We now turn our attentions to PlayON, who have just launched their new site for the World Cup at www.playon.co. The team at PlayON have been working hard behind the scenes over the past year building this new site and have launched it ahead of Thursday’s opener between Brazil and Croatia. We’re delighted to announce that we will be supporting their game over the summer:

Some of you may already be familiar with PlayON – a game powered by Opta stats that we covered over the previous domestic campaign. In this new site there are plenty of new features, with Gameweeks being run for all groups and each individual group for each round.
If you’re new to PlayON or simply require a re-cap, don’t worry. In an article tomorrow we will look at how to select your squad and also cover the rules and points scoring systems, whilst we’ll also be on hand to roll out a new Player Picks article prior to each Round’s deadline – giving you a heads-up on any potential bargains before the next batch of matches gets underway.

Crucially, PlayON differs from many other Fantasy games in that the player prices alternate in accordance with their previous displays over the tournament. This means that looking for bargains is never the same from one Round to the next – Kevin de Bruyne may be cheaper than Eden Hazard to start with, but a strong performance for Belgium’s opener with Algeria would see the former’s price rocket in time for Round 2 and perhaps force his previous owners to look elsewhere.

PlayON is also a betting exchange so you can put your money where your mouth is. There are one-on-one and multiplayer games on offer and you can also take on Ambassadors such as Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand, the Fantasy Football Scout and Opta Joe. There are also new game types and pay-out structures in the new site, as well as a leaderboard which adds together your top five Gameweek scores over the course of the World Cup, with the top finisher winning £500.

For now, though, head on over to PlayON to check out their new and improved website – you can select whichever Gameweek you want to play from in the menu in the top left. Keep any eye open over the next few days as we ramp up our coverage closer to the big kick-off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Some bold calls but I like it.

Srna is someone I wish i had room for. Like the Drogba call too, their group seems very up in the air, could really pay off.

    Strategy Thoughts on McDonalds Game

Alright so now that I've had a few days to mull over the rules, look over the prices, develop an idea of what this game is like, I've got some insights I'd like to share about the McDonalds game and what I think are the key factors.

    1. Look over the 2010 scoring. Billy Ketsu put together a great spreadsheet on how players scored in 2010. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZwnxAemiNSJtA5Dw-VhnEF64ofBXihMFMmlp86nvdHM/edit#gid=2117678016

The key things to take away from this are that scoring is fairly even across positions including defenders and goalkeepers. Recovered balls are tallied differently to the UCL game so Chiellini won't be hoovering up 15 points a game, but will still be scoring well. The rules are fairly similar to 2010 and I don't anticipate there being a huge difference in point structure.

    2. Twenty-three man squad makes team building a little different. This was the big thing I had trouble with getting my head around at first. You'll want to fill up your squad with as many 1m players as possible, and here's why. Presumably, like at the last cup, you won't be able to pick players who are eliminated after the group stages. Player prices don't change either, so you'll want to have maximum budget flexibility come the knockout rounds. 1m players are key in allowing flexibility and should all be taken especially since we only get 11 scoring players. Personally, I've built an FPL-esque squad of 15 players and 8 1m players as budget fillers (3x algeria, 3x Iran, 2x Honduras)

    3. Formations. Since player scoring is fairly even across all positions, there are also more viable formations available. Most players are defaulting to the FPL 3-4-3, but I think there's a case to be made for 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 or even 4-3-3. Personally, I've decided to go 4-4-2 because of a few reasons. I've allocated one "substitute spot" for each position (a group G or H player who can come on if a certain player does not score well). If I were to stick with 3-4-3, I'd need 3 top notch strikers and a 4th decent sub which is hard on the budget. There are a number of excellent 4.0m defenders to choose from and this to me indicates playing more in defense especially with the more even scoring across positions is likely to pay off.

    4. Setting up across matchdays. Basic UCL concept, but have players from Groups G and H. Algeria has blessed us with 1m Group H starters whic are great if you have a player who went off injured or scored abysmally. I like Belgium the best. They are a good side, good fixtures in the last group. Having 1 in each position means you have a last minute sub whenever you need them.

We still don't know some details about the game like mid round formation and captain changes, but we know enough to figure out a basic squad I think. I'm playing the game until I hear otherwise like the formations are locked for each round. If you look at the interface of how players are subbed in and out, it looks pretty locked to me. Neymar out, Lukaku in. The arrows only allow striker > striker swaps so I think it's safest to play it that way. Hopefully we'll hear more soon though.

Whatever the case, I'm super excited for the World Cup, and good luck to all!

He could do for the first game yeah, Susic isn't likely to play 2 strikers vs Argentina, and Misimovic doesn't offer much defensive work. So could be Besic, Medun and Pjanic in the middle with the two wide players and Dzeko

      2. How many points are offer in four final phases compared with the groups? Is it actually that worthwhile bast@rdising your team in the groups just to save a few million in the finals? The way I see it the 1M players have very little value even taking into account the added value you gain at the later stages.

I have a fair number of 2.5's. Thats the lowest value where players actually offer something imo. I still have a fair degree of flexibility as a result.

Same here. I could stretch it and get in more star players but any players can let you down. And the more they cost, the harder it hits you.

