Alan Pardew continued his summer spending spree last week with the acquisition of Emmanuel Riviere from Monaco for around £6 million. The 24-year-old frontman is the fifth new signing to arrive on Tyneside as the Magpies manager looks to improve his options in the final third after loan signing Loic Remy returned to parent club QPR.

With out-of-contract Shola Ameobi also leaving and Papiss Cisse sidelined for a number of months due to a broken kneecap, Pardew was clearly delighted to land one of his long-term targets:

“This is an important signing because we know that in the striking department, with Papiss (Cisse) injured, we needed to improve that area. We have looked at Emmanuel for a while and we know he will score goals for us. Now we have an offensive line that will threaten the best Premier League sides with Emmanuel, Remy Cabella and Siem de Jong all on board.”

The new boy was similarly pleased with the move, admitting that his move to the English top-flight has realised a lifelong ambition:

“My dream was always to play in the Premier League and so when Newcastle called me, I said yes. I am a striker who is fast and strong, and I score goals. I think my characteristics are good for the Premier League. I love space to run and tire out defenders, and I work for the team. I want to adapt quickly to the Premier League because it is not Ligue 1. They are very different. I will work hard to adapt fast, and to play for Newcastle.”

The History

Born in Martinique, Riviere joined the youth ranks of Espoir Saint-Luce back in 1996 before his performances at the Clairefontaine academy persuaded Saint Etienne to snap him up as a 15-year-old. Handed a first-team debut during 2008/09, he managed nine goals and three assists in 38 Ligue 1 games over his first couple of campaigns before eight goals and 10 assists in 2010/11 caught the attention of Toulouse.

Riviere spent two years at his new club, though his form was hardly prolific – nine goals and two assists from 44 league matches later, he joined Monaco in January 2013. After serving up four goals and a couple of assists in 14 appearances over his first few months, the 24-year-old turned in the most prolific season of his career last term, netting 10 times from 30 appearances in Ligue 1.

At international level, Riviere has represented France at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and scored nine times from a total of 34 appearances.

The Prospects

Versatile enough to also be fielded out wide, Riviere’s fleet of foot is likely to see him play on the shoulder of the last defender in the Magpies’ lone forward role, as Pardew looks for a like-for-like replacement for Loic Remy. With 14 strikes and three assists in 26 appearances on loan last time round, the latter scored at least twice as many goals as any Newcastle player but his subsequent return to parent club QPR has left a huge gap to fill.

After netting just 43 times in 2013/14, Newcastle clearly need bolstering in attacking areas. As Remy and Yohan Cabaye both proved, though, there’s Fantasy potential in Pardew’s squad and the Magpies manager will be hoping that Riviere – reasonably priced at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.1 in the Sky Sports game – can thrive up front after a summer of investment has added a much-needed creativity to the Tyneside team, with fellow new boys Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella looking canny business by Pardew.

Bearing in mind he’s only hit double figures once, there’s a degree of doubt over Riviere’s ability to make an instant impact. To begin with, those seeking to invest in the new-look Newcastle may turn to de Jong, in particular, as a viable option. Purchased as a replacement for Cabaye, the former Ajax skipper is expected to be fielded in “the hole” behind Riviere and arrives in the North East with an excellent record – scoring 10 or more goals in four of his last five seasons (also managing seven in 19 appearances last term), his classification as a midfielder (7.0 in FPL, 6.2 in the Sky Sports game) across the Fantasy games is also of particular interest.

If Riviere can quickly settle to the Premier League, though, he has the potential to flourish amid an opening schedule that smiles fairly kindly on Pardew’s side. Following a testing Gameweek 1 visit to City, Newcastle face just one of last term’s top eight in their following seven matches – with Palace, Hull and Leicester paying visit, and trips to the likes of Villa and Swansea also on their early agenda, his early form certainly looks worth monitoring for those on the lookout for a mid-price option up top.

Surely Hazard is s better pick than Fabregas? I keep wanting Fabregas instead. I think Hazard is explosive whereas Fabregas looks like a more consistent option. Any views?

      Very good team? Yes
Very good fantasy football team? Not so sure

Arsenal poor starting fixtures, there's better value out there than Debuchy. You haven't got any defenders from proven, solid sides - Chelsea, Stoke etc. I've gone for too many "fashionable" players in past seasons and am making sure I don't make the same mistake this time round.

Bench too weak - injuries/rotation will happen.

I'm a Hull fan and at the moment they are both playing together but I can see Jelavic getting dropped relatively early if he is not performing whereas Long will always play. On the other hand Long will occasionally move out wide when playing a good side so we can keep 10 men behind the ball whereas Jela will always be up top when playing.
Personally I wouldn't even consider a Hull attacker as there will be much rotation with the Europa league and they don't score much anyway.

There will be too much rotation and we just aren't a goal scoring team. I will only consider Hull defenders as we are great at home defensively. Davies will be solid as usual and watch out for a new left back coming in. Could be a cheap route in to a solid defence (home games only.)

Evening y'all. RMT anyone? Pretty please 😉

Krul/Elliot - bar opening home game v Man City fixtures are looking good right up till gw 9. Potential huge amount [at least that's what I'm hoping for] of saves points and a low price tag a major "aye" here imo. Not a big fan of gk rotation.

