Fernando Torres strikes to earn Chelsea a draw in their Champions League clash with Galatasaray. Mesut Ozil is back in training for Arsenal, Jonjo Shelvey is ruled out of Swansea’s trip to Napoli with a hamstring problem, Tim Sherwood has worries in defence for Tottenham’s clash with FC Dnipro and Alan Pardew praises the weekend display of young left-back Paul Dummett:

Blues Earn Turkish Stalemate

For last night’s trip to Galatasaray, Jose Mourinho made just three alterations from the side that edged past Everton on Saturday lunchtime. The Blues boss drafted in Ramires for the cup-tied Nemanja Matic alongside Frank Lampard in the double-pivot, whilst further up the field Andre Schurrle got the nod ahead of Oscar, and Fernando Torres was selected as the lone forward ahead of Samuel Eto’o. Cesar Azpilicueta supplied the assist for Torres’ opener in the 1-1 draw, whilst Oscar and John Obi Mikel both recovered from injury to replace Eden Hazard and Schurrle as second-half substitutes.

After the match, Mourinho bemoaned his side’s inability to convert a number of chances:

“In the first half the game was our game and we had chances once more to kill the game. I am not critical of my strikers, because they gave a very good game. But overall when we got to counter-attacks situations, we are missing the last pass, the last control and the last choice. In the first half we had we have many occasions to do the second goal and the second goal would change completely the story of the game”.

The Blues boss also went on to discuss Torres’ contribution and admitted he subbed off the Spaniard midway through the second period due to a lack of match sharpness:

“Nando’s having a very acceptable season, he had two injuries in his best moments. The first was after he scored the winner against Man City and he was out for a month. After that he scored at Southampton and Hull, he had another injury but in the middle of that he was doing well and scoring some important goals. Today he gave a lot but obviously the gas was finished and I had to change him.”

The Scout Says: As his manager points out, Torres had started to develop a little consistency in the league prior to injury – scoring in three of his last four starts. Given the likelihood of rotation up top, though, there’s no guarantee his next start will be at Fulham on Saturday, with last night’s strike unlikely to be enough to persuade many investors this weekend…Once again, Mourinho’s back-four remained unchanged last night, with Azpilicueta’s attacking display maybe set to convince Fantasy managers he’s worth a punt. Priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the Spaniard is the cheapest option at the back in the Premier League’s tightest defence, yet is owned by less than 5% of managers due to a lack of attacking returns. With the Blues set for a trip to Fulham and home clash with Tottenham in the next two, interest in their options is picking up, though Lampard’s back-to-back starts perhaps raises a question mark over his place in the weekend XI at Craven Cottage – Matic’s expected return could see the veteran drop to the bench as Mourinho rotates in the middle.

Ozil Back in Training

The Arsenal playmaker confirmed via Facebook he has returned to full training ahead of Arsenal’s weekend visit to Stoke.

The Scout Says: Sidelined for last Saturday’s win over Sunderland due to a thigh injury, Ozil’s absence saw the Gunners register one of their most decisive displays of the season. Having peaked at 10.8 in FPL, a woeful run of form has seen the German’s price plummet to 9.7 after he returned a single assist over his last eight league appearances. Ozil’s loyal 13% of Fantasy owners may be convinced to hold for this week, then but, with a blank Gameweek 29 preceding a dire run of matches (tot, che, MCY, eve), Arsenal’s main assets are likely to be earmarked for the exit door until a kinder run from Gameweek 34 onwards.

Shelvey Out of Napoli Clash

Garry Monk has ruled Jonjo Shelvey out of contention for this evening’s Europa League trip to Napoli. The Swansea boss – who is hopeful Michu will be back training this week – went on to confirm he is optimistic of a weekend return for Shelvey at home to Crystal Palace:

“Jonjo has a slight hamstring so we are not risking him for Thursday, but he should be available for the weekend “.

The Scout Says: Shelvey’s long-range strike against Liverpool last weekend saw him arrive on our radars only for a hamstring problem to force him off at the break. The midfielder has netted in two of his last three appearances now, taking his tally for the season to five goals and four assists – providing he can prove his fitness, the 5.3-priced Shelvey may be a worthwhile differential to consider, with home games against West Brom and Norwich also on his agenda in the next five.

