Ronald Koeman moved into the transfer for the second time last week by acquiring striker Graziano Pelle from former club Feyenoord on a three-year contract. The 28-year-old teams up with the Dutchman for the third time in his career, having also worked under his guidance at AZ Alkmaar, and his arrival hands the Saints a very prolific replacement for the departed Rickie Lambert:

Discussing his move with the club’s official site, Pelle admitted he didn’t need persuading to join the Koeman revolution for the season ahead:

“I had some teams interested in me, but this is going to be the best choice for me because the club wants to keep improving every year. The talks between us were only short in terms of how long it took to convince each other. I was pretty sure that, for me, this would be a great step. [Ronald] Koeman and I worked together for two amazing years at Feyenoord, and I hope that it will be the same here.”

The History

A product of the Lecce youth system, the Italian made his debut in back in January 2004. Pelle was unable to make any impact, though, and managed just 12 goalless appearances over three years at the club – loaned out to lower league Catania on three occasions over that period, he notched 16 times in 69 appearances.

In July 2007, Pelle left his native country to sign for Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar. Spending four years in the Eredivisie, he struggled to make any real impact and netted only 14 times in 78 league outings before moving back to Italy with Parma. His toils continued, with a single goal in 12 appearances prompting loan stints at Sampdoria (four goals in 16 league games) and a first year under Koeman at Feyenoord, where he served up an excellent 29 goals and nine assists in 33 matches over 2012/13.

Midway through that loan spell with Feyenoord, Pelle signed a four-year deal with the Dutch outfit and officially joined on a permanent deal in the summer of 2013. Once again, he served up the goals for Koeman’s side, with 26 goals and six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions – indeed, over his two years with Feyenoord, an average of 0.88 goals per game was third around Europe, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo more prolific.

The Prospects

Earlier in the summer, the doubters were circling after Southampton lost their former manager and three key players but Koeman’s knowledge of the Dutch top-flight has quickly pacified Saints fans and Fantasy managers alike.

The acquisition of playmaker Dusan Tadic (16 goals and 14 assists last season) in addition to Pelle certainly suggests that Koeman has added real quality to the squad and more than atoned for the departure of Lallana and Lambert. Discussing his new forward with the club’s official website, the Dutchman summed up Pelle’s best qualities:

“I had Graziano in my team for my last two years at Feyenoord. He scored a lot of goals – more than 50 in two seasons – and they brought a lot of points to the club. Goals mean points, and we needed a good player in that position after Rickie Lambert left. In terms of his qualities, he’s a tall striker with a lot of movement and he’s fast. He’s a player who gives confidence to the team because he keeps the ball, and he’s very dangerous in front of goal. He’s almost 29 years old, so he brings a little bit of experience to a young team.”

Although the rebuilding is coming along nicely, the Saints new boys may need time to acclimatise to their new environment. Luckily, the transition has been made easier by a superb opening schedule which many may find hard to resist as we start to assemble our squads for the season ahead. Koeman’s side face just two of last term’s top eight in their opening 12 fixtures, with their first six home games seeing West Brom, Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester all make their way to St Mary’s.

Coming in at just 7.5 in FPL and 7.4 in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game, Pelle has been reasonably priced for the campaign ahead. An eighth place finish last time around under Mauricio Pochettino – albeit impressive – ensures the club have no European fixtures to contend with, making rotation unnecessary and first-team starts assured. Furthermore, Lambert’s departure should ensure the Italian is handed spot-kicks and if he can even come close to replicating his previous displays under Koeman, that opening run of matches has the potential to richly reward those willing to invest.

Can't see two left footers playing cb for spurs. Both like playing left side cb so they wouldn't have any balance. Vertonghen plus another with chiriches on the bench imo

Yes definitely. It makes sense if you think about it as the cb often has to cover behind the fb so they need to be able to tackle and pass with the left foot if they are playing left sided cb.

There should be at least one 5m spurs option though alright. I do fear pochetino will be a rotating nightmare when he has a squad like spurs do. He was bad enough at Southampton and they had no squad.

Aren't there plenty of teams playing two right footed CBs? How is that any different?

I'd be the first one to admit that I don't have any examples ready, but I cannot believe that about 50% of the world's CBs are left footed...

Yes there are but not by choice. As you say 50% of cb's are not left footed so the weaker teams usually have to make do with someone adequate on their left side playing left side cb. It is not ideal though

This is one of those odd things. Somehow it is never considered to be a problem when there are two right footers, but once there are two lefties, everybody is sure there can be no balance. Same in attack, everybody kept on pointing out the number of lefties in Arsenal attack, while many teams have 0-1 left footed players in their attacking 4-6 players.

There are not enough top left footed cb's to go around so right footed guys adequate on their left play there.

Most left footers are actually pretty good on their right too so it might not be much of a problem for them. I guess we'll see soon enough

Sounds a bit like Giroud might not start 100% of PL games. Makes Alexis more attractive when Walcott returns and that's a very obvious doubling up option and should coincide with a great run of fixtures.

Debuchy is a great option, my intial concern is that after Palace the fixtures dip for a while.

