Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli grab the goals as Liverpool narrowly defeat Ludogorets. Jack Wilshere picks up an ankle problem in Arsenal’s defeat in Dortmund. Jordi Amat is out for six weeks for Swansea, Gus Poyet hopes new boy Sebastian Coates can challenge for a starting role in defence, while Newcastle’s young winger Rolando Aarons is out until November with a hamstring injury.

Reds Scrape a Late Win

Brendan Rodgers made just one alteration from the XI that started last weekend’s home loss to Villa, with Raheem Sterling coming in for the suspended Lazar Markovic for the visit of Bulgarian side Ludogorets. Mario Balotelli notched his first goal for the Merseysiders, with attacking left-back Alberto Moreno earning an assist, before Steven Gerrard slotted home a last-gasp spot-kick to ensure Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with a win.

The Scout Says: They may have picked up the three points but Liverpool did little to convince Fantasy managers after serving up another lethargic display. With Daniel Sturridge still sidelined, Sterling and Adam Lallana flanked Balotelli in a front three before Rodgers opted for a midfield diamond on 67 minutes, introducing Fabio Borini alongside his compatriot up front, with Sterling tucked in behind the strikers. The domestic schedule remains very much in Liverpool’s favour right now – a trip to West Ham precedes three home fixtures (EVE, WBA, HUL) and a visit to QPR in the subsequent four – and Sterling’s 46% ownership will be a lot more confident if his manager retains the teenager in a central role as the Reds look to bounce back from last week’s loss to Villa.

Gunners Slump to Dortmund Defeat

Arsenal were even less impressive last night after losing 2-0 to Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund. Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that drew with City – Kieran Gibbs replaced Nacho Monreal at left-back, Mikel Arteta was selected in front of the back-four after Mathieu Flamini picked up a minor thigh problem, while youngster Hector Bellerin came in for the injured Mathieu Debuchy, with Callum Chambers fit enough only for the bench after a bout of tonsillitis.

The Scout Says: The Gunners managed just a single shot on target all evening and Danny Welbeck – who was snapped up by 237,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers in the last Gameweek – is clearly yet to find his feet as the lone striker. From a Fantasy perspective, owners of Aaron Ramey and Alexis Sanchez can breathe easy after both avoided injury, though Wenger confirmed after the match that Jack Wilshere has “turned an ankle” and is set for scans. Arsenal now pay visit to a Villa side defence this weekend that have conceded just one goal to date, and with matches against Spurs and Chelsea to follow, they have a tough task to get their domestic campaign up and running again.

Amat Blow for Swans

The central defender has been ruled out for up to six weeks with the knee injury sustained during Saturday’s loss to Chelsea.

The Scout Says: Amat’s stint on the sidelines allows Garry Monk the chance to hand new signing Federico Fernandez his first start of the season for next weekend’s home clash with Southampton. The Spaniard had started all four league fixtures alongside Ashley Williams but was subbed off at the break in the 4-2 weekend defeat. With the upcoming fixtures fairly decent for the Welsh club (SOU, sun, NEW, sto, LEI), Monk will be optimistic of bouncing back from their first loss of the new campaign. From a Fantasy perspective, though, Amat’s injury deprives us of another 4.5 price starting option, though – with Fernandez priced at 5.0, Neil Taylor is now the only budget alternative on offer at the Liberty.

Poyet Talks Up Coates’ Prospects

The Sunderland boss is optimistic that his loan signing from Liverpool could soon be ready to battle for a place in the heart of the back-four:

“I know Sebber, I recommended him to England in the beginning when he came to Liverpool. He was a 6ft 3in centre-half, calm on the ball and with aggression. He’s a good player. Slowly, he’s going to have to start competing with Wes and John and when he has the chance to play in any game – even in the cup – he needs to perform. I think it’s a great chance for him as well and a great challenge. We needed a centre-half too, so it works both ways in helping each other.”

