Last week saw the official launch of the new pay-to-play Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game for the season ahead. After taking part in the beta-phase in the final few months of the previous campaign, we’re keen to get involved again and plan to publish an in-depth guide over the next week or so, assessing the rule set and variety of strategies involved:

Costing £5 entry per team, the UFPL is a squad-based game that offers a cool £25,000 winner’s prize and a monthly prize of £1,000. For those unfamiliar, we’re essentially handed a budget of £160m to build our 25-man squads but, for each Gameweek, can only select an 18-man squad, leaving seven of our squad out in the cold.

The UFPL favours the more hands-on approach and affords us a “stick or twist” dilemma for every day of the Gameweek, which allows us the option of replacing poor performers with options off the bench – a concept familiar with those who played the FIFA McDonald’s World Cup 2014 or the UEFA Champions League games.

For those who are looking to get involved or have already began to tinker with their first drafts, we’ve set up the official Fantasy Football Scout league – to join, the code is 524-87.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not quite. Pick the players who offer the most potential for scoring high with minimal risk of being duds.

For instance, I think Costa could end up scoring the most points, I however believe that he has a very high chance of failing. Under your system I buy him regardless.

So you"just" weigh up the options and decide. What's the need for tables and graphs and heat maps and weight and height and shoe size?

You are right, there is no need for graphs, heat maps, weight, height or shoe size.

Tables are very useful. Likelyhood * Magnitude = Risk.

Here's some stats on potent left-backs last season, and how they may figure under the new BPS system.

What is clear is that Luke Shaw will prosper if he keeps up this level. And a likelihood that chances created and crosses becoming chances will increase at United.

    Luke Shaw:

    Matches: 35

    Dribbles: 111

    Crosses: 142

    Chances created: 35

    Patrice Evra:

    Matches: 33

    Dribbles: 51

    Crosses: 130

    Chances created: 38

    Leighton Baines:

    Matches: 32

    Dribbles: 68

    Crosses: 130

    Chances created: 49

    Kieran Gibbs:

    Matches: 28

    Dribbles: 51

    Crosses: 71

    Chances created: 13

Evening all. Does anybody have an opinion regarding RVP v Rooney in a starting lineup? My heart tells me that RVP will go some way to recreating his awesomeness of seasons-old with LVG in charge but my head says Rooney will just outscore him (whilst both being eclipsed by someone else).

Well if you think the scores are going to be close then go for Rooney because of the price difference. I'm fairly confident RVP will outscore Rooney, at least per appearance, but the question is will he outscore him enough for the extra 1.5 million to be worth it.

    RP: My thoughts on fabregas..

a lot of people saying he will be in the double pivot with matic but also saying he will have lampard's role. when lampard was banging them in for chelsea in his pomp he wasn't in a double pivot.

and cannot see mourinho starting too many games with just one holding midfielder in matic. he isn't the biggest fan of leaving his defence exposed. he used to have lampard with someone like makelele & essien with him

‘Look, if I have a triangle in midfield – Claude Makelele behind and two others just in front – I will always have an advantage against a pure 4-4-2 where the central midfielders are side by side. That’s because I will always have an extra man. It starts with Makelele, who is between the lines. If nobody comes to him he can see the whole pitch and has time. If he gets closed down it means one of the two other central midfielders is open. If they are closed down and the other team’s wingers come inside to help, it means there is space now for us on the flank, either for our own wingers or for our full-backs. There is nothing a pure 4-4-2 can do to stop things’. - Mourinho
    http://www.zonalmarking.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/new_chelsea_drogba_lampard_terry_cole.jpg

i'm worried fabregas will just rotate with the other attacking mids. if he is lampard's replacement then he will not be in the double pivot. lampard only played there when he was getting on a bit and he rarely played there in the big games

I'm sure I have seen this before.

And you don't spend that amount of money without aiming to use him. Plus the experience. I am going with him for now.

Bear in mind Oscar had a lengthy world cup, so Mourinho may start without him anyway.

not great at tracking/tackling though from what I remember. willian/oscar both put in shifts. I think fabregas could be dropped in the bigger games when mourinho opts for the disciplined sitting back approach

He will either play as a 10, or in a 433 with Matic and Ramires, in my mind.

I think it's a wait and see with him. For now I think Ozil, Ramsey and Silva are all better options.

Pre season bigger games usually give us a bit more of an inclination. Not the ones against Accrington, but the harder games later on.

