Karim Benzema bags a brace as France sweep aside Honduras in a bad-tempered affair. Ricardo Rodriguez provides the assists for both Switzerland goals in a win over Ecuador, whilst a Lionel Messi wonder goal proves the difference as Argentina somewhat fortuitously get the better of Bosnia:

Benzema at the Double in French Cruise
Handed the central role in a 4-3-3 formation, the Real Madrid man had a hand in all three goals as France eased to victory over an unimpressive Honduras. Benzema opened the scoring from the spot and, after his shot rebounded off the post and keeper Noel Valladres for the second, fired the final goal in a 3-0 win as Didier Deschamps’ side got their campaign up and running in convincing fashion.

Benzema was shifted to the flank late on as a result of Olivier Giroud’s introduction and if the France manager continues to utilise late subs up front, Mathieu Valbuena’s owners may be a little concerned. The Marseille playmaker – who was handed responsibility for free-kicks and corners and was unlucky not to pick up any points – made way for the Arsenal man, suggesting his game time may be lessened in the latter stages of matches.

Les Blues Defence Impresses Again
Deschamps’ side arrived in impressive form at the back, with a single goal conceded in their previous five matches. It was no surprise, then, to see France deter the lacklustre Hondurans, who managed just four attempts on goal over the entire match – those looking to invest in the French defence ahead of the games against Switzerland and Ecuador may turn to the likes of budget-friendly Rafael Varane, who seems to have established himself ahead of Laurent Koscielny in the centre-half pecking order.

Honduras’ most notable contribution to the proceedings was a non-stop show of ill-discipline that led to the dismissal of Wilson Palacios, though it’s fair to say they were lucky to end with 10 men after a serious of unsightly challenges. On last night’s showing, upcoming opponents Ecuador and Switzerland look good value for points at both ends of the pitch and may well be worth considering.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three of the France back-four produced at least five recovered balls – Mamadou Sakho (seven), Varane (six) and Mathieu Debuchy (five) – and Yohan Cabaye also impressed, with a total of six in the deep-lying central midfield role. Honduras centre-half Maynor Figueroa and central midfielder Luis Garrido were the main men for the losers with five apiece.

Rodriguez Creativity the Key for Swiss
The left-back lived up to our expectations by teeing up both his side’s goals as Ottmar Hitzfeld’s men came from behind to see off Ecuador 2-1. Having produced five goals and nine assists for Wolfsburg last term, Rodriguez was on many a Fantasy managers’ radar, with a very favourable price tag right across the games furthering his appeal. A share of corners helped him set up Switzerland’s opener, whilst the youngster’s raids down the left troubled Ecuador time and again and even produced an assist for a wrongly-disallowed Josip Drmic strike. A midweek match with France is no easy task but Rodriguez’ display will surely persuade his owners to hand him a starting berth for the showdown against Didier Deschamps’ side.

Switzerland Subs Stake a Claim
Hitzfeld has decisions to make for the France game after both his side’s goals were provided by substitutes. Admir Mehmedi replaced Valentin Stocker in the attacking midfield three at the break and needed just three minutes to find the net after nodding home a Rodriguez corner, whilst Haris Seferovic fired home the late winner 15 minutes after replacing Josip Drmic in the lone forward role. Both scorers could well be rewarded with a starting berth for Friday’s match, whilst at the back, a shaky performance from Johan Djourou could enable Fabian Schar the chance to return to the starting XI.

Valencia Maintains Recent Form
Handed the role alongside Felipe Caicedo up front in a 4-4-2, Enner Valencia opened the scoring against the Swiss to continue the impressive run that has now seen him score in five of Ecuador’s last six matches. A favourably-priced option across the Fantasy games, he could appeal to those looking for a punt in Matchday 2 – with a game against Honduras up next, the 25-year-old could well be poised to pick up the points once again.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three players from both sides managed more than five recovered balls. For the Swiss, Rodriguez, Djourou and central midfielder Valon Behrami produced six apiece, whilst for Ecuador, full-backs Juan Carlos Paredes and Walter Ayovi registered seven and six respectively, with Carlos Gruezo also making six in the centre of the park.

