As always, our regular Monday lunchtime piece assesses the weekend’s action as the likes of United and Cardiff hint at shoots of recovery, whilst City’s shock cup defeat against Wigan lessens their packed fixture schedule:

Chelsea are doing just fine for a team without any strikers..
Top of the league by seven points now, the Blues served up their most emphatic win of the season on Saturday evening by battering Spurs 4-0 at the Bridge. Eden Hazard may have only scored twice from open play in the last eight Gameweeks but Jose Mourinho’s side continue to move away from the chasing pack – last week Andre Schurrle was the hat-trick hero at Fulham, this time round Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba scored three between them as Chelsea took another step towards the title. With a defence that have conceded just four goals conceded in the last 13, Fantasy managers are being spoiled by Jose’s return to the Bridge – it makes you wonder just what next season will bring if he actually finds a striker that fits with his game plan.

Rooney’s finding his form..
While Robin Van Persie huffed and puffed and was subbed off without a single shot in United’s win at The Hawthorns, his strike partner stepped up for David Moyes’ side at the weekend. Rooney had notched just once in five appearances since returning from injury but a goal and assist served up the maximum bonus points in FPL to suggest he may just be set to return to the form that produced six double figure hauls in 10 appearances earlier in the season. With a double Gameweek 31 preceding an eye-catching run-in, Rooney could be back on our radars again.

United are showing signs of resilience…
The 3-0 win over West Brom helped United to a third successive league shut-out – incredibly, prior to Gameweek 28, they had failed to keep out their opponents in consecutive Gameweeks. With Nemanja Vidic edging towards the exit door, David Moyes has confirmed he’ll be looking to utilise the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans more often as he starts to plan with next season already in mind. United’s fixtures from Gameweek 31 onwards could well bring their backline into consideration.

Budget options at the back are being restricted…
The weekend’s five fixtures saw Fantasy managers potentially deprived of a couple of budget defensive options for the run-in. Calum Chambers had started 12 of the previous 14 league matches at right-back for Southampton but was moved to the bench against Palace as Nathaniel Clyne got the nod against his former club. In the same game, Jonny Parr was rested by Tony Pulis – similarly, his run of starts at left-back came to an end as Dean Moxey was drafted in. Both Chambers and Parr are available for under 4.0 in FPL but with question marks now hanging over their guaranteed game time, out options in that bracket look limited.

Solskjaer may yet save Cardiff…
The vital 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Fulham suggested the Bluebirds may still have enough fight left to beat the drop. Whilst Steven Caulker’s double from the back highlights his worth to the Cardiff cause, Solskjaer’s selection policy continues to frustrate further up the field – Jordan Mutch served up a 10-point haul in his first start since Gameweek 24, whilst Craig Bellamy and Wilfried Zaha warmed the bench as Fraizer Campbell was shifted to the left flank. Craig Noone looks the one attacking option that, when fit, is most likely to start in a midfield merry-go-round.

Fulham’s survival bid may rely on Mitroglou…
The Greek international failed to find the net in his first league start for the Cottagers but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Mitroglou had more attempts on goal and was also top for efforts inside the area in Gameweek 29 – Felix Magath may have concerns over the player’s ability to adapt to a relegation battle but he can ill-afford to do without the services of a striker who served up 17 goals in 19 appearances for Olympiacos prior to arriving in January.

Ince has quickly fallen out of favour..
The youngster’s immediate impact on his arrival at Palace looked to have handed Fantasy managers a valid budget option for our five-man midfields. Ince’s debut served up a goal and assist from the role in “the hole” but after a stint on the right in the Eagles’ next league match, he’s had to suffice with minutes off the bench. With Marouane Chamakh ruled out against Southampton due to a hamstring problem, Ince’s trickery looked the ideal weapon as Tony Pulis looked for a vital victory but, with Jason Puncheon returning to the right, Ince was handed no more than 25 minutes as Palace fell flat once again.