The agreement was more on the 10 role of the 433.

the link shows mourinho's favoured 4-3-3. one deep-lying mid, one holding mid and one attacking mid. that leaves oscar/willian/fabregas fighting for one position

fabregas won't have the essien or the makelele role IMO

This is where it get's tricky; because Mata was sold so Oscar could play as a 10, and £30m was spent on Willian. Just too many options there for FF i think.

The fact that Chelsea were trying to sign Khedira or Pogba means that Fabregas is seen either as the top of a midfield trio or maybe even behind Costa?

couple spreadsheets you guys might find useful

In terms of balance of my team, 3-4-3, the news today has allowed me to get 2 good picks in my team and move to the formation I want.

I was hoping chelsea would have a 6m nailed on defender. I had my hesitations with azpil but luis for me is that one nailed on defender. Can now potentially remove debuchy.

Was looking for a mid-priced striker to come in. Had giroud but wasn't convinced. The negredo injury has allowed for me to bring dzeko in

Also by getting dzeko in and I can make some money from him. When negredo is back dzeko's price would have hopefully increased a fair bit.

save the attempted put downs mate and at least come back at me with a decent argument as to why u think luis will not be subject to rotation...

the chelsea back line as it stands is as solid as they come

they lost one top class left back in ashley cole a player better than both azpi an luis imo who spent much of last season on the bench and they now have replaced him.. we all know at the big clubs with the amount of games its wise to have 2 top players in each position...

luis imo wont walk into that team and chalk up 30 to 35 starts while one of ivanovic or azpi rots on the bench... wake up

I anticipate a starting line up of:

        Begovic,
        Bardsley, Shawcross, Wilson, Pieters
        Nzonzi, Sidwell
        Odemwingie, Ireland, Arnautovic

I dont see it. Every year some of the cheap defences go strong early doors. No point overspending till christmas when the big teams start grinding the gears.

I had a good long look at Chelseas clean sheets in the Prem last season pre Matic signing and then following his signing. The reason I done this is imo he made a huge difference protecting the back 4. He was class in that position. their clean sheet percentage before he arrived was 39%. From his 1st game to the end of the season that increased to 57%. On that basis, I'm having them from the start

Nice work GD. I may for similiar reasons, but it doesnt make me happy. One of my strengths is picking up cheap CS's regularly, absolutely hate wasting money on a grinder team such as Chelsea. But there may be no other option this time.

i had azpil and terry last year both at the same time and got lots of crap scores, i then took them out just before Matic arrived, lol. I noticed, believe me.

                Shaw, Pieters, Clyne, Davies, Figueroa

see I like Shaw, I could potentially double up since I will not have Rooney and am unsure what role Mata will play yet

I like the Naylor pick and he is perfect to rotate with Pieters. Not sure on the Saints/Hull rotation.

as you know I hate rotation

Krul/Elliot is not especially popular but

            a) it's cheap (8.5)
            b) it's rotation proof
            c) good value for saves (and possibly CS if Newcastle can get back to the form of 2 seasons ago)

No he won't. It's a risk. Smaling, Evans and Jones are much better than they displayed last season. With a proper midfield (once United buy 1 or 2 more cms), they won't leak goals. Vermaelen's being brought to be a back up LB and CB.

Money for one, may also want to work under his former coach and reunite with his close friend RvP. Probably realizes in the long run United still have a higher chance of winning trophies than Arsenal.

Tbh, I don't know. For £10m you could get better players.

Maybe he wants a cheap United defender in his FPL team.

Yea but he's not good enough for Arsenal, Surely Jones/Smalls/Jevan are established and better ?

            Have you watched Smalling?

Jones is walking injury (not that Verm isn't)

            Evans...erm......

Agree with most but why not then try sign Hummels or someone established etc?
For me Verm is another sick note, another liability

                Lovern maybe - seems he's available ?
If he spent another few bob he could be sure of quality IMHO.

You have to remember just how long Wenger kept trying to find a way to use him. He is a really good player, just doesnt fit the way Arsenal play. If Van Gaal utilises him properly he will be really good for united.

Nothing to write home about here, if he's not good enough for Arsenal he certainly isn't good enough for Utd.

I did hear rumours that LvG planned to use him as a 'libero' type in a 3 man defence.

He could work ala David Luiz

if he can back to the 7 goals a season for he really will be essential.

He also loves getting on the end of RvP corners
