Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson strengthened his attacking options for the season ahead last week by snapping up Argentine forward Leonardo Ulloa for a club record £8 million. The 28-year-old arrives from Brighton and Hove Albion on a four-year deal and is The Foxes fifth signing of the summer, following Marc Albrighton, Jack Barmby, Ben Hamer and Matthew Upson to the King Power stadium.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Pearson revealed the South American was one of the Championship winners’ key targets after a couple of impressive campaigns with The Seagulls:

“We identified Leo as a player that could help us move forward quite some time ago. He complements the forwards we already have very well and his attributes broaden the options available to us, which will be important this season. I’m delighted we’ve been able to add him to the squad. He has adapted extremely well to the English game in a relatively short period of time and I’m sure he will have a great deal to offer us in the Premier League.”

The History

Ulloa’s career kicked off back in 2002 in his native Argentina with second division Comisión de Actividades Infantiles Comodoro Rivadavia. Struggling to earn a regular role, he managed just one goal from seven appearances before making his way to San Lorenzo, where he produced three goals in 32 matches in the Argentine top flight.

The six-foot-three forward had brief spells with Arsenal Sarandi (three goals from 12 appearances) and Olimpo (14 league games produced three strikes and an assist) before he was acquired by Spanish Second Division outfit Castellon in the summer of 2008. Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Ulloa served up 30 goals in 79 appearances for the lower league side and persuaded La Liga club Almeria to shell out for his services.

Despite scoring seven times in his debut season in the Spanish top-flight, Ulloa was unable to prevent his new side from relegation. Over the subsequent season-and-a-half, he delivered 32 goals and a single assist in 56 appearances before Brighton snapped him up in January 2013. The Argentine needed no time to adapt to his new surrounds, though, and proceeded to deliver 26 goals and eight assists in 58 matches across all competitions for the Championship outfit before Pearson came calling.

The Prospects

As our resident Leicester fan, Andy, discussed in an earlier article on Leicester’s prospects, Pearson predominantly rolled out a 4-4-2 formation in last year’s successful promotion push, with a very occasional switch to 3-5-2. A two-man frontline looks on the cards, then, and given the significant outlay, it seems more than likely that Ulloa’s imposing figure will partner David Nugent up top from the off.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Ulloa reckons his physique makes him an ideal asset for the English top-flight:

“It was my father that said he wanted me to play in the Premier League because my body is made for England. I’ve enjoyed my time in England. It’s been a year and a half now. It’s a different kind of football, English football is intense and strong, but it’s good and I feel good when I’m on the pitch. I enjoy it all the time. I’m more excited than I was to be playing in La Liga, because I think the Premier League is number one. I want to play for Leicester and I know they are a really good team. Last season they played really well and I think it’s a really good club. They have a good team and it’s great for them to be in the Premier League after a long time out.”

While a price of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is budget-friendly, Ulloa may well be overlooked by Fantasy managers, given that Nugent is available for an identical price and also boasts spot-kick duties for Pearson’s side. Nugent amassed 20 goals and 12 assists in the promotion campaign, compared to the new boy’s 14 goals and four assists for Brighton, suggesting that he could provide better value.

Even so, Pearson’s acquisition of winger Marc Albrighton may prove beneficial to the Argentine. The former Villa man will be tasked with delivering plenty of crosses from the flank, with Ulloa’s aerial ability potentially playing a prominent role in Leicester’s attacking forays.

Looking at the season ticker, though, it’s fair to say that few will be willing to splash out on Pearson’s weapons from the offset. With showdowns against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United supplemented by trips to Stoke and Palace in the first six Gameweeks, the Championship winners have one of the toughest opening schedules around. Steering clear looks the safest option to begin with, then, affording us time to assess whether Ulloa is capable of usurping Nugent as a Fantasy option when the fixtures take a turn for the better around Gameweek 7.

    Thoughts on the below team?

