After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

    Krul, (Elliot)
Cameron, Rosenoir, Clyne, Van Aanholt, Bruce (kinda going cheap on defenders)
    Mata, Hazard, Ramsey, Eriksen, Albrighton
    Costa, Rooney, Pelle

looking to keep the strikers, not too sure of Mata - is it better to put a liverpool midfielder in? like sterling or coutinho, and upgrade a defender? and not too sure whether to stick with Eriksen or get Lamela

      All the time.

Mine has 70 something names now? 🙂

During preseason tinkering is saves so much time not having to swap between teams or try & remember who was *that guy* I read about in that post three days ago...

Also, let's me quickly see the ownership #'s for players I feel are relevant, making choosing differentials a breeze.

It helps me remeber to check up on the *Yun's* of the world aka. £4mil punts that probably won't pan out but I'd otherwise never think of.

During the year, I always have my first team & targeted transfers in their as well.

Sorting your team by Value (form) is a nice quick way to see if you have any dead wood relative to some of the lesser discussed options around.

(For example, this let me *rediscover* mid priced talents: Arnautovic & Snodgrass late last year which certaintly helped for the run in)

Overall, if you're diligent, purge the list often & only keep relevant targets along with your fifteen players it's such a valuable feature.

    Begovic Krul

    Rooney Costa Austin

Too weak in defence, or worth the risk for the attacking potential?

Bavies is going to be rotated by the looks of it so he's a risk. And Vlaar (at Villa) has terrible fixtures after GW3.

I like Bony but have an irrational hatred of Lukaku after he burned me for the umpteenth time. Any better options for me to choose from? 🙂

Anyone thinking ashley young might be worth a go at 5.5? Seems to be getting games in pre-season

5th mid option but takes away another United position, in case you wanted to have Mata-Rooney and a defender/DDG

A lot on here are getting him. But I just don't have my team set-up in a way that I can gamble on him.

He will be rotated that's for sure, with Shaw being the go-to guy at LWB and Toni V & Rafael vying for RWB spot. It's going to be tough for him to nail down a spot in the long run

Who do you think are the bargains in each position this year?
(by 'bargain' I mean very generously priced for their anticipated points return, so even an expensive buy could be a bargain). Here are my suggestions:

    GK - Guzan
    Def - Clyne
    Mid - Siggy
    Fwd - Bojan

i reckon Costa will be on fire this season, so even though he is 10.5 i reckon he will pick up more than the likes of rvp

Do you think Ferdinand will be a goal threat for QPR on set pieces?

Caulker will be... 5 goals last year and just 0.5 more

tempting.. but 5.0 for a QPR defender is a no go for me I think

Ferdinand wasnt much of a goal threat the last few years... too old to run up and down the pitch

Not really. He never scored many for Utd, can't see that changing at QPR.

I wouldnt even choose him at all. The guy physically can't play two games in a week and has been on a special training program for years just to keep him fit enough to play one game a week (or even less at Utd last season)

    Lamela makes me nervous

He feels like the Trojan Horse or the Ides of March

Beware the Argentinian attacker with good pre-season form

Does Ashley Young actually play as a wingback when he plays and Shaw doesn't? I know he does on paper, but I can't imagine him taking on any defensive responsibilities whatsoever. So regardless of where he's meant to be in my mind I'd see him pretty much to the left of the front 2.

He does a lot of tracking back and covering, basically runs the whole wing by himself.

I couldn't see Hazard defending two years ago but Mourinho has made him. Same thing couod happen with Young.

I watched all the friendlies so far and can confirm that he was playing WB (except in one game- think it was Madrid where we switched to 4-3-3 for the last 20-odd minutes and he played in a front 3)

His work rate has been fantastic and he's really adapted well to the defensive demands of the WB role.

He obviously doesnt want to be sold

I wouldn't worry about a season long rotation, since you'll get a wc in January anyway

Until then the best looks like Krul/Foster

If you want to pay 9.5 I'd go for Begovic and get either Krul or Guzan to cover his tough fixtures

You can do Begovic and Guzan/Foster. It's not quite a season long rotation, I think you have to swap Guzan/Foster a couple of times

Cesc or Hazard. Is Hazard worth 1m more. Pro's and cons for each and which one are you going for? 1m could be critical when doing the final tinkering
