Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

'...the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.'

It's strange how Tottenham see off Liverpool when Liverpool didn't even bid for the player. Especially when said player delayed agreeing to the Spurs move cos he was hoping Liverpool bid.

Every season the players that scored well in the previous season get a price hike that puts some people off. Some of those players deliver again, others flop. Only time will tell.

Out of those, Sturridge I am confident will deliver a 20+ goals season so he will probably be 'worth' the price, just because he will be a points scorer. Ramsey should also have a great season, assuming he stays injury free, though the midfield at Arsenal is yet to shape up so who knows. Yaya, well, who can predict that? I am personally staying clear just because I don't think his conversion rate from last year is sustainable (lol) and that an injury-free Aguero will take set pieces (lol).

Agree with Sturridge, I think he'll be leagues top scorer. Ramsey will possibly see his points spread out through the Arsenal team. Yaya could play in the hole with Aguero being injury prone

Yaya is awfully expensive, many think he won't hit the same heights as last year, and City have decidedly mixed fixtures to boot.

Some think Ramsey won't be bursting forwards quite so much with more attacking talent firing on all cylinders in front of him. Also not quite as much of a steal with other strong 9.0 options.

Sturridge is very expensive indeed, they have tough ish fixtures to kick things off and nobody knows quite how Liverpool will shape up and fare post-Suarez.

I feel Ramsey and Sturridge are priced about right. Decent options but alternatives exist in the same price bracket or as a way to use funds.

YYT feels about 1m over priced to me. I'm sure he will still score well but needs to score really well at that price.

If I got one of the three would be sturridge

Last chance to enter before it kicks off.

Hey guys, anybody fancy a preseason fantasy football game? I’m running a draft style fantasy game for the International Champions Cup.

For those who don’t know, it’s a friendly tournament going on in the US this year. Teams involved are:
    Real Madrid
    Man United
    Man City
    Liverpool
    AC Milan
    Inter Milan
    AS Roma
    Olympiacos

The tournament starts on the Thursday, so I’ll need you to be active enough to send me a forty man selection list before the first match, so that’s 1am Friday morning for the Brits.

They’ll be no budgets, and to keep it simple we’ll have five man squads, with no squad restrictions (so you can have five strikers if you want). Points will work the same as FPL, but with no bonus points or save points. If you’re interested, fill out this form:

    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_sCPWmXwHrI6oLx_665DUQ1DJs5p_5rT_KD8TZE9ifE/viewform?usp=send_form

Four spots left, first come first served. Fill out that form and I’ll email you the further details.

Need help prioritising funds in midfield or defence.

    A) Mata, with two 4.0 defenders on the bench
    B) Eriksen, upgrading one of those benchers to B. Davies

For the sake of clarity: in B, Davies wouldn't be benched, one of my other two 4.5 defenders would.

I'm not seeing a significant shift, a shift yes, in the overall points and maybe the defenders who may lose out due to the multiple 2/3 pt earners in low/no scoring games last season.

I must confess I'm basing it more on last years returns and assuming not too much will change with this year's changes.

If less defenders are going to be getting the bonus now it will make it even more important to have the right ones which means the cheaper alternative in each team defence is going to cost you even more points.

The lack of bonus for mids last year meant exp mids were an indulgent extravagance imo

I've taken broad a view of it and the main observation is that of defenders on the multiple bonus's given.
Got a bit of a fright when I read your comment as I'm stuck on a big4 midfield 3-5-2 format.

Mids didn't pick up much bonus last year unless scoring goals (sometimes even when scoring) and I don't see it being much different this year. I think all the value is up front and in defence. Could be wrong though and I'll look more closely before I pick my final team

Of course, but like the McD WC game, it does through up the odd surprise. CB's were the main winners last season but if there is a swing back to FB's then Clyne & chambers start picking the bps instead of Lovren & Fonte for example.

Yes there is that I guess. I do think the highest bps scorers are likely to be the highest priced defenders though. I've gone with vertonghen due to his extremely high bps from the season before last and fonte and lovren high bps last year too

Point is if you have money in defence you can swap to the bps darlings. If the bps switch to the mids this year then I may have to play my wc early though so thats the gamble

                      Spot on.
My defence is looking like 6m 5.5m 5m 5m 4.5m with a likelyhood of downgrading one if I need the cash but as always not looking to use a transfer on a defender unless absolutely necessary.
Vertonghen & maybe Walker look great value but Davies at 5m is hard to overlook. Any doubts about him then Vert it is.
Can't see past Debuchy or Shaw at the moment either.

I hate to do this because I know my team will be almost entirely different come August 16...

But could you gents please let me know if you see any glaring deficiencies?

    Begovic, Mannone
    Targett, Wisdom, Shaw, Davies, Duff
    Tadic, Ramsey, Fabregas, Nasri, Arnautovic
    Rooney, Bent, Sturridge

A few punts in there. Hopefully Duff is a starter for Burnley.

    Thoughts?

I like the Bego pick (I'm doubling with Krul)
Targett, Wisdom, Duff are doubtfuls for me at the moment and I'm unsure about Arnie.
Got to be better than Nasri & Bent.
I'm going without Sturridge to give me cash elsewhere but that will not be a popular call.

Wisdom is apparently meant to start at WBA. One of the better 4m options in defense, for sure.

Targett is definitely a major question mark right now but I believe SOT will give him a chance. Could be a bit of a bolter.

I think Arnie will do fine. Stoke have a nice bunch of fixtures out of the gate and oppositions will have to consider the likes of Krkic and Diouf now too. Even though I'm not sold on their FPL value, Arnie seems to be a good option for 6.5... then again, there's Valencia.

I've mocked up an absolutely bonkers midfield with Mata, Lallana, Yaya Toure, Sanchez, Fabregas but then my strike force degrades to Bent, Dzeko and Austin...

Not like it matter. A few more transfer will send me scrambling anyway.

A simply for the Sturridge/Remy comparison. Remy is more than likely going to be more of a winger, and if he isn't, then he's more than likely going to start most games on the bench.

In A, would Kane be permanently on the bench?

I don't really like either to be honest. A looks really good but I can't see Kane starting massive unsubstantiated punt in my opinion. In B, Remy will get rotated to hell at Liverpool, and I don't have much faith in Austin at all.

In both examples, Sturridge and Yaya are eating up the budgets and unbalancing the other options.

It really isn't worth punting on Tadic and Pelle as the first game is Liverpool away and if they do prove themselves then you can jump on the next 12 or so gameweeks of blue fixtures.

Also with Giroud being at the World Cup, and having less recovery time, I do have some doubt that he will replicate the good start he got off to last season with as we have seen how fatigue affects his form, just something to think about.
