Diego Costa grabs the headlines with a superb opening goal in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Fenerbahce. Eden Hazard and Oscar are handed just over an hour apiece as they build up match fitness ahead of the season opener with Burnley next Monday. Manuel Pellegrini rules a number of World Cup stars out of the Community Shield match against Arsenal, Romelu Lukaku is set to miss Everton’s final friendly, while Alan Pardew is hopeful that Siem de Jong will make Newcastle’s game with Real Soceidad on Sunday.

Costa Nets in Blues Win
Diego Costa struck a fantastic solo effort as Chelsea beat Fenerbahce 2-0 in the first of two 45-minute matches last night. The Brazilian’s strike took his tally to two goals and three assists over the summer and as the Blues prepare for back-to-back opening mathces against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester, Costa is staking a real claim for a place alongside Wayne Rooney in our opening three-man front lines – he’s now up to 25% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Jose Mourinho named last season’s familiar back-four and keeper, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic handed the full-back roles on either side of Gary Cahill and John Terry. Having been utilised in the role in “the hole” in recent matches, Cesc Fabregas dropped into the double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, allowing Eden Hazard, Oscar and Andre Schurrle to line up behind Costa in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Ivanovic grabbed his second of the summer after netting the rebound from a Schurrle long range free-kick.

In the second game against Besiktas, Mourinho made three changes to his starting XI in a 1-0 defeat. Filipe Luis came in for Azpilicueta on the left of defence, continuing the uncertainty over the full-back berths, whilst Ramires and Willian replaced Schurrle and Oscar in the attacking midfield three, with Hazard retaining his place on the left. The Belgian managed 63 minutes over the two games, whilst Oscar was also afforded just over an hour in his first taste of summer action.

World Cup Stars Remain Sidelined for City
Manuel Pellegrini rolled out the City team news ahead of tomorrow’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal tomorrow. The Chilean confirmed that Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna, Martin Demichelis and Fernandinho will not be involved, after all six only returned to training on Monday. Pellegrini also revealed new loan signing Frank Lampard won’t yet play a part for the Etihad club, whilst Alvaro Negredo is still some time away from returning. Aguero’s lack of action, allied with Negredo’s stint on the sidelines, continues to strengthen Stefan Jovetic’s case for a start against Newcastle next weekend. The Montenegro forward has struck five times over the summer, yet remains a real differential heading into the final few days, with just 6% ownership in FPL.

“All the players that have arrived on Monday will not be ready to play on Sunday. These players have had a special pre-season for this week and it will continue into next week. Lampard is not ready to play. We will see if he is ready to play in the Premier League. For the moment, the squad has no injury problems – only Alvaro Negredo. He is recovering well but he has at least two or three months that he will not play. He is at Carrington, working on different things so there is no problem.”

Belgian Duo Set to Miss Out for Toffees
Roberto Martinez has confirmed both Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas will sit out Everton’s final summer friendly against SC Paderborn later today. Neither player has featured in pre-season after starring for Belgium in the World Cup but with just a week to go, the Toffees boss seemed unconcerned over their lack of action. The 9.0-priced Lukaku is the fourth most popular forward in FPL and currently sits in 23% of teams ahead of next weekend’s clash against Leicester and his owners will eagerly be awaiting further updates on his match sharpness – Steven Naismith could potentially in line to start up front if Lukaku fails to prove his fitness in time.

“For Romelu, it will depend on how he adapts to work from now until August 16, but remember every player is a bit different and Romelo has been training for 10-15 days on his own. We will see…We will never take a risk. If a player is not fully fit, we are not going to use him for 90 minutes, that’s for sure….After this weekend, I would consider Muhamed Besic, Ross Barkley, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines all to be fully fit, so it will only be Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas who might not start the season.”

Pardew Hopeful of De Jong Return
The Newcastle boss confirmed he is optimistic that the Dutchman will recover from a foot problem in time for Sunday’s final friendly. De Jong leapt onto Fantasy radars after scoring in each of his first two pre-season appearances but was forced off with injury in the Magpies third match and has failed to feature thereafter. Fellow new boys Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere have since scored two and three times respectively and the new additions are filling Pardew with confidence foe the season ahead:

“Siem de Jong should be okay for Sunday’s match with Real Sociedad. Add him in the mix, we could really trouble teams. That’s something we didn’t do in the second half of last season. We haven’t had a lot of time with Remy (Cabella), Moussa (Sissoko) or Daryl (Janmaat). But we are looking much stronger offensively. It was nice the guys got their goals.”