Don't see much point in Schmeichel if you already have Courtois. Save the 0.5 and get a cheap 4.0 keeper

Also Bruce is not a sure starter...

liverpol didnt look particularly good going forward in those games though, I seem to recall alot of those games they only scored one goal (of course sturridge was scoring them), the chances of him keeping that up over a longer period are pretty slim imo

yeah in the first five games they managed two goals only once, when saurez returned they started scoring bucketloads & maintained it all season, he completely changed the way they played, the only way liverpool will be as effective this season is if they somehow find a way to replace that through lallana, sterling etc which i hihgly doubt will happen.

He's proven he can score without Suarez both at the beginning of last season and the end of the previous one. BR has gotten some potentially great playmakers in, as well as still having Coutinho and Sterling. He should still score plenty. 11.5 worth? Who knows...

It's the 11.5 that's the issue for me. He can score without Suarez, no doubt, but some seem to think he'll beat last year's goal tally which I'm not convinced of.

Yep I think he got overpriced a bit, but if he scored the same amount of goals I won't complain about the price. Think that's definitely possible. Would really really love it if he was 10.5 thiugh.

He's the new focal point of the team. Could go either way, but personally I don't see it changing much. Obviously no Suarez is a big difference, but he won't be 'sharing' goals and chances as much.

Sturridge is greedy. He gonna get loads of goals and less assists, that's for sure.

With the assistance of Markovic and Sterling from the wing and Coutinho, Lallana, Hendo and Gerrard feed the ball from deep.

Regression and what not, his finishing and conversion was twice as good as any other season if I remember right (did an article about it in the community area somewhere a while ago). With ACON as well to consider, unless he's moved CAM which I just can't see, I don't think he'll score as well.

Think as of pre-ACON, because you can easily sell him before that. Will hhe not score as well before that?

I posted here a few times his shot conversion stats and they were very much twisted by his penalty and free kick duties. His open play shot conversion rate was very good, but not insane, nothing that he couldn't keep up.

This team is so sexy it should be Rated 18

    Mannone / Schmeichel
(Leicester - good defensive record last season - lets hope they can emulate in PL and keeper rotation scares me...so I try not fiddle too much.

Cahill (Fixtures) / Shaw (Fixtures ) / Ward (5.0 Bargain) / Morgan (LEI Cpt) / Bruce (DUD)
Yaya (DUH) / Hazard / Sanchez / Jedinak (Punt) / Albrighton (Fodder)
    Rooney / Dzeko / Naismith

I rate Rooney over RVP, Dzeko to fill Aguero's injured boots and Naismith is really a points sub if need be.

This sets me up 4.4.2 for the start of the season, to get a feel of what is going on first.
Hard hitting midfield, decent up front and solid at the back - I like the balance and it wont take much to tweak a player or two wasting too many transfers.

So that said - I LOOOOVVEEEE this team and it will probably change in the next 10 mins.

I don't have the big three midfielders which you have 🙁 but
              Mannone - Krul
              Cahill - Vertonghen - Mariappa -( Rosenior - Pocognoli)
              Cesc - Mata - Ramsey - Siggy ( Albrighton)
              Dzeko - Strurridge - Pelle

Maybe not as good as yours bro haha but i do love the Jedinak punt being an aussie myself 🙂

I just can't bring myself to bring in Yaya.

It doesn't see like a smart move right now. At least see what all this transfer fuss is about. Make sure his head is in the right place. Thats a lot of money to spend on a big question mark.

Jedinak is a punt and Naismith, well at 5.0 and for now pretty much all Everton has as striker material - a gamble for me. Yaya doesn't leave me much cash... so I make do. Both Punts really but the rest is gold.

Transferred RvP -> Rooney, ended up with this & 1.5itb

    DDG, 4.0

    Baines, Mariappa, Cameron, Rosenoir, Chambers

Silva, Fab, Punch, De Jong, Tiote

    Aguero, Jelavic, Rooney

Thoughts? & 1.5 to midfield (could change Silva, De Jong -> 9.0, Nasri/Lallana/Sterling), invest In defence or gamble on Pelle/Tadic?

Wisdom not playing unless transferred (but I've got him in place-holding for a 4.0 too)

      Duff probably not playing

Vlaar's opening schedule is terrible if he stays at Villa

Jones at WBA doesn't have a great sched either, there are better options at 4.5 for defense

They're just getting rewarded for doing what they are on the pitch to primarily do. They will inevitably lose more BPS than a defender from shots off target, missing big chances, so it should be weighted that way imo.

Actual points are based on their likelihood, so obviously strikers get less per goal etc, but a good performance from a striker is about getting goals, a defender about keeping a CS and keeping the opposition at bay, a GK about CS and saves and a mid is a combination of everything, which is reflected in the BPS system, albeit not ideally.

Wrote about / researched this earlier.

Outside of putting the ball in the net Carroll has been one of the most threatening attackers over the past cpl years.

His issues is his conversion rate... A paltry 4% last year.

If he got that up into the 'normal' 10/15% range then he would have nabbed 8 goals in his 15 games last year.

Extrapolated that over 30 games & you'd have a 15 goal man for £7mil, not too shabby.

      IF, IF, IF...
