Cesc Fabregas grabs a pair of assists as Chelsea overcome Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor. Diego Costa nets on his league debut, while Branislav Ivanovic and Andre Schurrle are also amongst the goals as the Blues get off to an impressive start.

Chelsea New Boys Dazzle in Burnley Destruction
Positioned in the Blues double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas showed that, despite a deep-lying role, he looks poised to play a major part in our Fantasy seasons. The Spaniard pulled the strings for Jose Mourinho’s side in an outstanding first-half display that harvested a pair of assists and the maximum bonus points as he overshadowed the pricier Eden Hazard in the Chelsea midfield.

Up front, Diego Costa continued the momentum that saw him score four times over the summer friendlies. Drafted in by 37% of FPL managers prior to the weekend, the former Atletico Madrid man was second only to Wayne Rooney in last week’s Captain Poll and his predatory instincts will surely persuade more to invest as Mourinho’s men welcome Leicester, Swansea and Villa to the Bridge in the next five.

Schurrle Stakes a Claim
The German’s excellent strike also brings him onto radars as a potential mid-price option. Coming in at just 7.5, Schurrle scored eight times in just over 1400 minutes last season, with an average of 176.4 minutes per goal quicker than any Chelsea player – currently sitting in just 6% of FPL sides, he looks a real prospect if he can retain the role on the right of the attacking midfield three.

Luis and Cech Warm the Blues Bench
Mourinho started last season’s back-four for the Burnley clash as new signing Filipe Luis was named amongst the substitutes, with Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic fielded as full-backs. Clearly, though, the new boy won’t be expected to sit on the bench every week and it may not be for a number of matches before we get a clear idea of Mourinho’s intentions – there seems little conclusions can be made on last night’s team sheet. Thibaut Courtois got the nod ahead of Petr Cech for the number one jersey, though before the match, the Blues boss added further uncertainty to the situation by stating:

“Thibaut is my number one tonight against Burnley. I don’t make decisions for the season; I make decisions for a match.”

Arfield’s Budget Appeal
The Clarets man was one of only three budget midfielders to get amongst the goals this week, along with Ki Sung-Yeung and Lee Cattermole. Having netted eight times in last year’s Championship, Arfield carries the main scoring threat in the centre of the park in Sean Dyche’s side and, after proving his capabilities against a side that chalked up 18 clean sheets last season, could come into contention as a cheap fifth midfield option.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    What's wrong with knee jerking?

I see the phrase knee jerking a lot this week. People accusing managers of knee jerking because they want to get Fabregas in for say Mata or Hazard or Sigurdsson in for say Ashley Young. Each week there will be similar popular transfers made and similar accusations of knee jerking.

But what is so wrong with knee jerking? Surely it makes sense to draft in good players, especially those with great fixtures and price rises.

It strikes me that people are basing these decisions not on jerky knees but analysis of the fixtures, form (inc pre season) and underlying stats (if they have FFScout membership). Surely that is good management.

A correct use of the word knee jerk would perhaps be to get in Arfield or Cattermole because they scored. Good fantasy managers would know they are not going to do that every week, in fact that's probably their only goal of the season over with.

So what do you think of 'knee jerk' as a criticism of other managers? Is it overused? And what's wrong with picking form players anyway, as long as it’s backed up with research?

I wish I had knee jerked last season and got Yaya and Ramsey in and then I wouldnt have finished 75k!! This season is going to be different.

      Knee on acid!!

exactly...knee jerking, especially early on is the difference between a great final score and a terrible one.

As tempting as it is, I think Mata -> Fabregas is the definition of knee jerk. Everyone who got Mata in done it for a reason and the reason is still there on the ticker on the right hand side.

But what if they saw Mata and Rooney practially trip over themselves at the weekend and what if they looked at the sheer quality of Chelsea and Fabregas in particular? Sounds like a sensible move to me. Chelsea have great fixtures too, remember...and crucially they are a better side than ManU.

I wouldn't class that as knee jerk. Knee jerking I'd say is based on nothing but the points a player got.

I suppose this is true... Perhaps I am clinging to the hope that Mata might start to look like the player he was for those 2 seasons at Chelsea in these next few games.. Perhaps you also answered that by the point that Chelsea are just a better side..

I would honestly not even say the 4 you are getting are any better than the 4 you are ditching as a whole, let alone worth 8 points and 2 FT's.

Aguero will probs be hurt before you can get him and you'll have messed your team up to get him.

I don't HAVE to get Kun in week 3. If he is hurt I already own Dzeko. BUT this way I will own Cesc and Sterling that will prob be 0.5m and 0.3m more expensive by then.

