Our weekly Sky game article is back again after Gameweek 5’s action. We delve into the usual info, including Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries and the current market trends, before taking a look at the Scout team and our plans for the week ahead.

Gameweek 5 Man of the Match Awards

These were the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures, achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional five points).

FixtureMoTM
Arsenal vs Man CityJack Wilshere
Chelsea vs SwanseaDiego Costa
Crystal Palace vs BurnleyScott Arfield
Southampton vs NewcastleGraziano Pelle
Stoke vs LeicesterEsteban Cambiasso
Sunderland vs TottenhamMousa Dembele
West Brom vs EvertonKevin Mirallas
Liverpool vs Aston VillaNathan Baker
Man United vs QPRAngel di Maria
Hull vs West HamEnner Valencia

One defender, six midfielders and three forwards picked up the awards last weekend. Diego Costa’s hat-trick helped him to grab his second MoTM award in four appearances, putting him as the top point-scorer overall with 53 points. Angel di Maria and Kevin Mirallas look bang in form at the moment and would be my tips for the coming weeks if you can find a way to draft them into your midfield. Esteban Cambiasso’s arrival at Leicester brings an interesting budget option into consideration – the 4.4m Argentine looks a very good enabler to free up cash and is likely to rack up passing and tackling bonus over the season.

Gameweek 5 Bonus Points

Four goalkeepers achieved bonus points from collecting five or more saves. Robert Green, Ben Hamer, Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski were the men in question, with Fabianski claiming the most saves over the Gameweek with seven, luckily bringing his points for the week back to zero after conceding four at Chelsea. Green joins Kasper Schmeichel at the top of the pile with an extra four points from bonus so far.

In defence, 12 players grabbed bonus, five for tackles and eight for passes completed. Javier Manquillo was the man to gather both and Liverpool’s new right-back looks to be bit of a bonus magnet after racking up eight additional points in just three matches – if he can see off the challenge of Glen Johnson, at just 5.5m he could be a real steal.

In midfield there were 26 beneficiaries in total – 15 for tackling and 15 for passes. All-action midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin, Aaron Ramsey, Ander Herrera and Moussa Dembele all picked up both. Schneiderlin leads the way overall with 12 additional points.

Fantasy Football Scout members can access all information regarding bonus points in the Player Stats section by clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

NameTeamValue% of Managers
SturridgeLiverpool9.86.76%
JoveticMan City7.95.64%
DebuchyArsenal6.15.08%
BalotelliLiverpool9.22.34%
RamseyArsenal8.61.98%

Daniel Sturridge, Stevan Jovetic and Mathieu Debuchy are all stuck on the physio’s table for this weekend, although Sturridge has taken to Twitter to reveal he is back in light training. Mario Balotelli’s lacklustre performance against Aston Villa was obviously enough to convince a few people to jump ship already and Aaron Ramsey somewhat surprisingly makes up the fifth spot – I can only assume he’s been shipped out for the identically priced Angel di Maria as listed below.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
CostaChelsea9.57.79%
FalcaoMan United9.45.27%
Di MariaMan United8.64.93%
WelbeckArsenal7.83.10%
HuttonAston Villa3.82.94%

Diego Costa is, unsurprisingly, the top transfer target this week after a stunning performance last weekend – the Spain international has a tough fixture against Man City at the Etihad this week but it appears that hasn’t deterred the punters too much. United duo Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria have also been drafted in by roughly 5% of managers ahead of a trip to Leicester and both are bound to rake in the points over the coming weeks. Danny Welbeck’s appeal is clear to see – he’s playing in a creative Arsenal team as the focal point and will set you back a meager 7.8m. On paper, it looks too good to be true and so far it seems to be proving just that but goals are surely just around the corner for the England forward. More Fantasy managers are cottoning on to budget option Alan Hutton, who, at 3.8m, is one of the cheapest players in the game – the Scot finds himself as the second highest scoring defender overall as Villa continue to defy the odds.