Sabella Changes Systems in Narrow Argentina Win
Having utilised a 4-3-3 formation for the qualifiers, Alejandro Sabella moved to a 5-3-2 for last night’s clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Up front, Gonzalo Higuain was sacrificed as the Argentina boss partnered Lionel Messi with Sergio Aguero before a half-time change of heart saw the Napoli forward thrown on as Sabella returned to a three-man frontline. Higuain played a pivotal role for the second goal in a 2-1 win by teeing up Messi to slot home but there’s no question that the South Americans were a little lucky to win – just two shots on target all game, with their first strike an own goal, hardly bodes well for the remaining two matches with Iran and Nigeria. If Sabella rolls out a 4-3-3 from the start next time round, though, Messi will surely be a major armband favourite for Saturday’s showdown with the Iranians after his superb winner.

Bosnians Unlucky in Narrow Loss
Safet Susic also changed his formation. The Bosnia boss mainly utilised a 4-3-1-2 or midfield diamond in qualifying but opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, handing Edin Dzeko the lone forward role and dropping Vedad Ibisevic from the XI, though the latter staked a claim for a starting berth against Nigeria next time round by climbing off the bench to net his side’s only goal. Miralem Pjanic owners will be a little concerned by his role in the double-pivot – the Roma man was expected to line up on the right of the attacking midfield three but may well be moved to a more advanced berth as Susic goes on the offensive for the two remaining matches. Bosnia had more shots (16 to 12) and efforts on target (six to two) than their opponents and will take heart from this display for the clashes with Nigeria and Iran.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, two Argentine defenders made five or more recovered balls – left-back Marcos Rojo (seven) and centre-half Ezequiel Garay (six). For Bosnia, full-backs Sead Kolasinac and Mensur Mujdza produced five apiece, whilst central midfield duo Pjanic and Muhamed Besic both managed six.

Would you shift anyone from this frontline?

    Costa, Fred, Dzeko

It's a private draft league, most players are taken, so I'd have to get creative with replacements, possibly changing formation with more midfielders. It's more Costa and Fred I'm concerned about.

If you didn't know that you should have him with that group and form, blame yourself.

no, I didn't have him either, but that was the biggest issue in my team, one thing I tried to tweak my team for. In the end, I'm not totally unhappy with Neymar, Sanchez and Messi.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Keeping it simple?

Imagine for a moment that the McD game is clear, not confusing and the interface is great.

Ok...so with that in mind what do you think about more complex games such as McD where detailed knowledge and research around stats are key? Do you enjoy playing such games where research is rewarded?

Do you think the McD game goes too far and too many player attributes are rewarded. Does this mean that poor players can perversely score more than better players?

Do you think UFPL offers a happy medium of more detailed points on offer, but not as many as McD?

Or do you prefer the basic simplicity of FPL and Fox where goals, assists and clean sheets are the bread and butter scoring of a side?

Having read a lot of comments about the McD game I'm glad I avoided it, but I also have reservations about games that are that complex. A great Fantasy game I think is one that allows you to enjoy the game, enjoy the actual football, rewards research and rewards the best players on the pitch with points.

I think UFPL offers that happy medium. I'm also really enjoying the Fox game for the World Cup and Obviously FPL in general. The best players get the most points and there is still a level of research reward in knowing for example that Cuadrado is an assist machine and kindly priced.

If the scoring is done well, I think rewarding more attributes could be a great thing - it creates a larger pool of viable players and reduces the risk of templates.

But done badly, it becomes random. It's easier to get a simple game right.

I actually like the fact that different ways of scoring are used. There are some which need tweaking , but overall it makes the game a bit more diverse, and the number of differentials you can use is much bigger.

Also I like the Goalkeeper points, makes them a better choice as in FPL , you can't really get much above a CS and the ocassional saves.