I will 1.5m in the bank and could even get Rojo in.

I would leave it I think. You can easily do Haz to Fab at a later date. Haz looked v threatening last night. If owned Haz I'd give him another game. Realistically if Fab has a stormer against Leicester and Haz blanks again then it is a good sign that Fab offers more points consistency.

I've always given a premium player a couple of games against poor sides...if they can't score against Burnley and Leicester then with the greatest respect to those sides Hazard is never going to score.

Man C are no roll over...Sterling is great but he's not George Best. I own Sterling already btw and am happy to keep but looking at fixtures and form Fab looks great...Sterling so so.

There's plenty of overused terms for Fantasy Football:

      - Template team
      - Season Keeper
      - Knee jerk

There's nothing wrong with picking form players, but can we say that any player has form after one game? Right now I'm more concerned about the money I might lose, it can be a big issue later on in the season.

The point is that one game shouldn't be enough to dissuade you from your original choice.

I think Mata is and was a crap choice, but surely if you thought he was a good choice, one game shouldn't change your mind.

I think that would be correct half way through a season when players have previous form but when its the first game that is all you have as a basis

I have Mata as I thought United would hit the ground running this season. Injuries and other issues have contributed to that not happening so I have to re-evaluate

Everyone's situation is different but I have DDG, Mata and Rooney and I can't justify keeping 3 United players in my first 11 for back to back away games after that shower on Saturday

See that's a great move....you've looked at your long term planning, player prices and you have form and fixtures to back it up. Also its personal to you so not following the crowd - you like Aguero and want him in and you think that Fabregas will outscore Costa...which is not a bad assertion to make.

Feel free to copy and past that next time someone accuses you of being knee jerking. 😉

I agree. Fabregas and Siggy have proven what a few already thought and so those that don't have them are now looking at the best way to get them in. I stuck with Sturridge over Suarez too long last season as I didn't want to 'knee jerk' but that got me no where!

On the flip side I don't get the people bringing in Dier because of his goal. Not even clear if he will be a regular member of the Spurs defence... he is up there with Cattermole

Its about finding the balance between what is a knee jerk and what is just being stubborn for the sake of it.

I think the phrase is over used and is often used to belittle those who decide to do a transfer that they themselves would choose not to do. Often is the case where a certain person won't be able to afford a player if they rise by another 0.1m, but can't get them this week for any number of reasons so blame knee jerkers for the rise.
It's all basically one big stock market, when you're hot you're hot.

I think, after a few weeks, when you can get a proper gauge of form etc., changes naturally materialise. Obviously no one’s starting team is perfect, and you start to realise mistakes if, say, one of your players has blanked for 3 weeks, and another option has racked up the points.

The 2 caveats to this are with too small a sample size, and with a flash in the pan. The latter is how I would categorise the current situation. If you picked a player a week ago, they have not suddenly become a bad option (unless it is a question of game time – see my Jovetic concern below). Players like Mata, Sanchez, Hazard et al are class, and will come good. There is no point chasing points, and the opening GW does not tell us enough to justify wholesale changes.

Then there are the flash in the pan players, that you alluded to Jonty. Those like Arfield and Cattermole, who are not going to repeat those displays on a regular basis (probably again this season). The class of the quality, proven players will shine through, and patience can be key.

It’s a fine line – I have been guilty of hanging on to players for too long, and some seemingly proven players can suddenly flop (Michu and Benteke spring to mind last season). However, on balance, I think patience is the way to go – certainly when you hear people wanting to WC after 1 week. Relax!

It's fine if it's backed up by research, but most of the time it's just because they've had a good gameweek. It's not just about that there are many other factors to consider.

      a. Sigurdsson in for Young is a good move because Young has done very little to prove he's actually woth having. The only reason people got him in was because of a fairly decent pre-season. That is not enough information to guarantee he will do anything and now he's at risk of being played as a left back. Siggy on the other hand has done well last season when coming on for Spurs and even better during his previous spell with Swansea. Coupled with the price rise this move makes sense.

      b. Mata/Cesc is a similar situation. One gameweek is simply not enough information considering they are both good players - one is not inherently better than the other (unlike the Siggy/Young situation). Sure Cesc assisted, but Mata could easily have done so as well. Cesc plays deeper than Mata and with less freedom. LvG could get his act together and Chelsea may struggle against a parked bus at Leicester. Unless it is absolutely obvious Utd are in a crisis this move does not make much sense unless you are purely building TV.

As long as there is more behind the reasoning to transfer a player than chasing last week's points then that isn't a kneejerk by definition.

