We’re half wondering what will occupy the Fantasy Football Scout community once Gameweek 31 has passed – probably Gameweek 34’s doubles. For now, however, it’s all about the next set of fixtures as the transfer options continue to be sifted, with the potential of Everton’s spot-kick specialist, Leighton Baines, coming under particular scrutiny this week. We also look back on discussions on the Sunderland back-four, midfield heavy-hitters and a string of differentials as double-Gameweek fever strengthens its grip. Elsewhere in our round-up, we drop in on the latest ups and downs in the community leagues.

The Hottest Topics

The agonising wait for Gameweek 31 has continued to produce a number of key dilemmas, the latest being the merits of swooping for an Everton defender in the light of the announcement of their Gameweek 34 double. The key decision being pondered last week was whether to draft in Seamus Coleman or opt for the pricey set-piece supremo that is Leighton Baines.

An emphatic case for Baines was put forward in our catch-up on defenders’ bonus points, while the debate around Coleman or Baines was also the subject of Keith’s discussion. He wondered whether Coleman was still creating the chances that made him such an attractive prospect at the start of the season; yesterday’s winner against Cardiff may well have quelled those fears.

There’s also a certain “theory” that threatens to dent Baines’ appeal. Our research showed that there is a correlation between Romelu Lukaku’s starts and a dip in Baines’ average points per game. R✪melu, however, was on hand to show that the devil is in the detail when it comes to the Baines and Lukaku hypothesis.

If you’re overlooking the Toffees rearguard, how about a cheeky punt on Sunderland’s back four for their double Gameweek? The community examined the Black Cats’ defence in some detail, with Kings of Lyon underlining the potential of loanee full-back Marcos Alonso.

Our midfields were also treated to some community love, with Your Mum’s Athletic stepping in to cast his eye over a trio of Gameweek 31 heavyweight options, David Silva, Steven Gerrard and Juan Mata. TW duly added that Samir Nasri is another option worthy of our consideration.

For those looking for something a little different, Vince ‘Newcastle’ Mcmahon asked for the community’s top double Gameweek 31 differentials. Among those being put forward were Newcastle’s Mousa Sissoko by Tinkerman , while Tommy J nominated Andy Carroll – a player who remained on the radar following yesterday’s strike at Stoke. There were further differentials discussed in Scroobius Mac’s hot topic only yesterday.

Finally, the week wouldn’t be complete without another discussion of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rules. This time around, it was the January Wildcard being dragged in for questioning. Torres Magic asked whether we should keep or ditch the New Year refresh, with a varied reaction from the community voices.

The Community Tournaments

With a score of 66, Gloria Kanchelskis was the Gameweek 29 winner of @ocprodigy’s Scout Picks Challenge, an FPL game which is loosely based on our very own Scout Picks.

Those who failed to qualify for our Paddy Power Cup, which resumed this weekend, have themselves their own cup tournament, created by AZ. Sadly, he was a first round victim in his own tournament, crashing out to Cowboy John who notched an impressive Gameweek 29 tally of 74 points. Jack1980, who registered 34 points, was the lowest scoring winner of the round. Those who found safe passage to the knock-out stages included DannyRex, Trust John, D1sable, BsloeBadger, Castiel, HamsterGod, @ocprodigy and Lazurus.

In Torres Magic’s leagues, 75 remain in his Last Man Standing competition following Gameweek 29 and six are yet to go broke in his Millionaire Club. The FPL Open first round saw some of our community regulars clash head-on, including Ronh vs Bouncebackability and Fresco vs GTS is under repair. There’s still time to enter TM’s Elite 64 competition, which is for those in the top 10,000.

Ahead of Gameweek 30, Gaz Downright held onto the Fantasy Football Scout’s Moderators and Contributors lead by a slender one-point margin. Similarly there was no change in the The Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, Gigging Order, In Like Flynn and Jonty topped its Sky, Metro and FPL components respectively following Gameweek 29’s fixtures.

it was an assist though.. atleast they've chosen to rectify it. the rule about not changing points etc after a certain amount of time is to make work easier for them so they dont have to update league tables, ranks etc twice. it does not affect us negatively or positively in any way. im glad that they are takin the trouble to do the updates etc again and put the assist in.. well done fpl

If you accept the right decision was an assist, then of course its reasonable to ignore that self-imposed rule to rectify an error. Its an exceptional circumstance.

