We roll out number eight in our series of articles focusing on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player Price List this lunchtime. Having looked over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders and Budget Midfielders,Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders, we turn our attentions to the forwards, starting with what’s on offer at the bottom end of the market.

Arsenal’s Joel Campbell could be an interesting option amid reports that Arsene Wenger is keen to loan him out to a Premier League side this season. The Costa Rica striker served up 11 goals and 12 assists at Greek side Olympiakos last term and with both Everton and Southampton reportedly sniffing around, could be a viable option at just 5.5. Certainly, with Alexis Sanchez added to the mix, Campbell will surely need to move away from the Emirates this term in his quest for regular game time.

With Christian Benteke still sidelined through injury, Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor will be crucial to Villa’s chances over the first few months. Both come in at 5.5 apiece after poor displays over 2013/14 – Weimann managed five goals and five assists, whilst Agbonlahor produced four goals and seven assists; hardly prolific form. Bearing in mind that the midlands side have six tough fixtures in the first eight Gameweeks, few will be willing to take a punt, though Darren Bent, at a mere 5.0, notched twice in the club’s first summer friendly and may yet come into contention for a starting berth again.

Burnley’s Danny Ings will set you back 6.0 after producing 21 goals and seven assists for the Clarets in last season’s promotion campaign. With strike partner Sam Vokes (20 goals and five assists) sidelined for the first few months with knee ligament damage, Ings looks the likeliest source of goals for Sean Dyche’s side, though Ashley Barnes (4.5) could retain his starting berth in Vokes’ absence and has already notched twice in pre-season.

After scoring just 33 times last term, Palace’s forwards are understandably low-end assets. Five goals in 32 appearances sums up Marouane Chamakh’s (5.5) impact, whilst Dwight Gayle (5.5) will be hoping for improved pitch time after scoring twice in each of the final two Gameweeks of 2013/14. With the Eagles defence likely to offer far better value and Jason Puncheon available for just 6.0 in midfield, it’s fair to say that snapping up a Palace striker will be far from a priority. Gayle’s form and opportunities are worth monitoring, however.

Three goals and two assists in his final eight appearances for Everton last term underlines Steven Naismith’s attacking potential. In spite of his 5.0 price tag, a lack of guaranteed starts will ensure most steer clear – the Scot is perhaps more likely to feature off the bench for the Toffees as Roberto Martinez rotates in the final third in order to cope with their Europa League schedule. Arouna Kone (5.5) managed just 82 minutes before falling foul of injury last season. Martinez clearly favours the Ivorian, having also acquired him for Wigan, but a regular starting role looks highly unlikely as the Everton boss attempts to step up his pursuit of Romelu Lukaku once again.

Hull pair Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long are both available for 6.0 ahead of a decent opening schedule. Admittedly, neither player was prolific after arriving at the KC in January, with four goals apiece from 16 and 15 appearances respectively but the addition of Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince on the flanks should improve prospects in the final third. With QPR, Stoke, Villa, West Ham, Newcastle and Palace in the first seven Gameweeks, Jelavic, with spot-kicks in his armoury, has appeared on a few radars. Certainly Hull attacking coverage looks a viable option for the opening few Gameweeks and, while Snodgrass will likely be the favoured route, both Jelavic and Long have clear merits as third striker options.

Championship winners Leicester hand us an intriguing option in the form of David Nugent. The Foxes main forward racked up 20 goals and 12 assists over 46 appearances last season and, available for 5.5, is also number one for penalties. Nugent (who notched twice in Leicester’s first pre-season friendly) is a little more expensive than James Vardy (5.0), who produced 16 goals and 10 assists last time around but with just one start in the final seven fixtures, seemed to fall down the pecking order – the recent acquisition of Leonardo Ulloa from Brighton compounds matters. A horrendous opening six matches (EVE, che, ARS, sto, MUN, cpl) should be reason enough to steer clear until the schedule improves around the Gameweek 7 point.

