Having looked at Brazil and Cameroon over the last couple of days, we turn our attentions to Croatia. Niko Kovac’s side get the tournament underway against the hosts on Thursday June 12 at 9pm, then square up to Cameroon six days later at 11pm before going head-to-head with their final opponents, Mexico at 9pm on Monday June 23.

Road to Qualification

Croatia’s qualifying campaign got off to a great start, with five wins in the first six, but they ultimately finished nine points behind Belgium in Group A after picking up a single point in their final four fixtures. Over the course of 10 matches, they scored just 12 times and conceded nine goals before parting company with Igor Stimac – Kovac was appointed in time for the play-offs against Iceland and led his country to a 2-0 aggregate win. They have since played a friendly away to Switzerland and drew 2-2 back in March this year.

Listed below are Croatia’s most regular performers over the qualifying stages, with play-off appearances also factored in.

Most Starts Stipe Pletikosa, Mario Mandzukic (12), Luka Modric, Darijo Srna (11), Ivan Rakitic (10), Vedran Corluka, Josip Simunic, Ivan Strinic (9)

Most Goals Mario Mandzukic (4), Eduardo (2)

Most Assists Darijo Srna, Ivica Olic, Ivan Perisic (2)

The Key Targets

There’s no doubt that Sevilla’s Ivan Rakitic (5.6 in FantasyiTeam) approaches the tournament in outstanding form. The midfielder has delivered 12 goals and 10 assists for his side in La Liga this season and with set-piece duties also boosting his appeal, he is set play a pivotal role in Croatia’s chances of making the knockout stages. Together with Luka Modric, Rakitic will form a central midfield pairing, bristling with creative talent at the hub of Kovac’s system, prompting their side’s counter-attacking style.

At the back, Josip Simunic misses the tournament altogether, due to suspension with Dejan Lovren likely to partner Vedran Corluka (5.4 and 5.2 in FantasyiTeam) at the heart of defence. Darijo Srna still looks the best bet, though – coming in at 5.8 in FantasyiTeam, he grabbed a goal and a pair of assists during qualification, whilst Corluka and Lovren also notched one apiece. The left-back situation is unclear with Danijel Pranjic and Ivan Strinic vying for the role.

The only outfield player to feature in all 12 of those matches, Mario Mandzukic’s Fantasy prospects are dented by the fact that he is suspended for the Group A opener against Brazil. The Bayern forward (priced at 9.2 in FantasyiTeam) is available for the two remaining matches, though, and with a security of starts guaranteed, will be desperate to miss up for lost time against Mexico and Cameroon.

The Long Shots

Most Fantasy managers eyeing up Croatia’s frontline will be more inclined to gravitate towards Mandzukic – potentially leaving Ivica Olic as a differential. Having served up 14 goals and five assists for Wolfsburg, he finished the 2013/14 Bundesliga season as tenth top scorer. Olic’s team-mate Ivan Perisic also hit double-figures in 2013/14, producing 10 goals and four assists and is another under the radar option. Those two come at at 8.2 and 5.9 respectively in FantasyiTeam.

Young Mateo Kovacic could be an option, if he can nail down a starting berth. Certainly, with Modric and Rakitic as assured starters in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1, the versatile 20-year-old could be shifted to the role in “the hole†behind a lone forward – Inter Milan team-mate Javier Zanetti has recently claimed that, with the exception of Brazil’s Ronaldo, Kovacic is the most impressive youngster he has ever seen in his 19 years at the club. At 5.5, in FantasyiTeam, he’s likely to struggle for investment, given Raktic’s similar price.

Off topic (world cup wise) but, we are constantly bombarded with transfer gossip, but as football followers and fans we know what will probably happen (75% chance of going ahead if not higher), with that in mind which transfer targets do we think will go straight into our FPL teams?