I think there is a very thin line between inspired moves, which will bring you higher up the rankings (such as Ramsey , Yaya, Coleman last year) and ones, which will weigh you down.

I wouldn't consider getting someone like Fabregas knee-jerking, as he seemed to be class, but I'd actually focus on the frequency of such moves, e.g. if you do it once/twice for the right player or are hell bent on getting the price raises, it isn't really knee jerking it's more about strategic planning, but if you are like a kid in the candy shop or playground wanting all the toys everyone else has, no good will ever come from it and you end up transferring out the real scorers half of the time.

People who brought in Ramsey and Yaya were still called casuals until week 38 last season...surely if they're casuals for having two of the stand out players of last year....then anyone without was surely an idiot?

United were great at the international champions cup. You can say it were just friendly games, but it was against topteams and they won it. Also, their manager is Louis van Gaal.. Everyone was getting United players and after one bad game they're getting ditched already? I'll take the -0,1 or more and I sense there's gonna be a lot of tears later for the people who switched Mata for Fabregas. Just look at Mata's fixtures lol!

Thats the problem with these FFS terms. There isn't really a clear definition of what they are and as such everyone comes to their own interpretations. I don't think anything can be read into any of the popular terms on here, they simply mean different things to different people. The important thing is to look beyond the term and interpret what the poster is trying to say.

Mata at home for GW 1 against Swansea after a good pre season > Cesc at home to Leicester is far from knee jerk....Perfectly good FF managment...even better when you stand to make up to 0.5 on the deal when/if you bring Mata back in.

United got a lot of love in pre season which is suprising considering how poor they were last season. Just take a look at their squad. When will the penny drop?

Inspired by some responses to Jonty's Hot-topic,

    Shortlist of FPL terms

    "Casuals"
People who tend to choose the scoring player in
form thus ruining something only I knew about.
As I am not a casual, I will stubbornly ignore that player
and claim others to be too mainstream.
These people also tend to get my differential (see below)
after he made the mistake of scoring.
Essentially not being casual is like being a hipster.

    "Coverage"
The idea, that once you have a team, the players
    share points.
You cannot afford Fabregas, Sturridge or
    Ramsey?
No worries, you use your coverage picks and
Matic, Lucas and Arteta should get a share of their points.

    "Defender Rotation"
A fickle idea, which makes us scour the bottom of the table for wonderful
defensive options, regardless of the fact that the team conceded 2.5 goals
    a match last season.

    "Demel"
A mythical god-like figure, no team will every be truly complete without him.

    "Differential"
A player I have painstakingly chosen amongst the most obscure picks,
double-checked his ownership is under 1% and when he finally scores,
I am angry that other people will actually buy him.

    "Essential"
Every man and his dog owns this player, but you.

    "Knee-Jerking"
The idea, that if you get a player after he scores well
you are ultimately preparing for failure.

    "Rank"
An overused term used for seeking advice from people luckier than you and
believing that they must know more if they are 10k places above.

    "RMT"
A way how to legally spam a football forum.
Can also be used as a way of showing off , shooting down
any advice, as your team is perfect anyway.

    "Season Keeper"
A player I stubbornly hold onto despite his loss of form and newly
    rising appetite for pies.

    "Template"
The best scoring team, a team I loathe and hate and believe every looser around
has, while I revel in my rank of 1 300 000 and my original team full of wonderful
    differentials.

I hope you find at least some of this funny 🙂

I want to sell Lamela for Fabregas because after his two assists he is clearly 'essential' and a 'season keeper'. I'm concerned however that I'm 'knee-jerking' because its only been one game and I still want spurs 'coverage' for the QPR game. I also like Lamela because he's a 'differential' and all the 'casuals' are jumping on the Fabregas 'bandwagon'. To do this move I'd also need to downgrade a defender, is 'Demel' 'nailed-on'? I'm just a 'casual' Perhaps someone with a high 'rank' can advise?

Round up of replacements for failed pre-season bandwagons

Felipe Luis DEF 6m, Ben Davies DEF 5m

The new chelsea signing was left out of the first game, with Azpilicueta starting in his place. It looks like he will probably be given his first PL start at Stamford Bridge, but it definitely does not look like he’s nailed on and will most likely be rotated with Ivanvoic/Azpilicueta( getting the majority of starts out of the 2 LBs IMO). At 6m, I wouldn’t want a premium defender with a chance of getting benched once in a while.

Same problem with Davies.

