We take out final glance back at Gameweek 2 this lunchtime. City’s forgotten forward and Tottenham’s form under the new man in charge come under discussion, whilst we also look at the need to afford our players the chance to find their feet before pressing the “transfer out” button.

The Player

Stevan Jovetic’s double at home to Liverpool brings the City forward into focus after last night’s win over the Merseysiders. There were concerns surrounding the Montenegro man’s pitch time as Sergio Aguero edged towards full fitness but he was once again handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko and displayed the type of deadly finishing that served up 27 goals, in addition to 12 assists, over his final two years in Italy with Fiorentina.

Despite scoring five times in pre-season, Jovetic was largely overlooked as the campaign got underway and sat in less than 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams for the encounter with Brendan Rodgers’ side. By the time the match finished, he’d leapt onto Fantasy radars with a two-goal salvo that earned his manager’s post-match praise and, with a home clash against travel-sick Stoke up next, seems poised for major investment.

Granted, as the campaign unfolds, there’s no doubt that Jovetic will succumb to his manager’s rotational whims but right now, the situation seems in his favour. With Alvaro Negredo injured, Aguero not yet 100% and Dzeko limping off with a leg problem last night, he certainly looks a strong contender for our three-man frontlines. At a time when many of the mid-price frontmen (Emmanuel Adebayor aside) have failed to convince, Jovetic, at just 7.9 in FPL, looks a very tempting route into an attack that racked up 101 goals in its way to the title last term.

The Team

A 4-0 demolition of QPR in Mauricio Pochettino’s first home match at the Tottenham helm underlined the Fantasy potential on offer at the north London club. The Argentine’s impact has been immediate since rolling up to the Lane and his high pressing approach is already reaping reward, offering Fantasy managers prospects right across the pitch.

Whilst the second half of last season saw Christian Eriksen as the sole option in the Spurs midfield, Pochettino’s arrival looks to have furthered our options in the centre of the park. Nacer Chadli managed a single goal last season and has already bettered that tally with a brace against Harry Redknapp’s side – priced at just 6.0 in FPL, the Belgian looks a real mid-price alternative if he can nail down a starting berth in the attacking midfield three. Erik Lamela’s pair of assists suggests he, too, could be set for a turnaround in fortunes, while Emmanuel Adebayor could be the pick of the mid-price forwards if he kicks on from his goal and assist against the R’s.

At the back, Spurs have been quick to hint at the resilience that helped Southampton earn 15 shut-outs under Pellegrini in 2013/14. Back-to-back goals from Eric Dier has ensured the summer signing earns most of the Fantasy attention as his ownership climbs past 10%, though it’s yet to be seen just where he stands in the pecking order once Pochettino has a fully-fit quota of defenders to choose from. Jan Vertonghen is a pricier option but if his manager’s magic touch can unlock the goal threat that saw him net five times in his debut season, the Belgian could be another Tottenham alternative arriving on our radars shortly.

The Talking Point

Jovetic’s double against Liverpool merely underlines the need to afford our squads a little more patience as the season gets up and running. For some, weeks of careful planning and preparation were thrown to one side after Gameweek 1, as more than 152,000 wildcards were wielded after just a single round of action.

After their win over Newcastle, City were poised for three home matches in four, yet Jovetic, as their form forward (and the only one with a full pre-season behind him), was cast aside by over 24,000 Fantasy managers after blanking at St James’ Park and suffered a drop in price. At such a favourable cost, the scramble is now on for his signature ahead of the Stoke clash, with over 76,000 already transferring him in.

In midfield, many lost patience with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard – two proven Premier League big-hitters. Offloaded by 94,000 FPL owners last week, Mata subsequently notched his seventh goal in eight league outings in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Hazard, meanwhile, was sold by nearly 50,000 managers ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester – bearing in mind the Belgian had scored 10 of his 14 strikes at the Bridge last season, there was something of an inevitability about his goal against The Foxes.

With player prices appearing to take longer to change in this season’s FPL game so far, there have been fewer fluctuations than ever in the market – essentially, this is allowing us the chance to stick to our guns and follow through on our long-term planning. Granted, while following the bandwagons, such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, can pay off handsomely, reining in our knee-jerk reactions and maintaining courage in our initial convictions can prove the wisest move.

Probably true, but with Sturridge being 11.5 (he WAS the top scoring forward after Suarez last year), Balotelli was always going to be priced high as well.

think sturridge is correct. his season was as good as van persie's seasons which made him 12.5 then 14mil, it just lacked the full 38 games

Dzeko-Jovetic Comparison. Put Aguero in there just in case you're still considering him, despite him looking unlikely to start. In my eyes, he definitely could still have a massive impact as a sub.

Nice. I actually hope Dzeko is ruled out so I can just take the hit for Jovetic and be done with it.

I have never particularly heeded preseason player talk but both Lamela and Jovetic were lauded before the season by their managers. Might need to start listening to the guys who actually know the players and pick the teams. Wonder if there are any other gems out there ready to be unearthed.

Sorry I just do not get that pricing.

Balotelli scored 14 goals and registered 6 assists in 30 games last season in Seria A (2,294 minutes played).

Dzeko registered 16 goals and 7 assists in 1986 minutes.

