We reach the end of the group stages of Brazil 2014 this evening as the last 16 match-ups are finalised. Group G gets us up and running at 5pm and with all four of the teams still in with a shout of progressing, Fantasy managers will be hoping there’s less chance of rest and rotation. Germany face up to USA and Portugal square up to a Ghana side devoid of Kevin Prince-Boateng and Sulley Muntari after both players were sent home for disciplinary reasons earlier today:

Germany: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Mertesacker, Howedes; Lahm, Kroos, Schweinsteiger; Ozil, Muller, Podolski

USA: Howard; Johnson, Gonzalez, Besler, Beasley; Jones, Beckerman; Davis, Bradley, Zusi; Dempsey

Joachim Low makes a couple of changes from the side that drew with Ghana. The Germany manager brings in Bastian Schweinsteiger for Sami Khedira in the centre of the park, while Lukas Podolski comes in for Mario Gotze in the front three. Thomas Muller owners will be looking for more of the same, after the Bayern man notched three goals and an assist in the opening couple of matches, whilst those holding Mesut Ozil will be desperate for an improvement after a couple of patchy displays so far.

Jurgen Klinsmann also makes two alterations as he attempts to get the better of his native country. Omar Gonzalez replaces Geoff Cameron in central defence, whilst Brad Davis gets the nod ahead of Alejandro Bedoya on the right flank – Clint Dempsey is looking to score for the third successive match, though the likes of Michael Bradley and Graham Zusi also offer a threat from the attacking midfield positions.

Portugal: Beto; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Veloso; W Carvalho, Moutinho, Amorim; Nani, Eder, Ronaldo

Ghana: Dauda; Afful, Boye, Mensah, Asamoah; Rabiu, Agyemang-Badu; Atsu, Waris, A Ayew; Gyan

Paulo Bento welcomes Pepe back from suspension for the vital game with Ghana, as Ricardo Costa drops out to accommodate the Real Madrid man at centre-half. The Portugal boss makes three further changes, drafting in William Carvalho, Ruben Amorim and Eder for Andre Almeida, Raul Meireles and Helder Postiga – the former two look set to be installed in the middle, with Miguel Veloso shifting to left-back. All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo, though, as he looks to get his goal account finally up and running and fire his side into the last 16.

Prince-Boateng and Muntari’s omissions are the only two changes from Kwesi Appiah after a very encouraging draw with Germany. Udinese player Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu comes into the double-pivot to replace Muntari, whilst the highly-rated Abdul Majeed Waris is tucked in behind Asaomoah Gyan up top. Andrew Ayew, with a goal in both group games so far, looks the major threat for the Africans once again.

Later on, Belgium go head-to-head with South Korea as Marc Wilmots’ side look to end the group stages with a 100% record. Bearing in mind they’re already through, though, there’s a fear that we could see a number of changes from the Europeans in this one, with Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne owners hoping they’ll keep their places in the starting XI. Up top, Wilmots may well omit Romelu Lukaku from his line-up after subbing off the Chelsea man in each of the first two games, whilst at the back, Belgium are set to be without both Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen through injury.

Those defensive concerns will afford the Koreans optimism and with three goals in their first two matches, they present a definite threat to Thibaut Courtois’ clean sheet prospects. The highly-rated Son Heung-min grabbed his first of the tournament in Matchday 2 and, having netted 10 times for Leverkusen in the previous Bundesliga campaign, carries the main threat for Hon Myung-bo’s side.

Despite scoring once and picking up a single point in their opening two matches, Russia are still in with a shout of making the last 16. A win against Algeria, coupled with a Belgian triumph over South Korean, will take Fabio Capello’s side through – Alexander Kokorin looks their best chance of netting, though Alexander Kerzhakov will be hoping for his first start after climbing off the bench in the first pair of fixtures.

After an emphatic 4-2 win over South Korea, Vahid Halilhodzic’s side will approach this one with little fear. Islam Slimani, Abdelmoumene Djabou and Sofiane Feghouli have all served up a goal and assist in the first two fixtures and will fancy their chances of picking up further returns against an unconvincing backline that has been breached in both their opening matches.

Maybe not all Liverpool fans are as bias in regard to Bite Gate as we think:

'I can't believe that people feel he's hard done by. If I bit 3 different blokes on the street on 3 different occasions and it was caught on CCTV, i'd go to jail.

THE FACT IS, SUAREZ SHOULD BE LOCKED UP. IN A STRAIGHT JACKET OR IN A PRISON FOR A FEW MONTHS. The fact he hasn't means he's got off lightly. You can't argue with that, otherwise you're saying it's one rule for everyone else and one rule for footballers. And no, no other high profile footballer has bitten 3 players and called a black player a 'negredo'.

Would my workplace complain if I couldn't work for 4 months due to that? No way. They'd probably fire me for bringing the institution into disrepute. The fact is, if we are so bothered by Suarez's behaviour and that he can't play for us, WE take him to court and sue HIM. We won't because he's too valuable an asset. Think about it: we released Intadje shortly after he was caught smiling during a Hilsborough memorial. If Suarez did that, would we release him? No way! If youth player Jordan Rossiter did what Suarez has done, would we keep him? No way! We'd release him.

So all this conspiracy theory, xenophobic garbage just makes people look like myopic monkeys. If this was a United player, you'd be demanding a harsher punishment.'

      Still rubbish.

Lack of transfers means that you can't right your wrongs whereas now they've gone to the other extreme of giving you unlimited transfers every single round.
Fact that you can't see opponents' teams is also rubbish as it doesn't allow for any rivalry to really occur and if it wasn't for the FFS WC game I would have lost interest from the off.