Like awarding points for some skill areas. Think McD got the scale wrong though. Based on their point system for everything else, goals and assists need to be worth more. RVP at 12 points is not enough of a reward for a brilliant game with so many defenders that did NOT have a clean sheet sitting on 7 or more.

Also, the standard for accuracy of shots on goal is too high when 3 accurate shots out if 4 taken is still not good enough

In a WC tournament the FF game should be aimed at a very broad group of players..especially when it is run by FIFA/McD's...This version is confusing for even seasoned FF players so what chance the rest ?

In terms of if the game is a success then it is down to approval ratings by the FF players..both seasoned and casual.I'm going to guess that amongst us on this site only 10% think the game is enjoyable (generous)..so i'll hazard a guess that amongst the wider public it is less than that..

In terms of the simpler, better thought out and more accessible Fox game I haven't seen a single poster amongst us who hasn't thought the game is nything less than enjoyable..So it's a 100% success..and I would imagine the same for the casual.

So yes, The McD's game is totally over engineered....whereas the Fox and FPL games hit the spot just right.Jury is out for UFPL for me because I'd expect a few modifications after the Beta version last year.

I love the McD complexity (and especially substitutions) in principle...

...sadly in practice the scoring is kind of opaque and the interface is terrible. If they had a working interface for formations and subs, proper point breakdowns, and a scoring system that was better balanced and better explained, they'd be on to something.

the scoring system of mcfarce is a joke. a game where defenders and goalkeepers can still score quite high despite getting hammered is just wrong, especially where they may even but outscoring the team who hammered them! they need to tweak RBs to be 1 point for every 3 – 5 and other measures need to be reduced to.

also for me, winning a penalty is far more influential in a game than hitting a few balls in the box or blocking a few shots, yet goes completely unrewarded.

      it’s a supersize McJoke

McD I reckon. It gives you better options for low priced players. Especially defensive midfielders. In my mind they are good players, but they never get rewarded for being necessary players in the game, points wise.

And research actually pays off, as a lot people in my leagues just go for all stars and get lucky if they come off, but saw my team as mediocre. I had more options on the bench and as of now, my defenders average 9 pts and none of them have a clean sheets, but they are good at winning the ball and setting up attacks. All and all very happy with McD, but the interface and rules needs some work in deed.

The interest in Vermaelen from Man United has been known for a while now, but there's a huge difference between a 'deal in principle' and an actual transfer. Any player can sign a deal in principle with another club.

Arsenal haven't agreed to let Vermaelen go and there's still 12 months to run on his contract. I'd also be very surprised if Man United are going to pay him £100,000 per week.

Seems like the defenders are outscoring the midfielders in McD. Swap Di Maria (5 pts) & Valbuena (6 pts) to a defender (either Durm/Montazeri/Mesbah) - formation from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3. Still have 3 midfielders yet to play including KDB.

You can still loose the 11 points if they don't play, KDB was injured recently as well, so I'd always wait for the lineups as any points are dear.

But as a concept its a good idea and seems the way forward.

I was at work so only but it looked like messi has a fairly average game beyond a sensationsl goal yet he still got 3 from balls into the box. So even a bad game he likely to be fairly involved so no goals he will probably score 4/5. Much more upside from there

Hasn't di Maria only got 5 or something?

He's got 4 I think. I'd take him out. I took out Pogba for Bentaleb

Only 4? Even worse. Not even a question of doing it really.

      Worth a risk imo.

Bentaleb should get 3 for playing, 1 for passing %, and then he could get RB's, blocks, crosses, assists, goals etc.

      Low risk for 1 point.

Seems pretty unanimous, 5 points is about as low as it gets. Is Bentaleb nailed on?

How many balls do you think Bentaleb can recover?

I'd say more than Di Maria, as they will be in defense against Belgium.

New coach in Monaco don't think Falcao fits in their style of play so offers himtoChelsea for 60m€ to aford buying D Costa instead..

I think it is enough stating it in first sentence...
I'm loving it, almost best part of a season with all crazy rumours flying around.
Can't get enough of silly season.
