As always, there are plenty of situations for us to monitor for the upcoming Gameweek. This week’s Scout Mission has an eye on the form of Arsenal’s new frontman, Tottenham’s midfield, Louis van Gaal’s frontline options and the battle of the mid-price prospects as Swansea and Southampton go head-to-head at the Liberty.

Welbeck vs the Villa defence…
As strange as it may seem, Fantasy managers will be eyeing up both the Arsenal striker and Villa’s defensive assets ahead of the encounter at Villa Park. Should we see a second consecutive blank for Welbeck, those Fantasy managers who swooped early for the Gunners’ deadline day signing may begin to question his acquisition – all the more so if fellow mid-price forward Graziano Pelle can deliver once again at the weekend. Meanwhile, should Paul Lambert’s side manage another unlikely shut-out against a big side, investment in Alan Hutton will surely be on the up – the full back has already risen to a price of 4.1 this season but still looks excellent value for a guaranteed starter in a rearguard with just a single goal conceded thus far.

Burnley’s opportunity to convince…
Sean Dyche’s men have, up until this point, suggested that they can live at this level, but Saturday’s meeting with Sunderland is the first time they will have faced opponents at Turf Moor that give them the opportunity for three points. Clean sheets in their previous two matches have ensured that The Clarets’ budget defensive options are receiving plenty of interest right now, and this weekend’s encounter could see Michael Duff continue his rise to prominence, as well as offer Kieran Tripper the opportunity to show his potential. However, the Black Cats fixture may also be the first time Burnley’s attacking targets creep on to our radars – Scott Arfield will be hoping to add to his opening weekend goal against Chelsea, whilst the 4.9 priced Lukas Jutkiewicz will need to step up in the absence of fellow forward Danny Ings.

The mid-price showdown at the Liberty…
Two attractive and flourishing teams collide in South Wales, as Garry Monk’s Swansea host Ronald Koeman’s on-song Southampton. A host of mid-price talent is set to be on show, then, with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dusan Tadic expected to pull the strings in midfield, whilst Graziano Pelle’s growing band of owners will be optimistic that the Italian striker can add to his tally of three goals in his past two appearances. Early form would indicate that the Swans are favourites in Saturday afternoon’s clash, but with seven goals scored and only one conceded in their past two fixtures, Southampton are rapidly emerging as the team to back. The Saints also boast an obliging run of opponents to come after this weekend (QPR, tot, SUN, STO, hul, LEI), and another impressive showing against the Swans would see their assets begin to scale the summit of our Watchlist for Gameweek 6.

Downing vs Sterling…
No really. It may seem a mismatch, but West Ham have played their best football through Stewart Downing so far this campaign. The 5.5-priced midfielder has already accrued 22 points, and is currently rivaling some of the more fancied Fantasy talent in terms of goal threat and creativity thus far. One such player would of course be Raheem Sterling, whose ownership outweighs Downing’s by a whopping 44%, and the youngster looks poised for a return to the starting XI for Saturday evening’s encounter after finding himself on the bench in Liverpool’s loss the Villa last time out. We’ll certainly be watching carefully to see how these two match up, and whether Downing can continue to thrive as a differential in the Hammers’ more enterprising lineup.

More answers from United…
The QPR victory was a showcase but, such was the fragility of the opponent, we didn’t really see Louis Van Gaal’s new United side stretched. The visit to Leicester certainly will, however, with the Foxes having already chalked up two wins and a draw despite their tough opening schedule. Fantasy managers will be offered the chance to further assess Juan Mata’s role in midfield and how Radamel Falcao will be squeezed into the lineup, whilst another impactful display from Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria will ensure their popularity continues to mount. Meanwhile, in defence, questions marks still remain over whether Van Gaal will be able to switch to three at the back again – Luke Shaw had a 45-minute run out for United’s Under-21 side on Monday night, and could conceivably be handed the left wing back role on Sunday afternoon, allowing Marcus Rojo, Jonny Evans and Tyler Blackett to fill the central berths should their manager switch formation.

Chadli’s challenge to see off Eriksen and Lamela…
Nacer Chadli is offering outstanding value for his 6.1 price tag right now and, having scored three times and fired more close-range attempts than any midfielder, the upturn in interest is understandable. Christian Eriksen’s role as the middle man in the attacking midfield three looks promising, though – after grabbing his first goal of the campaign in Gameweek 4, the Dane’s form is starting to pick up and with a chance created every 37.1 minutes this season, his underlying creative stats suggest that more attacking returns are on the horizon. With Spurs facing a West Brom side that have conceded five in their last two fixtures, all three midfielders will be optimistic of having a say this weekend, though us Fantasy managers will be keen to see one emerge as the elite option in the next few Gameweeks.

A test of Warnock’s philosophy…
The Crystal Palace boss has many pacey weapons at his disposal for Sunday’s trip to Goodison, though it remains to be seen whether he will he go on the attack or show caution and pack the midfield. If it is indeed the former, goals could be on the cards, and Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie could prove explosive options for managers hunting for midfielders in the mid-to-lower price bracket.

Pellegrini’s shift to 4-5-1…
We saw it at Arsenal and in Munich last night, but will the Chilean stick with his new formation when City welcome Chelsea in Sunday afternoon’s table-topping showdown? With three goals to his name already this season, and having only appeared as a second half substitute in last night’s match, Sergio Aguero seems certain to start at the weekend, meaning that Edin Dzeko would be resigned to the bench yet again if Pellegrini rolls out a lone striker system. However, with Chelsea struggling defensively right now, the City boss could feasibly look to take on the Blues’ rearguard by lining up with two forwards, which would suggest that the 4-5-1 formation is only for certain opponents. If not, however, it’s clear that the 12.1 valued Aguero will stand out as the only feasible source of attacking points in their frontline whilst fit.