Debuchy/Vermaelen/Mariappa/Cameron/Vlaar - Of course as long as Verma ends up @ OT and I am not so sure about Mariappa's and Cameron's game time. Villans are crap at the back but at least Vlaar is nailed on 😀 Dunno, your thoughts?

Eriksen/Knockaert/Silva/Sanchez/Siggy Not much to talk about here. Got Knockaert and Siggy because of a good rotation partnership oh and yeah,I do hope Siggy will end up at Selhurst Park. So once again, it's a "wait and see" fantasy pick.

Rooney/Pelle/Costa are my front three. The situation here is that I can't decide if I want to downgrade Silva, get Tadic instead and switch Pelle with Dzeko and invest that "extra" money somewhere else. Maybe in defence for example.

    Well, that's it I reckon.
    Have your say guys.
I do apologise for my bad english
    and thanks in advance!

Newcastle haven't been known for keeping clean sheets, no matter their fixtures last season. They haven't exactly improved with transfers coming in.
Krul was 12th best in GK score, having played the 8th-most minutes.
If you believe in rotation w/Sunderland, go ahead.

Debuchy and Vermaelen - nobody will have intelligent insight for you. Everything is speculation just yet.
Mariappa should be good value for 4.5m, and he's in my team no question. If i can resist taking Ward instead.
Vlaar is flavor of the week. He does play for Villa, you know.
Cameron faces competition from Shawcross and Huth. Huth was injured for most of last season, and that's why Cameron played so many minutes.

Eriksen Silva Siggy - good picks
Sanchez - costs way way too much. Ramsey will IMO get you within 5% of the same points haul for 1.5m less. Plus we don't know if he's PL quality yet. He could be the next Roberto Saldado for all anyone *knows*.
Knockaert - another unproven PL asset, costs as much as proven PL assets like Shelvey. Too punty for me. For all anyone knows, he is Elokobi 2.0

      Pelle/Costa - see Sanchez/Knockaert above
Rooney - The first name on my team sheet this season. Can't believe he is only 10.5m, honestly

        to put it another way:

Between Debuchy, Vermaelen, Sanchez, Siggy, Knockaert, Pelle and Costa (half of your entire team), you will probably get maybe 2-3 reliable players.
... but that means you are probably going to end up with 4-5 players that you need to transfer out.

If you play it more conservatively, you will have to take 4-5 fewer hits, and that 20pts goes a long way.

What's everyone's template plan for GW2 transfers, after Yaya scores twice?

Drop Hazard, and take a hit to downgrade Sigurdsson to Keiran Richardson?

Yaya won't be the same this season. A lack lustre WC performance, the tragic loss of his brother and, to top it off... no birthday card from Manchini. Shell of a man.

    GK: newcastle-sunderland rotation
    Krul, Mannone
DF: CRY, WH rotation, SOT-Lei rotation, Terry nailed on
Terry, Fonte, Creswell, Ward, de Laet
MF: Haz - class, Mata - fixtures, Punch - good value, Mirallas worth a punt
    Hazard, Mirallas, Mata, Puncheon, Arnautovic
ATT: Jel - fixtures, Rooney - fix, Gir - value
    Jelavic, Rooney, Giroud

      9/10 i love it

I've been looking for a way to get Puncheon into my own team (replacing Shelvey) and I'm a believer.
Creswell's a good player, but I'm not sold on WH. If rotation works for you, he is the one to choose IMO
Mirallas isn't for me, but your midfield looks really good.
Front line has a lot of upside, too. Giroud may go wild with those mids sending him through-balls.

You have a well-balanced team with mainly nailed-on players. I like it, and although it has that GK rotation, you avoid the (4.0 defender + Albrighton) template.
If I inherited your team, I'd look for 0.5m somewhere to swap Mirallass for Eriksen

Dzeko is an option as well for the price. They both should be ok for the beginning of the season, as Walcott is out and Aguero not fully fit yet

    RMT, have 3 big questions.

Am I spending too much in forward areas?
Ramsey over Silva/Fab/Ozil etc? (Keeping Mata due to United fixtures)
Dzeko over Giroud/Bony? Or should I get a cheaper striker and improve defence?

And yeah, Dummett is a 2-3 GW player, like Jenkinson in that 2012/13 season. Santon is injured, will remove Dummett and I am sure by then a 4.0 bargain will have come. If not, will have to downgrade elsewhere - pretty sure a bargain should be there.

Mannone / Krul (The GK pairing is subject to change. Not convinced by it.)

    Chambers / Chester / Dummett / Cameron / Rafael

    Ramsey / Mata / Barkley / Eriksen / Albrighton

Diego Costa / Sturridge / Dzeko

Yeah, I am a 3 big hitter strikers kind of guy. My saddest moment till date in Fantasy is that Aguero injury last season which robbed me off Aguero-Rooney-Suarez (not many had all 3).

Silva got 12 assists, 7 goals and 20 bps last season and has consistently scored 5-6+ ppg the past 4 seasons. Last year he's only fpl crime was living in the shadow of yaya and as a silva owner in that time, me and many others hold a grudge against him. now that yaya has been priced at 11 i honestly do think that Silva could prove value at 9. Tryin to work him in but i want Dzeko too and dont wanna double up

Yup.. can easily swap him out for Nasri/Sterling etc if that happens. the best time to get on injury prone players like Silva is when they are fully fit early in the season. when UCL and fatigue and fixture congestion come into the picture its best to avoid them
