We reach the end of the group stages of Brazil 2014 this evening as the last 16 match-ups are finalised. Group G gets us up and running at 5pm and with all four of the teams still in with a shout of progressing, Fantasy managers will be hoping there’s less chance of rest and rotation. Germany face up to USA and Portugal square up to a Ghana side devoid of Kevin Prince-Boateng and Sulley Muntari after both players were sent home for disciplinary reasons earlier today:

Germany: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Mertesacker, Howedes; Lahm, Kroos, Schweinsteiger; Ozil, Muller, Podolski

USA: Howard; Johnson, Gonzalez, Besler, Beasley; Jones, Beckerman; Davis, Bradley, Zusi; Dempsey

Joachim Low makes a couple of changes from the side that drew with Ghana. The Germany manager brings in Bastian Schweinsteiger for Sami Khedira in the centre of the park, while Lukas Podolski comes in for Mario Gotze in the front three. Thomas Muller owners will be looking for more of the same, after the Bayern man notched three goals and an assist in the opening couple of matches, whilst those holding Mesut Ozil will be desperate for an improvement after a couple of patchy displays so far.

Jurgen Klinsmann also makes two alterations as he attempts to get the better of his native country. Omar Gonzalez replaces Geoff Cameron in central defence, whilst Brad Davis gets the nod ahead of Alejandro Bedoya on the right flank – Clint Dempsey is looking to score for the third successive match, though the likes of Michael Bradley and Graham Zusi also offer a threat from the attacking midfield positions.

Portugal: Beto; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Veloso; W Carvalho, Moutinho, Amorim; Nani, Eder, Ronaldo

Ghana: Dauda; Afful, Boye, Mensah, Asamoah; Rabiu, Agyemang-Badu; Atsu, Waris, A Ayew; Gyan

Paulo Bento welcomes Pepe back from suspension for the vital game with Ghana, as Ricardo Costa drops out to accommodate the Real Madrid man at centre-half. The Portugal boss makes three further changes, drafting in William Carvalho, Ruben Amorim and Eder for Andre Almeida, Raul Meireles and Helder Postiga – the former two look set to be installed in the middle, with Miguel Veloso shifting to left-back. All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo, though, as he looks to get his goal account finally up and running and fire his side into the last 16.

Prince-Boateng and Muntari’s omissions are the only two changes from Kwesi Appiah after a very encouraging draw with Germany. Udinese player Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu comes into the double-pivot to replace Muntari, whilst the highly-rated Abdul Majeed Waris is tucked in behind Asaomoah Gyan up top. Andrew Ayew, with a goal in both group games so far, looks the major threat for the Africans once again.

Later on, Belgium go head-to-head with South Korea as Marc Wilmots’ side look to end the group stages with a 100% record. Bearing in mind they’re already through, though, there’s a fear that we could see a number of changes from the Europeans in this one, with Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne owners hoping they’ll keep their places in the starting XI. Up top, Wilmots may well omit Romelu Lukaku from his line-up after subbing off the Chelsea man in each of the first two games, whilst at the back, Belgium are set to be without both Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen through injury.

Those defensive concerns will afford the Koreans optimism and with three goals in their first two matches, they present a definite threat to Thibaut Courtois’ clean sheet prospects. The highly-rated Son Heung-min grabbed his first of the tournament in Matchday 2 and, having netted 10 times for Leverkusen in the previous Bundesliga campaign, carries the main threat for Hon Myung-bo’s side.

Despite scoring once and picking up a single point in their opening two matches, Russia are still in with a shout of making the last 16. A win against Algeria, coupled with a Belgian triumph over South Korean, will take Fabio Capello’s side through – Alexander Kokorin looks their best chance of netting, though Alexander Kerzhakov will be hoping for his first start after climbing off the bench in the first pair of fixtures.

After an emphatic 4-2 win over South Korea, Vahid Halilhodzic’s side will approach this one with little fear. Islam Slimani, Abdelmoumene Djabou and Sofiane Feghouli have all served up a goal and assist in the first two fixtures and will fancy their chances of picking up further returns against an unconvincing backline that has been breached in both their opening matches.

Overtaken you Innsie in the Fox game...! Not the best round 3 for you. Suarez and Kompany transfers didn't help.

Any advice you'd like for the next round..? 😉

Yep a week from hell for me... Fallen from 8th to 107th 😯

I'm gonna do something drastic like triple German defence... It could pay off handsomely 🙂 what's your plan team-wise for the next round(s)?

As discussed here, gonna be cheap defence with maybe one German premium.

Deciding between Benzema or RVP to partner Messi/Neymar. Think as I have Robben it has to be Benzema though.

Ugh I can't find more than 3 midfielders that I actually want...

Everyone will have JRod, Cuadrado & Valbuena...

