634x258 Great Expectations

After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

Which would you remove from these 4 and put siggy in place of? Ideally would be none but i am trying something out.

    A) Fab
    B) Silva
    C) Mata

Not enough midfield slots this year, and still I'll probably go 3-4-3

Good FB, lost his place to Ben Davies when he had his injury (ankle if I remember correct so kept him out for a while) and couldn't muscle his way back in. Is a full back that deserves to be playing frequently so I reckon he's safe.

Front 8 almost identical to mine, except I've gone for Eriksen over Lamela, Jovetic over Dzeko as a 1 or 2 week start of season punt. The 0.5 saved let me switch to a Speroni/Green keeper rotation, which I'm much happier with than the Krul/Foster setup I had beforehand.

Think I'm settled on things for now. Had Nasri in my head from the start for City cover given he's had a summer off, as per Ramsey and Eriksen this can only be a good thing. Jovetic though is bugging me. If I take Jovetic as third striker, I can then spend the 0.5m on Eriksen and have Sterling early..?

    So

Nasri, Eriksen and Bobby Z (bench) 3-5-2

    or

Sterling, Jovetic and Wanyama (bench) 3-4-3

I can just see Jovetic being a constant headache, where as Nasri is more secure and still brings in the points..

So that brings it down to Sterling or Eriksen!?

    Hazard - Sanchez - Lamela - Siggy - Tadic

don't like this at all, sorry, you've had to compromise too much to get hazard/sanchez/rooney/lukaku all in. I'd say you have to take one of those out. Or at least downgrade Shaw. No mileage at all in having him over say Evans who is cheaper. Cameron/Wisdom/Chester all slight doubts and Lamela is a punt. Jelavic... well, he's Jelavic... and Tadic could be amazing, but is still a well educated punt.

    Young love??

See what I did with the title of this post?

Anyway, people are suddenly beginning to consider Ashley young after a decent pre-season. It seems most are going against one of the cardinal FPL rules don't get reverse OOP players

People are even saying "great value midfielder playing at wing back"

Surely that sentence alone (bar the value bit) should steer you away?

Not nailed on, OOP, previously a huge let down, steer clear.

Very short term with the injuries but if you need a cheap 5th mid and have a United spot I reckon he's better than playing Siggy week 1

Siggy uh te while against a team with a new formation allbeit at old Trafford,

Or a 50% chance of a midfielder playing wing back against an arguably leaky team

I'd go siggy personally, but a string bench should allow him to sit on wood just for week 1.

Is it a risk to have Hazard from GW1 considering he may be rested? Or do people expect him to run riot early on?

no Jose has already talked him up and if he plays at least 60 mins in the next preseason game he'll be nailed on for first match. It's on a Monday as well so even more time.

Just a quick question, probably more of a challenge for anyone with more time and skill than I currently have - how has preseason form in previous years carried over into the subsequent season? Is it a mixed bag, are there conclusions we can draw from how things have translated in the last few years.

Example, when Michu burst into the scene a few years back, we're there clues in his preseason form? When Soldado flopped last year, did his form hint that it was on the cards? On a grander scale, can we see a trend with teams as a whole?

I guess we're all looking at preseason for clues and it seems like the best logical place to get a measure of a player and a team - can history tell us how much to read into it?

Sorry if it's been asked and answered previously...

As much as it looks like you've taken time to write, i5s a simple answer...

We can look at how teams set up, roughly who first choice will be, but when it comes to scoring, it means nothing

Yes, that's logical thanks - but a lot if people are getting carried away with form, Jovetic being a good example. Also, the preseason form is sited in a lot of the articles on this website such as the two Great Expecations peices in the last few days.

The upshot for us is Davies should be first choice, with Rose providing good competition

There's a new manager Poche there, who is the one who's understanding of that team actually means something. And that's something they don't know more than we do. So, I'd personally wait to see what Poche will do. Seems to me the competition for the LB spot is wide open at the moment.

"When fit, Rose was unchallenged as starting left-back under Villas-Boas and Sherwood, though a toe injury hindered his development. The arrival of Davies will not only provide much-needed competition in this position, but more importantly allows Vertonghen to regularly play in his favoured centre-back role."

I fail to see how that settles the argument...

Has anyone thought that the presence of Drogba may improve/safeguard Costa from flopping?

I was of the opinion that Costa could flop until they brought Drogba in. Similar players in some ways, late bloomers, strong front men, the type of players Mou likes up front, Drogba slowly entering a coaching role etc...

I think Drogba will be a very good influence for Costa.

Someone posted a great 'ironies of football ytransfersthis season' & one point was regarding Lukaku, I think your point would be more aimed at Lukaku (If still there).. Costa, yes, will benefit from Drogba, but has the quality not to worry if he'll flop, I think he'll do fantastic
