Our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. The three-part approach, which takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections, will hopefully help to steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Judging by the voting in this week’s Captain Poll, there’s no real standout candidate as we head towards Gameweek 5. United’s Wayne Rooney just edges it at the summit – ahead of a trip to Leicester, he receives just over 21% of votes cast after grabbing a goal and assist in last week’s comprehensive home win over QPR.

Team-mate Angel di Maria picked up similar returns against the R’s and has persuaded 17% to hand him the captaincy – only just less than Chelsea’s prolific Diego Costa. Despite firing seven goals in four appearances, most Fantasy managers reckon the summer signing faces a tough task to continue his scoring streak as the Blues roll up to the Etihad, with many fearing Jose may park the bus again.

Further down, Emmanuel Adebayor, with a mere 7% FPL ownership, offers a strong differential alternative. Rested from Tottenham’s midweek Europa League match, he takes on an out-of-sorts West Brom backline that that conceded two or more goals in three out of four matches under new manager, Alan Irvine. Radamel Falcao also find a place in the top five for United’s visit to the King Power Stadium, despite finding himself on the bench last weekend.

Elsewhere, a trio of highly-owned midfielders are also in consideration. Gylfi Sigurdsson has delivered 16 points in his two appearances at the Liberty ahead of the visit of Southampton, whilst Aaron Ramsey – similar to the Swans playmaker – has scored or assisted in three of his four appearances as Arsenal make their way to Villa. After being rested from the starting XI last weekend, Raheem Sterling is a sure starter for Liverpool’s trip to West Ham – two goals in three appearances in the Reds’ starting line-up bodes well against a backline yet to keep out their opponents.

Danny Welbeck is the highest Arsenal player in this week’s Poll as the Gunners attempt to break down the league’s most resilient defence. Yet to open his account for Arsene Wenger’s side, the deadline-day signing is backed by over 4% of your votes – more than Sergio Aguero ahead of City’s clash with Chelsea, despite the Argentine scoring in three of his four league appearances.

Been saying that all week mate. Can't see why the majority of people who own both Rooney and him go for the big only because won against QPR at home...

This article hasn't helped my decision to be honest.

It's mainly repeated members stats, that we already have, and presents no real argument for each player.

In this case, being neutral and sitting on the fence, a trait usually desired in an FFS article, is counter-productive to the article's purpose.

I've never been a fan of this article, honestly. It rarely gives me something I didn't already know from my own explorations in the member stats and tables. But I guess that is the point - to aggregate that info for those who haven't had the time to do it on their own.

Last year these articles were much better.

They used to show stats tables for the top candidates lined up against defensive stats from the opposition they were facing. This really helped frame the form vs fixture debate that we go through each week.

Now its just rehashing 2 sources of data I can find at the click of the button and listing a few stats in paragraph form that are hard to interpret.

Used to be my most useful article of the week, barely bother reading it now.

    Lloris
    Lovren, PVA, Duff
    Sigurdsson, Ramsey, Mata, Sterling (c)
    Pellè, Rooney (vc), Costa

    Murphy; Puncheon, Naylor, Coloccini

Good to go? Bought Sterling for a hit this week, that seems like a good enough reason to captain him...

Last week all the hype was Rooney>Balotelli. One goal later and its Balotelli>Rooney. People need to stop being sheep and look at numbers and make long-term decisions. But then again I hope they continue to knee-jerk like that! 🙂

Guys, my backline at the moment is:

Debuchy, Van Aanhot, Dawson, Wilson and Hutton.

Got 2 FT, template mids and Rooney and Costa up top so I figure the best use of my 2 frees is to sort out my defense.

Will do Debuchy to Baines which leaves £1.6m

Should I replace Dawson with Moreno, Williams or Clyne?

I'm putting together a list of FPL "personal reminders" to keep my transfers and player selections sensibly logical rather than drifting into the knee-jerk territory.

What are some of your "unwritten rules"?

    For example:
    - Form > fixtures
    - Baines: don't bench, don't captain
    - Subs: When in doubt, play the better player

The Baines one (second part of it) and the classic "never take a hit for a defender" are the most ridiculous ones I keep reading on here.

      No...

But I am going Naismith (c). Is that a bit mental?

I'd be all over him this GW... if Sturridge was starting.

The impact of Sturridge on his form has been enough to make me look elsewhere. Was badly burnt last week as well

Brought in Falcao on a WC last week.

Should I just admit I was wrong and bring in Rooney?

Yes you should admit that you were wrong bringing him in so early, but that doesn't mean that you need to bring Rooney in now.