Then you have Oscar, Di Maria, Shaqiri, KDB, etc... but I'm not all that convinced by any of them...

Out of those am not convinced by KDB. He created more chances in first game, but didn't have a single shot in the second game. Lack of chances created or shots maybe due to the fact that he is more or less playing in the central midfield.

Di maria was unlucky in the last game, but he had several long distance shots on target and he was like the Di Maria of RM {i believe he is getting there}. Shaqiri I believe can be a good shout too against the leaky Argentine defence.

Oscar out of all has the tough fixtures, so if you have Neymar, I would leave him out for this round.

Hoping for words of wisdom from the football fantasy gurus.
New at this, so pleased with my McD 295 points, but time to get serious.

My thinking after looking at the stats is that defenders and attackers offer a better point return for points spent. Mids seem overpriced relative to their points potential (JRod and Cuadrado excepted).
    So I'm going either 5/3/2 or 4/3/3

    My starting lineup is:
    Cillessen
    Blind/Duarte/Omeru/Hummels
    L.Gustavo/JRod/Cuadrado/DeJong
    Neymar/Benzema

Subs: Enyeama, Mbohli, Rojo, Djouru, Tejeda, Maniatis, Bentelab, Mueller, Djabou
    And a few Iranian fillers

Does this make sense? Is 2 Nigerians two too many?

    Advice very welcome

Doubling up on Netherlands Defense doesn't seem right..Mexico will score..Hummels is an expensive pick...De Jong can be sent off any time...Doubling up Colombian Mid also doesn't seem right..KO stages are all about attacking..3 forwards should be the way to go...

Sorry... Meant to put Benzema, Mueller and Neymar up front
I figure I'll sub off one or both of my Colombians if their game doesn't go well
For DeJong, Tejeda, Maniatis or Bentelab as needed
Hard to find good value subs playing in later games...expensive teams offering poor points value other than Algeria.

I'm torn between picking defenders on strong teams that won't have too much to do at the back (and chance of a CS) versus strong defenders on not so good teams that will have lots of defending to do (in front of a strong keeper).
        So complicated!

McD's Rank can be very fluctuating. Especially in this Knockout Stage where Unlimited Transfers are available in each round. Unlike in FPL here leaders won't have "team value" or "settled team" advantage. This game is very dynamic & gives opportunities to get succeeded in lot of ways. In these last 4 Rounds everytime you can start with fresh team so it's very much open contest & doesn't restrict title race to only Top Ranked players at the moment.

He scored 28. As comparison, Cuadrado got 30.

Since I'm pretty much out of the tournament, I'll take a different approach on the game.
Will try to find defensive players whose up against shot-free sides.
        Mascherano is a perfect example.

        1. He plays solo DM so he'll get a lot of the dirty work (recovered balls, block shots)
        2. Argentina is 'decent' defensively
        3. Up against Switz who likes to shoot, 3rd highest in the remaining teams.

    McD's...

I feel our success will rely heavily upon each of our approaches to how we feel the 'goal scoring/general lack of CS' dynamic will continue...

I'm planning to spend the majority of my money in MID & ATT in the 2nd Round... and picking cheap good value defenders/GKs...

If I'm wrong and teams tighten up massively, then the big expensive defenders are bound to score more heavily... and the bulk of my money will be misplaced...

    What is the consensus?

You could argue that the cheap defenders will be overworked and as a result will make up for it...

And anyway, at least we have another WC to fix our mistakes if it all goes wrong...

Teams will tighten up generally in the knockout rounds.

The group stage so far has been outlier (we did say that about Yaya last season though),

It's hard to find good midfielder in McFantasy. Will load up strikers and plenty of defenders (Hummels, etc).
Look for team who's good defensively and up against shot-free side.

I will be getting Mascherano. 😉

With both Germans classed as MF'ers in Fox against Algeria, it just seems too good to pass up.

    Random observations..

Mexico are the only undefeated team not to win their group...

Russia are the only team to have drawn 2 games...

Group B was the only group without a draw...

I have way too much time on my hands...

Honestly, I don't think France are going to keep Nigeria out, I reckon they'll put one or 2 past Lloris. High scoring game methinks

Going with that Front line, but in my MF i'm going with Muller,Robben, GOTZE and Cuadrado
I think Cuadrado over J-Rod wouldbe more beneficial since it would allow me to get 2 German defenders

Remind me...in McD can we sub players in and out until the transfer market closes? Or does this all have to be worked out on paper until we know what our "final" team will be?

Then I'd leave Benzema out. I'd be worried without Robben/RVP. Especially since you already have Valbuena.
Problem is I reckon France/Nigeria is going to be one of the highest scoring games of the round 😆

Not helping am I......Give Sneidjer any thought?

          Stick with Benz for now