Louis Van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford has the potential to shake things up. Whilst Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie are expected to nail down starting berths, both Javier Hernandez (6.0) and James Wilson (4.5) will be hoping to force their way into the new manager’s plans – the latter scored twice in his only appearances of 2013/14 after being handed his debut by Ryan Giggs and could feature more off the bench this time around if he impresses the Dutchman during pre-season.

QPR’s Charlie Austin (6.0) seems set to lead the line for the season ahead after serving up 17 goals and three assists in 31 appearances last term. The former Burnley man ended as the R’s top scorer, despite missing a number of matches after undergoing shoulder surgery. If Harry Redknapp continues with last season’s 4-4-1-1 formation, spot-kick taker Austin looks the man most likely to produce for the Loftus Road outfit – he grabbed the only goal in the R’s first pre-season friendly earlier this week. Bobby Zamora may be 4.5 but the veteran is far more likely to rely on game time off the bench, with his manager looking to strengthen his options up top. Having scored just 60 times in 46 Championship matches in 2013/14, it’s safe to assume that Redknapp’s side may struggle to find their top flight scoring boots. Even so, with three kind home matches (HUL, SUN, STO) in the first five, Austin looks a strong option for those decided on big midfield investment. Unlike Hull, QPR currently lack a standout alternative in the middle of the park to cover attacking returns.

For those weighing up the merits of Austin and Burnley’s Ings, the latter’s opening away schedule may sway matters, though. Redknapp’s side have five very tough road trips to kick off the campaign (tot, mun, sot, whm, che), suggesting may will be more inclined to bench Austin on his travels, whereas Burnley pay visit to Swansea, West Brom and Leicester in their first four away matches, making Ings more of a “fire and forget” option for our front three.

Young Harry Kane will be looking to step up under new Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino this season. The 5.0-priced striker scored three times in 500 minutes for Tim Sherwood last term, though with the Argentine likely to retain the 4-2-3-1 system utilised at Southampton, it’s debatable whether he’ll place his faith in Kane to lead the line ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado. Certainly, the situation is one to monitor, given Kane’s impressive displays towards the tail-end of the previous campaign.

Peter Crouch remains amongst the low-priced forward despite serving up seven goals and six assists for Stoke. Available for 6.0, there’s a real fear he may lose his starting role to new boy Mame Biram Diouf, though – Mark Hughes attempted to sign the latter during both transfer windows last year, with his pace and power up top perhaps more in sync with the Potters’ new playing style. If Crouch can see off the new boy’s challenge, the opening few fixtures are certainly filled with potential – Stoke’s first six home matches (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) are supplemented by trips to Hull, QPR and Sunderland in a run that pits Hughes’ side against only three of last season’s top eight in the opening 12 Gameweeks. With the acquisition of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona adding to he mix, in addition to 6.5-priced midfield pair Marko Arnautovic and Peter Odemwingie, many will overlook Crouch as Hughes continues the Britannia revolution at pace.

End-of-season hero Connor Wickham and injury-prone Steven Fletcher will set you back 6.0 and 5.5 respectively for Sunderland. Bearing in mind that Gus Poyet prefers a 4-3-3 formation, though, the duo are likely to be in direct competition for the lone forward role – Wickham’s five goals and two assists in the final six fixtures of 2013/14 underlined his potential, whilst Fletcher has recovered from an ankle problem and bagged a brace in the Black Cats’ first summer friendly. If the pre-season matches can shed more light on Poyet’s intentions, the Wearsiders have five decent fixtures in the first seven Gameweeks (wba, qpr, bur, SWA, STO) to reap reward.

Saido Berahino is available for 5.5 after finishing last season as West Brom’s joint-top scorer on five goals. The youngster’s attacking threat may well keep him in contention for a starting berth under new boss Alan Irvine, though with summer signing Brown Ideye lined up for the lone forward role, Berahino’s best bet looks likely to be a role on the flank unless the Baggies move away from a 4-2-3-1 formation utilised by Irvine over the pre-season matches so far.