    Replacements:

    Clyne

Southampton have excellent fixtures all the way until GW12
    WBA,whm,NEW,swa,QPR,tot,SUN,STK,hul,LEI,avl
Loves to get forward and will surely pick up a few assists if not goals, evident from his 9 point haul this GW with a goal + 2 Bonus points.
Reasonably priced at 5m, leaving you with 1m in the bank to upgrade other areas of your team if you have Luis, and nothing else compromised if you had Davies.
    - Their defensive resolve can only increase with the arrival of Gardos ( who may become an alternative to Clyne if he comes in at 4.5m)

    Young MID 5.5m ( Mutch MID 5.5m )

    Sigurdsson, Ince,

Didn’t look attacking at all against Swansea and looked like the reverse OOP he is, at LWB. ( I’d strongly suggest Januzaj if you still want a budget Man United midfielder punt )
One of the main players owners are looking to get rid of, mainly because he’s a rubbish FPL option IMO 😛

    Replacement options:

Ince

Hull have some great fixtures coming up and have a nice run in the next 4- STK,avl,WHM,new
Is now nailed on in Steve Bruce’s side after the injury to Snodgrass. I’m not too sure on where he’ll play now, but I suppose there’s a chance he could play in the hole with Snodgrass absence ( You’ll have to check this out yourself ). If not, he’ll be playing where he normally does on the left wing.
Looked pretty attacking against QPR, and had decent goal threat. Members might want to have a look at his stats in the member’s area. They’re pretty decent for a 5.5m mid. Just search for Ince’s name and sort by each column.
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/5984/

    Sigurdsson

    Playing in the hole
    Decent fixtures
Solid haul in GW 1 of 13 points
    On set pieces
You all know him, and know you need him! Find an extra 0.5m!

    Jovetic FWD 8m ( Giroud 8.5m?)

Aguero’s back a lot earlier than expected, so looks like Jovetic’s place is in danger with Pellegrini seemingly favouring a Dzeko-Aguero partnership
Tbh, I’d love to have him if he was nailed on. His only problem is his security of starts, looks pretty threatening and a good pick otherwise. I’d advise you to keep him if he looks likely to start GW2, or Pelle gives us more info that helps his chances.

    Replacements:

    Remy 7.5m

Excellent player, looked very lively against Hull, was great at Newcastle last season and hopefully will replicate that form against QPR.
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/5984/
Find his name and sort by each column....particularly his touches in the box.....
    Great stats
Looks like QPR’s main proven attacking force in the PL, and he should be involved in most of QPR’s goals.
QPR are looking to strengthen their midfield & attack with soon to be signings, Fer and Vargas. IMO, they will only positively contribute to Remy’s output
He’s cheaper than Giroud/Jovetic, leaving you with money in the bank to upgrade elsewhere.
Fixtures aren’t the best though, so if you’re one to factor in fixtures a lot it might be best to go for Adebayor or punt on someone like Pelle.

    Adebayor 8.5m

Pretty good fixtures with games against QPR, sun and WBA in the next 4.
Looks nailed on with Poch seemingly favouring him over Soldado, and Kane needing more time before he becomes a regular fixture in the side.
Will be their main man up front with the brilliant Eriksen feeding him.
Will also be on penalties if Soldado’s not on the pitch(which he shouldn’t for the better part of most games)
Had a great run of form at the end of last season, and hopefully will continue that run this season.

    Other alternatives:
    DEF - Caulker, Chester
    MID - Brady, Henderson
    FWD - Pelle, Naismith

Was going to write a disclaimer about this at the end, sort of gave up.

Basically, these aren't failed bandwagons as such. They're GW1 failures and for all I know they'll all get 20 point hauls in GW2. These are just pre season bandwagons that don't look too good anymore after GW1, IMHO.

Was gonna go Naismith for FWD replacements, but not many people fancy him.
Clyne and Siggy are GW1 performers, the FWDs section was hard to find GW1 performers for, at that price. I suppose I could've done Dzeko.

This is all IMO though mate. 🙂

Good post. I have Ben Davies and was looking to transfer him out for Clyne or maybe even Bertrand because of the favourable fixtures.

I know it's a big but (fnar) but if you take Clyne's goal out of the equation Bertrand's stats were arguably more favourable.

Jovetic was superior to Dzeko is almost every way (other than height).

Failure seems harsh for a player who created 3 chances and took 3 shots inside the box.

Agree with the others though. Lamela is a glaring omission, worst player of the gameweek.

Where best to use my transfer this week?

      Krul (Foster)
      Jones, Taylor, Clyne (Caulker, CHAMBERS)
      Hazard, Ramsey, Siggy, MATA (SNODGRASS)
      Rooney, Costa, Bojan
      (0.0m)

a.) SELL SNODGRASS. He’s injured and will fall in value tonight.
b.) SELL MATA. For Sterling – to cash in on price rises
      c.) BOTH of the above.
d.) SELL CHAMBERS. Might lose his place in the team.

