Our Friday evening members regular, analysing the armband options in the Gameweek ahead, arrives once again. We continue with a three-part approach, taking in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Gameweek poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

The Captain Poll

For the first time this term, the Captain Poll is less conclusive as four teams are represented in the top five places. Wayne Rooney takes top spot for the second time in three Gameweeks – despite last week’s blank at Sunderland, the United man has received over 36% of the votes cast as Louis van Gaal’s side make their way to promoted Burnley. Team-mate Juan Mata earns just over 3% of votes by comparison, though he has scored seven times in his last eight league appearances.

City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero are also prevalent in our armband thoughts. After bagging a brace against Liverpool – and, crucially, starting both matches so far – Jovetic is narrowly ahead of the Argentine by 14% to 10%. Aguero’s two goals in just 31 minutes off the bench sums up his points potential, though, and there’s a feeling he could run riot against Stoke if let off the leash from the first whistle. Given how protective Manuel Pellegrini has been so far, there’s no doubt Aguero is the riskier of the two but he certainly has the ability to deliver if afforded the pitch time by his manager.

Aaron Ramsey splits the City pair in third spot. Suspended for Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Besiktas, he’ll be fully refreshed as the Gunners roll up to Leicester on Sunday and is looking to get on the scoresheet for the third successive Gameweek.

Gylfi Sigurdsson sits fifth in the Poll after picking up the points in both his appearances so far. With a home clash against West Brom on the horizon, Garry Monk’s side will be looking to the playmaker to lead them to a third successive win – Sigurdsson has convinced 7% of backers to hand him the armband against the Baggies.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa’s minutes this weekend, few look likely to opt for a Chelsea player as their Gameweek 3 captain – Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard have been selected by 2% and 1% respectively. Similarly, faith in Tottenham and Liverpool’s attackers seems limited as the pair go head-to-head at the Lane – Erik Lamela leads the way from our contenders with 1% of votes, suggesting the Argentine, along with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling, could be a real left-field armband pick this weekend if Sunday’s encounter can serve up the goals.

            see my post

            Food for thought

Striker Diego Costa has had two shots on target this season and scored with both
Chelsea have failed to score on four of their last six visits to Goodison Park in the league.
Everton have won four of their last five Premier League home games against Chelsea. Since the 2009-10 season, only Manchester City have beaten Chelsea more during that period with five victories.

Manchester City have won seven successive league games at home to Stoke, including all six previous encounters in the Premier League without conceding a goal
They have scored twice or more in each of their last 10 league matches.
Manuel Pellegrini's side scored 63 league goals at home last season, more than 15 of the 20 Premier League clubs managed in total.

With my ft I'm confident of doing Costa to Jovetic.

Costa is a poacher, he only needs one chance to score. He is playing for a great team with great service, and will score steadily all season.

I am keeping him as I already have Aguero and slapping the armband on him.

It's a waste, a bloody waste. Means I have no FTs over the break, which is practically criminal.

Alternative is risking not going with Jovetic and having two FTs.

Doesnt convince me. Mourinho comments tell me that if he is fit he will play or be benched. If not he wont travel.

But his training session went well and he is fit. It's a case of if he starts or is benched now, and is don't see why he would rest him for an important fixture when he can now have a two week break.

Mourinho said that if Costa looked positive in training that he would play at Everton, or be on the bench.

He trained well, for the full session and had no issues. I cannot see any reason now why he won't play.

      See the Chelsea website

      http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2014/08/mourinho-press-conference-29th-august.html

‘In this moment I can’t say much,’ reported Mourinho before training started. ‘We are trying everything for him to play tomorrow. He didn’t train for the last two days, but today is the last day and we must make a decision to select him or not.

‘He has to try a light training session to see if the reaction is positive. If it is we take him to Everton to play or be on the bench; if the reaction is not positive today then obviously we don’t select him. Let's see.'

Essentially, Mourinho said if he is fit enough, he can start. He had no problems in the session today so I don't see what he wouldn't start.

It's all turned into a right load of nonsense. He's injured, he may play off bench if he trains well, he's fit, he may get a cameo, he won't be risked, it's an international bluff, his head is partially severed......in a nutshell. I sold cos I don't like uncertainty and wanted city coverage.

You should upgrade Diouf soon. Your immediate concern is Costa right? He might play 30-60min. Enough time to get on the scoresheet but if you not confident, then Costa>Ade/Jovetic and upgrade Diouf to Jovetic/Ade with a free transfer next GW.

This may be a pointless post but Jovetic dropped to 7.9 last weekend meaning several who had him got rid of him just because he blanked in week one. We all know how he did after that. So dont be too reactionary in the early game weeks. Which is why I am keeping Eriksen for another week.

Also if you want to go with Jovetic or Aguero as captain rather than Rooney then take the risk rather than playing it safe. Its August. There will be plenty of months to play it safe without doing it this early as well. Go for it.

wish there was a way to use the stats tables to show Adebayor's output when a new manager has taken over/New club... he is always the shizz for the first 10 gw's... #wishihadstatstobackitup

I've to take a -4 for this, but:

    A) Costa --> Jovetic with £4.5m ITB for next week

    B) Costa --> Aguero with £0.6m ITB for next week

    Thoughts?
I can get any striker so if any alternatives would be good please tell!
(Btw I've no City players ATM)

So the odds are City will win 2-0/3-0 tomorrow.

Yes Jovetic is a good option but so are Aguero, Dzeko, Yaya, Silva, Nasri, Navas

Whereas Chelsea much of the action goes through Costa

Think I'm gonna stick with Costa, worst that's gonna happen is I'll get Naismith off the bench

City could easily score more than that

yes but Mou play's defensively in the harder games. likely 1 goal for chelsea imo

    Choose one:

    A) Keep Diego Costa;
    B) Sell Diego Costa, buy Jovetic and upgrade Diouf to Adebayor.

Sorry to ask this again guys but need some help as I just can't decide.

    My options are:

    A) Costa>Jovetic + Ince>Eriksen (only if Eriksen drops tonight so bit risky)
    B) Costa>Ade + Ince>Tadic

I already have Nasri which covers City a bit I suppose even though his returns are never that great but generally if its a high scoring game he gets in on the points.

don't think "cover" really works in an attacking sense
      only defensive cover works imo

Yeah I agree to a certain extent but the way City play any one attacker can get in on the action if you know what I mean?

Selling Kolarov before a home game against Stoke is borderline illegal.