My Team

Fabianski

Rooney, Jelavic©

ITB: 0.6m
Transfers remaining 34/40
Last week’s points: 55
Overall points: 273
Rank: 7,100

Notes

No Diego Costa or Cesc Fabregas contributed to a heavy slide in overall rank, dropping from 2k to 7k. Fellow Eden Hazard owners will likely be equally frustrated after he turned out an amazing performance yet left with just a two-pointer to his name. I backed Christian Eriksen to come good last week and thankfully he delivered a goal and passing bonus to justify my faith and can keep his place for now. A no-show for Yaya Toure and a one-point cameo from Raheem Sterling was a tad unlucky but hopefully they should both be back in their respective starting line-ups this week. Wayne Rooney grabbed 20 points as my skipper and then I switched the armband over to Nikica Jelavic who unfortunately drew a blank.

Captain Plan

My captain for Saturday is Nikica Jelavic as Hull head to Newcastle. Hopefully the Magpies defence will be as porous as it has been in recent matches and Jelavic can provide me with a differential – I doubt many Fantasy managers will have him in their team or even have a captain at all on Saturday due to the way the fixtures have fallen. For Sunday, I’ll switch the armband back to the reliable Rooney for United’s trip to Leicester and hope he plays a significant part in a big victory – choosing Rooney means I will also go into Gameweek 7 nicely set up for the Red Devils’ home clash with West Ham.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’re running our own Fantasy Football Scout League this season and we’re currently topping the Private League rankings as per usual. With a £1,000 prize to the winner, you’d be mad not to get involved. To join, visit Sky Sports Fantasy Football and key in League Name: FFScout, League Code: 8009000.

The Fantasy Football Club

This Friday you can catch Fenners and Merse at 18:30 on Sky Sports One HD on The Fantasy Football Club show, where they will be discussing the upcoming week’s Fantasy Football, quizzing former Bolton, Burnley and Wigan manager Owen Coyle and asking him for his #One2Eleven.

  1. To you, to me: Chelsea passing analysis

Jonty’s hot topic regarding Match of the Day suggesting Fabregas ‘looks for’ Costa was interesting… but I’m always sceptical about MotD analysis. You can make any point with the right clips.

I’ve hunted for ‘pass combination’ stats and the best I’ve found is one that lists the top 20 combos in a game. # of combos between Haz, Cesc and Costa….

    CHE vs BUR
    Costa to Cesc - 12
    Cesc to Haz - 11
    Haz to Costa - 11
Any other combo (AOC) below 10

    CHE vs LEI
    Cesc to Haz - 14
    Haz to Cesc - 9
    Haz to Costa - 9
    AOC below 8

    CHE vs EVE
    Cesc to Costa - 11
    AOC below 9
(This was the only Chelsea combo in the top 20 😯 )

    CHE vs SWA
    Cesc to Haz - 21
    Haz to Cesc - 15
    AOC below 8

    CHE vs SCHALKE
    Cesc to Haz - 16
    Costa benched.

Tl;dr - it’s not even that long. 😉 But basically, Cesc to Haz is regularly the top combo out of all Chelsea passes. If Haz can get in the right positions, and improve his finishing, Cesc should find him. Also, there’s no evidence to suggest that:
    A) Cesc is providing Costa with more supply than he’s giving Hazard, or
    B) That Costa is relying more on Cesc than on Hazard.

Good news for Haz owners, if you ask me. 😛 (Not suggesting it’s bad for Costa/Cesc either!)

    FWIW! 😀

Those passes could have been anywhere on the pitch though.

Imo opinion it's not the amount of passes but the positioning of the passes.

Ah. There you are. I would like to apologise - you were quite right. 😳

I have had a crappy day - but no excuse. 🙂

However, I meant the thrust of what I said, if not the way in which I said it - I feel that you ought to play picks on their merit, not whether they play each other. And I feel that you might improve that defence!

You are spot on. Several may just be rolling it out wide to him.

I do think it's positive though that Cesc -> Haz is regularly THE #1 combo... could suggest Cesc values Haz as a team mate and is looking to him too. I'm not making a clear point.. just suggesting there's potential for my man Haz. 🙂 Interesting stats, but only stats at the end of the day.

Great research. Any figures on passes from Cesc to Costa in the box/ final third? The point MOTD was making was that Cesc was seeking him out in goal scoring situations. Cesc's assist tally would indicate that is the case.

I'm afraid it looks like this is the best you can get stats-wise for free. 🙁

I'm sure you're right. He's a central striker in a team that has cried out for one. My point, really, is that Cesc will provide assists for Hazard, and Hazard will provide assists for Costa. Right now, this hasn't happened, but hopefully my stats suggest it will do over time.