Why do people think Falcao will be on the bench this weekend again?

Considering LVG bought him and didn't buy Mata I think the wee Spainard will get the chop again. Feel bad for him, what a great player gettimg messed around by arseholes egos.

This season he has looked lacklustre in that role. Key pass/shots stats are poor. Fair enough he's got two goals but I'm judging him on his all round play.

RVP and Falcao won't work. Having two cherry-pickets in the side never does. Mata will start.

I think he'll get the first 60 mins. 30 min sub, 60 min start and then a few 75+ mins - that seems to be the standard plan for bringing a player up to speed.

Personally I think it would be detrimental to drop RvP. Others may disagree but he just needs a goal or two to get him back to his oldself. Not sure what's up with him at the minute, he's usually a very confident player.

I think you're right. I don't think he'll be consigned to the bench long term - I think LVG will chop and change - as is normal with Man Utd who very rarely keep the same team 2 games running. But I think if it's confidence he needs it's better to give him that chance in front of his own fans.

(United fan):Highly doubt he will start. No reason to rush him, coming off a long-term injury.
I think he will start with the same front six as QPR>

He's losing his pace and his general control of the game RVP thrives when the ball gets played mainly because he spearheads the attack e.g. final season of SAF when RVP was lone striker

For his impending return. Somebody else could have picked him up. You pick one player per round who is then allocated to your team. Hence, why I have him due to his FF prospects.

Tough call too be fair, might end up being the sensible thing to bench fabregas but doesn't seem logical. Best advise I can offer is tadic. I have a feeling he could be a silva type owner. Looks great on the ball but is often the assister of the assister (I currently own him miind).

Defence: Wouldn't play Azpili would rather have Ivan has a knack of scoring and as a defender will get the clean sheet points. Chester- Hull have conceded in every game so far and Clyne or Bertrand would be a much better option. Wisdom? the WBA team that has lost 3 and drew 1 would rather have Chambers now that Debuchy is injured and keep Moore and PVA (Y)

Also swap Mata for a big name like ADM who will exert much more influence on the game and will probably score more goals then Mata also Mata looks like the player that will get sacrificed for Falcao or get someone budget friendly like Chadli/Zaha who could potentially rack up some good points on the cheap

        Ilicic maybe ?

And Gorosito - Slovan, not sure about points, but should start every match and is 4.0, they could be strong at home against Sparta and YB Bern.

Tzavellas - PAOK, they are a decent team.

Von Bergen - YB Bern , Swiss national team starter.

Anyone wondering about the slow rises i wouldn't worry.

We could afford pretty decent teams from the start and the consistent falls means your purchasing power will in fact improve over time.

For example, right now you can have United Arsenal Spurs defence for 5.3m, 4.5m and 5.0m respectively - not bad.

    Hi All

Ok this is my first season playing FPL.

Here is my team for week 5, and I need your help?

Defenders: Dier, Shawcross,Clyne in team, Vlaar and Ivanovic bench
    Midfield:Fab,Siggy,chadli,sterling,ramsey none on bench
Forwards: Adebayor,Costa and Naismith on bench.

Do I need to make a transfer this week?
Chadli for Scneider as Southampton has e few easy fixtures ahead
    or adebayor for Pelle?

    Please help?

Play Ivan for a start!! Would have him over clyne personally.
      Midfield looks good.
      Can't argue with naismith bench.
Save transfer. I'd be tempted to captain adebayor.

Ade for Pelle makes sense but I'd maybe wait until after he's played WBA. Only maybe though, pull the trigger if your finger's itchy.

Chadli is on form at the moment. So is Morgan but Chadli plays a more attacking role and I'd rather have Pelle for the upcoming fixtures.

Just a random musing on Aguero

I saw plenty of people last night arguing that he should be avoided due to his injury record, and the fact that Pelle saw fit to bench him away at Bayern. Personally I find this to be a ludicrous idea

Jose said today that Costa can only play 1 game a week and he was also benched last night.

Applying the Aguero logic, coupled with Costa twice being rated doubtful already this season this season shouldn't you also stay away from Costa?

My take on it is this, last season Pelle would play Kun for 3-4 games, then he'd get injured and miss 4-6 weeks, before he came back and play another 3-4 etc. This meant that he was probably only fit for around 10-20 % of City's games last season. Maybe, just maybe Pelle has learnt from that and is following the Costa route with Aguero, meaning that Kun could play 50% of City's games. Hardly ideal, but it's better than 10-20 %.

Of course there is no guarantee that all of Kun's rests will come in the CL (it will surely depend on how the fixtures fall), but the same could be said of Costa. To me, both are worth the risk of an odd rest if this continues.

    1. Sess!
      • 15 Years
      11 years, 5 months ago

The worry with kun though is him regularly getting withdrawn around the hour mark. Lowers his potential points ceiling. Still though when he's on the pitch he'll always score goals. I personally don't think the way city fixtures fall though. A lot of tough games at home and easy away, I'd prefer it the other way around as city are flat track bullies at home.

Aguero is fixture proof though and Costa also gets withdrawn early.

Kun has a pretty decent record against the top sides. he's a World Class striker

Your reasons for avoiding are valid, though I don't agree with them, but my point was more about using injury fears as an excuse given what we currently know about Costa

He benched him last season away to Bayern with Dzeko up on his own too.

Kun has showed already this season he can score off the bench and at the moment he's fit so he will start most matches.

I think Jovetic finding his feet will help matters as well, Jovetic being injured for most of last season didn't allow Kun to rest.