The Scout Says: Having failed to pick up a clean sheet in their first four fixtures, the Black Cats have struggled to justify our defensive investment thus far. Sunderland ended the previous campaign strongly and chalked up a trio of shut outs in the final four matches, but despite keeping faith in Wes Brown and John O’Shea, Poyet’s defence has been breached every time. At just 4.5 in FPL, Coates could be one to consider if he can nail down a starting berth, though for now, Patrick van Aanholt and Vito Mannone look the most appealing options ahead of a schedule that pits the Wearsiders against Burnley, Swansea, Stoke and Southampton in the next four Gameweeks.

Aarons Sidelined for Newcastle

Under-fire Magpies boss Alan Pardew was dealt more bad news yesterday after receiving confirmation that young winger Rolando Aarons could be out until November with a hamstring injury.

The Scout Says: Aaron’s impact off the bench in Gameweek 3 was the one bright note in the Tyneside team’s recent toils. Handed just 24 minutes as a second-half sub against Palace, the youngster served up a goal and assist in the 3-3 draw with a display that suggested he could be set to win a regular role for Newcastle. Having picked up the problem prior to last week’s hammering at Southampton, his absence – allied with Siem de Jong’s long-term thigh injury – will force Pardew to rely on Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko alongside Remy Cabella in the attacking midfield three. Given that the Palace encounter was the only match in which the Magpies have scored in this season, faith in their attacking assets could barely be any lower.

Foster Playing Through Pain Barrier

The West Brom number one has admitted he’s still struggling with a thumb injury picked up on England duty recently.

“I am managing it pretty well and getting some injections in it to kill the pain, so it’s fine. It is the way it is and I just have to hope it heals itself. I’m hopeful it will and the doctors are as well so that’s that. It’s OK. There was a little bit of bone that I chipped off it in training, which is a little bit unfortunate. I have been trying to inject it and manage it a little bit.”

The Scout Says: Given that the Baggies have conceded at least twice in three of their four matches under Alan Irvine, it’s fair to say few, if any, Fantasy managers are interested in their defence. Foster’s injury is one to monitor, though – if he fails to properly recover and opt to go under the knife, it would bring Boaz Myhill into contention as a 4.0 stopper, though defensive returns admittedly look far from likely right now, with Spurs, Liverpool and United in the next four.

If fernando and yaya are fit, I do see Jose starting with Ramirez and Matic in DM to shield defence, push Fab up to the hole. They're gonna need to take every chance they have. Cesc will be the one to find the spaces.

      Not a Cesc owner btw.

I have 2FTs so chance to do some work on my team; currently I have

    Krul (Elliot)
    Terry Chambers Clyne (Wisdom Kelly)
    Sterling Fab Ramsey Sigi (Albrighton)
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

Which option would you go for:

    A Terry & Dzeko to Baines & Pelle (343)
B Terry, Albrighton & Dzeko to Duff (other sub 5m defender), Di Maria, Jutkiewicz (play 352)

B will obviously be a 4 point hit

First year just outside top 5000 having after last weeks post not took a hit and kept Jones and Sturridge... I'm thinking of going Adebayor and getting rid of Sturridge and leaving 2.8 in bank..is this a nieve tactic?? My current mob is..............

    Krul(Elliott)
    Kompany Chester Bertrand (Moore P.Jones)
    Eriksen Ramsey Sigurdsson Henderson (Marney)
    Sturridge D Costa Rooney

What do people think of Manquillo's prospects? He looks much better right back than Glen Johnson from the little I have seen, good going forward (won the penalty and the cross he put on Borini's head was a beaut). He could be a good shout at 5.0

I think they've been unlucky. 5th tighest defence in terms of chances conceded.

Villa had 1 shot on target out of 7 attempts
Hull had 2 shots on target out of 9 attempts
City - we know what happened there
Leicester had one shot on target out of 8 attempts

        There you are
Seen your question about doubling up defence earlier.
Not an deeply scientific research but last year I worked it out based on top eight teams up to xmas period. To see if WC was worth doing it.
I took each regular defender from these teams and worked out the points with another from that team in comparison to all others in or around that price range, took into account auto subs etc.
Other than the odd 3 or 4 game run, there was only really 2 pairings that gave you higher return from same team than one from two teams. Coleman and jags, merts n kos I think.
So for me you would need to get the correct pair early and stick with them.
I would also take into account that last year baps were spread out amongst defenders more than this year, so the chances of sharing them in same team are reduced.