Chambers might get 1 more game - keep an eye out on the Besiktas game or if Manolas joins in the next few days. Kosc got on the plane to Turkey but there are rumours he's carrying a slight knock and Per might still not be ready.

As for the others, the only move I might make is Snodgrass for a 4.5 and use the cash next week to upgrade Bojan.

Snodgrass and Chambers would be on your bench anyway though right? Mata's fixtures are better than Sterling's and if you do wait you can deal with the price rises anyway. you could sell Snodgrass for someone dirt cheap and pocket the cash to use next week?

Id go C. or if you dont wanna take a hit, just A. You dont really want to lose value this early in the day. If you lose .1 now on a 6m player like snoddy, you can only replace him with a 5.5 which is limiting you more

My thinking exactly, I can see Fab being quite frustrating in the FPL game due to relatively low goal threat compared to other options. He would need to keep churning out assists to get baps, and I can see him assisting the assister quite a bit with defenders/Costa/Hazard picking up the bonus. In the Sky game he looks a must have!

Although I came into this season with the mindset of not holding back and trying to get on as many early bandwagons as possible, I am convinced that I do not need to take any hits this week. Jumped on Sigurdsson, so will get the inevitable 0.3 rise, and currently own Sterling, Ramsey, and Chester - all likely to rise. Am I right in not taking any hits this week? Fabregas is obviously a prospect and a likely price rise, but Eriksen is the only midfielder I'd ditch for him. Keeping Eriksen for QPR, obviously, but will reassess next week.

      Is this a good move?

I feel many are being influenced by all these casuals pulling the trigger so early (myself included). Surely it's worth to wait until at least GW2, maybe even GW3 to start taking hits. For all we know, Fabregas could be transferred out of teams this time next week if he gets 2 or 3 points.

I feel as though I am finally being a smart FPL manager!

yeah but thats exactly the point as you can benefit a lot further down the road from having accrued that extra value. it happens every year that my main fantasy rival jumps on to early bandwagons and by january he can afford to have someone like silva instead of barkley. most beneficial is to have those early bandwagon players in year team from the start, which you're well set for. if you think that erikson will kill it next week (moreso than fab which is a toss up) then hold him. sometimes it does pay to keep the faith because afterall its the points that count. just in the first few weeks while casuals are still interested the market is volatile

i'm sure with leicester this week (seriously who gave chelsea such an easy start), fab will likely be close to 9.5 with the amount of bandwagon fantasy players on here. i'm backing hazard to be a gun and will hold eriksen for now. worse case i ship out mata for ramsey or sterling, no dramas

Ignoring the fact that prices will likely change, do you think that I am right to stick with my team as is for another GW and give players another chance to perform (i.e. Giroud). Then if they fail to produce drop Giroud for someone cheaper and upgrade Young.

      Krul (Murphy)

      Ramsey(leic)-Fabregas(eve)-Sterling(spurs)-Siggy(WBA)

I still think you should be waiting at least until after GW2 before jumping ship on players such as Mata and Hazard. Both proven performers, and I at least want to see Aguero play 70 minutes before considering him.

Kun will be considered for week 3. Not 2.

It's basically exactly what i'm doing Tina. -4 this week. -4 next. Only works if Haz doesnt drop mind

Bottom line is that i want Aguero...and i want him more than i want Mata and Haz. So that makes Fab an attractive back up.

I really HATE hits, but i think i'll be happier with this balance than i've currently got

[FYI think i'll lose Mata this week, then Haz next]

I have Terry. I have to lose Hazard in order to get Cesc.

Ben Davies is likely to be benched again isn't he? Or is Naughton's suspension likely to affect this? I'm tempted to swap him out for Chester or Vlaar.

Bear in mind that Naughton looks like going down 0.1, and chester's going up tonight

If Mata blanks in gw2 having dropped this week, I won't be able to change him as I already have Sterling and Sigurdsson

With that in mind, should I change him?

      Horrific GW1 for me (43pts)
      Team was:

      Foster
      Jones Terry Moore (LEI)
      Ramsey Mata Hazard Mutch
      Rooney(C) Dzeko Giroud

      Krul Duff Clyne Marney.

Already did Mutch->Siggy, any more suggestions for improvement?:)

No this is the team I had playing this GW, to illustrate why it went badly:p

Next GW I will play Krul and Clyne instead of Foster and Moore

Is it just me that's thinking Hazard > Fabregas and save a million
Looked far more dangerous last night
