West Ham made their fifth signing of the summer earlier this week by acquiring frontman Enner Valencia from Mexican side Pachuca. The Ecuador international has been granted a work permit by the FA and arrives at Upton Park on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be in the region of £12m:

The Hammers fought off a number of suitors to land their new striker, who came to prominence with a series of impressive displays in the recent World Cup. Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old reckons his summer exploits for Ecuador will stand him in good stead in his new surroundings:

“The World Cup was a good tournament for me personally, I scored three times and for my first World Cup it was a good experience, but I hope my next one is better for me and the team. Of course, the World Cup gives me confidence to come to Europe and I want to take and advance with this opportunity that West Ham have given to me. For me, scoring against England, one of the big teams in the world, before the World Cup was important for me. Hopefully I can score again against those defenders! I scored many goals as a striker. I’m fast, and I try to continue like that because I know the goals brought me to West Ham.”

The History

A product of the Caribe Junior youth system is his native Ecuador, Valencia joined Emelec on a free transfer in 2008. Initially starting his career as a winger, he failed to feature in the first-team until the arrival of current Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli in 2010 and once installed as a regular up front, quickly demonstrated his goal-getting abilities – over 117 appearances, he notched 23 times and also supplied 21 assists across all competitions and helped his side win the league in 2012/13.

Signed by Mexican outfit Pachuca in January this year, Valencia wasted no time in delivering the goals. In 23 appearances for his new club, he netted 18 times and also chipped in with a pair of assists, with his exploits winning Valencia the Golden Boot for finishing the season as top scorer in Mexico’s Premier League.

On the international stage, Valencia has featured for his country on 13 occasions and found the net seven times – impressively, the Hammers new boy has scored six times in his last six matches for Ecuador and grabbed three goals in the recent Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Valencia’s flourishing form should give Allardyce’s side a real shot in the arm as they attempt to improve upon a series of poor displays over the summer so far. The Hammers are looking to play a more expansive style of football in the season ahead but, after seeing his side draw two and lose two of their opening four friendlies, their manager admitted it’ll take some time before the players become accustomed to a new approach.

With club record signing Andy Carroll set to be sidelined for four months due to ankle ligament damage, Valencia looks poised to partner fellow new boy Mauro Zarate up top. Having racked up 18 goals for Velez Sarsfeld last season, the Argentine also arrives on the back of some impressive showings and has already grabbed his first goal for the club during pre-season – Zarate’s craft and guile, allied with Valencia’s agility and excellent aerial prowess will certainly afford the London club a new look up top for the upcoming campaign.

As mentioned, though, it remains to be seen just how quickly Allardyce can translate this new offensive style of play into Fantasy returns. Certainly, with just 40 goals to their name last term, West Ham did little to justify our Fantasy interest up front and it may well be that most would-be suitors will resist initial investment until the results start to improve.

Available for 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia’s appeal in the former game is dented by Zarate’s 6.5 price tag, given that the Argentine is potentially lined up for a share of dead-ball duties.

A mixed opening schedule is also likely to prove a deterrent. The season opener against Spurs is followed by trips to Palace and Hull in the following three and with Liverpool, United and City also on the agenda by Gameweek 9, Valencia looks one to monitor for now. If he can adjust quickly and replicate his international form in the English top-flight, though, the Ecuadorian may yet force his way into our Fantasy plans.

OK based upon all his taime at Palace. He averages 0.39 goals per game in a lower league. Austin also in the championship last year was 0.54 per game. Ideye was at a closer to equivalent league and has 0.44 per game. So both should be better options than Murray

Ok, you can do the average, but in his last season, the one I find the most relevant, he was top scorer.
              http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/championship/2012-13/top-goal-scorers.html

Murray should be completely nailed. Before he got injured he was their big star.

I don't know tbh... but saying "Murray should be completely nailed. Before he got injured he was their big star." ... is clearly a bit misleading.

They were playing in a different division under a completely different management team then.

I decided to go with none of them to be honest. But that was my conclusion at the time. I fancy Ideye to do the best.OK his fixtures are more appealing but all these options are a punt at the end of the day as they are new to the league

    Opinions on my team if you would be so kind;

    Krul - Foster

Caulker - Vlaar - Ben Davies (O'Shea and Liam Moore)

    Mata - Lamela - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Sanchez

    Rooney - Dzeko (Bojan)

Going with a 3 - 5 - 2 as I think all 5 midfield players will be nailed on to start every week, and will also be high point scorers.

The strikers are too much of a rotation risk for me, unless you go for the big three - RVP - Costa - Sturridge you are not guaranteed starters. I'm concerned about Dzeko with Jovetic finding some preseason form.

I know the defence is weak, but I should have 3 starters every week, and there are plenty of options at 4.5m to be able to rotate.