I like Davis the most for 5.0, but I probably don't think the 5m guys are enough better than the 4.5m guys at the moment. You'd never really want to play them anyway so might as well have a cheap 8th mid/fwd until we have more money

Hi guys, having real confusion deciding my gk strategy

    A: de gea + 4m keeper.....
    - a bit risky if degea gets injured (slim chance),
    - for 5.5m, i can get a utd def so chance of more points with a def
    - forced to play with degea when utd's bad fixtures start and i dont want to waste a ft on gk

B: de gea + 4.5m gk who rotates for utd's tough games // begovic + fabianski
    - 10m just seems too much to spend on gk

    C: foster + krul
    - looks good, best option for 9m i reckon
    - krul seems underpriced given last season, without europa, i expect newcastle to do well
    - till gw jan WC, have about 7 tough fixtures

    D: speroni + green
    - palace should be good defensively
    - have 4 tough fixtures till jan WC

So based on above, leaning towards D

other options i considered but wasnt convinced with fixtures were
    - hull + wba
    - stoke + wba
    - palace + newcaslte

    Thoughts?

    @gargamel

From last page. I looked into what games jovetic played last season to see how pellegrini used him. Dzeko or negredo always partner aguero or jovetic. It was never the latter two together. Its only if city play 4-5-1 in a tough game that dzeko won't play.

Caveat: assuming nothings changed in how pellegrini thinks about him.

I wonder how Pelle will do and whether it'll be worth extra midfield investment rather than having two big strikers (like Sturridge/Costa, Rooney/Sturridge, etc.).

Right now I've got a midfield of
Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Sterling and Henderson

    with a front 3 of
    Rooney, Pelle, Wickham

I am considering losing either Hazard or Sanchez and trading up Pelle for Diego Costa. Seems like it'd be a wash. What say you people?

After seeing that defence, everyone needs to transfer Guzan out. Unless save points help him out.

        It's not... most likely:

        Richardson - Okore - Vlaar - Senderos - Hutton.

If it's two CBs take out Senderos. That is so much stronger.

Most likely it'll be a back four, so he doesn't have a chance there. He's been in midfield all pre-season, so doesn't look like Bacuna is being considered there. Quite happy about that, to be honest.

As a United fan I'll be pretty darn disappointed if we buy Di Maria for £55m.

Cuadrado or Reus would be better options imo (Reus more because of his age - even if Di Maria is currently better than him). We could get both of those players of at LEAST £15m cheaper.

I'll then be really annoyed if we don't buy Strootman in January because we spent our transfer cash on Di Maria.

I also don't understand where Di Maria would fit in a 3-5-2 system (I know the same issue applies to Reus).

Someone said he'd slot behind Rooney & RVP - so we'll bench one of the best CAM in the premier league, one of the brightest young prospects in the world, and a 2 times Bundesliga player of the year for this £55m purchase?

    What does everyone else think?

It tastes bad in my mouth saying this but I'm sure we could tempt Reus with big wages. The Bundesliga stars don't get paid so much from what I know.

I think Strootman would join if we get off to a strong start to the season - he'd be joining LVG & RVP.

What I'm sure of is that both the clubs of Reus & Cuadrado would accept £40m for their players.

I was making the same not fit for 3-5-2 system point on the last page. And for 40-50m pounds, I don't think he is worth it. United need good and hard defenders first imo

I think our priority should be in this order:

1 World class/potentially world class who is already a "leader" CB (Hummels?)
1 Potentially world class CM (Strootman, Verrati etc)
1 Very good CB (Daley Blind?)
        1 RWB (Cuadrado?)

I think he'd be an absolutely brilliant buy. A few players will probably be shoved out of the door in the coming weeks and Di Maria is very versatile. Can play centrally (like he does for Argentina) or out wide. Top player. Can't see what's not to like.

Why should we play him centrally if we have Mata?

Whether or not you think Di Maria is better at CAM than Mata, there's no way we should be benching/selling Mata unless somebody bids £45m+ for him - which isn't going to happen.

If he doesn't play as a CAM, there is no room for him in the 3-5-2 we've been working on throughout pre-season!

Has Di Maria ever played there in his career? Surely Strootman would be a much better fit for that role (a box to box CM).

I don't see LVG paying £55m to play Di Maria as a CM behind Mata.

Ahh now I see what you mean. Yeah, that's defo not what would happen given that Rooney would have to play on wing & LVG has said more than once he's using 3-5-2 to fit Mata, Rooney & RVP into their proper positions.

The more I think about it, the more this sounds like rubbish. We're going to play a 3-5-2 based on our pre-season, I don't see why we'd suddenly make a £55m flair bid for a winger who can't play at RWB.

Agree with this. I don't see D Maria being essential by any stretch.

I also think Cuardado is overrated, and Ufd would pay a massively inflated bill for him.