    Begovic (Green)

Debuchy / Shaw (rotate one of Coloccini / Rosenior / Vlaar)

Mata / Sanchez / Siggy / Eriksen (Davis)

    Rooney / Dzeko / Ings

2.0 mil in bank so that I can transfer in any player who excels in first week or two without having to sell someone I don’t want to.

I would do: dzeko -> aguero // eriksen -> 4.5/5mil if aguero plays in community shield.

    Thoughts?

Not sure Stoke are good for clean sheets anymore, although I do have a lot of love for Begovic.
Perhaps upgrade Begovic to Courtois for Chelsea coverage and if you still want that 2.0m change then get the 1.0m rise from downgrading Davis and Colo/Ros

lost at the bottom of the previous page:

Feedback from here and some own thoughts ended up with the following:

    Foster / Krul

J.Enrique, Evans, N.Taylor, Ferdinand, Targett ( those 5 rotate VERY well until week 9)

Fabregas, Mata, Ramsey, Siggy, Eriksen or Lamela

    Rooney, Diego Costa, Bojan

    please some thoughts ?

    thanks

Wow, I assume you would play a 3-5-2 msot weeks then?
IMO Caulker is worth the 0.5 extra
Bojan is neither prolific, consistant or quite frankly very good so if you're looking for a cheap FW Weimann is better at 5.5 but if you can find another 0.5 it would allow you to mix between Long, Ings, Austin, Wickham and Ideye which are much better strikers.

yes for a start and then when giroud/dzeko have better fixtures I would remove one of the mids (probably the spurs one) and get a 5ish mid

bojan is for siggy rotation and nice opening fixtures

I am considering caulker to be honest

No problem. If you are unsure about Giroud's fixtures are you saying ramsey is fixtureproof? If not then perhaps change Ramsey to a cheap mid and upgrade Bojan to bony, then do your Tott mid to Ramsey and Bony to Giroud later on? if you can afford, of course

      B
Luis and Hazard should be consistent points.
Davies could be underwhelming fantasy-wise with few attacking points and a few clean sheets - depends how Pochettino sets them up - if he can get a good balance then Davies could benefit at both ends. if he goes all out attack then they won't get many cleanies but Davies could get the odd assist or goal.
Sterling at 8.5 seems too expensive and may get rotated a lot this season. Could be a good choice to begin with, then when Walcott is back and price dropped, you may be able to do a straight swap.
Dzeko annoys me whenever I have in my fantasy team so I would never recommend him. Jovetic is probably as good a pick this season.
It seems Remy wants to leave QPR and QPR are happy to sell so despite the Liverpool deal collapsing I'd still be surprised if he stayed - which makes Austin a good pick.

I really don't know who to go with in the 4.5 bracket. I was going with a Siggy / Sidwell rotation, but looking at Swansea's fixtures I really don't think I would be playing Sidwell much anyway. No point money being on the bench so am looking for a decent 4.5 option. Not sure though. The 4.5 options are largely unknown to me

    De gea, Myhill
Shaw, Filipe Luis, Davis, Moore, Vlaar
    Silva, Hazard, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Albrighton
    Rooney, Sturridge, Weimann

    I’ll be playing a 3-4-3 formation.

I've been thinking of making some adjustments as i have 0.5mill remaining,
Lamela for Eriksen (depending on who will being playing behind the striker)
Silva for nasri (i will keep nasri if he gets game time)
I am not sure who too have as a third striker for weimann or whether too keep him

      Don't think there are any.

There are a couple of nailed-ons who will get you 2 points every week and a couple who are far from nailed-on but if they play have more attacking potential.

Marney or Albrighton I guess. Wouldn't touch either though.

    bony - remy

is it worth it to spend the extra 1.0 for Bony over Remy? Rey was better last yr (yes better team in new than qpr) but Bony was not in form most of last yr except some short periods of time. Also remy is good forward, albeit a headcase. If to go w/ Remy, that extra 1.0 could be used to upgrade defence.

