With just six days remaining until the 2014/15 season gets up and running, City and Arsenal go head-to-head for the Community Shield this afternoon. As expected, both side’s starting line-ups have been heavily influenced by a lack of pre-season action for a number of World Cup stars, though Arsene Wenger hands all three of his main summer signings competitive debuts:

Man City Starting XI: Caballero; Clichy, Boyata, Nastasic, Kolarov; Navas, Fernando, Toure, Nasri; Jovetic, Dzeko

Arsenal Starting XI: Szczesny; Debuchy, Koscielny, Chambers, Gibbs; Arteta, Wilshere; Alexis, Ramsey, Cazorla; Sanogo

For City, Stevan Jovetic has the chance to continue the form which has harvested five goals over the summer so far. The Montenegro international is partnered by Edin Dzeko up top and, whilst the likes of Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure also make the XI, Arsenal will be optimistic of taking advantage of an experimental City backline, which sees Gael Clichy fielded as a right-back once again and Aleks Kolarov patrolling the left.

Arsene Wenger names Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers in defence alongside Laurent Koscielny and Kieran Gibbs. Aaron Ramsey owners will be buoyed by what appears to be a move to the attacking midfield three alongside Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez, with Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere sitting in front of the defence. Up front, Sanchez’ role out wide means Yaya Sanogo gets the nod after his four-goal demolition of Benfica in last week’s Emirates Cup, with Olivier Giroud warming the bench again.

Somehow Ramsey reminds me of Lampard in his price without penalties. Looks like he is good. He will always score with all those late (on time) arrivals in the box...

What do you think of this defence:

    DDG/4.0

Felipe Luis, Kaboul, Chambers, Bartley, Wisdom

High risk/high reward or just plain fantasy suicide?

Way too risky for me - you could end up with 0 playing defenders by the end of the month. Probably not, but you get my point.

For those who didn't watch today, this is how I see things:

    Arsenal:
    - Gibbs looked the more attacking of the full-backs, but appeared to pick up a niggle towards the end.
    - Chambers looked solid at centre back. Solid enough to play until Mertesacker returns.
    - In a game of few chances, Ramsey took his goal with the composure we've come to expect.
    - Alexis showed his counter-attacking potential, but lacked a bit of sharpness and his final ball was hit and miss. He was taken off at half time.
    - Giroud came on at half time and scored a powerful long range effort. I'd expect him to start in GW1, with Alexis out wide.

    Man City:
    - Hard to draw too many conclusions with several big names in the stands.
    - Caballero was unconvincing. You couldn't blame him for the goals, but he could have done better.
    - City clean sheets are unlikely until Kompany returns.
    - Kolarov got forward well and managed to get in behind a few times - unlucky not to get an assist.
    - Attacking-wise, City were quiet and lacked any rhythm or fluidity.
    - Nasri and Silva played a half each and looked decent. Navas was quiet.
    - Dzeko and Yaya were subbed mid-way through the second half, with Dzeko set to start up front with Jovetic in GW1. Jovetic looked the sharper of the two, but neither had a real chance. The closest was when Jovetic hit the post with a back post header.

Feel free to shoot me down or ask any burning questions! 🙂

City played two up front, so Arsenal's midfield were tough to break down. Arteta/Ramsey/Wilshere vs Toure/Fernando. I think City missed Silva in the first half, and Jovetic doesn't float off the front as well as Aguero.

If I was pushed either way, I'd say City were poor, rather than Arsenal being excellent.

I worry there's less flexibility as precious few decent strikers tend to emerge at that price, whereas many midfielders do (based on previous seasons).

Looking at a big hitting front three of Sturridge Rooney Costa

Starting midfield of Ramsey Sterling and Sig with Young and Albrighton on the bench

Too much up top or ok? Liverpool's fixture are tough but I still see them getting the goals.

Need a Man City attacking player? Toure is too expensive and I'm not convinced by the others.

    West Ham pre-season recap:

West Ham’s pre-season has been a turbulent one, with just the one win coming most recently on Saturday at home to Sampdoria. There has been a public war of words between Allardyce and Sullivan, and whether Allardyce will make it to Christmas is questionable. Anyway, a pre-season recap for the few people who may be considering West Ham players for their team.

    Results:
    D/D/L/L/D/L/W

    Formation:
Allardyce has mainly stuck to his 4-5-1 (4-3-3) approach, with a 3-5-2 tested during the first half in our last game, mainly due to injuries to our full backs.

    Style:
There has definitely been more emphasis on ball retention and less hoofing. The problem is that we don’t seem to be very good at using it to penetrate defences. I travelled out to Germany for the Schalke cup, and over the two games versus Schalke and Malaga, we mustered one shot on target. With Carroll injured, Valencia unfit and Carlton Cole being Carlton Cole, we only really have Zarate as a ‘proper’ goal threat – and he seems to be very hit or miss. I really do fear about where the goals are going to come from in the early part of the season. Therefore I’d avoid any punts on Zarate/Valencia as a cheapish third forward.

    Injuries:
    Carroll (3 months at least)
Valencia (unfit, may miss first 2-3 games)
    Jenkinson (hamstring, unknown return)
Cresswell (knock, should be fit for first game)
Demel (unknown, wasn’t included in latest squad)
O’Brien (unknown, wasn’t included in latest squad)
Jarvis (unknown, wasn’t included in latest squad after playing most of pre-season)

How I think we’ll line up first game of the season:

    Adrian

    Demel – Tomkins – Reid – Cresswell

    Kouyate – Noble

    Downing – Nolan – Diame

    Cole

How I think we’d line up if all players were fit:

    Adrian

    Jenkinson – Tomkins – Reid – Cresswell

    Kouyate – Noble

    Downing – Nolan – Valencia

    Carroll

    Notes:

I would be wary of owning Adrian – he has had a very average pre-season and I have a feeling that Jussi could end up replacing him/sharing the spot.

Look out for Diego Poyet – he has looked very classy during pre-season and although won’t be a great FPL prospect, it will be interesting to see how he fares once the usual injuries hit the squad.

Kouyate looks a great player too – and could be a nailed on 5th midfielder for FPL teams (5.0m), with the odd chance of a goal/assist, should he venture forward. I’m keeping a close eye on his stats.

In conclusion, I am avoiding West Ham players in my FPL team for now. We haven’t looked defensively solid, and haven’t looked like scoring very often. Still, I hope to be proved wrong 🙂

If Adebayor is over the bout of malaria he could be worth a punt with Spurs' early fixtures.

He can't be that bad if he's running around playing football. He's not exactly at deaths door. I'm very tempted. Possibly Bony instead.
