Our attentions return to the World Cup once again as the knockout stages prepare to get underway. We roll out our fourth player picks article for PlayON’s World Cup Game this afternoon and, as always, assess the PlayON Player Price List for potential budget bargains:

PlayON is running a FREE ENTRY, £500 GUARANTEED POT game for the Round of 16 Gameweek. You can enter up to 3 different teams into each game now at PlayON so your chances of success have never been better. The team picking and game entry deadline is 15.00 today so pick up to 3 teams and enter the £500 GUARANTEED game now at www.playon.co

Goalkeeper – Thibaut Courtois
Beaten only once during the group stages by a penalty from Algeria, the Belgium defence has been a reliable source of Fantasy returns so far. Courtois and co now go head-to-head with a USA side that failed to register a single attempt on target during Thursday’s loss to Germany and, priced at £8.6m, looks a reliable option between the posts. Costa Rica’s Keyler Navas also conceded just a single goal over his opening three fixtures, with clean sheets accrued against Italy and England – available for £8.3m, he’ll be confident of another shut-out, bearing in mind that upcoming opponents Greece netted just twice in their first three games. France’s Hugo Lloris comes in at £8.6m for a clash with Nigeria and will be looking for his third clean sheet in four appearances for Didier Deschamps’ side, after keeping out his opponents in two of the three group games.

Defender – Benedikt Howedes
Priced at just £8.8m for an upcoming clash against Algeria, the left-back offers Fantasy managers the cheapest route into Germany’s back-four. Joachim Low’s side have already picked up clean sheets against Portugal and USA over the group stages and will be heavily-backed to produce the defensive returns once again. Rested for France’s final Group E encounter with Ecuador, Rafael Varane comes in at £8.7m in the PlayON Player Price List. The Real Madrid man should be reinstalled to the starting XI for a game against a Nigeria side with a mere three goals to their name over the group stages. If you fancy doubling up on the Belgians and already have Courtois in goal, Vincent Kompany looks set to recovery from a minor injury in time for the clash against USA – he sets you back only £8.3m.

Midfielder – James Rodriguez
The form midfielder of the tournament so far, the Colombia playmakers is available for £8.8m ahead of a testing game against Uruguay. Rodriguez has notched in all three of his appearances so far and with a couple of assists also accrued, looks difficult to ignore against a side still reeling from the suspension of Luis Suarez. Having served up a goal and assist in the 5-2 win over Switzerland, Mathieu Valbuena was afforded the night off against Ecuador, with his side already through. Coming in at £8.6m, Valbuena is a budget-friendly option ahead of the showdown against Nigeria – first in line for set-pieces and corners for Les Bleus, he could be back amongst the points once again. Eden Hazard picked up a couple of assists in his first two appearances before being handed a brief sub appearance against South Korea on Thursday evening. The Belgium wide man is available for £8.8m as Marc Wilmots’ side look for a fourth consecutive win against the USA and looks vital to his side’s chances of progressing.

Forward – Robin Van Persie
Suspended for the final group game against Chile, the Dutch skipper is priced at a budget-friendly £10.8m for an upcoming clash with Mexico. Van Persie has found the net in both of his appearances so far and with spot-kicks also boosting his appeal, offers a route into the tournament’s highest scoring side over the first three rounds of matches. Further down the price bracket, Costa Rica’s Joel Campbell at £10.0m is nailed-on as the lone striker in a 5-4-1 and, with a goal and assist so far, looks the man most likely to deliver against Greece. Ezequiel Lavezzi could be set to benefit from Sergio Aguero’s ongoing injury problems. Priced at just £9.7m, the PSG man replaced Aguero in the first-half of the midweek win over Nigeria and could well be set to keep his place in the starting XI against Switzerland.

