As always, there are plenty of situations for us to monitor for the upcoming Gameweek. This week’s Scout Mission has an eye on the form of Arsenal’s new frontman, Tottenham’s midfield, Louis van Gaal’s frontline options and the battle of the mid-price prospects as Swansea and Southampton go head-to-head at the Liberty.

Welbeck vs the Villa defence…
As strange as it may seem, Fantasy managers will be eyeing up both the Arsenal striker and Villa’s defensive assets ahead of the encounter at Villa Park. Should we see a second consecutive blank for Welbeck, those Fantasy managers who swooped early for the Gunners’ deadline day signing may begin to question his acquisition – all the more so if fellow mid-price forward Graziano Pelle can deliver once again at the weekend. Meanwhile, should Paul Lambert’s side manage another unlikely shut-out against a big side, investment in Alan Hutton will surely be on the up – the full back has already risen to a price of 4.1 this season but still looks excellent value for a guaranteed starter in a rearguard with just a single goal conceded thus far.

Burnley’s opportunity to convince…
Sean Dyche’s men have, up until this point, suggested that they can live at this level, but Saturday’s meeting with Sunderland is the first time they will have faced opponents at Turf Moor that give them the opportunity for three points. Clean sheets in their previous two matches have ensured that The Clarets’ budget defensive options are receiving plenty of interest right now, and this weekend’s encounter could see Michael Duff continue his rise to prominence, as well as offer Kieran Tripper the opportunity to show his potential. However, the Black Cats fixture may also be the first time Burnley’s attacking targets creep on to our radars – Scott Arfield will be hoping to add to his opening weekend goal against Chelsea, whilst the 4.9 priced Lukas Jutkiewicz will need to step up in the absence of fellow forward Danny Ings.

The mid-price showdown at the Liberty…
Two attractive and flourishing teams collide in South Wales, as Garry Monk’s Swansea host Ronald Koeman’s on-song Southampton. A host of mid-price talent is set to be on show, then, with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dusan Tadic expected to pull the strings in midfield, whilst Graziano Pelle’s growing band of owners will be optimistic that the Italian striker can add to his tally of three goals in his past two appearances. Early form would indicate that the Swans are favourites in Saturday afternoon’s clash, but with seven goals scored and only one conceded in their past two fixtures, Southampton are rapidly emerging as the team to back. The Saints also boast an obliging run of opponents to come after this weekend (QPR, tot, SUN, STO, hul, LEI), and another impressive showing against the Swans would see their assets begin to scale the summit of our Watchlist for Gameweek 6.

Downing vs Sterling…
No really. It may seem a mismatch, but West Ham have played their best football through Stewart Downing so far this campaign. The 5.5-priced midfielder has already accrued 22 points, and is currently rivaling some of the more fancied Fantasy talent in terms of goal threat and creativity thus far. One such player would of course be Raheem Sterling, whose ownership outweighs Downing’s by a whopping 44%, and the youngster looks poised for a return to the starting XI for Saturday evening’s encounter after finding himself on the bench in Liverpool’s loss the Villa last time out. We’ll certainly be watching carefully to see how these two match up, and whether Downing can continue to thrive as a differential in the Hammers’ more enterprising lineup.

More answers from United…
The QPR victory was a showcase but, such was the fragility of the opponent, we didn’t really see Louis Van Gaal’s new United side stretched. The visit to Leicester certainly will, however, with the Foxes having already chalked up two wins and a draw despite their tough opening schedule. Fantasy managers will be offered the chance to further assess Juan Mata’s role in midfield and how Radamel Falcao will be squeezed into the lineup, whilst another impactful display from Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria will ensure their popularity continues to mount. Meanwhile, in defence, questions marks still remain over whether Van Gaal will be able to switch to three at the back again – Luke Shaw had a 45-minute run out for United’s Under-21 side on Monday night, and could conceivably be handed the left wing back role on Sunday afternoon, allowing Marcus Rojo, Jonny Evans and Tyler Blackett to fill the central berths should their manager switch formation.

Chadli’s challenge to see off Eriksen and Lamela…
Nacer Chadli is offering outstanding value for his 6.1 price tag right now and, having scored three times and fired more close-range attempts than any midfielder, the upturn in interest is understandable. Christian Eriksen’s role as the middle man in the attacking midfield three looks promising, though – after grabbing his first goal of the campaign in Gameweek 4, the Dane’s form is starting to pick up and with a chance created every 37.1 minutes this season, his underlying creative stats suggest that more attacking returns are on the horizon. With Spurs facing a West Brom side that have conceded five in their last two fixtures, all three midfielders will be optimistic of having a say this weekend, though us Fantasy managers will be keen to see one emerge as the elite option in the next few Gameweeks.

A test of Warnock’s philosophy…
The Crystal Palace boss has many pacey weapons at his disposal for Sunday’s trip to Goodison, though it remains to be seen whether he will he go on the attack or show caution and pack the midfield. If it is indeed the former, goals could be on the cards, and Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie could prove explosive options for managers hunting for midfielders in the mid-to-lower price bracket.

Pellegrini’s shift to 4-5-1…
We saw it at Arsenal and in Munich last night, but will the Chilean stick with his new formation when City welcome Chelsea in Sunday afternoon’s table-topping showdown? With three goals to his name already this season, and having only appeared as a second half substitute in last night’s match, Sergio Aguero seems certain to start at the weekend, meaning that Edin Dzeko would be resigned to the bench yet again if Pellegrini rolls out a lone striker system. However, with Chelsea struggling defensively right now, the City boss could feasibly look to take on the Blues’ rearguard by lining up with two forwards, which would suggest that the 4-5-1 formation is only for certain opponents. If not, however, it’s clear that the 12.1 valued Aguero will stand out as the only feasible source of attacking points in their frontline whilst fit.