Pardew Praise for Dummett

The Newcastle boss took time out to laud the left-back’s overall display against Villa on Sunday afternoon.

“Young Dummett did terrific, I thought. He was under a lot of pressure to replace Davide. I thought he did very well. The set-plays were an up. We actually looked like we might score from a set-play because the delivery was very good from Dummett. That was a bonus”.

The Scout Says: With Davide Santon missing out due to a knee problem, Dummett was handed his second start in the last three league matches at home to Paul Lambert’s side. The return of Fabricio Coloccini helped the Tyneside team to their first home shut out since Gameweek 10, and with games against Hull, Fulham and Palace in the next four, Newcastle’s schedule offers optimism as Pardew looks to kick on from Sunday’s win. Obviously, much depends on the availability of Santon, but if Dummett can earn regular game time, a price of 3.9 and a fair share of corner kicks could help sneak him onto our radars.

Full-Back Concerns Grow for Tottenham

Tim Sherwood has confirmed that Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are both unavailable for this evening’s Europa League clash with FC Dnipro. Walker remains sidelined with the hip injury that forced him to miss Sunday’s loss at Norwich, whilst Rose picked up a knee problem in the Carrow Road defeat. The Spurs boss is also without Younes Kaboul for tonight’s clash but remains hopeful the centre-half will be fit in time for the weekend game against Cardiff at White Hart Lane.

The Scout Says: With Vlad Chiriches also injured, Sherwood has a dilemma in defence if the current injury situation fails to improve by the weekend. Only two games ago, the Spurs boss named Walker, Kaboul and Rose alongside Jan Vertonghen in the 4-0 romp at Newcastle but could be forced to operate with Kyle Naughton and Ezequiel Fryers either side of Vertonghen and Michael Dawson. Ironically, Dawson looks to have benefitted from the injuries just when it appeared he had lost his first-team place – a potential return for Kaboul could see Vertonghen shifted to left-back in order to cover for Rose’s potential absence. Nonetheless, the north London club will be heavily backed to register a clean sheet, given that the Bluebirds have drawn blanks in five of their seven league fixtures under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Michael Dawson is doing a Ryan Taylor from a few years ago - benefiting from a constant stream of injuries to others to retain his place all season despite not being first choice.

To be fair it's a good job they didn't - they've needed him for the lion's share of the season with injuries to Rose (forcing Vert to LB), Kaboul and Chiriches. They'd have been fully screwed if they hadn't had him.

But then again AVB shouldn't have loaned out Assou-Ekotto. He was their only natural LB backup for Rose.

Yup, I spent the best part of a year posting on here telling people he was about to be dropped.

Step 1. I post "As soon as Simpson is fit Raylor will be benched..."
Step 2. Simpson gets fit and Raylor is benched
Step 3. Gutierrez limps off after 10 minutes and Raylor comes on OOP and scores.
Step 4. I post "As soon as Gutierrez is fit Raylor will be benched..."
        Etc.

        It was staggeringly frustrating.

And to compound matters he kept gettingf spawny assists, like him taking a terrible corner (because the first choice corner taker was injured), a defender heading it clear, and then a newcastle player getting the ball and hitting a world class shot from outside the box into the top corner.

I at least had the comfort of being a Newcastle fan so any assists/goals/clean sheets he got were good for me IRL, it must have been doubly galling for anyone who supported a team he was playing against!

Has playing FPL spoilt your enjoyment of simply watching a football match?

I can scarcely remember a time when I was able to watch a game without fretting about who was looking likely to score, whether a cross took a tiny flick off someone, etc. Even if I've got no players involved or it's a cup game I'm still thinking about rivals' players and potential injuries/suspensions.

Hard to believe I once watched football purely for its own sake!

for players that have a high ownership but you have missed the boat with regards to price rises, do you like to bite the bullet and buy at a higher cost to keep pace or gamble that their returns will dry up and you will gain ground that way.

Icing on the cake for me was when the midfielders starting bringing home the points, he then started talking up big defences. His head seems to be in the clouds, sorry Mark 🙂

Which is more important to you overall rank or your mini league position? Would you rather finish 10th in the world and fifth in your mini league or 75,000th in the world but first in your mini league by a distance.