*p.s. optimistic Hazard owner may provide a little motive for this post* 😛

Fantastic...MOTD analysis well and truly shafted. Of course Cesc seeks out Costa quite a lot because he's the striker...but not to an extent of a partnership at the expense of any other...Top post.

I should've got you to write my tl;dr. Expertly put.. this is my point. 😛 It's more me sticking up for Hazard... Costa/Cesc is great.. but Costa/Haz and Haz/Cesc could be equally great. 🙂

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 5

Good evening everyone. Later than normal (I say this every week...) but here we go, it's that time again! Scout Picks Challenge!

    ****** WHAT IS IT? ******

For those of you who haven't been around or aren't aware, every evening prior to the start of the gameweek FFS releases their picks of players for the gameweek, "Scout Picks", as well as 3 differentials before the first games to separate yourself from the crowd.

This is your way to have a bit of fun and challenge those scout picks with a set of your own (read instructions below). This will always open the day before the gameweek starts around 8pm, and whilst you don't have to play weekly, the more you play the better chance you have of winning!

Gameweek winners will also be awarded a spot in the Community Roundup article.

    ****** INSTRUCTIONS ******

Everyone can have their own scout picks but with one simple rule,

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM
(yes, two of your players at least will be on opposing teams).

You can only have ONE submission, and your FIRST submission will be what is accepted. You also must respond DIRECTLY to this post (not to a reply on this post). FFS Scout Picks are automatically enrolled. Teams must be submitted in an easy to read format, e.g.

    GK
    DEF DEF DEF
    MID MID MID MID
    FOR FOR FOR

Deadline for this gameweek is Saturday 20th September, 11.30am.

    ****** SCORING ******

Regardless of number of applicants, scoring will be done by the following:

    1st place: 3 points
    2nd place: 2 points
    3rd place 1 point

There is also a bonus point which everyone is eligible for. Essentially, if you score higher than FFS' Scout Picks AND Differential Picks (i.e. 14 players), you will be awarded with a bonus point regardless of whether you were in the top 3 scoring positions or not.

Welcome to the game, and good luck.

The spreadsheet used to calculate the scores and hold the rankings etc will be made publicly available at the following link:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/oyuz31n7ppeccuu/Scout%20Picks%20Challenge.xlsm?dl=0

Also note: Up-to-date results will be posted at the end of a matchday when bonus points have been confirmed and added by FPL HQ. I may not be able to update results immediately due to work commitments, so please bear with me.

            Good work.

I am tempted by Cahill to Baines, but not sure if it's worth jumping the gun on Baines till GW8.

Could go either way. I did it, think this week alone will make it worth it. Saves a transfer down the line too.
Chelsea have been so attacking so far, really didn't expect them to concede so many.

Well this is it. Cahill is hurting me ATM, just fancy a cleanie to be repaid by him finally next week.

                But Baines has penos.

Yep, Baines' penos swung it for me. Hopefully he'll get a CS and attacking returns this week but he's volatile to own and his monster scores come randomly.

I would save the transfer. I have basically the same roster, i moved Naismith out for Ulloa with my FT of the week. I too was tempted to shed Cahill for a 5.5 def and bank the addition money to upgrade FWD or MID down the line.

      Bego (Elliot)

Clyne, Terry , N.Taylor (Hutton, Wisdom)

      Sterling, Ramsey, Fab, Siggy (Marney)

      Rooney, Costa, Ade (C)

Would you change anything? Don't say "No (C)Ade" 🙂

I wasn't certain who to play out of Hutton(ARS) and Terry(mci).... Something inside me is telling me to play Hutton but I just can't bring myself to do it haha....

      What changes to make:

      Lloris

      Wilson Naylor Lovren
      Siggy Mirallas Sterling Ozil Fabregas
      Pelle Welbeck

      Given Costa Clyne Caulker

      1 FT 0.0 ITB

Ideally, I want to ship Pelle, Because he wont score big points again this week.
My defence is a hard one, because any of them could play.
Midfield is harder. I will ship Ozil out Next week if he doesnt perform.
Forward. Welbeck has had lots of service and looks dangerous. I want to ship Pelle,
And Costa I garantee wont score big points.
      Pelle to who?