Hughton needs to wrap Snodgrass up in cotton wool..
The Canaries playmaker limped off against Villa in the previous Gameweek with a wrist problem – the fifth time this term he’s picked up an injury. Snodgrass recovered in time to serve up an assist in the weekend draw with Stoke, meaning he has now played a part in four of his side’s last five goals from Gameweek 22 onwards. Bearing in mind the Scot has missed eight of Norwich’s league fixtures already this term, Chris Hughton will be doing all he can to ensure Snodgrass steers clear of the treatment room – Norwich still have the fixtures firmly on side over the next five before a dire final four Gameweeks pits them against Liverpool, United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The schedule is catching up with City…
Yesterday’s shock home loss to Wigan in the FA Cup saw Manuel Pellegrini’s hopes of a quadruple finally brought to an end. City now attempt to reverse a 2-0 first leg Champions League deficit in Barcelona on Wednesday evening; fail to do that and they’re left with just the league to concentrate on. With 12 fixtures still to play in the final nine Gameweeks, City face a congested last couple of months – a potential exit from Europe would certainly help matters and lessen the likelihood of rotation as Pellegrini looks to roll out the big guns and address a worrying run that has seen his side score four times in their last five home games in all competitions.

Whoops, caught the bottom of the last page.

Remy or Lukaku? Which is the better option and why?

I think Remy is the better option over the next 4 but I have a few things that make me lean towards Lukaku. Lukaku gives me a captaincy option in GW30 and has another double later on. On the other hand, Remy has the better fixtures, is the main goal-getter in his team (whereas Everton can spread their goals a bit more), is on pens and is 0.2 cheaper which may mean Yaya over Silva.

I'm going Remy. Looking to take him out after the DGW for Aguero while I downgrade Mata so short term prefer his fixtures. Plus with being cheaper allows me more breathing room to wait until after City play in Spain to ensure no knocks to Yaya.

I keep coming back to remy out of the two, probably previous lukaku experience is an influence.
One thing need to factor in is possibility that Newcastle may start to holiday early, I know this doesn't usually come into play until a few weeks before end of season but never know with a team floating in no mans land

I had Lukaku in my sights in large part due to that second double, but given Everton's so so fixtures during the run in I'm currently thinking Remy, with a plan to swap him to Benteke at some point.

Looking at the following for the DGW. Pretty happy going without Aguero for this DGW, after will switch out Mata and upgrade Remy/ Lukaku.

How does this look? Any glaring weaknesses you'd be looking to change?

        Adrian
        Coleman Cahill Flanagan
        Yaya Nasri Hazard Mata
        Suarez Sturridge Remy/Lukaku

I've been thinking about it more and more, and I am beginning to be convinced that Aguero will play more minutes then we are all expecting, regardless of the schedule.

        - we argue over whether he would play against Norwich, stating that City could beat Norwich regardless. He served up 18 points.
        - City have a points deficit that they need to rectify to regain the lead from Chelsea, something Pellegrini probably has on high priority.
        - City haven't been scoring recently, even with other team members attempting to plug the failures. At the very least, he will play Aguero at some point to motivate the team.

Just my take, but I am feeling partially confident he will play a good amount of minutes, or even a single half of most matches. And he is capable of getting something from that short amount of time (a la sturridge). What does everyone else think?

On the bright side, I have a second free transfer, so if he does break, it is not the end of huge world.

Given Big Sam's reluctance to change the team when it has been winning, does anything think the loss to Everton will be the catalyst for Reid to regain his starting berth?

Or would dropping Collins/Tomkins for one loss be too harsh?

I think it's harsh but Allardyce is ruthless when it comes to team selections. I reckon we will see Reidy back in the starting XI this weekend. Collins is too slow and will get found out. We have been hiding behind the brilliant form of Adrian somewhat.

It seems an appropriate time given his reluctance before and would come in handy for the double - Reid owes me that much!

Is it mental to do Aguero, Toure and Kolarov in for Rodriguez, Mata and Terry over the next two GWs for -4?

Seems crazy to get rid of Terry but Kolarov is explosive and has 3 more games than Terry in the last 8 GWs.

Good point - I'd hope that with them out of the CL and FA Cup that team selection might be a bit more straightforward.

Reason I've clung to Terry all season (other than BAPS and goals!) is that he is absolutely nailed when fit.

The issue I have is that I can do the Toure and Aguero transfers but then I have to do another one to afford them. So it's Lallana to Nolan, Terry to Kolarov, Puncheon to Delph or something like that to afford it.

It's kind of a stick or twist approach to try and get a double figure ranking by season end.

And I have to make a 3rd transfer to afford the first two - I could do Lallana to Nolan but that feels equally short term.

Still, one game with Kolarov for 5m might be worth it seeing as he has such explosive potential at both ends of the field.

Plus, he does have 2 more DGWs on the horizon, even if he does only play 50% of matches.

