We reach the end of the group stages of Brazil 2014 this evening as the last 16 match-ups are finalised. Group G gets us up and running at 5pm and with all four of the teams still in with a shout of progressing, Fantasy managers will be hoping there’s less chance of rest and rotation. Germany face up to USA and Portugal square up to a Ghana side devoid of Kevin Prince-Boateng and Sulley Muntari after both players were sent home for disciplinary reasons earlier today:

Germany: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Mertesacker, Howedes; Lahm, Kroos, Schweinsteiger; Ozil, Muller, Podolski

USA: Howard; Johnson, Gonzalez, Besler, Beasley; Jones, Beckerman; Davis, Bradley, Zusi; Dempsey

Joachim Low makes a couple of changes from the side that drew with Ghana. The Germany manager brings in Bastian Schweinsteiger for Sami Khedira in the centre of the park, while Lukas Podolski comes in for Mario Gotze in the front three. Thomas Muller owners will be looking for more of the same, after the Bayern man notched three goals and an assist in the opening couple of matches, whilst those holding Mesut Ozil will be desperate for an improvement after a couple of patchy displays so far.

Jurgen Klinsmann also makes two alterations as he attempts to get the better of his native country. Omar Gonzalez replaces Geoff Cameron in central defence, whilst Brad Davis gets the nod ahead of Alejandro Bedoya on the right flank – Clint Dempsey is looking to score for the third successive match, though the likes of Michael Bradley and Graham Zusi also offer a threat from the attacking midfield positions.

Portugal: Beto; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Veloso; W Carvalho, Moutinho, Amorim; Nani, Eder, Ronaldo

Ghana: Dauda; Afful, Boye, Mensah, Asamoah; Rabiu, Agyemang-Badu; Atsu, Waris, A Ayew; Gyan

Paulo Bento welcomes Pepe back from suspension for the vital game with Ghana, as Ricardo Costa drops out to accommodate the Real Madrid man at centre-half. The Portugal boss makes three further changes, drafting in William Carvalho, Ruben Amorim and Eder for Andre Almeida, Raul Meireles and Helder Postiga – the former two look set to be installed in the middle, with Miguel Veloso shifting to left-back. All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo, though, as he looks to get his goal account finally up and running and fire his side into the last 16.

Prince-Boateng and Muntari’s omissions are the only two changes from Kwesi Appiah after a very encouraging draw with Germany. Udinese player Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu comes into the double-pivot to replace Muntari, whilst the highly-rated Abdul Majeed Waris is tucked in behind Asaomoah Gyan up top. Andrew Ayew, with a goal in both group games so far, looks the major threat for the Africans once again.

Later on, Belgium go head-to-head with South Korea as Marc Wilmots’ side look to end the group stages with a 100% record. Bearing in mind they’re already through, though, there’s a fear that we could see a number of changes from the Europeans in this one, with Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne owners hoping they’ll keep their places in the starting XI. Up top, Wilmots may well omit Romelu Lukaku from his line-up after subbing off the Chelsea man in each of the first two games, whilst at the back, Belgium are set to be without both Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen through injury.

Those defensive concerns will afford the Koreans optimism and with three goals in their first two matches, they present a definite threat to Thibaut Courtois’ clean sheet prospects. The highly-rated Son Heung-min grabbed his first of the tournament in Matchday 2 and, having netted 10 times for Leverkusen in the previous Bundesliga campaign, carries the main threat for Hon Myung-bo’s side.

Despite scoring once and picking up a single point in their opening two matches, Russia are still in with a shout of making the last 16. A win against Algeria, coupled with a Belgian triumph over South Korean, will take Fabio Capello’s side through – Alexander Kokorin looks their best chance of netting, though Alexander Kerzhakov will be hoping for his first start after climbing off the bench in the first pair of fixtures.

After an emphatic 4-2 win over South Korea, Vahid Halilhodzic’s side will approach this one with little fear. Islam Slimani, Abdelmoumene Djabou and Sofiane Feghouli have all served up a goal and assist in the first two fixtures and will fancy their chances of picking up further returns against an unconvincing backline that has been breached in both their opening matches.

    Hello my football brethren.

Fuzzy just wanted to share his state of euphoria as his United States advance from a group containing two of the top four ranked countries in the world.

It has been a magical year for ol' Fuzz. While I have admittedly been a stranger here for a while, it is due to the fact that I landed a job writing about the Premier League here in the States and it has thankfully kept me very busy as I have dedicated my life to exposing my fellow Americans to the best world football has to offer. I cannot convince the masses here to call it football, the word "soccer" has a firm grasp in our terminology. But otherwise, I must tell you that the passion for the sport has grown by leaps and bounds since I began working and to feel like I have played a small part in making it possible makes everything all the more sweet.

We don't have any world class players who display unbelievable tekkers you could spend hours watching video of on Youtube. What we do have though, is a working-class, blue-collar side without any prima donna players. They play with a chip on their shoulder because they know the long standing view of the US team is that they are perpetual underdogs who cannot keep pace with the big boys. Hate on them all you want, maybe Belgium rip them a new one, but I couldn't be prouder regardless.

We continue to grow, MLS continues to grow...it is pretty much a benchmark moment in my life.

Anyway thanks for letting me pontificate for a moment. I love this game and I love you lot. Looking forward to a new PL season. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to write to Daniel Levy and urge him to pluck Shaqiri away from Bayern.

    Unconditional love,

    Fuzzy

well, the knock on us has always been early mistakes but seeing how Belgium have done, I'd say we need to be careful late on. 🙂

I expect Belgium to create plenty of chances but their defense is not formidable. Im afraid of our chances if we go into extra time, but I still think we have a decent shot at this.