Fixtures ain't so great but you can always bench him for another defender. I am keeping him because his price could move up quickly at the start and Arsenal has a good chance of keeping a cleanie against CRY

    best def:
1--FLuis - BDavies - X (rotate btn hopefully one of these being nailed: Upson - Bruce - Targett)

wouldn't go anywhere near option 1. Very likely you'll end up with 2 defenders every week - possibly even 0 if Luis or Davies gets benched for Azpi and Rose for the odd game.

Had Ramsey since I registered but just changed to Sanchez in the last 2 days. Think I'm going to punt with him to start with then go from there. Be nice to downgrade to ramsey and use the 1.5m elsewhere in GW 1 or 2

Your team is good but you lack of United and Arsenal defenders. I think CRY has more clean sheet potential than Stoke for exemple so not sure about Huth (he has been sidelined a long time).
The problem of not owning Sanchez is that he is the highest owned player at the moment. If he starts with a flyer, I will be in trouble 🙂

you wonder if southampton have gone about things the wrong way. by selling so many players in a row without bringing anyone in inbetween they now are in the situation where everyone knows they're sitting on a war chest and will charge more

How are owners rotating Krul and Mannone. Will you be choosing for clean sheets or save points? In week one Krul will be busy, maybe 4 pts. Mannone not so much. He could get 6pts, I think 2 is more likely.

right now I have Targett and Baird who I'm not entirely happy about so I'm monitoring..but upgrading Austin to Enner has made me need to find another available 1m..it's also contingent on Verm -> United

I'm considering no United defense and just getting DDG, this is where I am atm (but it's every changing!):

        Mannone - Krul
        Luis - Verm - Davies - Targett - Baird
        Sanchez - Haz - Mata - Eriksen - Wanyama
        Rooney - Dzeko - Enner

also looking at Cameron and Rio

        how's yours?

Looks quite tidy but yea, not sure about Targett. Well if Verm doesn't happen then he's still a placeholder for 5.0 anyway.

          Have a template 3-4-3 draft and a tempting 3-5-2

          3-4-3
          Krul Foster
          Luis Ward Rosenior 4.0 4.0
          Sanchez Haz Mata Siggurdson 4.5
          Rooney Dzeko Giroud

          3-5-2
          Krul 4.0
          Luis Ward Rosenior 4.0 4.0
Sanchez Haz Mata [Sterling/Eriksen] Siggurdson 4.5
          Rooney Dzeko [Naismith/Weimann]

Just don't know how big to go in defence!!

if Everton don't buy a striker before the window I think I'll definitely get Naismith

same. If Naismith if my 3rd striker, I'm just really tempted to go big on a 5th mid (Sterling, Coutinho, Eriksen or Lamela) but yea...you reckon that defence is too weak mate?

will Ros start? I think there's a lot of value in expensive defense this season but it's hard to balance with the strikers as there's also some decent value in mid.

it's hard to pick between Rambo/Sanchez and Cesc/Haz..the former could go off in both matchups just as easily as the latter..but the money difference is huge

hopeful he starts, but it's either him Chester or Figueroa, just want a Hull defender - whichever is fine. Will probbaly know by GW1

I think there's value as well, but just hard to sacrifice midfielders...but yea the extra 2.5 from going Ramsey/Fabregas over Sanchez/Hazard is HUGE.

not to mention that now Sturridge is now tempting as well

Kone most likely to get the nod in that case, then Mirallas THEN Naismith

Naismith got the nod on plenty of occasions even when they still had Lukaku..I'm confident Martinez is paying attention..Mirallas will play mid and Kone hasn't even played a minute (that I'm aware of)

    with the new bonus system

    a) which kind of players are to benefit the most?

    b) do u think cheaper keepers would be a better choice as they would get more save points than premium keepers?

    thanks
