Our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. The three-part approach, which takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections, will hopefully help to steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Judging by the voting in this week’s Captain Poll, there’s no real standout candidate as we head towards Gameweek 5. United’s Wayne Rooney just edges it at the summit – ahead of a trip to Leicester, he receives just over 21% of votes cast after grabbing a goal and assist in last week’s comprehensive home win over QPR.

Team-mate Angel di Maria picked up similar returns against the R’s and has persuaded 17% to hand him the captaincy – only just less than Chelsea’s prolific Diego Costa. Despite firing seven goals in four appearances, most Fantasy managers reckon the summer signing faces a tough task to continue his scoring streak as the Blues roll up to the Etihad, with many fearing Jose may park the bus again.

Further down, Emmanuel Adebayor, with a mere 7% FPL ownership, offers a strong differential alternative. Rested from Tottenham’s midweek Europa League match, he takes on an out-of-sorts West Brom backline that that conceded two or more goals in three out of four matches under new manager, Alan Irvine. Radamel Falcao also find a place in the top five for United’s visit to the King Power Stadium, despite finding himself on the bench last weekend.

Elsewhere, a trio of highly-owned midfielders are also in consideration. Gylfi Sigurdsson has delivered 16 points in his two appearances at the Liberty ahead of the visit of Southampton, whilst Aaron Ramsey – similar to the Swans playmaker – has scored or assisted in three of his four appearances as Arsenal make their way to Villa. After being rested from the starting XI last weekend, Raheem Sterling is a sure starter for Liverpool’s trip to West Ham – two goals in three appearances in the Reds’ starting line-up bodes well against a backline yet to keep out their opponents.

Danny Welbeck is the highest Arsenal player in this week’s Poll as the Gunners attempt to break down the league’s most resilient defence. Yet to open his account for Arsene Wenger’s side, the deadline-day signing is backed by over 4% of your votes – more than Sergio Aguero ahead of City’s clash with Chelsea, despite the Argentine scoring in three of his four league appearances.

Thoughts on Kolarov for GW6 (at Hull) and GW7 (at Villa)?

    - Probably won't start vs Chelsea and looks likely to drop to 5.9 soon.
    - Usually plays 90 mins against weaker teams.
    - Racked up 1g 8a in 2200mins last season.

Could be a very solid pick for those two weeks imo. Or am I missing something?

He was going to be first choice, but then his errors made a hash of that. He should start vs weaker teams but it's definately not a given

I think you may as well.. many captaincy options fail on a weekly basis so you may as well chance it.
At least 60% of the game won't have Costa captain, as was the case with Suarez and RVP in years gone by.

yeah, its about predicting though innit

i.e if you can predict something ahead of the pack like utd scoring 4 last week. i can see arsenal demolishing villa this week tbh.

Past performance is key to predicting. Of course they could score a bucket load Villa were terrible last season and most of the team are the same. It just has a bit more risk associated with it this season

            • 14 Years

well what about utd's performance before the 4-0 win? i think villa have been lucky, credit to their them for their win over liverpool, but other than that they've had very easy fixtures. Hutton-Senderos-Baker-Cissokho is their likely back 4 this week. that is enough said for me.

I was only saying it was more risky than previously because they have been more solid. I am the one talking about a punt on Lamela now that probably is crazy. He has never shown any form for Spurs!

    Hey Everyone,

I would really appreciate some advice.

    My team is

    De Gea ( MyHill)
    Clyne Cahill Vlaar Lovren Dummet
Di Maria Sterling Fabregas Wanyama Sigurddson
    Costa Rooney Bojan

I think Bojan is a big problem and needs to go, any ideas?

I have 0.5 in the bank...

hmm that would work for this week, but evertons fixtures after that are a little daunting,i think i need to fix this in one fel swoop!

I had something very similar this week and ended up upgrading Bojan to Pelle at the expense of selling Terry for PVA.

I think you may be able to pull of something similar with Cahill (or even Lovren), if you don't mind getting rid.

Patrick Van Aanholt from Sunderland. There are plenty of other alternatives (N.Taylor or a Stoke Defender)

Hi guys serial lurker of epic proportions here of many years so go easy on me but figured my team needs more than my tiny mind to sort out my issues so thought i'd ask the greater good of the community for their thoughts.

    Krull

    Clyne Duff Dummett

    Sterling Siggy Cesc Ramsey

    Aguero Rooney Costa

    0 in the bank

    Elliot Moore Wisdom Marney

Clearly my disgraceful defence needs sorting out and always planned to save my free transfer this week with a view to drop ole granny shagger and ramsey nxt week and bring in Di Maria and one of Welbeck or pelle to give me the funds to sort out my x4 4 mill shitters at the back.

Issues i have with this is if granny shagger does well again i'm unlikely to want to do that which leaves ramsey as prime target for a downgrade. If ramsey is to go i could bring in chadli for him this week instead as the west brom fixture looks good doesnt it which in turn however would stop my free move for di maria welbeck/pelle next week.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

not a popular choice probably but i would downsize aguero to someone who isn't gonna miss half the games. The savings on him could easily net you 3m to work that defense out. Even Aguero>Sturridge lets you move Dummett to Wilson or Chambers for example.

yeah pretty awful stuff. not inappropriate at all Aaron. i ended up naming the league 'The John Dunn FPL Cup' and bought a very nice trophy £180 worth of trophy in fact which is really nice, Johns name went on it as the first winner along with his OR from last year and now its game on as to who gets his/her name underneath Johns name as this years winner.

It's kinda 'you've made your bed, now lie in it'
In fairness, you know your problem but that defence could hold out until the fixtures make your decision easier.
I'd stick with your plan and save transfer - Clyne, Duff, Moore aren't doing badly & Wisdom is at least playing with easier fixtures coming up.
Agueros or Costas hamstrings may make that decision for you soon enough so I'd hang tight - the season is still in it's infancy as far as form is concerned.

First time poster not sure who to bench need help?

    Bego
    Caulker, Lovren, Van Aanholt
    Siggy, Fabs, Sterling, Rams
    Rooney, Costa, Naismith

Bench currently is Schniderlin, terry, Dummett

certainly wouldn't bench terry. it's only a matter of time before he scores off a set piece, and he often does it in big games - plus city aren't exactly imperious at defending them. there's an outside chance of a clean sheet too... i know chelsea have been conceding, but i can see jose going more defensive for this one.

Jose might hold back his attackers in games like this. Other than that, there is no more better option. I benched Silva myself. Might be a tight 1-1 or 0-0 game.
