Bojan Krkic nets his first goal for Stoke in a narrow loss at Schalke. Bafetimbi Gomis gets off the mark at new club Swansea, Luke Shaw is dropped due to fitness concerns as United play out a goalless draw against Inter Milan, whilst Glenn Murray notches his fourth goal of the summer for Palace:

Bojan Strikes for Stoke
The Potters’ tour of Germany ended in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Schalke last night. In his second appearance for Mark Hughes’ side, the summer signing from Barcelona hit the headlines with a superbly taken goal and, according to the match report, turned in a highly impressive display from a spot on the right of a 4-2-3-1. Having made his debut in the role in “the hole” last weekend, it remains to be seen where Bojan’s likely role will be – Peter Odemwingie has yet to return to action after playing for Nigeria in the World Cup and could well take up the wide role again, though, allowing the Spaniard a central berth behind the lone striker.

Marko Arnautovic missed a spot-kick for the Potters, with both Charlie Adam and Jon Walters off the pitch – although question marks remain over the overall penalty pecking order, it remains to be seen whether Adam or Walters will earn a place in Hughes’ starting XI for the season ahead, potentially boosting the Austrian’s chances of retaining duties in spite of last night’s miss.

In terms of personnel, Steve Sidwell, Walters, Phil Bardsley and Andy Wilkinson missed out with minor injuries, whilst, like Odemwingie, Geoff Cameron has yet to feature after playing for his country in Brazil 2014.

United Held By Inter
Louis Van Gaal’s side played out a goalless draw against Italian outfit Inter Milan last night. Once again, the Dutchman continued with his 3-4-1-2 formation and fielded Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling as his three centre-backs, though after the game, he admitted he is still looking to strengthen at the back:

“The first match was zero goals, the second match was a fantastic goal by Pjanic, an error from the goalkeeper and a penalty given by the referee, and today again zero goals. So we are doing well but we are looking for defenders, because a lot of defenders have gone. We have to replace them but I like also like Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett.”

After criticizing Luke Shaw’s fitness levels the day before, Van Gaal benched the former Southampton man, and with Rafael currently sidelined due to a groin problem, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia got the nod at wing-back. Shaw was utilised as a second-half sub in the goalless outing and, as his manager explained:

”Luke is working very hard and he was lucky because normally I would have played Reece James, but he was a little bit injured. And so I asked him in spite of a very heavy training session this morning and I think he did very well.”

Speaking on his fitness after the game, Shaw – the most popular defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with over 30% ownership – concurred with the Dutchman’s assessment as he looks to step up his fitness ahead of the season opener against Swansea in 17 days’ time:

“It’s something I totally agree with. To play in this formation you have to be really fit. I am fit but I am not at the high level he demands. I have got to get fitter to get up and down (the wing). It’s something I have got to work on…I didn’t come into United thinking it would be much harder. That’s something that I think I made a mistake on…I want and need the staff to push me on so they can do what they want. It will only help me in the long run. I wasn’t meant to play (against Inter) so I trained on Tuesday morning. Me and the staff decided it would be better to push me in a harder training session. But I came on and played 45 minutes. I felt great. I could have played another 45 so that’s something that shows there is a progression there after the last game. The focus is now to get fitter and fitter and to be flying by start of season.”

Gomis Opens Swans Account
The Frenchman was amongst the goals as Swansea ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Exeter. Handing a starting role up front, Gomis headed home a Neil Taylor cross for the opener and also hit the woodwork before substitute Wilfried Bony – in his first appearance of the summer – teed up Josh Sheehan for the second. Garry Monk handed 21 players game time, giving Gylfi Sigurdsson the night off after his weekend double at Plymouth, and post-match, the Swans boss admitted he was still far from certain over his starting XI for the upcoming campaign:

“Pre-season is about building fitness and working on a few different things that we’ve been trying. So now is a good time to implement that and that’s what we’ve been doing in the games so far. There are improvements to be made, fitness and sharpness to come, while we are tweaking things in terms of positions and personnel which will be the case until the start of the season. We are trying a number of partnerships all over the pitch. We use these games to work on different things and see what works and what doesn’t, so it was a good exercise for us.”

Jutkiewicz Nets in Clarets Loss
With just over a couple of weeks until the season gets underway, Sean Dyche seems to be settling on a starting XI. The Burnley boss made just two substitutions over the entire 90 minutes of a 2-1 defeat at local rivals Preston, with the likes of new boys Matt Taylor and Lukas Jutkiewicz handed starting berths – the latter grabbed The Clarets’ only goal to take his tally to three for the summer and strengthen his hopes of a regular role until Sam Vokes recovers from a knee ligament injury. At the back, Michael Duff (4.0) in FPL, lined up alongside Jason Shackel, Kieran Trippier and Ben Mee to remain on Fantasy radars as a potential budget defensive option.

