We’ve another four matches to look forward to this evening as the group stages continue to wrap up. England, of course, already know their fate after losing both opening matches, whilst tonight’s opponents Costa Rica are through to the knockouts after serving up back-to-back wins over Uruguay and Italy to stun the football world:

Costa Rica: Navas; Gamboa, Duarte, Gonzalez, Miller, Diaz; Ruiz, Borges, Tejeda, Brenes; Campbell

England: Foster; Jones, Cahill, Smalling, Shaw; Lampard, Wilshere; Milner, Barkley Lallana; Sturridge

The Costa Ricans make two changes from the side that defeated Italy last week. At the back, Jorge Luis Pinto brings in Roy Miller for Michael Umana, whilst further up the pitch, Christian Bolanos drops out for Randall Brenes in what looks a continuation of the 5-4-1 formation which has proven so successful.

As announced yesterday, Roy Hodgson makes nine changes from the team that lost to Uruguay as England attempt to avoid the ignominy of finishing rock-bottom of Group D. Only Daniel Sturridge and Gary Cahill keep their places for the Three Lions as Hodgson hands his squad members the chance to impress.

Uruguay: Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Pereira; Rodriguez, Arevalo Rios, Gonzalez; Lodeiro; Suarez,Cavani,

Italy: Buffon; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; De Sciglio, Pirlo, Verratti, Marchisio, Darmian; Balotelli, Immobile

Uruguay are unchanged from the side that beat England 2-1 last week. Oscar Tabarez’ side will line up in a 4-3-1-2 formation once again, with Nicolas Lodeiro tucked in behind Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, as the latter looks to replicate his match-winning brace against Hodgson’s side and fire his team into the last 16.

Cesare Prandelli’s side need only a draw against the South Americans to secure second spot. The Italians make four changes from their Matchday two loss to Costa Rica and bring in Mattia De Sciglio, Leonardo Bonucci, Marco Verratti and Ciro Immobile in what seems to be a 3-5-2 formation, with the latter partnering Mario Balotelli up top.

In the 9pm matches, Columbia look to finish Group C with a 100% record. The South Americans will be hoping James Rodriguez can maintain the form that has seen him score in each of his first two appearances, while Juan Cuadrado (three assists) and Teofilo Gutierrez (a goal and assist) also carry a major threat against Japan – Fantasy managers will be hoping that reports of rest and rotation turn out to be inaccurate.

The other game in Group C sees Ivory Coast square up to a Greece side that failed to find the net in their opening two matches. While a draw may well be enough for the Africans to progress, Sabri Lamouchi’s men will want to serve up a strong display after narrowly losing to the Colombians in Matchday 2 – Gervinho has notched in both their games so far and is the one guaranteed starter in the front three, though Lamouchi could turn to the experience of Didier Drogba to lead the line this time, having utilised the former Chelsea man as a sub in the first couple of matches.

my tip to you and I is stop betting on this WC... so unpredictable...

I started off well but am down about 400 quid now...

It's eating into my winning funds and I don't like it...

I am considering quiting betting until the PL starts... unlikely but will slow down..

Same here, I won a couple of times at the beginning when all the games were predictable... was $235 up at one point...

Have lost every single bet I've made this week... about $100... and they have been fairly tight doubles... nothing too crazy...

the early games are the worst so far in the world cup. England inept, Uruguay and Italy too busy cheating and winging rather than playing football. Being a Pom I want to congratulate Costa Rica with a net worth a fraction of the other 3 on getting through. Liverpool mus be sick of Suarez's SXXT no matter how good he is. I thought Cheillini was as bad as Suarez, rolling and screaming on the deck in 4 separate incidents. Comments?

It's why I don't like these squad games..either McD's or UFPL...I picked badly and that's it..you're stuffed. But it can happen to any team, injuries, bans, out of favour, illness, poor form...whatever reason there's no way back in. This game is a bit better than UFPL because ay least I get another bite of the cherry for the knock out stages.

When UFPL opened I posted a squad of what was a very tidy looking bunch of picks as it might have been at the start of last seasons Pl season...all of them good picks and all of them appearing in many FPL teams...and all poor picks by the time they launched UFPL...It included the likes of Walcott, Koren, Cabaye etc...All the players had fallen by the wayside for a variety of reasons but could all have easily been picked on one squad...and nothing you could do about it.

In a way yes, but Greece actually seemed the better team for most of the match.

It's sad for Ivory Coast, that such a great generation did not really achieve anything in the end, they may have one last chance the upcoming Afcon.

Probably this is Karma, but I just can't believe what an easy path we have to the SF.

Mexico up first, a good defensive side, but nothing spectacular up front.
Costa Rica/Greece in the next round, two well organised sides with zero experience of knockouts, so should beat them if we are at our best.

Even in the semis, facing Argentina or Belgium is not the most difficult draw, given the other half will have Brazil, Colombia, France and Germany.

    Power to the Oranje. 😉

Evra, almost zero. Digne is almost sure to start.

Rojo, only speculation he will be rested because he has a yellow. Could well not be the case, as Argies don't have another LB, and they need a draw to avoid France in the pre-QF.

Does everyone remember the argument from Bale, that the faster players run the easier it is for them to get hurt, and therefore go down easier.

I'm sorry but it should be like driving a car, sure the car can go at high speeds, but you should only drive at a speed you can control. Similiarly, if you cant dodge tackles at top speed then slow down until you are in control.

Heydari is unlikey to get more than 5 so it would be a good sub, better if you have some other players you could switch for (formation change).

I do have other players I can switch in if I want to remove sanchez, but figure I might as well give heydari a shot as he plays before the other players

I just meant it in the sense, that if you don't have any other players besides Heydari I wouldn't switch as he doesn't really get points (he is a defender listed as an attacker).

If you do have other players playing besides Heydari who are better then why not.

It seems 5 points are not a good result in McD's game so I would definitely twist. There is a big chance that some of your subs will outscore him easily. You should have in mind the possible rotations, too. It makes the decision a little trickier.

    Wenger dismisses Balotelli interest

speaking to beIN Sport last night, the Arsenal manager denied the AC Milan man was on his summer shopping list. Asked by Ruud Gullit if he was a player he was hoping to add to the Arsenal squad, Wenger said, “No. No, that’s pure invention. We cannot believe absolutely everything that is on internet or is in newspapers."

Manchester United defender Alexander Buttner will leave Old Trafford after he agreed to join Dynamo Moscow, saying he wants to “win trophies.”

Dynamo revealed the news on their official website which said Buttner’s contract was “agreed upon” and is waiting on “technical details” to be settled, the statement was accompanied by pictures of the left-back in their training kit.

The Dutchman said according to The Independent: “I want to play in the Champions League, win trophies.

“Dynamo are a very strong team and I am confident that we will fight for first place next season.”

The Russian based club will play in the Europa League this season after finishing fourth in the Russian league last season. While the Red Devils failed to qualify for European football after a poor campaign under David Moyes.