Does anyone with inside knowledge of Leicester have any idea if Liam Moore will start this season?

I like it, I am thinking of going 3-5-2 myself. I am not sure about Lamela. I know Spurs have a decent start and he might be playing in the hole but I think it just seems to be a bit of a punt. Perhaps downgrade him to upgrade Dzeko if you are worried? Or at least to have money in the bank to upgrade Dzeko once Aguero is back fit. Or alternatively, to invest in a Chelsea defender (it will give you more balance)

I have a good feeling about Lamela this year, think he will be the main man under Pochettino. I want to keep the 5 in midfield as the core of the team.

I am tore on Dzeko, need to monitor Man City in pre-season closely to see who is going to start, I would consider downgrading him to maybe Pelle, or Remy?

I'm not worried about having expensive defenders, last season I had Ivanovic, Kompany and Vidic - benched Dann and Baker - and the latter two offered a far better return for value.

Cheers, I think Moore has a great future, but I understand he fell out of favour after starting the season really well last year.

He's played in every pre-season game at some point so far, at 4mil he could be a great option.

I saw a comment from another Leicester fan on here yesterday saying he was one of Pearsons favourites, and was a likely starter.

Couple of slightly iffy fixtures in the first 3, but I think it's price plus uncertainty about Liverpool sans Suarez. Sturridge did well without Suarez at the start of last season but those games were really tight - I think there were several narrow 1-0 victories before Suarez came back and they started blowing teams away.

Plus Rooney and Costa look marginally better and it's too much to have all three.

        1) Initially I was looking to double up on Chelsea at the back, but it seems there is far too much uncertainty on how they will line up. I have opted for Azpi on the fact that Jose seemed to prefer him last season. Can easily change Kosc > Debuchy and Azpi>Cahill to be safe for the start of the season I suppose.

        2) Very true. The price you pay for a better attack and more reliable captain choices I suppose.

      GK: good

DEF: Azpi not nailed, but may be ok. The rest are solid. Maybe a 4.0 for Vlaar

      MID: Strong,

      ATT: Fine.

You will be playing either a 4.5 defender of Long / Marney each week. May be a good idea to find a way to get a better mid / forward to play week in week out

        Thanks Badger!

Worth downgrading Krul and running the risk of 1 playing keeper? I did this last season with Howard for a while and it wasn't fun!

Chester set to start yeah? Surely there are no 4.0 who will start?

Midfield is fairly balanced I feel. Silva can be switched to any other 9.0 obviously.

Not so happy with Long but I'm not convinced by the 8.5's yet other than Giroud.

Yeah I dunno Dalet. I would hate to stuff your team.

          You could go:

          Krul to 4.0
Vlaar to 4.0 (one will have to show up)
          Arnau to Siggy
          Kosc to debuchy

and us the 2.0 to go Long to Jovetic if he looks like starting

For a stoke defender I would pick Bego or Pieters.

Let me know when you find those 2x 4.0 defenders!

Yeh finding them is a pain. I'd imagine there's a Leicester and burnley 4m but not sure which. Wisdom won't be nailed I don't think

Has anyone done an historic comparison between say a premium defender+bench fodder vs a 4.5 or 5m rotation pair? If not, I'd be happy to put something together assuming someone has the historic GW info.

That's what I struggle with each year. Baines is unliked at 7, but he always returns better than 20/1 pts/cost.

Who returns that well at lower prices in order to use the money for offense?

Decent 6-7m defenders get say 4.5.5-5 PPG throughout the season. To have midfielders scoring that you need to spend 7.5-8.5m or so.

As long as you have a couple of strong captaincy options each week it clearly makes sense to spend more on that defence UNLESS rotation really does turn 9.5m of cheap defenders into the equivalent of 10.5m premium+bench.

I desperately want to see some kind of historics on this.

I struggle with this one every season. It always seems logical that there is more value and predictability to the defenders. However when you look at the Top 1000 players hardly any of them play with 5 at the back, and most of them with three. It's very confusing.

I would maybe downgrade terry to either luis or jones/Evans. I would then upgrade tadic or de Jong to sterling maybe or mata or Ramsey if you have the funds. I would also decide on a formation you want to play wither 352 or 343. You have too much money spent on bench players, either get rid of tadic de Jong or Siggy and replace with a 4.5 then upgrade elsewhere eg giroud, you could also downgrade giroud and then upgrade the midfield. I would maybe try and put in either sanchez, mata or sterling into your team

I looked at his stats on wiki and they were muck. In saying that though he is a nailed on starter in his favoured postion behind the striker or at the very least on the wing,

The real plus point is that he rotates well with any swansea player (saves the headaches of knowing when to play the likes of weiman instead).
