Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

I was interested to see Van Gaal's 3-4-1-2 last night... Having seen the Dutch do it, I could see it suiting United:

    -----------------DDG-----------------
    ------Evans Jones Smalling-----
    Valencia Herrera Carrick Shaw
    -----------------Mata-----------------
    ---------Rooney--RVP-------------

When everyone is fit in Carrick's case. And you'd imagine a big name centre half would be signed.

In FPL terms though, it creates some interest:

    - Clean sheets - You'd expect United to be more solid if they can adapt. Also increases the value of the CBs with three potential positions.
    - Luke Shaw - It's hard to say who LVG would go with between Valencia/Rafael. I'd say Valencia is more his type of player (a bit like a Kuyt.. strong and physical). However, Shaw is nailed on and playing has a wing back has obvious benefits.
    - Juan Mata - A formation that allows Mata to play centrally can only be a good thing.
    - Wayne Rooney - RVP would be the main man in a 1-up-front, so if LVG plays two, Rooney will play a lot closer to goal.. and a lot closer to the points.
(- Plus Herrera was awesome by most accounts.)

    LVG quotes:
“I can play 4-3-3 with three strikers on the bench, but I want to play two strikers, so I have to work with the qualities I have. We have four No 10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes. As such, I have decided to play this system because of the quality of the players. But if we lose, I can change back to another system.”

he might... but only as back up I think. £30m on Shaw, you might as well play him, especially after letting Evra go for peanuts.

The 30m was for potential. I can't see him being able to play 45-50 games a season without a dip in form.

Jury's still out for me whether Shaw actually benefits from a wing back position. Logically he should, but he's been best when he's had space to run into, a lot like Bale at the start. He loses 20 yards in front of him by playing as a wing back.

I won't read too much into Rooney's 2 goals last night yet either, he was very quiet for 40 minutes and struggled to get into the game. He was basically a left forward and was restricted to that side, he wasn't massively threatening. I didn't like how Welbeck was restricted to the right side, and Rooney the left, there was no movement or swapping positions between them.

Yeah, I can see what you mean... you want him storming past a winger who's occupying the full back. And my point on Rooney wasn't really the goals.. just his potential position (i.e. not dropping deeper into midfield).

      I said I thought he'd play this formation a month ago 😉

It's why I favour Rooney and Mata over RVP. It's an adaptable formation that can be defensive or attacking, based on the fullbacks.

Watched the game earlier, wasn't really that impressed by Shaw to be honest, didn't beat his man once and tended to take the easy option at all times.
Rooney, Mata & Welbeck linked up well, Rooney and Welbeck alternating as to who comes deep/goes long, Herrera also joined the attack from midfield, him and Mata produced some tidy build up play too last night. Herrera was the most impressive of the bunch, a true box-to-box midfielder, I wouldn't select him from a fantasy perspective but he looks to add more than any of our midfielders did at any point last season.

      Also, goodbye Kagawa ðŸ™

Yeah, personally I think Welbeck plus one is the best for United. Rooney/RVP don't feel like a natural partnership, but Welbeck adds something different. Won't happen though!

And yeah, Herrera is probably just a PL plus, rather than an FPL one.

How do you feel about Hull defence this year?

I've not really looked into it in detail yet but I'm planning a big part of my budget for defence. My quick draft is

          Krul, mannone

Terry, cahil, vert, collocini (+0.5 spare)/huth, wisdom
          Sanchez, hazard, arnautovic, siggy, marney
          Giroud, dzeko, adebeyor

Lots of question marks of course but if rooney looks like nailing a forward spot I'll probably downgrade sanchez to rambo and upgrade ade to rooney.

Yeah defo but as I say this was a quick draft with shelvey instead of siggy but I don't see much point in going into too much detail at this stage.

I was under the impression that ade would be fine for the start of the season and if pochetino can keep him motivated then I think he'll be gold at that price.

If he doesn't look nailed he won't be in the team though as I don't like rotation risks in my gw1 team. I want to ensure any transfers I make are desired not required.

Who would downgrade out of these 6 to afford a better defence:

Eriksen, Hazard, Ramsey, RvP, Dzeko, Giroud

Bear in mind that I like RvP as a differential to the majority of people on here that are going with Rooney instead and also I like having him because it gives you some money to play with during the season if you do end up trading him out.

problem with forwards is that imo there's no obvious choice under 8.5
so where u can look to downgrade is MF.
I only have Erik out of those 3 of yours, so I'm a bit biased as he's one of my favs.
therefore looking at the other 2 to downgrade.
my choice would be de jong if forced to do it.
but other options as well. tadic, arnie. cabella, gouffran, mirallas.
schurrle would be great if he can get a regular spot. haz > schurrle and save 2.5

Horrible strike force (but realise they rotate and hull have a great start), amazing midfield, don't love the defence, but it's good.

if Everton don't pick a striker up (even on loan) then Naismith is a gem tbf too

I think the defense is solid, just would have preferred Cahill to Luis..also OShea is interchangeable with any 4.5m I like at the time

        or

i think b makes more sense. thoughts?

        Kieren Trippier:
Burnley right-back; 14 assists in the Championship last season, eyed by Southampton and Newcastle, even linked to Arsenal in some perhaps fanciful reports. Extremely motivated and ambitious, and technically excellent. For me, he's nailed on, yet I seem to be the only one here... any other takers?
