Our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. The three-part approach, which takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections, will hopefully help to steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Judging by the voting in this week’s Captain Poll, there’s no real standout candidate as we head towards Gameweek 5. United’s Wayne Rooney just edges it at the summit – ahead of a trip to Leicester, he receives just over 21% of votes cast after grabbing a goal and assist in last week’s comprehensive home win over QPR.

Team-mate Angel di Maria picked up similar returns against the R’s and has persuaded 17% to hand him the captaincy – only just less than Chelsea’s prolific Diego Costa. Despite firing seven goals in four appearances, most Fantasy managers reckon the summer signing faces a tough task to continue his scoring streak as the Blues roll up to the Etihad, with many fearing Jose may park the bus again.

Further down, Emmanuel Adebayor, with a mere 7% FPL ownership, offers a strong differential alternative. Rested from Tottenham’s midweek Europa League match, he takes on an out-of-sorts West Brom backline that that conceded two or more goals in three out of four matches under new manager, Alan Irvine. Radamel Falcao also find a place in the top five for United’s visit to the King Power Stadium, despite finding himself on the bench last weekend.

Elsewhere, a trio of highly-owned midfielders are also in consideration. Gylfi Sigurdsson has delivered 16 points in his two appearances at the Liberty ahead of the visit of Southampton, whilst Aaron Ramsey – similar to the Swans playmaker – has scored or assisted in three of his four appearances as Arsenal make their way to Villa. After being rested from the starting XI last weekend, Raheem Sterling is a sure starter for Liverpool’s trip to West Ham – two goals in three appearances in the Reds’ starting line-up bodes well against a backline yet to keep out their opponents.

Danny Welbeck is the highest Arsenal player in this week’s Poll as the Gunners attempt to break down the league’s most resilient defence. Yet to open his account for Arsene Wenger’s side, the deadline-day signing is backed by over 4% of your votes – more than Sergio Aguero ahead of City’s clash with Chelsea, despite the Argentine scoring in three of his four league appearances.

Its not a dumb question. RMT rates them 2.3 v 2.29 in Cahill favour

Villa 3 CS out of 4. Chelsea 0

City away is the worse fixture on the calendar.

I will probably go Cahill after all that though

Villa has had many CS so far, no doubt. But they are up against Arsenal, and I can´t see them getting anything out of that game. City away is a very though fixture and I don´t think Chelsea will get a CS either but Cahill is a bigger goal threat so I would defo play him

I'm pretty crap at this game, but I think Ade is extremely underrated. That said, it looks like Pelle is just hitting a purple patch and those fixtures are hard to pass up. Don't think you can go too wrong with either choice.

Ade is under-rated when he turns up. Over-rated when he can't be arsed. Never know which it will be with him

Haven't noticed him not putting in a shift in recent memory. His lack of returns normally seems to be due to lack of service not for his lack of effort.

I think this is the hardest week yet to pick your starting XI

I've used my FT to replace Sturridge with Adebayor:

    Begovic
    Dier, Williams, Lovren
    Ramsey, Sigurdsson, Chadli, Mata
    Pelle, Costa (V), Adebayor (C)
    Bench: Guzan, Coloccini, Larsson, Clyne

Any thoughts guys? I'd particularly be interested to know if people think I'm right to go with Adebayor as Captain over Costa this week!

        Sterling Siggy Tadic.

        - Sterling isn't going anywhere near my bench.
        - Siggy has a home game but is a minor possibility
        - I have a gut feeling about Tadic, and his stats are also great.

I think Southampton will win tomorrow due to how they've played at Anfield and Upton Park (along with their latest 4-0 win), and if they do Tadic will be central to that.

I picked Clyne. The way I looked at it is to ignore the CS (as its very unpredictable and 50/50 in a game like this) and look at who has more potential for attacking points. Easy decision after that.

"Retain" is the wrong word. You can not retain what you do not have.

But no, he won't be taking Manquillo's place anytime soon. The mandingo has been one of Liverpool's best and most consistent players so far, along with Moreno and Joe Allen (unfortunately injured).

If he's starting....all day long. If Rooney is such a hot pick, Falcao should be red hot pick.

I know people are saying Di Maria only scores a few goals a season but I’m hoping he gets them this weekend as I’ve made him captain. Having Costa and Aguero is rely annoying this weekend. I don’t have a clear captain choice.

Welbz should be able to run in behind old man Senderos a fair few times tomorrow. All a matter of whether or not he buries his chances. Not a close call imo, Hendo to the bench.