I don't think he'll start any DGW's even if City have another 10. Pellegrini feels he has to give Clichy games, so he's forever shadowing him.

I'm not sure, with the team searching for goals and chasing Chelsea (added to the congested fixture list) I see both being rotated and for 5m I'm willing to grab half a City defender with a great long-range shot over the likes of Distin..

Clichy never seems to be that good...

Still the community has spoken: Keep Terry, no Kolarov.

Just trying to find the explosive differentials as never been in such a high position before and want to exploit it not settle.

Having suffered through the 0,1,1,0,15 pattern of LOLarov, I couldn't do it again. Too much uncertainty.

My two nearest rivals have already used their WC, so I pretty much know what their DGW team will look like except for one or two players.
Neither can afford aguero so likely to both get lukaku or remy, more likely lukaku.
Chances are one or both will do it this week as they both have ade.

With this in mind should I
A try and cover their move by bringing in lukaku knowing I can reshuffle with WC
B stick to planned move of mata out for toure

I can't work out what will get me most points that's the problem.
Trying to avoid losing any so I can have advantage of 3 or 4 more DGW players unless they take hits

I know it's not liked here but I've got a very high value ML this year and 'covering' my rivals' players once I got a 35 point advantage has worked out really well and ended up with them taking lots of hits and punts to try and overtake - resulting in them going backwards.

If you genuinely think there is nothing to choose between them then get the coverage.

I really don't understand the notion of never captain never bench Baines.

Not that people should captain him this week (although you could pick far worse) but if he gets an assist and likely clean sheet this week, plus bonus, then he'd be a great captain.

I'll agree that it should be never bench, but I'm proposing SCFCNB.
sometimes consider for captain, never bench. Rolls off the tongue too. SCFCNB.

                    Colback -> Noone/Mutch (would prefer a better 5th mid)
                    Zab -> Coleman/Baines
Davies -> A GK that could rotate with Mannone

Maybe donwgrade Nolan -> AJ if you need more money.

I've got Demel, so McCartney isn't a bad option. I like Nolan as well, but if you need that 0.5 extra to get Coleman etc, I'd consider Adam Johnsen over him.

My plan for GW31, no points hits required - DGWers in caps:

                  McGREGOR

                  COLLINS, CHESTER, Olsson

NOLAN, MATA, A JOHNSON, SILVA, Hazard

                  SUAREZ (c) STURRIDGE

                  Bench: Marshall, Fonte, Ivanovic, Chamakh

                  That's pretty tasty, right?!

This is what I mean though. At the start of last season he was in-form, scored really well for the first couple of games and then dropped away dramatically. Seems always to be the way for him.

I'm going Yaya and Nasri and no Aguero for this first DGW, think Nasri's injury made a big difference to City, think he's well worth the punt.

Quite surprised i've seen barely any mention of Zabaleta for the double. Surely the best option in City's defence and always a threat going forward.

Most people will have Aguero, Suarez, Yaya or Silva so getting City defender on top of that lot isn't necessarily easy funds wise.

Personally, I think Hull and Newcastle defences will score best in DGW31 and you can pick up Williamson for £4.2m and £3.9m.

I reckon Everton will be the biggest letdown that gw.

Usually one team in a dgw that people think will do well and ends up disappointing people. Everton unpredictable and form dipping. Plus huge rotation risks in midfield.

Put it this way, I wouldn't get rid of Chelsea players for Everton ones but thats just me. Some unfancied team is going to go under the radar and have a stonking DGW31 and few people will have their players because of stocking up on the big guns.

Yeah, I think I'd WC now - great team that.

Thanks man. But I have such a bad luck this season so I am afraid if I use now, somebody will get injured until DGW....

Can't afford Yaya, so Lallana + Ward to Silva and Williamson for DGW? Or would you go Navas/Nasri+Debuchy or other 5mil DEF?

Which pair do you think will score more points over the next 6ish GW's?:

                  A) Sterling & Sturridge (-4)
                  B) Lallana & Lukaku

Want to get Yaya and Remy in for Ade and Lallana, but that means I HAVE to make the Remy move today.

Too risky given his injury? (I can easily have him on the bench this week but he has to be fit for gw31 of course)

Seriously looking at 4-3-3 over the next few weeks ...

                    Who are your defenders?

I'll do 4-3-3 in the DGW with Baines, Coleman, Bardsley and Evra