Bony registered 17 goals and 4 assists in 2469 minutes.

How the hell is Balotelli justified at 10 million coming from a weaker league with fewer goals than these two PL players?

Last season was Balotelli's worst, the season before that he single handedly carried the team.

Come on Somalion, Balotelli has a much bigger reputation than Dzeko and Bony do, and with Sturridge at 11.5, Balo was always going to be high as well.
I'm guessing the attacking nature of Liverpool has a part to play too.

      1. Somalion
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 10 months ago

Previous season his returns were 12 and 4 in 1146 minutes, that was much better but still struggling to see the valuation.

Plus, if we take that into account we can take into account his PL returns. 13 goals and 1 assist in 1300 minutes, 6 goals and 2 assists in 1090 minutes.

None of that supports his pricetag, last season's good run of form lends the strongest support but you can't base the price purely on that?

City are attacking, scored more goals than Pool last season so why is Dzeko not 10?

        Come at me IM 😉

I think it's based on him having the ability to get near a goal a game in an attacking side. Sturridge's price will also have had some inflating effect as well. Not sure his Man City stats are particularly relevant as he was a sub a LOT. Similar applies to Dzeko's price this season.

Whether he will be anything like that who knows, but I distinctly remember everyone scoffed at Sterling's price in preseason...

I can appreciate that certainly but surely, seeing as they seemed to price Costa based on last season mostly, they would have done the same?

That's my gripe, inconsistency. They based Costa on 1 season but they clearly must be basing Balo on both seasons which isn't fair.

To be fair, while looking lively, we're not far enough into the game yet to say whether 8.5 is good or not really. But I do take your point!

Yeah, weird. There's no reason at the mo to pick him ahead of Bony, Adebayor, Dzeko, etc. I'd've thought 8.5/9 but even then I'd say he was expensive.
I think they've got the forwards' pricing wrong this year, there are too few options between 6 and 8.5

Should Balotelli start banging in the goals, his 10M price will make him a cheaper [read: better] option than the more expensive FWDs. His price rules him out as a 'budget forward' but he certainly does have the pedigree to be a top EPL forward.

I for one will be keeping an eye on his this weekend.

The way I see it I can:

    1) Downgrade Ivan, gives me more cash to upgrade third striker. Very reluctant to do this though because he offers pts offensively and defensively and so he'll never be on the bench.
    2) Find a striker cheaper than 7 m. The cheaper they are, the more I can upgrade some of the 4.0's in my defence.

Is Jovetic captain material for this weekend (STO home)? If he is then i will likely bring him in for dzeko

Yeah he is. Nailed on to start. United look bad. Costa has a tough away game. Ramsey is an option but mids are always a risk

Afternoon all! So with Eto'o looking set to join Everton, could Lukaku's game time be affected in terms of him being rested/rotated, or would Lukaku still be their go-to striker for most games?

My lessons learned for the season so far...

Lesson 1 - don't let your opinions be swayed by Scout Picks!
Lesson 2 - act quickly to correct obvious errors.
Lesson 3 - create your own bandwagons

Lesson 1 - All pre-season I had Siggy and a cheap 4.5 defender (who didn't play) with zero in the bank (that's a mistake too). When Scout Picks arrived for GW1 I transferred out the cheap defender and Siggy and transferred in Caulker and Mutch. After Sunday games I stood around 2.2m. After Monday (Chelsea game) I finished the gameweek around 920k. My worst ever start in FPL!

Lesson 2 - I immediately corrected my GW1 error - cost 4 points - transferred out Caulker and Mutch and transferred in Siggy (before his price rise) and Amat. I finished GW2 around 109k.

Lesson 3 - After the Man City thrashing of Liverpool I transferred out Coutnho and Rooney and bought Chadli and Aguero (cost 4 points). That's my bandwagon prediction for this week!

I like the idea of 'bandwagon prediction'.

With all the price changes sites down this week, that could be wise attempt.

A two parter for you guys

What to do you think is more important CS points for your Defenders and Goalkeepers

    or

Goal and Assist points for your Midfielders and Forwards

and is okay for 1GW only to sacrifice a potential low points tally from your Defenders to get a high points tally from your Attackers

    Any ideas would be welcomed

    TIA

Please can someone be so kind to give some guidance? How is this?

    Krul
    Rose - Ivanovic - Dummett
    Sterling - Ramsey - Siggy - Fabregas
    Aguero - Jovetic - Costa

    Subs : Elliot / Wisdom / Bartley / Wanyama

    Any Ideas People

    2 Current GK's

Bergovic (Krul) (Krul to be used GW3)

Looking at removing Bergovic for a 4.5 mill GK!

    Swap or Keep?

I imagine this will be a popular switch but any reason why I shouldn't be using my FT for Bojan > Jovetic today? Bojan to drop tonight I believe, any reason to hold back?

Due to Balotellis ridiculous price this is what I'm probably going to roll with. Anything I should change in this lot.

    Krul (Elliott)
    Jones, Clyne, Taylor, (Wisdom, PVA)
    Sterling, Ramsey, Fabregas, Sigurdsson, (Cattermole)
    Aguero, Adebayor, Rooney

Looks good to me. I might suggest downgrading Jones and doing Fab -> Haz but that's personal preference.
