Angel di Maria steers United to their first win of the season with a goal and assist against QPR. Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera mirror the Argentine’s returns, while Juan Mata is also on the scoresheet in an emphatic 4-0 demolition.

Di Maria Dazzles on Home Bow
Handed a berth on the left of a midfield diamond, the Argentine leapt to Fantasy managers’ attention with a pivotal role in yesterday’s rout. After somewhat fortuitously opening the scoring with a free-kick, Di Maria teed up Juan Mata for the hosts’ fourth and turned in a performance that is set to get the bandwagon rolling ahead of next week’s trip to Leicester. Indeed, with home matches against West Ham and Everton allied with a trip to West Brom in the next four, some may even be contemplating a shift to 3-5-2 in order to accommodate the Argentine in their starting line-ups.

Rooney Back in the Points
While Robin van Persie blanked once again, the England star replicated Di Maria with a goal and assist against the R’s. Handed a role alongside the Dutchman, Rooney certainly staked a claim to continue in the advanced role – certainly, on current form, there’d be no real surprise if Van Persie dropped out to accommodate Radamel Falcao.

Nonetheless, Van Gaal’s decision to sub off Juan Mata, despite the Spaniard netting for the second time this term, resulted in a change of position for Rooney, who tucked in behind the front two. There’s no doubt such a scenario would prove detrimental to both Rooney and Mata, and bearing in mind the Colombian only failed to start due to jet lag, there are still many question marks surrounding United’s attack right now.

Herrera Off the Mark
Judging by yesterday’s display, the Spaniard may yet prove to be a legitimate Fantasy option for the season ahead. Herrera had been written off as a source of points due to a deep-lying role but the arrival of Daley Blind allowed him to shift to the right of the midfield diamond against the R’s and serve up a goal and assist. At just 7.3 in FPL, Herrera certainly looks worth monitoring if he can continue in the same role.

Van Gaal Moves to Four at the Back
The United boss admitted pre-match his decision to opt for a four-man defence was mainly down to injuries. With the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling sidelined and Luke Shaw fit enough only for the bench, Van Gaal was forced to field Tyler Blackett at centre-half, with Marcos Rojo covering on the left. While a second consecutive clean sheet is promising, it’s worth bearing in mind United have played against promoted opposition in those last couple of matches – with uncertainty still surrounding their first-choice personnel at the back, though, many may opt against investing in the Red Devils’ defence for now.

The post above was referring to which 3 of my defenders to play this week:
        Ivan - Caulk - Clyne - VAN - Wisdom.

Is: Caulker - Clyne - Van and benching Ivan madness?

On Moreno but not convinced that they will keep many CS' s

Hammers usually come good defensively. Villa started well, tricky fixtures for a few. United could do well keeping ball rather than a great defence. Gunners usually solid enough. Everton defence will get you nice amount of CS.

It will be interesting to see who makes way in the United team once Falcao is ready to start (next weekend?)

    Mata - scoring goals recently

Rooney - captain and back on form

RVP - Van Gaal's Dutch favourite

    Falcao - massive new signing

You would think so, but will Van Gaal want to give him more chance to play himslef back to full match fitness and form? He knows what RVP is capable of.

I'm thinking the substitution and how they finished is an indication to LVG's plans, despite RVP's poor performance.

            • 15 Years
            11 years, 5 months ago

Although, weren't they actually better before the substituton, i.e. with Rooney up front and Mata in the hole?

            1. A.T
              • 15 Years
              11 years, 5 months ago

I'm not thinking in terms of one performance though. Rooney and Falcao for reasons you've stated so it's between Rvp and Mata. Obviously if Mata now consistently outperforms Rvp he'll play but I'm guessing LVG wants it to be Rvp if possible.

    2. Jarvis

    4. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years
      11 years, 5 months ago

General consensus amongst the press is that it will be Mata - based primarily on the fact that, as you say, RVP is a LVG favourite. I think Roonety is the safest but he will be rested from time to time, and he will spend his fair share of time in the no. 10 role. But that might not necessarily be bad for his owners.

      1. GREENDREAMS11
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 5 months ago

United have hardly any fixtures this year so there will be no need to rest Rooney, even LVG must realise that Van Persie is looking of it and has been for quite some time.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 16 Years
          11 years, 5 months ago

It's not really for rest, though. It'll be because LVG wants to keep everyone happy.

Agree re Rooney and that's why I am quite happy to keep him in both my FF teams (FPL and TFF). If Mata starts to look nailed on I think he might actually be a better option that Di Maria

Mata still didn't create anything. He looked great because he was making passes in the middle third and getting forward and on the end of chances. MU have plenty of guys who can do that. Mata still needs to show he can create chances in the final third, oh and defend every now and then.

I think the 4.5m price tag is still pretty good. I feel he will score eventually, it'll just be a matter of how long you can last with him. I guess he's already provided us with an assist in GW1.

My biggest worry atm is Caulker, he's the same deal but 0.5m more, playing for QPR (boo!) and is dropping in price... Yet there's still this dilemma of him having a serious ability to score..

So many players i don't like in my team though:

            Krul/Rio/Terry/Wisdom/Haz/Dzeko

Have missed the terry drop and possible ADM wagon allready, so thinking I must just stay calm and see how close i can get to my ideal team by GW 8 without WC.

      Shawcross is 5.6

      Lovren/ Moreno

      Arg/Clyne

      Clichy against tuff opp.

Evans rather than Blackett--he's nailed on.

    Bego (Elliot)

    Terry, Clyne, Colo (Hutton, Wisdom)

    Siggy, Fab, Ramsey, Sterling (Marney)

    Costa, Ade, Rooney

    1FT & 0.3m ITB

I wasn't planning on making any transfers this week, but I've been flirting with the idea of Terry & Ade to Ivan and Pelle for -4. Thoughts?

Yeah it's Terry giving me the headache and I can't afford Ivan without dropping some value elsewhere - probably hold out for this week at least since no matter how you look it both Terry and Ivan both have city this week so it'd be a bit sideways - at least this week.

If you're team's strong enough to use a your one transfer this week on a starting Chelsea defender who's got the ability to score the odd goal...
      I'm very envious sir.