Thanks a lot JT, really appreciate the advice! Already have Clyne. Will have to make up my mind about who to get between Bertrand and Chambers, if Chester doesn't play this week.

So that is a no from you then? Or would you still go ahead and take the risk? Southampton have conceded the 2nd least number of shots inside the box which makes me think that I might end up taking the risk. But then on the other hand, Chambers is the cheaper and the safer option.

          1. JT's Dog
            11 years, 10 months ago

My instinct is to spread the chances.
Even with the two successful pairs there was little points difference.
I think the points will be less this year due to baps not being spread out so widelyAlso if I am correct about those pairings then it is more goals that gained them advantage last year. So you are really looking to get the defenders who get most goals. Not sure if Southampton will be that team

Lamela is questionable. Don't see a problem with no Rooney or ADM. Complete bandwagon jumping going on towards United players at the moment. Beat the worst team in the league last week.I'll wait for a little more of a pattern. Spurs hammered the same team in similar style and went out the next week and got destroyed by Liverpool.

Lets agree to disagree here 🙂

Kun game time is questionable, not worth for that price. Manu is finding their rythm and they have no EU games

Yeah I will probably switch Kun to another forward maybe Rooney as City play Chelsea in the current gameweek and leave the funds to transfer him in next week depending on how things look at that stage.

NEED HELP ON MY WC TEAM!!!!

    Krul (foster)
Bertand- Evans - duff (Moore) (PVA)
    Ramsey- siggy-di Maria- chadli-sterling/fabergras
    Costa-rooney/ augero(Naismith)

Can't decide between sterling and fab
Can't decide between Rooney and augero
And I'm still lost about what defenders to pick

Same problems, I went with Sterling based on liverpool's easy upcoming fixtures, and aguero because jovetich is injured and rooney will be playing a more holding midfield role which means less goals.

Chadli is a way better choice than Eriksen trust me!

          He's not a member.... 🙂

Basically, Eriksen is more creative and has had more shots. Chadli's shots are better(closer to goal) but Eriksen ain't far behind. + He has set pieces.

The key stat here is the Chadli has the most shots in the box for all midfielders in the game 😯

and double of number the shots inside the box than Eriksen

He's also been playing ahead of Ade in recent games

They've all been playing around each others' positions lately. Eriksen further forward than Chadli in GW4. 🙂

this.. and will likely continue that since of all the 3 he is the only one who cant play out wide while the other two can. finally pochettino sees it!

Chadli's average position is higher up than Eriksen's 😛

Then you can sort by penalty area touches, double than the ones of Eriksen

Equal shot attempts, but yet again Chadli had more shots inside the box

For 2 million less, you get the better FPL player 🙂

        Not way better.
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/6585/

See Chances created, touches in the final third(something you yourself talk up), goal attempts and then factor in his set pieces.

agreed.. i prefer Eriksen's stats. chadli would obviously have more touched in the box. not that kind of a player

Touches inside the final third are better for defenders imo. Here you need to see the touches in the penalty area which are significantly higher than Eriksen, and so are the number of shots taken inside the box!

Eriksen might get you an assist here or there, but Chadli is the go to man for me, especially at a price almost 2.0 million less than Eriksen's

          1. Valar(Keith)

Trust me.. it was the system. Chadli was much more suited to it from the start while Eriksen has grown into being suited to it of late. Eriksen gonna do really well. Having watched every spurs game Chadli is OK.. not great. while eriksen is pure class

It's not the gulf in class between players that matters in FPL, for example, a tap in would get you the same points as a screamer. The point I'm trying to make here, is that Chadli in every game so far, has been better positioned to take those chances than Eriksen. And hence, it is no surprise that he has outscored him heavily up till now

Stats slightly skewed cause Eriksen was being forced out onto the wing and he struggled the most to adjust to Pochettino's system.. and he looked totally out of it cause of it. back in the hole on saturday and looks like he'll stay there considerin the spurs attack looked good. Also on set pieces. dont let a few weeks of stats make ur mind up 🙂

This. I remember Hazard started off last season pretty poorly too. I can see Eriksen turning it on from here. Spurs hopes rest on his form to a large extent.