I done up a list for this years draft of players of what players are best to use within their price bracket to use in each position. I did leave a few out. 6.0 goalkeepers, 7.0 defenders and everything 5.5 and under for the Forward lines all left out as their is no value in them (in my opinion) as they are either just too expensive or just too cheap because everybody expects nothing of them. I left 6.0 forwards in if you are willing for that punt (I know I'm not but know others are). Their are a lot of good players in this year both new and mostly experienced BPL players for two years and counting (with some obvious exceptions of this and last years transfers).

Obviously everybody has their favorite players and it is hard to incorporate the ones you like the most all the time so I will post the list in hopes of aiding that (I may be crazy trying to help the opposition a lot but I like competition).

    The List is as follows:
    GK:
[4.0 Bracket]: Myhill, Given and Gilks
[4.5 Bracket]: Mannone, Krul and Schmeichel
    [5.0 Bracket]: Begovic and Speroni
[5.5 Bracket]: Howard, De Gea and Szezesny

    DEF:
[6.0 Bracket]: Shaw, Mertesacker, Vertoegean and Demichles
[5.5 Bracket]: Debouchy, Lovern, Jagelka and Sanga
[5.0 Bracket]: Ward, Davis, Dawson and Verm (if transfers to united)
[4.5 Bracket]: Vlaar, Cameron, O’Shea and Rio
[4.0 Bracket]: Bruce, Upson and Wisdom

    MID:
[10.0-11.0 Bracket]: Yaya Toure [11], Sanchez [10.5] and Hazard [10]
[9.0 Bracket]: Ramsey, Fabregas, Mata, Ozil, Silva
[8.5 Bracket]: Sterling, Lallana and Nasri
    [8.0 Bracket}: Eriksen and Coutinho
[7.5 Bracket]: Herrera, Mirrilas, Tadic and Schurrle
[7.0 Bracket]: Barkely, de Jong and Paulinho
[6.5 Bracket]: Januzaj, Kagawa and Nolan
[6.0 Bracket]: Henderson, Puncheon and Siggerson (If he transfers)
[5.5 Bracket]: Shelvey, Sidwell and Nobal
[4.5 Bracket]: Albrighton and El Ahmandi

    FWD:
[11.5-12.5 Bracket]: Sturridge [11.5], Agureo [12] and Van Persie [12.5]
    [10.5 Bracket]: Rooney and Costa
    [8.5 Bracket]: Adebayor, Giroud, Dzeko
    [7.5 Bracket]: Remy, Pelle, Lambert
[6.0 Bracket]: Ings, Wickham and Austin

The way I would start to make my team is start with the smallest price you would pay on each area and pick one from each area. They will be your budget players (and mid-price player for a forward of course). I would then pick a second player at the second cheapest you would pay for the respected position.. Keep going in that order (1st cheapest, 2nd cheapest, 3rd cheapist etc) til your team is filled up. I personally was able to get for example one defender form each category to keep that balanced and still managed to get premium players up front and midfield to do the job!

Hope I helped anybody on here!

appreciate the effort, but without any reasonings this is a bit naff. also, its pretty much every nailed on player in the fpl! so a bit pointless.

it's every nailed player yes but it just helps people narrow down the choices also I took some players out within those price ranges cause they are not worth it. I feel these are the players that will get the most points for their teams so should be choosen with great care... Also not all players are actually nailed but said to be given either good rotation or a chance in the first team.

Useful post for newbies and lazy arses 🙂

A few issues though, I always pick my big players first and then work my way down to my cheapies. I want to build my team around the big boys not the cheapies.

Secondly, whats wrong with a 6.0mil goalkeeper like Courtois (assuming he's first choice). You can't buy a Chelsea Dfer for less than 6.0mil, so whay's the problem in making that the goalkeeper? There are actually slight doubts over who is going to play as they have 5 very good (versatile) players competing for 4 spots.

I believe that van Persie is carrying an injury. I am not convinced that Rooney is fit.

I think that LVG will be desperate for someone who can hold the ball up front. 🙂

How many south americans must we see bomb out in england before everyone gets that it's not enough to be a good player in PL. Many do alright and many does it very well but then we have the likes of Veron

Yep, seen him play, live. Lots.
Yep, he is great but England is not for everybody. You think Özil were great last year? Good value even?
In a month or 2 i might be convinced but there have been numerous of failures throughout the years from southamerican players in England.

