Time machines and crystal balls were engaged this week as the Fantasy Football Scout community cast aside concerns on the immediate fixtures to look ahead at the raft of missing matches from Gameweek 29. Those looming blanks dominated discussion but there was also time for a controversial post calling for the community to dump the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game’s top scorer, plus an array of threads assessing Ultimate FPL strategies. The week was also notable for the launch of a couple of new unofficial community competitions surrounding the Scout Picks and an exclusive tournament for our “Deadzone” posters.

The Hottest Topics

With most of the FA Cup quarter-finals in place, the community was this week left staring into the chasm that is Gameweek 29 and pondering how we can navigate the void left by a series of postponements. Among those to lead our community through the tricky ravines was PIPP who, quick as a flash, was on hand within a few hours of last Sunday’s games to give us the low-down on those active and missing in action from the Gameweek. His quick thinking made it one of the week’s most popular posts, as he dipped into an array of issues, including UEFA and Premier League politics. Highbrow.

Scoredelario was another of our Gameweek 29 sherpas. He provided a cautious warning about coping with the Gameweek of blanks via hits. He urged the community to avoid spending points on lightweight players merely because they have a fixture in place. Bsloebadger was also on hand to produce a great little blank fixture survival guide, complete with key options from the teams that are set to be in action.

Innsie’s team-by-team, player-by-player analysis on Gameweek 29 was another popular draw, with Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam among the unlikely names being discussed. We also offered a list of those who could be great captaincy options for the week.

Elsewhere, our resident Sky Sports game expert, “D1sable”, is also riding high in the FPL game this season. He took it upon himself to look beyond Gameweek 29 and towards the double Gameweeks that follow: his post on the long-term Gameweek 29 strategies is well worth a read.

Amongst this week’s most controversial posts was Giggs Boson’s incendiary discussion on whether now is the time to drop Luis Suarez. A string of goalless performances, including another today in the win over Swansea, perhaps provide a compelling argument. At the time, few of our community seemed brave enough to part company with the enthralling Uruguayan but the goal posts have been moved again by Daniel Sturridge’s Anfield brace this afternoon.

This weekend marked the kick-off of the Ultimate FPL game Beta. This new in-depth pursuit looks ideally placed for dedicated Fantasy managers and in our UFPL hot topic we asked what early strategies the community was looking to adopt. Meerlight offered a timely reminder on the wildcard after three Gameweeks, urging the importance of focussing on short-term fixtures.

The Community Tournaments

In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues we saw ENR, Bootsy, Jonty, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17 and Koneheads take top spots going into Gameweek 27.

Meanwhile, @ocprodigy has started a new game based loosely on our very own Scout Picks. His idea is for the community is to compete against each other with their own weekly picks. Plus, those who score more than the Fantasy Football Scout Picks will gain an extra point. The full rules and point scoring system are explained here.

In addition, Innsie turned up again with another proposed distraction, aimed specifically at those posters active in the early hours of the morning UK time. The “Deadzone” as it is affectionately known is always full of willing participants from many timezones and Innsie has put forward an unofficial FPL tournament dedicated to those good folk.

Finally, a reminder that our Paddy Power Cup and Members Cups are still open for entry – we will close the gates on qualifying tomorrow but, if you’ve yet to get your name in the hat, you can still get involved. Click here for details.

Liverpool scoring freely but their coming fixtures are tough from a returns perspective.

Soton could be a tough nut.
United and Cardiff away, Spurs at home, West Ham away, City at home, Norwich away, Chelsea at home, Crystal Palace away.

Look at them, we know that West Ham, Norwich and CPL are defensively decent at home then City, Spurs, Chelsea and United at Anfield?

So, if I continue to score at the same rate that I have so far this season I'll end up with 2,293 points. That will be highest ever total score and in previous seasons it would have secured me a place really near the top of the overall rankings. In some previous seasons it may even have been a winning total.

So, that leads me to some questions:

    - Is this an easier season to score highly, and if so why?

    - Are you on course for your highest ever points total?

    - If you have managed to score higher in previous seasons, what allowed you to do so.... a Ronaldo / Lampard captain pick or something a little more left field?

Yes, it's an easier season to score highly. The players who have done well have basically continued to do so, if that makes sense? E.g. Suarez, Sturridge, Ramsey, Yaya, Hazard.

Baps favouring defenders, plus increase in number of baps handed out is a major contributing factor.

Did you captain Suarez for a month or so back there when he was getting you 40 points a week by himself?

The likes of Ramsey/Sturridge/Bony/Suarez/Benteke have all had streaks of high scores. So people that had them got lots out of them. Last yeah only RVP was really reliable, maybe Bale too.

It's unusual to have so many, plus I haven't mentioned the defence where a 0-0 can see 4 or 5 of them get 2/3 bonus. It all adds up.

Very much this. The BPS welfare state is a joke. They should have a threshold of 9-10 as a minimum to get baps themselves. At least ea ppi had enough scoring to not have so many players getting extra credit in insipid matches.

True, the system BAPs system needs to be tweaked again.

I wasn't around for all of the previous versions, but it seems to me that having a panel pick the top three players in each game may be best. It avoids situations where a player has run a game and gets no where near picking up bonus points due to not ticking the boxes for the stats. Also it means you only give BAPs to three players.

        What were the winning totals?

It was a bit of a punt as a statement based on the scores of a rival who regularly finishes in the top 10k. No real research on my part so I accept your far more likely to me right!

Eye opener really. Now in fact I'm confused of my accomplishments this season lol

First of all, I'd say yes to your first 2 questions. For the third, not too sure, but I've felt those seasons weren't too different from the current one, in terms of difficulty in gaining good rank (not in scoring)

      Consider these points

      1) It's my first season of full mental investment
      2) In amongst the last few seasons, I joined the FPL season somewhere in between GW 4-5 (was a true casual)
      3) My GW avg in last seasons has been in the late 50s, this season it is 62. So an improvement, but not by much. Has to do with more BAPS not difficulty in scoring probably.
      4) Some FPL players have consistently done well in the last few seasons (eg top 5k), and continue same form this season too.

Verdict: High scoring season statistically, but in terms of rank, it's still pretty consistent for a given player. I improved but it has more to do with a jump from being a casual to a serious player!

20th It's good for encouraging punts so you'll have much more variety in the squads. Not sure how the lack of transfers will affect things. Paying for loans etc is another layer of management.

Anyone thinking of downgrading Yaya > Silva?

Why would you do that? Both have a double blank?

        I wouldn't.

I'm thinking of doing the opposite.

Silva has consistently underperformed compared to Toure this season so I wouldn't.

Really? I was thinking the opposite! Silva has done nothing for weeks.

Nope. Biggest mistake this season for me was getting rid of yaya. Will be looking to get him back when doubles come round.

Am I wasting points getting rid of Eriksen? Need FT to get 11 out for GW29 so need to be fairly sure that he won't start.

      Silva to:
      A Adam
      B Lallana
      C Snodgrass

Tempted to do A IMO as it's a differential punt and I'll be dropping my WC ahead of GW 30 to take advantage of the doubles an run in so Adam will likely be ditched then.

      Help appreciated, thanks.

I would just bring in Lallana.

If it is a two week punt then I would go Snod over Adam. ARS and nor - not great fixtures.