R’s Midfielders in the Goals
Harry Redknapp’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by Leyton Orient last night. Junior Hoilett and Joey Barton grabbed the goals for the Premier League outfit, who once again lined up with a three-man defence, with Danny Simpson and Armand Traore fielded as wing-backs. At 4.5 in FPL, Simpson may well afford us an out-of-position option if Redknapp continues with the same formation, whilst Traore could offer an alternative 4.5-priced midfield differential in the budget bracket – he’s owned by 0.6% of FPL managers compared to the similarly priced Marc Albrighton, who currently sits in 12% of squads. As many as nine players were afforded 90 minutes apiece but with a friendly against Southend this evening, Redknapp rested the likes of Rio Ferdinand in order to cope with the busy schedule.

Mandron Fires Black Cats to Victory
With a game against Nacional on their schedule this evening, Gus Poyet fielded many of Sunderland’s Under-21 side for a 1-0 win over Portuguese side Recreativo last night. The Black Cats boss handed the likes of Liam Bridcutt, Alfred N’Diaye, Valentin Roberge and El Hadji Ba roles as second-half subs as Michael Mandron grabbed the only goal, though little can be gauged from such an experimental line-up.

Murray Nets Again for Eagles
The Palace forward was forced to play as a makeshift centre-half in Monday night’s 3-0 win over US side Richmond Kickers after four defensive team-mates were sidelined with “niggles”, according to Tony Pulis. Sidelined for most of last season through injury, Murray still found time to net his fourth goal of the pre-season – more than any other player so far – to underline his flourishing form ahead of the new campaign and potentially bring him onto Fantasy radars as a budget forward option. Peter Ramage and Marouane Chamakh were also in the goals in a game that saw Pulis omit Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney and Paddy McCarthy from the squad as a precautionary measure. This allowed Adrian Mariappa his first start for three matches at right-back, whilst Jerome Williams was once again selected on the left of defence – he has now started all four of Palace’s pre-season friendlies this summer, but has yet to be listed in Fantasy games thus far.

    Better:

    A) Debuchy, Cahill, Bavies, Vlaar, WIsdom.

    or

    B) Ward, Cahill, Caulker, Bavies, Wisdom (don't know how to lineup the defence then)

    The budget strikers eh?

My teams have so far revolved around 2 concepts. Bigger hitter strike force (currently Giroud / Rooney / Sturridge) and a 2 good - 1 budget strike force (i.e. swapping out Giroud for a £5.5m - Bojan / Nugent etcs).

Does anybody else dabble with the 1 cheap striker option? It enables a much more balanced midfield and defence, but potentially at the loss of loads of goals.

Is there is a history of a cheap £5.5m forward ever banging in the points?

There have been a few really cheap strikers to do the business, Andy Carroll was one of the best, only 6.0 or something and scored a TRUCK load for Newcastle.

Then there's always JRod last year for Saints..

Ulloa could prove good value this year, I think I'm just getting a 4.5 and letting them rot now though, I was on Ulloa earlier.

No he won't, he's already one of the highest owned players, a lot easier for him to drop in price than it is to amass another 10% of his already substantial ownership imo, unless he goes crazy, but then I'll get him in straight away.

you only need to amass "60,000" to go up though.

I've decided on a compromise. By having a 4.5 / 4 GK (which I hate) Ive got a strikeforce of

Mata / Sterling / Silva / Fab (Marney)
      Grude / Bony / Sturridge

I was aiming for 3 united players but for their start but I'm getting a feeling they wont find it as easy as it looks on paper.

I was just trying to look at the squad a completely different way to the norm. I've made loads of the standard 2 premium, 1 mid, 2 budget (that rotate) defences and moved that in to Midfield too.

Having players from only United, City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs would surely generate points?

The only worries are Szczesny dropped for Ospina. Barkley's rotation and Naismith's game time if Everton get Lukaku again.

That's actually a really nice team for something so different to most on here.. As above, the GK pair needs to be downgraded, use the cash to upgrade one of Henderson or Naismith maybe?

I'd downgrade Szczesny to some bench fodder that won't play, just play DDG every match.

Myhill would be an ideal replacement for Szcesny.. very cheap and a good bench warmer with the likes of DDG in goals and will give good money to upgrade Henderson and Naismith

Cheers. I think I'm guaranteed a solid points score every week with a team like this! Henderson is unspectacular but he's pretty much guaranteed 110 points + for a £6.0m outlay.

Naismith should be a bargain if Everton don't bring in a striker but I can't really see who I would swap these two for when downgrading Szczesny. It's only going to bring me £1-1.5m and Sterling, Lallana, Gerrard are £8.5m +

      Update to this;

Noticed I had double United and Arsenal in GK/Defence so swapped Szczesny for Hart and Jones for Ben Davies.