The Round of 16 Gameweek closes at 15.00 today so get picking at www.playon.co

    For Fox game

    Neuer (navas)
Hummels - de vrij - debuchy ( duarte, Johnson)
    Valbuena - Muller - JAMES - Sneijder ( cuadrado)
    Messi - Neymar - Benzema

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

I am not sure whether I have choosen the right in the defense?
And I can't make up my mind about RVP, do you think I should squeeze him in for Neymar? I am not sure Neymar will have a good game against Chile

Need a cheap (3.0 and under) mid for The Sun game.. No assists so points mostly from goals and clean sheet.. Can change again before the next round.. So far I've narrowed it down to..

    Dempsey, Cuadardo, Shaqiri, Mertens

Which one of these would you go for? Or any others Ive missed?

Are Everton & Spurs players less appealing this season, due to their involvement in the Europa League?

The Europa League is a bit of a joke now, nobody really wants to play in it as the Thursday night kick offs are just plain stupid.

Why dont they change their match days to Tuesdays & Wednesdays when there are no Champions League games?

So there's 12 weeks of CL games, 14 weeks of Europa League games between mid-september and mid-may. Add in domestic cups and any subsequent rearrangements as well as midweek domestic games and it becomes impossible.

The domestic cup games dont really start until January, maybe February, as first team players arent used until then.

There is also that 2 month CL break, a chance to play EL games then too. I know some leagues have winter breaks, but if European games cant start before the season starts, then they can be played during winter too.

Potentially means there are 76 games to be played.

            38 – domestic season
            12 – CL
            14 – Europa
            5 – FA Cup
            7 – League Cup

And that's without postponements or early season qualifiers etc. Playing twice a week that's 38 weeks minimum worth of games.

38 games are at the weekend...

A lot of the FA Cup games are at the weekend...

Only senior players are used for 2 or 3 of the League Cup games, plus the final is at the weekend.

I know they're mostly at the weekend, but you can play at max twice a week. If a Arsenal made the CL final, FA Cup final and League cup final they will have played 64 matches next season (14 CL, 6 LC, 6 FAC, 38 PL).

With even more match days where Europa needs to be played (78 match days) at twice a week is 39 weeks MINIMUM.

Oh come on Billy, u are basing your argument on a team reaching 3 finals. Perhaps the European games & the domestic cup games could be rotated to suit, as a team only plays in one European cup.

Anyhow, I just asked a question & u answered it. You may well correct.

They aren't less appealing at the start of the season, but maybe once the Europa League starts. Spurs have a good sized squad to deal with the demands of Thursday/Sunday games, and they have been doing it for the last few years now so they know what is needed. I think Everton will suffer though for sure. I still think they will finish top 6

Am I the only one that thinks Columbia will struggle against Uruguay?

Uruguay are a strong side, even without Suarez and Columbia will be vulnerable on the counter if they continue to attack in the same way they did against the easier opponents of their group.

I Definitely wouldn't go with both James and Cuadrado in fantasy when the money could be utilised to far greater effect by spreading the risk.

They aren't vulnerable on the counter.
Except Cavani, they are a bunch of old, slow 30-year olds who know they are well past their prime, and play similarly.

I could see Columbia lose but I'd be shocked to see them struggle. I think they have enough good pieces to adjust with most opponents.

I think it will be a low scoring game. I think without Suarez Uruguay will set up very defensively.

in iTeam is 3-5-2 the best formation? With all the goals so far at the WC can't see many clean sheets, esp as clean sheets are only awarded after 120 mins of action. So any 0-0 draws would need to go all the way to penalties to get the clean sheet points.

Maybe. I've not had many points off my defenders. One late goal conceded loses six points.

For those planning for a triple German defence, I did this against Greece for a fantasy game in the Euro 2012 quarter finals. They then conceded twice and the German defender that scored a goal was the one I didn't pick of course. Lesson learned 🙂

Does anyone have detailed stats to compare Blind, Janmaat and de Vriy?

Basically when you take off their goals and assists who's the best pick?

Am I mad? I seem to be the only one thinking Brazil are on their way out of this tournament.

Also, can't decide between cuadrado and gutierrez for Colombia, any thoughts? I'm leaning more towards cuadrado...

You're not mad. They really are on their way out. I'm hoping Neymar will score a couple to counteract Alexis' hat trick though, seeing as I have them both in my squad. 🙂