Id be happy being in 2,000,000th place if it meant I came first in my mini league, the banter at work is soul destroying when you are behind. This means every decision i make is based on what my rivals are doing and not what would get me the best position overall.

Is it time to drop Granville from the Scoutcast team? Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan and he's provided much enjoyment but he's just been too injury prone lately me and I'm not sure I can handle many more Scoutcast blanks.

To steal one from Richard Herring:

Would you rather have a hand made of ham or an armpit that dispensed suncream?

      Notes:
You could eat the hand - it would grow back within a month. A little finger would grow back in a day.
Your armpit would dispense enough suncream each year for normal use for you and one member of your family. You could control the release of suncream as it suited you.

Will Mark and Granville approach next season in a different way? Many players have been consistent points scorers from the start. You could have picked Szczesney, Koscielny, Coleman, Yaya, Ramsey, Hazard, Lallana, Gerrard, Sturridge, Suarez, Aguero etc and barring injury they would have produced nearly week in and week out, why not bring those players in as soon as possible instead of going for Sessegnon, Moses, Snograss etc?

When picking goalscorers, should you prioritize stats or your personal judgment of their ability to finish? There's been countless examples of players with good shot stats that are guaranteed to drive you mad with their misses - Coutinho, Paulinho, Mirallas and Ben Arfa are examples. The ability to finish also varies over the season as players go in or out of form. Suarez arguably has had better stats than Sturridge, yet Sturridge's superior finishing of late can be seen by anyone who watches the games and has rewarded those who acted on it. Also: remember when Benteke was getting all the shots but couldn't score for toffee?

Mmmm what a goldmine, nice. Haven't quite taken it all in yet but entertaining to see Welbeck is at least statistically a rather good finisher now...

Wish there were percentages for shots in box on target and shots in box converted to avoid penalizing players who also shoot from range like Rooney and Suarez.

Mark & Granville appear to usually just pick some of the early suggestions from this list in chronological order and ignore all the later ones (unless there is an interesting one from Applebonkers).

Would it be a good idea for one of them (or Jonty) to pre-scan the questions before the podcast, in case there are some good ones among the later replies?

Have 2 FT this week and I'm thinking of doing
    Yaya->Snodgrass and Kosc->Coleman.

I have Yaya and I could be selling at 10,2.
If I transfer him out, I will be wanting him back for DGW31. That means using up two transfers.
Is using up two transfers worth it considering I would probably be bringing in a mid that is not guaranteed points.
Should I keep Yaya over his two blanks and suffer price falls or should I bring in a short term mid? who?

Want to use one FT this week to not lose it, but can't find any brilliant options. Was almost set on ditching Eriksen for Ince/Adam, but now thinking to hold on and hope he plays against Cardiff. So what think you:

I can't really afford Terry, Cahill or Ivanovic, is Azpi a decent alternative? He got forward last night but never normally seems to do, doesnt seem to get baps so all you are looking at is the odd 6 from him, is it worth it?

He is worth the money for sure but I would recommend finding the extra cash if possible

don't agree - as a general rule for defenders pick the cheapest sure starter out of a solid backline. Differential better spent elsewhere.

For me, attacking points for defenders are worth the extra cash all day long.

have a reliance on CS's is not something I consider when picking defenders. Annoyed I broke this principle when picking Demel over Collins but first and foremost you have to make sure they will start.

In previous seasons, yes, but this year a CS is worth 7-9 points for a defender who is in the hat for bonus.

In Azpi's case, he gets 6 points, whereas Terry, Ivan and Cahill get 7-8 on average

Add attacking threat and I think it's worth it

Tougher than it sounds. Looks like clean sheet city for Chelsea for the whole run in. But Komps/Zaba have 3 extra games (assuming they plays them all).

      B, just

Can't remember if I've tried tapping you up for advice on Silva? I can't decide whether I want him for the DGW or not.

    Szczesny (Mannone)

M Olsson - Coleman - Shaw (Ward, Bardsley)

Lallana - Nolan - Mirallas - Hazard (Sterling)

    Sturridge - Suarez - Benteke

    A) Bardsley to Ivanovic for a hit? And play Ivanovic instead of Olsson? (already did Navas to Mirallas) Plan on doing Szczesny to Chech for next GW.

    B) Something else?

    C) Stay put?