Where to start? Those 1m players, 3 are from Algeria and will start. That's pretty good already. Also, even with 8 slots taken up by 1m cost players you still have 15 players to work with. Depending on formation, you should have a very good sub at each position PLUS the super backup in the Algerian 1ms.

I see no reason to make those slots pricier players when they give good value, playing potential and support for the knockout rounds. Picking say a 2m or 2.5m player who is 2nd defensive sub will often be $$ wasted on the bench.

The Algerian defenders are worth having but the starters are more than 1m. Bentaleb's a good pick but if you've got the two defenders and the keeper you're over the quota. It's Iran I don't see much value from. All of their 1m players could be upgraded for slightly more to decent options like Konno or one of the Greeks in defence, or one of the Hondurans in midfield. The uber-cheap strategy might work, but it's not for me.

I think the beauty of the 23 man roster, day to day subs, and no transfers in group stage lends to quite the opposite strategy of current FPL. By covering squads - different days, different opponents-, different types of scoring players for match ups, etc...you can gain a large advantage IMO. If you play it straight and fixed (more 1m players) your opportunity decreases on maximum pts.The main players are more likely to be higher owned as is and won't produce every match day. And player pool only decreases as rounds advance. Here is where true scouting - the foundation of this site - can pay off. I know the questions over rules and scoring leave something to be desired, but I have heard the old timers talk about an FPL game where punts and non templates ruled....isn't this what this offers ?

That's all good and well but it makes for some incredibly tough decisions. If you have 3 good subs to come in, and both your current players have also scored decently. You're left with some really tough decisions which if you get wrong will set you back quite a bit.

Normally you can only transfer players who are eligible to play, which knocked out teams are not. It is assumed that Iran and Algeria will be knocked out, hence this is your only opportunity to buy them.

I'd have thought that the wildcard would be open at the end of GW3's first deadline, so that you'd have from then until the team got knocked out/groups decided to put them in your squad if you didn't have them already.

Great stuff there, brilliant points all. Your allocation of 1m subs will largely determine your formation. If, unexpectedly, you decide on 5 at the back it's best not to have 3x 1m defeender subs. Zero flexibility there.

4 subs in total doesn'y give too much scope for me though.

          I'd be tempted to do:
          1. Pjanic > Misimovic (pens) - gives you +0.5m
          2. Di Maria > Ozil (pens/set pieces) - Di maria only scored 1 goal in 8 games in 2013-14 and 2 goals in 10 games 2012-13
          3. Neymar > Fred - Fred top scorer in 2013 confer cup. Gives you +1m
          4. Durm > Rojo - Rojo nailed on, wheras Durm likely rotated. Gives you +0.5m (running +1.5m)
          5. Cesar > Cellisen - Cesar not worth paying extra 2m for at this stage. Keeper points are limited. Gives you extra 2m. (running +3.5m)

          Hope that helps

I forgot to say that my current team has £1M free in the bank. Thanks for the advice, one question though...

What do you mean by keeper points being limited? I'd love to free up the cash from Cesar but surely he's a better shout for clean sheets?

I mean keepers get 4 pts for a clean sheet and 1pt for every save/blocked shot.

The keepers who play for the top teams usually have less saves to make, so the potential is limited there.

So you're paying an extra 2m for the 4 pts clean sheet.

In my opinion that 2m is better invested in a striker or midfielder who can score a goal (5 points) or assist (3 pts). The points potential is less restricted.

                  No worries.

Another thing I've been thinking about is whether Messi and the expensive players are really worth it at this stage.

Spain for instance are highly priced and have an abundance of talent which will surely be rotated. It's catch 22 because if you pick those players you can't afford a squad to cover them when they are rotated, which they most likely will be.

Another problem… Imagine Argentina walk their group, there is potential that Messi could then be rested for the 3rd game.

If that happens, what options on the bench do you have?

Also, what if you've picked up injuries/suspensions along the way too?

With that in mind i''ve gone for a larger squad approach which will give me 'more bites of the cherry' so to speak as you can simply sub out the players who don't score many points for the ones yet to play.

Also gives you plenty of cover in the scenario of injuries/suspensions/rotation.

Continuing on the conversation from the other page: French defenders.

Who is the best? The last piece of the jigsaw!

Evra: Ageing, was one of the causes for dissent last world cup, but there seems to be little effective competition for his position?

Varane: Young, Drogba described him as one of the hardest to go up against, but mixed game time both Internationally and domestically.

Sakho: Much better for France then Liverpool, the hero that helped put them through, but is he guaranteed?

Koscielny: By far the most accomplished, solid season with Arsenal, but is that enough?

Debuchy: May be injured, little competetion outside of Sagna, who is older.

Sagna: Little international game time recently, but good for Arsenal.

Only concern is that you seem have no CBs (all seem to be FBs) in Def; as we're not quite sure how the RBs might pan out I'd rather hedge between the two; apart from that looks good

I notice that there has been some dissension about 1M players.

Well, here's a thought. As the rounds go by, we will all need less players. So, therefore, NOW is the time to have a big squad. Come round three, as soon as transfers open, buy two or three 1M fillers. They are always late, it has never failed me in the past.

Also, THEN will be the time to buy your fancy Goalkeeper. 😉

    Anyway, that's my take. 😀