Can rotate my GK's and defenders properly this way.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

There is bundles of value in defenders this season. It's a fair assumption that Mourinho's second campaign could bring an increase in clean sheets for Chelsea. Arsenal and Spurs have their nuggets on offer and let's not forget Everton' marauding full backs who out scored all but four of the midfielders last season.
On that basis, is anyone brave enough to go for a five man defence? Bonkers or brilliance? You decide.

Don't all laugh at once 😀

I'm pretty set on having Shaw/Chester/Pieters/Debuchy/Ward.

Whist I won't be playing 5 at the back, these 5 do rotate well as a 4-man defence for the first 5 gameweeks. It isn't very long-term I know, but if they work well together it could give me just the start I need.

There's one less attacking slot up front, but there's more money available per remaining attacking slot.

I've seen a couple of RMT's with a 5 man DF. But it's not for me.

Every single season the top scoring players are strikers (Suarez, RVP, Aguero etc...). The next best scorers are always MFers.

So why would anyone go 5 at the back and lose so many spots in your team that could be filled with players who have a much higher ceiling for points potential.

One thing that is worth mentioning though, is that last season it perhaps wasnt a terrible option, as CB's were hoovering up bonus points in tight games and teams like CPL, Sunderland & Southampton were serving up plenty of cleanies and their players were reasonably priced. This season the boners are different and we are not sure which teams will be solid again.

      So in a word: NO!

Probably an idea better experimented with in the second half of the season when defences start to tighten up. Early on there tends to be a lot of goals.

Theoretically, a larger number of defenders represent good value over the season than any other position. But this position also has more than it's fair share of poor value players. I think we need to look at it historically which shows that the vast majority of the players in the top 10k don't play 5 at the back - I think this is the most telling statistic.

You could be right - but it could just be down to the popularity of more attacking formations. People like to pick attackers, it's exciting. I'm willing to bet there are just as many 3-4-3 teams propping up the bottom of the overall league every season.

Last summer, I said I was toying with a 5 man defence thanks to the new baps system and it wasn't a popular suggestion. Wish I'd stuck with it though, for the first few months of the season it would have been fantastic.

Not so sure of it this season, but I learned a lesson about not following my instinct for fear of being left behind.

don't want to mis-interpret you here as you may just be referring to any 5 defenders as opposed to 5 more expensive defenders. but i'll make a point on the latter from last season. it wasn't a case of planning or trying to play a back 5, it was having 5 great ones to choose from. this often meant paying for 4 big defenders. also not being scared to bench a 6mil defender (benching a 6mil mid is nothing, so why is a defender a big deal). this meant whether it ended up being a back 3, 4 or full 5 that gameweek (fixtures) i was fully expecting clean sheets rather than just hoping for them. given the baps this was almost like expecting 7-9 points from each defender, then hoping for attacking points as a bonus. before i'd always hope for a clean sheet from my 4.5mil man, that was always seen as the bonus

Yeah, last summer I didn't find the midfielders appealing so it would have been a case of putting money in the defence and probably playing 5 most weeks.

Interesting. I've been playing around with and it doesn't seem too bad at all, as long as you still have good captaincy options most weeks. The problem with this is you can only afford a couple of premium options in attack/midfield and you would end up using most of your transfers going from one captain to the next (if you place a high weight on fixtures as I do). Transfers, I feel, are very valuable at the beginning of the game and I think it's a good idea to save them to enable you to jump on the really form players.

I've just been looking at an expensive defence of: Terry, Baines, Jones, Vertonghen and Coloccini, which doesn't look too bad at all. I could replace Coloccini with Jagielka but the team I was looking at needed the extra cash to enable the best captain options.

3-4-3 and 3-5-2 are the most popular formations, and they are usually the ideal formations if you can afford them.

We don't have an unlimited budget to start with though, we have not yet increased our team value, and we haven't yet identified the new bargains and improvers, so we have to make compromises.

Also, top defenders often provide greater value for money and are more affordable than most midfielders and forwards, especially after the introduction of the new BPS system last season.

It is therefore not completely ridiculous to consider starting the season with 4 or even 5 good defenders in the starting eleven (which might still leave enough in the budget for up to 5 other big-hitters including captain choices in the squad as well), and to change formation to increase the number of midfielders and forwards in the starting eleven a few game-weeks later.

Time will tell whether ideas like this are madness or genius, but I think The Light Knight tried something similar last season with a certain amount of success. IMO the idea is worth considering.

I am considering going with no Arsenal cover til at least GW4 - yes... Sanchez "may" explode but look at their fixtures:

CPL - a team that the best clubs found hard to break down. Arsenal didn't look like opening them up last season and I'm expecting them to be very resilient come opening day

eve - 1 goal across the 2 games last season, at Goodison... not expecting much from any of them

lei - this is the one they could all explode in

MCI - City aren't fantastic defensively away from home but still wouldn't be confident of any player doing well.

I hope this is logical and that I haven't spun a whole bunch of crap just to free up cash for other stuff i want to do 😀
