With just six days remaining until the 2014/15 season gets up and running, City and Arsenal go head-to-head for the Community Shield this afternoon. As expected, both side’s starting line-ups have been heavily influenced by a lack of pre-season action for a number of World Cup stars, though Arsene Wenger hands all three of his main summer signings competitive debuts:

Man City Starting XI: Caballero; Clichy, Boyata, Nastasic, Kolarov; Navas, Fernando, Toure, Nasri; Jovetic, Dzeko

Arsenal Starting XI: Szczesny; Debuchy, Koscielny, Chambers, Gibbs; Arteta, Wilshere; Alexis, Ramsey, Cazorla; Sanogo

For City, Stevan Jovetic has the chance to continue the form which has harvested five goals over the summer so far. The Montenegro international is partnered by Edin Dzeko up top and, whilst the likes of Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure also make the XI, Arsenal will be optimistic of taking advantage of an experimental City backline, which sees Gael Clichy fielded as a right-back once again and Aleks Kolarov patrolling the left.

Arsene Wenger names Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers in defence alongside Laurent Koscielny and Kieran Gibbs. Aaron Ramsey owners will be buoyed by what appears to be a move to the attacking midfield three alongside Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez, with Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere sitting in front of the defence. Up front, Sanchez’ role out wide means Yaya Sanogo gets the nod after his four-goal demolition of Benfica in last week’s Emirates Cup, with Olivier Giroud warming the bench again.

My only issue with Ramsey is that he may be forced deeper when Ozil and Walcott return. Arsenal will need to accommodate Walcott, Sanchez, Giroud and Ozil in attacking positions. If no quality defensive midfielder arrives, he may find himself dropping to cover the likes of Arteta or Flamini, fetching and carrying but not allowed to make those penetrating runs into the box....

True, but there are usually injuries and urgent form issues to take priority. I don't want to pick someone for my initial squad whose role is very likely to suffer as soon as 3 games in, if Walcott's projected return is on schedule. Way too short-sighted..

ramsey is too important to sacrifice in a deeper role. when Walcott is fit I can see theo on right, sanchez down middle, ozil on left. or maybe sanchez n Walcott on wings with giroud upfront

has mannone done anything to warrant being dropped for pantyman?

looking at krul and either mannone or foster. foster might rotate slightly better but mannone is a points machine.

      Walker, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Rose/Davies

No-one knows the starting LB, Walker might have injury troubles, so Naughton could come in, Kaboul may be replaced by Musacchio if he signs.

hi gents, whats the view on qpr's defense? do we think it might be tight, was very leaky last time around.

    playing with gk rotations
    A: speroni + green
    - current gk's in my team
    - cost 9.5m
    - palace should be decent defensively, dont know qpr well enough
    - best rotation fixture wise i can find upto a combined cost of 9.5m

    B: krul + foster
    - cost 9
    - i think both newcastle/wba can be tight defensively.
    - rotation isnt as good as option A

    C: degea + 4m
    - cost 9.5
    - will have to remove degea when his fixtures turn
    - if a utd def bandwagon picks up, it will be hard to get on it.

Chelsea playing 3-5-2 right now. Brilliant football.

Zouma Iva and Cahill at the back. Azpi and Salah wingbacks. Fab Matic Oscar in the middle and Hazard-Costa uptop.

Incase you are wondering, Filipe Luis, Schurrle, Torres, Drogba(injury), Willian went off by HT.

Yes. Played LWB when we needed a goal against Cardiff. It's like this, we had a normal 4-2-3-1, take Cole off for a ST and push Ivanovic into central midfield. Ramires/Willian/Schurrle shift out to RWB.

He barely covers the left flank though - it's open. And when he comes back to tackle, doesn't end well.

          Well that's Hazard's trademark, isn't it?
Not really involved but a couple brilliant flashes and the game's decided.

Especially in friendlies he can't gear himself up to be really involved.

We have a game two days later against Soceidad - he should play there. He hasn't played today - though was on the bench. Only pre-season game till now he hasn't played.

I think he should start against Burnley - Zouma was horrible in preseason and Cahill-Ivanovic doesn't really click.

        Here you go:

Some players in the budget range who may be of consideration:

        4.0 defenders

Hutton - been getting gametime and possible wing back, hence more attacking points. Minus - this is Villa.
Wisdom - getting some gametime at WBA. The Costa Rican may play in midfield, so could be nailed on.
Moore - young Leicester defender who bright things are thought of. Lost his place last year but looks to have gotten it back
Duff - old centre half. Could be guarenteed a spot if Burenley don't sign another defender.

        4.5 defenders (starters without doubts)

Taylor - now nailed on due to Davies departure
Vlaar - looks to be stayig at Villa. Will play.
Coloccini - nailed on for Newcastle
Williamson - POTY for Newcastle last year (I think) and has started last 2 games, dislodging Taylor and Mbwia
O'Shea - will play - more certanties in Sunderland defence than in goal
Brown - but will be injured very soon
Van aanholt - attacking full back who will play
Jones - new signing and likely to slot right in.
        Chester - Bruce loves him
Ferdinand - they must be paying him a packet and he loves Harry and Harry loves him.
Pocognoli - first choice left back at WBA. More guarenteed than Wisdom.

        4.5 Mids

Marney - will play most likely and had decent stats in Championship
Albrighton - there are no guarentees with his game time. He COULD play and be very effective as stats for Villa (when he played) suggest, but it's still a risk.

        5.0 Mids

Davis - has some set piece duties if Tadic doesn't play. Decent point score last year. More likely to play than JWP who is vying with others for a starting berth (new signing plus GAston)
Dorrans - on pens and signed a new contract that suggests he'll play.
Allen - has been impressing in training for Liverpool more than any other player. Has got himself in top notch fitness. Rodgers loves him. Not 'nailed on' though, but likely to get some game time. Maybe too much of risk compared to the other two here.

5.5 forwards (no likely starters below this price)

Bojan - in cracking form in pre-season and looks 'nailed on'.
Nugent - on pens and likely to start but Ulloa could threaten his place.

Where shall i spend the remaining 1.5m?

    Krul, Elliot
Terry, Shaw, B Davies, Moore, Duff
    Ramsey, Hazard, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Albrighton
    Rooney, Costa, Austin

I do not fancy upgrading Eriksen to Mata.

Eriksen had more points per minute than Mata. It also spreads the risk on Man. Utd coverage.

    A) Elliot and Duff to Foster and Patrick van Aanholt (keep the 0.5m)?

    B) Albrighton to Puncheon (who will rotate with Austin)?

    C) Austin to Pelle?

    D) Something else (please specify)

    Many thanks.

Na man, I might get Baines in too and get a proper boom-shaqa-wow-wow defence of:

        Baines Kolorov Trippier

Wouldn't select those defenders personally, but I like the money balance more in the Ramsey option.

So is Chambers supposed to start for Arsenal now when Mertesacker is resting? Could be great for 4,5 mil if he starts some matches. Anyone going with him? 🙂

Any idea of how long Merte will rest? Currently have Vert-Evans- Van Aanholt-Coloccini-4 mil as my defense with the first 2 always playing and SUnderland/Newcastle rotating, but might have to rethink if Merte will be gone for a few matches.