(These for myself are supposed transfers that look to be realistically going through)

Shaw/Hummels as ManU def, Costa as Chelsea striker, double up on Lovren & Lallana as Liverpool cover..... What if A.Cole decides to stay in Prem, would he be option for us (pending on where he goes/price of course)

I should've said, but certainly for me, Shaw would be an option as Yoonited def coverage (if was guaranteed starter)

Certainly loan wise, would/should be given first team duties & would add bit of class, if (& a big if) they decide to turn it on!

Bit of a mixed bag this one.

As a Chelsea fan it's great to have legends part of the club and retire right here. On the other hand, I'm wary that we don't become the next Manchester United where we become stagnant after a few years by squeezing every drop out of our ageing stars.

I've never played an auction game before, are they complicated? Do you have to have a vast knowledge of World Cup hidden gems and who should be valued at what price?

it's like a game of poker trying to guess what your rivals in the auction will do, who they'll want, how much they'll bid on them etc.
really popular players can go un bid on because everyone thinks, "ah, someone else will go big on him, i'll save my money for elsewhere." lahm and pirlo for example were totally ignored by 8 people in round 1 of the auction.

you can massively overpay on players thinking you have to go big only to find out no one else bid. or get amazing bargains, a tactic i used in euro 2012 was to get the reverse oop players for cheap, because rules and scoring meant being reverse oop didn't really make any difference. got david silva (classed as a striker) for 0.0m

How does the auction work, precisely. Like who bids when what and how the players end up in different teams?

you have a league chairman who sets a date and time for round 1 of the auction. in the mean time all the managers fiddle their bids for a team worth of player using the budget available. (no player prices but you still have a set budget to make bids from). you select a team worth of players and set the bids for each, it then auto-saves that. you can then come back as many times as you want and tweak it.
as soon as the round 1 deadline comes the computer does the work for you. all the bids you won get put in your team. if there is tied maximum bids then a pre-set random order determines the priority of who gets the player.
the the chairman sets a deadline for round 2 of the auction. say you won 6 players in round 1 you bid for the remaining number of players you need to fill your squad (in a valid formation) with the remaining budget. it all gets processed, you might then be done or need to go into a round 3. it repeats until all managers have their squads filled

but during a bidding round? I mean, I submit my 15 bids and then there's time to tweak them, but to know what to tweak, shouldn't I be able to see if someone else is bidding on same players or not?

waaaa. that's the whole fun and the challenge, not knowing how much people are bidding and not knowing who they are bidding on either

Not sure if that's the whole fun. Isn't the idea of auction that you can get into a bidding war? So, I start by bidding 12 for Neymar, someone one ups it, then someone tops that by 2, I raise the bid again, someone throws in a 20 and so on...

And I'm also not at all sure whether it would be less challenging to go on to bid on players against each other. Sure, you could react to get the Neymar that you want, but after a couple of rounds of bidding you have 40 out of original 100 for your last 13 players, while a good number of your rivals still have their whole budget to use.

So, gather the losers to play their own tournament, give it no prize money, but FIFA ranking points almost equal to those in the actual World Cup (only separated by a little differential that you get from advancing in the World Cup or this loser's cup), and make it up to 14 matches long (for those who advance the furthest) with long qualification system, and it's done. you can call it "World Losers' League".

Lets look into Direct Free Kick Takers list of Top 8 PL clubs last season.

    City- Yaya Toure, Silva
    Pool- Suarez, Gerrard
    Arsenal- Cazorla
    Everton- Baines, Mirallas
    Spurs- Eriksen
    United- Rooney, Mata
    Southampton- Lambert
    Chelsea- Luiz!?

Even relegated Norwich had an excellant Free Kick Taker in Robert Snodgrass. How come a big club like Chelsea who finished 3rd in the league don't have a "proper" direct FK taker? Whatever happened to Eden Hazard who used to be "decent" at it if not extra-ordinary in his Lille days. How come he never takes it? This is one major problem that Jose & Chelsea really need to work on in training & friendlines ahead of next season.