Ozil and Sanchez are very different players. I reckon Sanchez is better equipped for the Prem with his pace and power. I think he could hit the ground running, but no way of telling how he will fair over here I suppose.

You could be right and that would be nice as i always want good footy to see even as a Utd fan. But i've seen sooooo many very well equiped (no not like that) south americans bomb in England to just shout his name from the rooftops, Veron is one of the best examples one can make.

Hey guys, anybody fancy a preseason fantasy football game? I’m running a draft style fantasy game for the International Champions Cup.

For those who don’t know, it’s a friendly tournament going on in the US this year. Teams involved are:
    Real Madrid
    Man United
    Man City
    Liverpool
    AC Milan
    Inter Milan
    AS Roma
    Olympiacos

The tournament starts on the Thursday, so I’ll need you to be active enough to send me a forty man selection list before the first match, so that’s 1am Friday morning for the Brits.

They’ll be no budgets, and to keep it simple we’ll have five man squads, with no squad restrictions (so you can have five strikers if you want). Points will work the same as FPL, but with no bonus points or save points. If you’re interested, fill out this form:

    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_sCPWmXwHrI6oLx_665DUQ1DJs5p_5rT_KD8TZE9ifE/viewform?usp=send_form

Five spots left, first come first served. Fill out that form and I’ll email you the further details.

Father Dougal's easy test for complete idiots to use to tell if a player is overpriced.

Being a complete idiot, I can't find the other overpriced post that made me think of this. So I'm posting this here and not there. Sorry.

A player is overpriced if his price reflects his best case performance. In other words, if a player has to have the best seasons he could be expected to have in order to justify his price, then he has no upside. If a player has no upside he is overpriced.

For example, Yaya, is not going to have a better season this year than last year. He is priced to reflect the best season he could have. Therefore he is overpriced.

I am not saying that it is wrong to buy overpriced players. That's a different question.

    Hi All,

I just thought I would quickly post up the distribution of player values by position; I think this is useful for ensuring team balance, as ultimately it's a lot cheaper to swap players at certain price points when the season begins and you find out that three of your players are reverse OOP etc.

Of course! But take 8M midfielders for example... There is Eriksen.

If it turns out that he is not playing/useless/injured etc. and you don't have the cash to move up, sideways only gives you lamela, willian and coutinho.

He looks dangerous to own in that respect.

Surely you would just buy someone cheaper and then use the money on the next transfer you want to do?
I'd say that the only really important player prices to consider as to the lack of possible transfers is the cheapest players in each category as how many 4.0 defenders, 4.5 or 5.0 or even 5.5 midfielders or strikers below 7.5 would you really be okay with having to transfer to?

Yes, you can always go down... Just means you don't have as much money as you could have on the pitch for a week or so.

I watched some vids on him recently and then removed him from my team straight away.

All his goals are tap-ins and headers, which is fine when your playing for a high-flying side (in Holland) who are creating things on a plate for you week-in week-out.

But playing for a (upper) mid-table side with a new manager and new system, I have a feeling he is going to need more to his game than that.

Tadic on the other hand looks like a cracking player. Dare I say....... VDV-like. So he's now my newbie punt

I didn't think it was a bad thing necessarily. It's interesting to think about what Hemingway exactly meant in the end, however. Not sure with his excessive drinking and his lifestyle in general that he was exactly the kind who reveled in the responsibilities of parenthood.

It depends on your personality. I suspect with him it was a responsibility he didnt want, and in that way he was held to ransom.

The truth is it shouldnt affect how you act.

I don't know anything about Hemingway's life as a parent but if he was negelctful and led a hedonistic lifestyle then you could interpret him as an emotional hostage through guilt. Perhaps

I presume that the kind of individual he was didn't exactly make him a good candidate for responsibilities of virtually any kind. A man who walked to the beat of his own drum and perhaps did not overly worry himself with what he "should" do according to society's standards. Great discussion, my friends. 19y, in a new enviroment with big expectesions(yep laugh all you want).
Last season, in his safe place, he managed no goals and a whopping 2 assists.