Koscielny is just a better defender than Sakho imo, Sakho is massively overrated.

The Iranian Fantasy Footballl team shall be holding a victory part in our Persian tent tonight to celebrate our passage through to the next round of the FFWC competition.

We shall be serving copious amounts of our traditional Shiraz wine and dining on fine Persian cuisine
Including a main course of fish soup or Jujeh kabab for those of a more refined taste

For the English FF team we have provided an alternative and more suitable menu of some Tizer and a packet of Monster munch crisps each

May I take this opportunity to extend a hearty welcome to all apart from the USA FF team.

ENR ruled that Irish Madridista would join Ghana starting week three and Portugal would get a replacement for Pug's Life if they made it to the round of 16. Someone apparently doesn't like the ruling and is trying to change it so Portugal go through.

Shadow, as the host, it is my responsibility to act in the interest of all, and I am trying to make the best and fairest decision on how to proceed...

Like I stated previously, I do not remember making any final decisions on the recruitment of IM, and as the host I'd expect to be a part of that final decision...

It is less than ideal for this uncertainty to be occurring after the deadline and to be making these decisions subsequently is the regrettable result of that, as we risk opening it to the perception that bias might be part of the decision process...

I assure you, I only wish to make a decision that is fair on everyone...

You do realize part of this is an act right, i.e. the bribery, collusion, etc. I was brought into these competitions to add some flair and drama. I'm doing my job.

The serious though is you have the paper trail that shows the ruling that was made BEFORE the start of the round. At the 11th hour you're opening up the possibility of changing the ruling. That's what's thrown the uncertainiy into it - you. Stick to what was ruled before the round started and there is no uncertainty. Change the rules mid stream because you don't remember being consulted despite the visual evidence and you create a mess.

I don't see what being a host has to do with it. Rules should be the same across the board, not vary by what each host wants for his group.

ENR made a ruling - abide by it. Simple.

Did he not say already that he'd struggle to return to the UK insinuating that it was UK media that caused it? May be wrong there.

I hope so though, I hate talent being thrown away. Someone like Barton is no real loss but Suarez has talent, would hate to see it wasted.

It is really close so the knockout stages are packed with possibilities. The spreadsheet shows the big deviations, but in a nutshell:
        Chile (8)
        Greece (9)
        USA (6)
are the countries with the most total highs and lows as far as deviations from our rankings are concerned.

        Remember, scoring is
        Rd16 2x
        QF 4x
        SF 6x

I maaaay have looked at your post above for some inspiration... 😉

I expect Holland to have more trouble this round than France though so for the defensive guys like DeJong / Matuidi I'd prefer a close end to end match with loads of changes in possession..

Wish I could afford Lahm for 0.5 extra and I hate not owning Robben / RVP

haha Knew it was a bad idea to post it 😉

See above for thoughts on De Jong vs Herrera, but yeah fair point. Looks a decent option.

I don't have either as well. But think of it this way, Netherlands are playing Mexico, definitely not an easy game, or one where they're going to have an easy time scoring loads.

Instead, you have Benzema vs Nigeria ( Highest scoring game this round IMO ), Messi vs Switzerland(who have conceded 6 goals so far, 5 to one team) , Neymar vs Chille ( bound to get a goal or two. Neymar in Brazil 😀 ), and Muller vs Algeria.

Simple decision for me. Especially since you get a wild card every round, so they're straight back in next round, provided that they get through of course.

Yup you've convinced me about Herrera, didn't realise he was a whole 1.0 cheaper too so I can upgrade Mesbah to another Costa Rican 🙂

True, but I still expect Holland to go through and even though Mexico are no pushovers, I'd still fancy a goal or two from Holland.. Its just that the other 4 options we have are so good that there's no looking past them!

Cheers for all the help mate 🙂

sadly that went out in the 90's, also I think it will end up being only 2months or no ban from pool games. Fifa just need to look like they're doing there job because the lawyers will easily find holes in their defence

I'm being fair here, not even using the younger guys like some would but established greats!

Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, Aguero (yes, I'd have him first, only thing against him is his injury issues) then obviously mids like Iniesta, Xavi, YYT, Robben etc.

He's a great player, not top 5 in my opinion, not yet. Think I'm being pretty fair, not even including younger guys like Rodriguez, Neymar, Bale, Pogba as they've not had the time to prove themselves yet.

The question was about strikers. Based on ability only if you could buy four he wouldn't be one?

I was basing it on overall best in the world but okay let me think.

                        Messi
                        Aguero
RVP arguably but I'd concede that can be personal preference.
                        Absolutely Falcao
                        Zlatan
Probably tied with Lewandowski for me.

So I'd say Messi, Aguero, Falcao and Zlat before him.

At the moment you only need to be fit to be better than Aguero 🙂

See I absolutely disagree on a technical level. On a fitness level I'll easily accept Aguero needs a lot of work.

tough end to the tournament for the aussies, we ran out of steam and couldn't keep pace with our more fancied opponents 🙁

however, the tournament was very enjoyable....our nail-biting win over chile being the highlight, and that cr7 assist will be imbedded in my mind for eternity 😀

cheers to innsie and saniul + you guys team members for the banter and close contests 🙂

and finally well done NTFM, theBoose13, Koflok and cylus11! you guys gave it your all and unfortunately we just couldn't get it over the line...cheers for your efforts!

Good luck to Chile and Netherlands, hope you guys win it 🙂

Oh come on, you guys did pretty well.
It was just a Ron assist between you and me, that close. And think you would have qualified with that.

Stay for the banter, anyway. 😉
