634x258 Great Expectations

After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

I'll probably get ripped into for this. But I absolutely do not want him this season if he's going to cost £30m or more. We still haven't seen Rafael try to play RWB, and so far Young has been doing a pretty darn good job. Valencia is pretty rubbish imo but I'd much rather upgrade our CM options than upgrade Valencia for £30m.

Valencia is stronger than Young defensively, but I think he's become an awful attacker. Almost always squares up to the oppositions's LB and just kicks the ball AT them (rather than past them).

Doesn't matter, I'd prefer to have another CM superstar in the making like Strootman - 2 years younger than Cuadrado and would cost less probably.

You shouldn't get ripped for that mate, although I disagree about Valencia, think he is a good player.

Only reason I could see us moving for Cuadrado is either to change formation (which seems odd) or to play him up top as he did with Robben in world cup. I think the worry about a front 3 of mata, roon and rvp is the massive lack of pace.

As far as spending the money on more important matters I couldn't agree more! We need a cb and cm and we need them in quick

Valencia belongs at a club like Everton imo. I don't think he'd even be good enough to break into Spurs' first team. He's "good" but at this level we need players who can make a difference on their part of the pitch. I would also kick out Young but he has looked a changed man in pre-season.

We'd be buying Cuadrado to play at RWB mate. Admittedly he'd be pretty incredible to have in that position BUT I think our priority should be buying a class CM like Strootman (I know we'd have to wait until January for him).

If we can buy Cuadrado, Strootman & a class CB then I'd be happy with buying the RWB now. BUT that would cost another £80m minimum! Surely the club aren't going to spend another 80m before next summer?

Why do you need another CM? I think that RWB is more urgent need. Cuadrado is pure class. If I was a ManU fan I would not give a shit about Rafa and Valencia if I could get Cuadrado in their place.

Because our selection of CMs suck - although I'm hopeful Fletcher may be able to do a good job. If LVG really feels that Fletcher will do a splendid job this season, then I'm ok with Cuadrado coming in over a new CM.

Cuadrado would be much much better than Valencia/Rafael but I think there's a potential to turn Young into a strong RWB based on his pre-season form.

                What looks scarier:

                Cuadrado...Herrera...Fletcher...Shaw

                OR

                Young...Herrera....Strootman....Shaw

It's down to opinion, but I think having Strootman would be better for our team as he'd help our midfield to dominate possession and break up play when faced against teams with players like Sterling, Ozil & Fabregas etc.

I think you might be right about Strootman and I wonder whether he'll just try and get by with Fletch/Cleverley/Herrera until January

Valencia is good and I think rwb is an ideal position for him (as I do Rafael) so I don't see the need to spend the money on Cuadrado

That said he looked good in the world cup and I'd happily take him 🙂

Fletcher has been looking really good in pre season (made some very silly mistakes vs Liverpool but I think that's just him being slightly rusty).

I really feel like Valencia isn't worth having at the moment. I agree with the sentiment that RWB is an area we need to buy for but I think we should prioritise in this order:

                1. World Class CB (Hummels, Mangala, Benatia)

                2. Potentially World Class CM (Strootman, Verrati)

                3. First team worth CB (the Caliber of Jones/Evans)

                4. Strong RWB (Cuadrado)

my thoughts: utd have a great fixture list for sep. No idea with dezko, is he or isnt he?! - debuchy luis, no idea.... also weak i think in depth, particuarly lack of arsenal and spurs and everton threats. Recommendations welcome.

    Evenings Folks,

    Which option more appealing:

    A) Ramsey, Bojan, Erikson
    B) Ramsey, 8.5 Striker (Ade, Giroud, Bony), Davis
    C) Sanchez, Bojan/Fletcher, Davis

If you prefer B...which striker would you go for?

    I'm currently on A...thanks guys! 😀

Tadic has more explosive potential that's for sure. Siggy has never seen stats like him in any league he's played in. However, it's just potential until he proves he can cut it in the Prem.

Siggy is the safer pick for now due to his budget friendly price and familiarity with the league.

      I'm going for both 🙂

      1. I like Fab but either option could work. Fab has had more pre-season and could start in the no10 slot at the start. Haz probably for the season.
      2. Yes
      3. Jovetic to start the season but when Aguero is fit, probably Dzeko.