This year he has no idea yet what 3 stooges he has to run in line with, it is probably gonna change throughout the season, week from week. Last year, not so much and that served him and the team well with 14 CS.

Still, so far, he is in above 30% of the teams.... I thank you all, no sheep forgotten.

Fair point. There are other curios in the top % picks lists. Behind Shaw is Vlaar who's part of a terrible defence with horrible opening fixtures. Then there's Bruce and Cameron - neither guarantted starters. In midfield Barkley is 2nd favourite - nasty opening fixtures and in attack Remy is 2nd - is he guaranteed to start?

I haven't read much discussion of Lallana here. Fourth highest scoring midfielder last year at 8.5m isn't that bad -- anyone have a sense of how Liverpool will set up in attack?

I think they will line up:

      Sterling Sturridge Markovic
      -------Lallana Hendo
      -----------Gerrard

Was just thinking the same thing. If he can replicate last year's form, which I see no reason why he can't, then he should be a pretty good FPL value overall. I think many of us are hesitant as to how Liverpool are going to set up and how successful they will be overall. I'm considering him, but there's just something holding me back from true and profound consideration.

I'm watching and waiting but the point I feel we need to realise it's that BR went ultra attacking to suit having Suarez and Sturridge. I'm not saying he won't go attacking again but I feel you may see less of an edge in attack and some more defensive solidity.

One of the many things I've picked up from this site over the past year, is that promoted strikers don't do any good. So I decided to do a little research into that...

    13/14
    Palace: Gayle - 7 Goals (14th)
    Cardiff: Campbell - 6 Goals (15th)
    Hull: Sagbo - 2 Goals (19th)

    12/13
    Southampton: Lambert - 15 Goals (7th)
    Reading: Le Fondre - 12 Goals (9th)
    West Ham: Cole - 2 Goals (19th)

    11/12
    Norwich: Holt - 15 Goals (6th)
    Swansea: Graham - 12 Goals (9th)
    QPR: Helguson - 8 Goals (13th)

    10/11
    Blackpool: DJ Campbell - 13 Goals (5th)
    Newcastle: Ameobi - 6 Goals (12th)
    West Brom: Tchoyi - 6 Goals (12th)

    09/10
    Birmingham: Jerome - 10 Goals (12th)
    Wolves: Doyle - 9 Goals (13th)
    Burnley: Fletcher - 8 Goals (14th)

Barring last season, the promoted strikers have done alright compared to other strikers, and some have done exceptional. But, this doesn't take into consideration how many of these goals scored were penalties or free kicks and whether they had any Premier League experience before hand. It also doesn't include how many assists they got. I didn't have the time to do those bits.

But, for 6.0 I'd be happy if my striker got me 9+ goals like some of these have.

If you look at some of the higher ones on that list (Lambert, Holt, ALF), those strikers had pens (when om the pitch) that can easily add an extra 3-4 goals a season

How many goals though did each of those respective strikers score in the championship? For example, if X striker scored 15gls on championship, but just 3 in Prem, then you can see an issue, however if X striker scored 20gls in championship & 8-10 in Prem, that's actually mot a bad return, seeing as its a 'better' league

I think you're looking at wrongly Jonty.

Ebanks-Blake is a good example but by the same token he never struck me as a natural goalscorer in the same vein as Lambert (the most obvious in the opposite category)

The real trick is seperating the Lamberts from the Ebanks-Blakes

I put Austin firmly in the former category

the problem with these cheap strikers isn't that they might flop...you'll most likely have several players who'll flop...the problem is that they make it tough for you to get an Aguero, Sturridge, Costa, RVP, Rooney etc and let's not forget Dzeko, Bony, Giroud...

theoretically you could say the same about your 5th midfielder if you avoid a cheap striker...but if you have 4 midfielders across the price ranges it's probably easier to fit somebody like Yaya in not least because you'll probably have at least one midfielders who's doing bog-all

I also suspect it'll be easier to get a £4.5m-£5.0m midfielder who isn't useless than a similarly priced striker

you've got to gamble on somebody cheap but I just don't like the pricing structure of a 2 man attack until this season's Jay Rodriguez actually emerges

    Hi all.

