid of Ward of Evans at this point.

That is a decent idea. Been looking at the fixtures and not very confident having SAS and no United. Might possibly go very brave and go with Studge - Kun - Negredo

                Very very brave.

I'm not saying I'll do it but I've seen a few people talking about Pool's fixtures coming up - Suarez probably isn't a great captaincy option which makes it questionable whether he's worth 12-13m (whatever your selling price is).

On the other hand, his stats haven't changed greatly since he was owning the game so I'm very nervous. I bought at 10.9 which is a huge amount of value to lose if I decide I want him back.

What do people think of Zaha as a short term AJ replacement?

    Pros:

-> Good short term fixtures with no blanks.
    (HUL - tot - FUL)
-> Attack-minded player with potential playing for an attacking manager.
    -> Cheaper than Snoddy/Nolan/etc
-> Not going to rise any time soon so can wait until deadline to make transfer.

    Cons:

    -> Is he nailed on?
-> Mediocre returns so far (4, 3, 2 in only 3 games for Cardiff)

so I think I'm nicely sorted for GW29. Relying on a Brighton win for a keeper though

    Adrian/no keeper

    Azpi, MOlsson, Shaw/Demel

    Mata, Nolan/Adam/Snodgrass, Noone, Puncheon, Hazard

    RvP, Adebayor

If West Ham have no fixture I may consider selling Demel, although ideally he's my route to Kompany

Much has been made of Ozil’s midseason slump, with fatigue often mentioned. Unlike Spain and Germany’s leagues, England has no winter break in its schedule. If anything, the matches come even more quickly, which is cited as a reason for his malaise. But Ozil isn’t really the problem; rather, it’s the talent that surrounds him. Ozil is a chance-creation machine, and his most effective weapon is the through ball. Aaron Ramsey’s early-season Johan Cruyff impression was the perfect pairing for Ozil’s wizardry, and Arsenal surged to the top of the Premier League on the back of it. Even when Ramsey wasn’t the recipient of Ozil’s distribution, his presence and movement opened up gaps in opposing defenses that could be exploited by striker Olivier Giroud. Without Ramsey, Ozil looks sluggish, and his form has dipped in terms of cumulative chance creation.

I think the problem as well is that Giroud is a slow, big target man. Ozil can get the ball to him but he just holds it with his back towards goal and then they rely on him to feed someone. Often there aren't enough other Arsenal players getting into the box with him. Would be much more effective if Ozil was sending nice little through balls to a pacey striker like Suarez.

      From an Ars fan.

The fact is, they combined excellently in early season, before the fatigue hit them both. But can you blame them with the amounts they play and how big their roles are? Giroud might deal better with the fatigue, but Özil has never used to playing full matches, let alone to play 90 minutes each and every match. Already when he was at Real, this was an issue. But Mou handled it, he took Özil off every second match or so, even more often, and didn't start him in all matches. As a result, Özil stayed fresh for the Spring time when big matches came. Wenger could rest Özil too, because he has Cazorla to play the same exact role. There's no need to play them both same time, rather to have one of them on field and fresh.

Agreed. I'm very surprised when I see Ozil starting every week. Wenger should really rest him and start Caz or even Rosisky in his place from time to time.

Özil has failed to create one single clear-cut chance since 10th December (included). That was before Ramsey's and Walcott's injuries. Özil was a wizard already in Werder Bremen, and I guarantee, every player in Arsenal's current XI would star Bremen. The team he has around him now has a lot of good, intelligent runners in it. Pod, Rosicky, Wilshere. This means simply that the chance creating machine is broken.

The truth is that it is just what it looks like: Özil is tired.

Best 4.5 bench mid to play GW28/29? I'm thinking Johnson of Norwich? Switching back to 3-4-3 with Ade in place of Eriksen after next week...

    Boruc
    Coleman Kosc Ivan (Ward Bruce)
    Johnson Mata Haz Yaya Eriksen
    Saurez Sturridge (Berahino)

    GW28 2FT's Johnson + Berahino > 4.5 + Adebayor

    Then Eriksen>Johnson GW30...

    Krul - Mannone
    Azpi - Kosc - Fabio - Kompany - Flanaga

    Dzeko - Sturridge - Suarez

I have 1.5 in the bank,1 FT and I am still alive in the Cup.

If West Ham have no fixture in GW29 I reckon I'll end up getting rid of Adrian or Demel with my spare FT. The issue is finding a defence with 2 decent fixtures in GWs 29 and 30 who can hold station in my team until Kompany/Zaba can come in for the DGW.

      Options:

I'm more likely to dump Demel than Adrian

I just gotta hope Mannone and Adrian don't get DGWs the same week.

        I already have 2 FTs

as it stands I'm only using 1 this week
only plan to use 1 GW 28
this leaves me with 2 still in GW29, so I can use 1 and still have 2 for GW30 (and probably get 10/11 out depending on the Adrian situation)