They cant really do it after the next GW begins.. uptil then looks fair game tbh. nothin gets afffected really.. unless you rage kick a player out of your team cause of the lack of an assist or the price rises get affected cause of it(though this i guess is a fair point)

    Oh, hello.....

    "Important information

Suarez Assist. We are aware than an assist was not added for Luis Suarez in relation to Liverpool's first goal. While under normal circumstances no changes would be made an hour after the final game of the day has passed, following consultation with Opta, it appears that usual guidelines had not been followed and the assist was omitted from initial feeds. This is currently being rectified and the correct assist and any other points associated will be updated in the game shortly. We apologise for any confusion caused.

    Repost..

    http://www.myfootballfacts.com/Premier_League_Penalty_Statistics.html

For those interested in number of penalties awarded per season. Poor Everton dont ever get many do they 🙂 .. also this season has seen an unnatural decrease in penos overall and that is why Pool and Gerrard seem to stand out(though i swear they got more than 9). Going through it you can see why peno takers are so important for fpl. The likes of lampard, Arteta, Charlie adams had a lot of penos in their peak fpl seasons. one/two sides getting double figure penos every season seems to be par for the course

hehe 🙂 .. funny that im more proud about my Dann pick and the Baines/Coleman double though as it was either Dann + Coleman or Kompany + Ward and i decided to "risk" it with Dann. crazy fine margins

I don't have him for the same reason I've never had Yaya..As you know I base all my picks on stats with a hit a week..Neither of them show on the tables.

i am usually a stats man too. the past few weeks ive decided to ignore em and just go with my gut. in the short term ive gotten lucky. over the medium/long term the stats usually win (damn yaya 🙂 )

Colemans stats were appalling the last 4 weeks.. but then the opposition was bad too. and he did get a very very flukey goal i'll be the first to admit 🙂 .. Baines over Coleman for me if i could just have one even now

i was all set on waiting a week as my team was all set with the likes of Lallana, Boruc etc but said what the heck and did it a week early. 33 points more than my pre WC team and got the same players id want for the double. It was the right and logical decision to wait imo. i just got lucky

For all you fellow non Suarez captainers I've lodged a high court appeal to get the assist removed and H2H victories reinstated. I'm sure the judge will agree when they hear my point of view that it's terry, it's lukaku it's the vibe of the rules that we are talking about here.

    My DGW team.

    Adrian* Marshall
    Coleman* Cahill Shaw Burner Ward
    Haz YYT* Lallana Sterling* Hoolahan
    Studge* Suarez* Lukaku*

    Decided going to drop -4

    A) Lallana + Burner > Nolan + Baines
    B) Lallana + Shaw > Silva + Baines
    C) Lallana + Burner > Silva + Demel
    D) Lallana + Hool + Burner > Silva + Nolan + Demel (-8 and bench Haz for a week)

I got an e-mail reply back from FPL on the Monday morning after the JT "goal" that basically said "it's too late now"................

2 wrongs don't make a right though, and the right decision has been made and i didn't captain him.

It seems from what they've said that it was an administrative error rather than a judgement that it wasn't an assist. Given that there was no counter argument on the decision (JT's studs were nowhere near Old Trafford!), the integrity of the game has been protected on this one.

The Terry "goal" was entirely different though. Inexcusable as it was, the goal was officially awarded to Terry and could only be reversed by the independent goals panel review. I believe FPL is clear that it can't change it in these circumstances even if it is later overturned, which is in my view the most reasonable position to take.

By contrast, this assist is 100% an FPL matter and is not ultimately determined by an external panel.

Horrible gameweek, terrible Man United defeat, compounded by the totally bogus late award of the Suarez assist and subsequent further loss of ground... I hate Mondays.

Please RMDGWWCT and make me feel better...

    Adrian
    Coleman / Zabaleta / Dummett
    Yaya / Gerrard / Hazard / AJohnson
    Carroll / Suarez(C) / Sturridge

Subs: Mannone / Bardsley / Chester / Delph

0.2m in the bank. Any horrible gaps? Trying to plan for further DGWs too.