Not been around much lately due to being in hospital fighting for my life and that kind of thing. Back with a bang though, this is my year 🙂

Anyway this may have been discussed numerous times, but wanted to put it out there what the point of the initial squad is.

"Our initial picks need to be made in order to not be forced into an early wildcard"

Imagine having that wildcard in your back pocket come the bumper double gameweek in the last third of the season....

To do that, we need to be safe in the initial picks.

Get players with BPL experience who are going to be first choice picks.
The more punts you take, the bigger the potential mess you have to clear up.

With a safe initial squad, you can do minor surgery to get on the bandwagons and keep a strong squad through the difficult early weeks.

Also all talk of planning transfers for GW 2, 3, 4 etc just won't come to fruition.
You will need the transfers for the bandwagons, for the injury, for the unplanned red card etc.

We all want to be clever and find the next Michu before the next guy, but don't paint yourself into a corner that you can't get out of.

    Thoughts?

Double gameweeks are overrated. I've learned that the hard way over the years. Sure, pick up a few guys that are the standouts and have fun with that, but otherwise, DGWs aren't really worth going all in on.

I've been burned tons of times trying to go all in on DGW's. Just a word of caution to not let them take you on a total ride. Sure, they can be great if you get it right. Maybe I need to get it right more often! 🙂 Funny thing is, no matter how many times I tell myself not to get overly caught up in DGW's, the temptation is usually just too much and I go overboard. Then I watch my rank go from 500 or so into the thousands.

Part of the problem is trying to recover your team's balance after DGW's.

That is down to DGW strategy, not my point at all.
Wouldn't you like to have the option of the WC at that point?
If you misuse it, that's a different matter.

Yeah. Just thought I'd toss in my "Beware of the DGW" opinion. Definitely would love to have the option to WC at that point. Heck, a WC in the pocket is always a beautiful thing. I'm a bit impatient with it and usually end up using it early to sort my team out once I get a better idea what players might be more likely to play lots of minutes, etc.

First, I hope that FPL provides a welcome distraction from the bigger and more depressing things is life. I hope that you are in he clear...

Great point about not putting yourself in a corner. There are many speculative picks in the template team. Those that fall flat may be subject to a substantial drop in value. As has been mentioned, one of the keys of the game is preserving and growing team value. Too many punts, and the wildcard may be the only way out.

Planning transfers several weeks in advance is a fool's errand. Just leave youself enough flexibility in your team to be able to deal with whatever happens. Need some balance (players in different price ranges) in order to make single transfers and avoid the hits in jumping on or off of any bandwagons.

Are their world cup players still on leave? I'm starting to think that Schurrle could be a bargain at 7.5 if he gets regular starts - fans on a Chelsea forum seem to think he might start in a front 3 if JM reverts back to 4-3-3.

Should have just said RVP or Sturridge lol. RVP for me considering their easy fixtures and the fact that you don't have another United player.

I think I’ve found a 5man rotation up until GW23 that only uses up 1 transfer.
    Possible players: Cameron – Wisdom – O’Shea – Coloccini – Taylor = 22.0m
Stoke – West Brom – Sunderland – Newcastle – Swansea
After GW12 you transfer Stoke to West Ham and it gives the following:

    AST, SUN, wba
    BUR, ast/sou/hul
    CRY, WBA, swa/qpr
    LEI, EVE, sou
    HUL, SOU, qpr/bur
    NEW, BUR, SWA
    STO, NEW, sun/swa
    SWA, LEI, sou/sto
    CRY, LEI, sou
    WHM, lei, cry
    NEW, EVE, wba
    BUR, QPR, lei
    CRY, NEW, whm
    WHM, QPR, bur/wba
    SWA, hul, whm
    AST, WHM, sun
    SUN, LEI, qpr/new/hul
    HUL, AST, MCY/man
    EVE, sto, ast
    BUR, WBA, whm/qpr
    HUL, WHM, swa
    SOU, HUL, eve
    BUR, hul, sou
Only one standout difficult fixture and that is either MCY/man.