    ::::: Dead Team Challenge - GW4 Leaderboard Updated :::::

Congratulations to our current leader, The Casual who is on an impressive 272pts, which equates to an amazing Overall Rank of 1.3k... 😯

Absolutely brilliant for a dead team...

Highest scorer in the GW was Pilkoblade with a mightily impressive 97pts (honourable mention to The Casual & The Unabomber on 95pts)... which would have given him a weekly rank of inside 2k... 😯

With Rooney you know what you are getting, and IMO he is already close to essential as it is.

Not many people in the league that are proven FPL performers, have set pieces and are nailed on for 90 minutes every week.

Even if he's behind RVP/Falcao some games he will still get forward plenty.

here's the thing, RvP and Rooney are very similar in that both like to come a little deeper and get more involved, so they often compete for the same space. Falcoa is less involved in the overall play, wouldn't expect top find him more than 20 yards from the goal in most situations so he offers something a bit different, Rooney being tha captain makes him pretty much nailed, so it then comes down to where LvG uses him

Neither are 'support strikers' though, and neither have the traits that other second strikers do. Look at the successful ones in the PL lately. Aguero/Dzeko, Suarez/Sturridge. Neither Falcao or RVP really go wide or dribble around players. RVP might drop back and get involved (barely) but not even close to the level of the other guys I don't see it working.

FWIW I have Rooney and don't plan to sell (I did until I watched the QPR game). Untik there's some evidence that he's getting dropped he's the best United option

He won't play as deep as we have seen in the past as we have added some decent quality in midfield in Herrera and Blind with Fletcher to sub in and still have Carrick to come back

Yep..Falcao may be the better pick from open play but then factor in set pieces with RVP off the pitch and Rooney murders him...that and the fact Falcao is actually a greedy sod with hardly any assist potential..Great player though.

        my view is this

Falcao - likey to get 25+ goals and maybe 2-3 assists (most of which will be rebounded shots)

RvP 20-25 goals and 10-15 assists as he likes to come deeper, but may lose set pieces with both Mata and Di Maria being left footed

Rooney 15-20 goals and 15-20 assists as he still has right sided set pieces, plus when it comes to assists he's the original Flukaku. Plus the BPS love him

In short, as long as Rooney is playing he's the best option

fair point but the point remains, Falcao will score the most, RvP 2nd Rooney 3rd but the gap back to Rooney won't be huge and he'll make up most/all with assists BPS

            Yeah, just "a tad" optimistic.

Can't see Falcao, Rooney or RVP going past 20 goals personally. Also, doubt RVP will get those assist numbers again, and Rooney's need to be trimmed down.

Think JK is also overrating Falcao a bit, thinking he'll be the same supreme goalscorer, given the big knee injury and potentially not on pens.

Also Mata has 8 goals in his last 10 league games, RVP has 2. Might not be silly to think he'll outscore RVP for goals, if their respective game times go in the opposite direction.

Bench Chambers, NTaylor, Moreno or Clyne.

How is this looking for a WC team?

    De Gea 4.0
    Ivan NTaylor Clyne Hutton Moore
    Fab Siggy Ster DiMaria Chadli
    Naismith Roon Costa

Maybe a bit template/bandwagon and I am a bit unsure about having 3 Man Utd players in it. Might go for Ramsey over DiMaria.

Unfortunately, no bibs to be seen in Liverpool's training pictures today.

Balotelli still having problems it seems:

The only thing that bothers me is if LVG goes to three at the back again..does Rafa lose his spot ?...And Rojo is a lot better at set pieces than we are giving him credit for imo (that was his head that was nearly on the end of ADM's free kick/goal btw)

LVG won't go three at the back again and even if he does rafael is still a better option at wing back than Valencia.

Drop Aguero or Ade for Costa? Had an awful week last week, doubting any decisions I make this week

    1. RD84
      • 14 Years
      11 years, 5 months ago

If you can afford to keep Aguero, it's likely the better long term choice, barring injury. I think Soldado will eventually cut into Ade's time. Adebayor could do well this weekend, but I'd at least wait and see whether he plays today (I don't think he will, but we'll see)

    2. Hank Scorpio
      • 14 Years

Neither, I think Costa's fixtures mean you may have missed the boat and it might be worth sticking with Aguero and Ade for now.

Here's my team, it's great on paper, however there's so much rotation risk:
      Neto - Cássio
      Zúñiga - Arias - Rzeźniczak - Dier - Darmian
      Hamšík - Kampl - Cuadrado - Kovacic - Gullón
      Soriano (C) - Osvaldo - Bacca

Not sure whether to go Hamsik over Callejon/Mertens.

    Problems in CAPS

    KRUL - GREEN
    TERRY - JONES - CHESTER - Clyne - Chambers

Don't think pelle will rise again. Isn't getting enough transfers. Costa might tho and you'd think Debuchy was certain to drop.

    3. KenJM
      • 11 Years
      11 years, 5 months ago

Debuchy will drop tonight - certain

      Costa went up 10.6 > 10.7 on Friday 12th
      also up 10.7 > 10.8 on Monday 15th
he has risen 7,875 so far today and is + 49.1% - so close call because he is not 100% to play against MC that could hold his take-up back.....
on balance would expect not to rise before Sunday.

Pelle started at 7.5 and went up to 7.6 on Tuesday 16th
he has risen 3409 so far today and is +14.5% - so not expected to rise before Saturday.

      Hope this helps