Good. Needs transfers though. I don't know why FF "squad" games feel the need to do away with transfers. I made some bad choices and have been stuck with them but at least in a short tournament I get another bite of the cherry...Unlike UFPL where I'd just have to give up...

The scoring is a bit odd, defenders get a lot of points etc. But the underlying structure I do really enjoy. Will definitely give UFPL a good go next season.

I hope they make changes to that because you really can become stuck through no fault of your own...Walcott, Koren, Cabaye and on and on and on.. all made a really good team in GW1 last season and most would have picked a lot of "dead" players by the time the New Year came along...and nothing you could do about it. I posted a full squad of really good picks that fell by the wayside for prolonged periods through injuries, transfers etc..

You can still make loans in UFPL though and I think they'll introduce a Jan WC period as well. I guess also that's part of the skill, picking a squad that can sustain a couple of injuries. It's always possible to get really unlucky with injuries in any game though.

Yeah very easy.and if that's the case should you have no way back in to the game ?..because after all is said and done it is a game and they need to keep players engaged "in the game"...Maybe the solution is what I posted below.. vvv

I can understand that but that is part of the challenge. There are transfer windows and the loan system but it's about how you use your squad.
There's also the simple fact that so many players follow the points and last season in particular that worked out for them.

For sure it is..and I did ok in the Beta but I could see the flaws to a squad that is unchanged for a long period of time if things went badly. As a game developer the last thing you want is for players to switch off because they have hit a bit of a wall..

So one of our team members forgot to put Dzeko (8 pts) in because he was busy, he ended up with 10 players and lost the tie 116-122 to Inssie. And with a 2-3 loss, we are out of the FFS WC.

It was an amazing experience, but it is sad to get knocked out just because of a small display of unprofessionalism.

Fair play to all , and iCon especially, for winning ALL his ties.

All the best to Australia and Chile. Let one of Group B win the thing. 😉

3-2 for Australia. Thomass subbed out 8- and 9- pointers for Alderweireld and de Bruyne, and the Ozzies won 4-1.

3-2 would take it to a 3 way tie (assuming this was decided on total points scored) I recon we'd be higher than the Aussies. As I'm on my phone I've no way of checking any of this 🙁

Better than a team with none 😛

They have the strikers, they have enough in defence to be competent too, they need a heart in midfield though.

Vidal, Herrera and Mata would be a fantastic threesome 😛

If they're really set to offer him 250k a week, I'd imagine so. Good as he is I don't think he'll get that anywhere else. Depends what's important to him really. Champion's League or money.

Exactly! I think he's a great buy for Arsenal and if they snap up Aurier he'll provide a lot of crosses too. Remy could break 20 PL goals easily with Arsenal.

Remy is much faster and probably a better finisher but Giroud's link up play and aerial threat tilt it, slightly. He's also incredible for France recently. 😯

I'm pretty bored so I'm gonna do a statistical approach to our defensive dilemma.
Basically it's comparing the defensive performance vs attacking threat of each team to see which matchup have the most chance of a CS.

Brazil (2 GC) vs Chile (5 GS)
Colombia (2 GC) vs Uruguay (4 GS)
Netherland (3 GC) vs Mexico (4 GS)
Costa Rica (1 GC) vs Greece (2 GS)
France (2 GC) vs Nigeria (3 GS)
Germany (2 GC) vs Algeria (5 GS)
Argentina (3 GC) vs Switzerland (7 GS)
Belgium (1 GC) vs USA (4 GS)

From that alone, Costa Rica have the highest possibility of CS.
1 Goal Conceeded vs 2 Goals scored by Greece. Good defense vs weak offense.
You can work out the rest; Belgium, France, Colombia got a good chance as well.

Furthermore, we can take a look at the top 7 stats of Shots Conceded and Shots per Game

    Shots Conceeded
    3. Costa Rica 9.3
    3. Netherland 9.3
    7. Belgium 10.3
    8. France 11
    9. Algeria 11.3
    12. Germany 11.7
    13. Argentina 12

    Shots
    2. Chile 8.7
    2. Algeria 8.7
    5. USA 9
    6. Costa Rica 9.3
    7. Uruguay 10.3
    10. Greece 11
    10. Mexico 11

Again, Costa Rica impresses with conceeding the top joint less shots conceeded and with Greece having one of the lowest shots per game.
Other standout performer includes Netherland vs Mexico, Belgium vs USA.

The thing is though this is all just number.
With this we completely ignores the likes of Germany vs Algeria which on paper should be an easy win for Germany.
Germany got a good defense (2 GC), but Algeria scores 5 goals - interestingly though it come from one of the fewest shots per game in the tournament. Will they keep up this efficiency?

    In conclusion, I like potatoes.
And Costa Rica definitely provide an intriguing matchup, especially for those whose chasing (like me), might want to go triple CR defense ala all in / risk everything.

Oh yeah I forgot to write this.

I didn't do the remainder 8 teams because it's pretty obvious we won't go with them, statistically speaking. All they're up against are the top teams who shots a lot and score goals.

Even Mexico, who got the best defense in the tournament (1 goals conceeded), is up against Netherland who is the highest scorer in the tournament.

I got it. But because CS is only 1 factor when we are analysing defenders. Can you do something similar about Recovered balls and Block shots? It may be the case when a team like Argentina who shoots a lot but is not actually effective.

P.S: Your job is great. Thanks a lot.
