After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

    Ahhh shit.

    I now have Coutinho 😀

The thinking: 5 goals and 7 assists in 2327 minutes last season, plus he looks set to play a more crucial role with the departure of Suarez. If he were to play a full 3420 minute season, he would net a solid 150pts given that rate of scoring 🙂
Plus he's only owned by 4.3% of managers - differential central!
Would take him over Lamela/Erik any day as well.

Consider that this is coming from a Utd fan. Lol.

    Anyone else fancy Cout?

Hell no. Look at Shelvey stats last season (both Goals + Assists & on the season ticker), he destroys Matic. I can't guarantee he'll do as well as last season, but I'm certain he'll score a lot more than Matic this season on FPL.

Posted this the other day, thought it was worth a re-post incase some of you missed it.

I love researching into which teams could keep the most clean sheets, as I feel this is the hardest part to predict. I wanted to construct a table which represents which teams have the best fixtures to play my defenders in.

I needed a point scoring system to identify the 'easy' fixtures. Here's how I worked out the points.
    - 5 points for a promoted club.
    - 1 point for finishing in the bottom half of the league table.
    - 1 point for being in the bottom half of the goals scored table.
    - 1 point for being in the bottom half of the shots on target table.
    - 1 point for being in the bottom half of the shots inside the box table.

    This is the outcome:
5 points - Leicester, QPR, Burnley.
4 points - Crystal Palace, West Ham, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Hull.
    3 points - West Brom.
    2 points - Swansea, Stoke.
    1 point - Newcastle.

The next step was to look at each Premier League teams fixtures for the first 15 gameweeks (I only done up to here because things will change by that time) and total up their points. Home games are usually considered to be easier, so for each fixture if it was a home game I added 1 point and if it was an away game I took away 1 point. Another thing to note is if the fixture was 1 point I didn't include this as I wouldn't consider it to be an easy fixture and wouldn't be looking to play my defender in that game.

    Here's the table - http://imgur.com/1e3TmEm

From the 'Average' column we can identify which clubs are the best to rotate.

If you want to see these easy fixtures on the Season Ticker then put in these figures - http://imgur.com/rwkYsFa

The season ticker will then look like this, which shows all of these easy fixtures to pit your defenders against - http://imgur.com/dao1uzM

I did something similar to show that QPR rotate well with Crystal Palace but if you have an extra million Stoke will do better than either over 1st 8 Weeks despite lack of rotation. I do not have that million unless I down grade Hazard to Fabregas or Pelle to AUstin and I am not sure I want to do that

I really rate Sterling and think he will have an incredible season and I definitely want him at some point but the early fixtures look tough.
Play it safe and pick him from the start or risk it and wait for at least 3 weeks. With about 25% ownership his price will definitely drop if he doesn't get at least 1 goal and 1 assist in opening 3 but anything more and it will be rising and I won't be able to afford him.
Assuming I defo want him at some point, what do I do?

        Current team is
        De Gea - Krul
        F.Luis - Debuchy - Cameron - Mariappa - Collins/Ferdinand
        Mata - Eriksen/Lamela - De Jong - Shelvey - Tiote/Albrighton
        Rooney - Costa - Adebayor/Dzeko

but I am pretty sure I will swap Debuchy to B.Davies and that will allow me to swap De Jong to Sterling (or possible Fabregas for early games.)

Has played in the hole behind the strikers, and also out wide coming inside. He does like to gamble with his 20 yarders, but he looks set to be more influential this season. Reckon he'll provide more than he slots.

Not being biased or smth but once you refer to Suarez's departure being major doubt over Gerro's possible spoils this season, it would be nice to do excact the same taking Sterling into consideration. Of course the latter has the better chance racking up points being utilized further up the pitch, but if five opening games of the last season taught us something it's most defo that without someone, anyone Suarez-like in the Liverpool's teamsheet, Rodgers's side will be more compact and more cautions on their style of play. My point being, it is not down to one player ie Gerro taking it on the chin, it's the whole team post Suarez era. Just as a reminder, five of Sterling’s assists last year ended in Suarez goals, and six of his nine goals came via Suarez assists. Cheers.

    Rooney, Costa, Sturridge now.

    RVP, Aguero possibly when fit.

Can't see any other forwards I'd consider atm.

who's the best 4.5m def needs to be nailed on (my 4th def in a 3-5-2 as I've picked luis &/Cahill who ewill undoubtedly be subject to some rotation)

preferably for the first 10 weeks,

    also side note

are Chester / Rosenoir nailed on?

    Caulker Wisdom Davies
    Sterling Mata Ramsey Eriksen
    Rooney Diego Costa Dzeko

    Myhill Albrighton Moore Bruce

Would you do De gea to Begovic to free up .5 to upgrade bruce or moore to a 4.5 like Figueroa/Mariappa
    suggestions??

What are Dzeko and Jovetic's preseason mins so far?

Also how many goals/assists apiece? Who looks more involved?

Uhhh Dzeko has no goals and I don't believe he has any assists either. Jovetic has 5 goals and I don't know about his assists. But Jovetic looks way more involved at the moment
