I’ll start off simply. I am in the minority. I don’t have Chelsea’s nine-goal hero Diego Costa, have never had Diego Costa and, I confess, I don’t actually want Diego Costa.

There. I said it. Feels good to get it off my chest. I’m one of the 33.2% of players (as of writing) who don’t have him. In retrospect, this stems from (my mistake, if you will, of) not backing Costa from the get-go. I was torn, pre-season, between Costa and Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney as my ‘expensive’ forward and I took one look at United’s fixtures and decided. Whoops.

Anyway, the point of this article is about why I don’t think it’s really worth getting Costa in if you are one of the 33.2% who  haven’t already. Here are my three key reasons for staying off this particular bandwagon.

Everybody has him

Say I transfer Costa in tomorrow. So what? It won’t catch me up any places. Everybody has him. If I have him, I’ll probably captain him each week too. A waste, as so will everybody else. Lets face it, while his consistency has been incredible, is he always going to be the top-scoring player in your XI? I’d wager most probably not. The only chance for rotation of captaincy comes if you also have one of Sergio Aguero or Daniel Sturridge (when he’s fit again) and even then it’s basically a switch between the two.  It is also worth considering his potential failure. If he fails to score, that’s around 67% of players getting next to nothing (most getting next to nothing twice for the captaincy).

He’s no Luis Suarez

Granted, Costa has 54 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. But his strike rate of nine goals in the first seven games is unsustainable across the season. For an essential player who I’d want to captain each week I’d want the chance of bonus points and assists as well as goals. This was something that Robin Van Persie in 2012/13 and Luis Suarez in 2013/14 were able to achieve. This season Costa has scored but failed to pick up FPL bonus points on four occasions. His two sets of maximum bonus points were only achieved after scoring a brace and a hat-trick. It is clear that Costa is not one of this season’s bonus point darlings, unless he can score a hat-trick every game. Regarding assists, quite simply he has none. So with only goals in his locker his owners will be relying on a Herculean goal-scoring run this season to justify his price tag and the captaincy.

Too expensive

His current price tag of 11.1 in the FPL game is a lot. If you have the so-called best front three (something like Aguero/Costa/ Southampton’s Graziano Pelle) it costs you in excess of 30.0 in FPL. That’s almost a third of your starting budget and makes investing well in defence and midfield, where the likes of Angel di Maria, Raheem Sterling and other premium players are shining, tough. I’d argue that by having more money available you have far more flexibility to also take advantage of the the more expensive point-scoring defenders such as Leighton Baines and Branislav Ivanovic. Without Costa I can still get three decent strikers, a solid defence and a strong midfield. How many Costa owners can boast quality across the board?

There you go. I hope this generates a bit of discussion. In my view, if you want a big-hitting expensive forward, go for Aguero instead (under 13% ownership). I’ve been Costa-free for seven weeks and counting, am in the top 5% in FPL and have my wildcard intact.

54 pts is a powerful argument for the 33% without him to get him. But you do put forward a compelling case for surviving without him. Certainly gives some better captaincy options, which is what I as a Costa keeper take from this. No assists, rare bonus say to me that perhaps the armband is better placed elsewhere.

Great article by the way...good to get a different view on Fantasy management.

      It is.

The fear of a Costa hattrick is great...but its clear that one goal is not going to get bonus and assists just aren't part of his game. Aguero actually looks a far better captain shout at the moment in those weeks where ManC and Chelsea have similar fixtures. I'll keep, but certainly made me think twice about the armband.

if you got costa at 10.5 then a chunk of this article doesn't apply anyway. it's more for us poor souls without. not much will top capping hazard in gw4 and not having costa in the heart-breaker stakes. once you've been through that you can face anything though

There is the age old, but I bought him at 10.5 argument. Which puts him as an expensive but not essential striker. In this he doesnt have to be Luis Suarez, you dont need to captain him week in week out.

For me he is a reliable player who will net me 6+ points on a regular basis. Nothing more.

I have been pretty close to drop Costa before next GW and upgrade midfield. When Walcott is back, i ll probably go for it. This article shows that i am not mad, though it is probably soon to risk. But if I get Cisse, Walcott, Hazard instead of Costa, Downing, Tadic i ll probably get enough returns from midfield.

I'm a happy Costa owner from GW1 and had this discussion the other day about captaining Costa. If he scores one goal he wont likely get any baps so his second goal (if he gets it) is worth 7pts.

Costa for me, is quite undroppable. But as a captain, I will be choosing my games wisely. I agree with the article saying that his goal rate is unsustainable and while his shot accuracy is around 70% right now, that will only get lower too but because of his constant goal threat I cannot see myself dropping him.

Great article though and it does offer options and a sound argument AGAINST owning him.

I suppose at this point you're right - if you don't already have him there's no point in getting him. For those of us who had him since the start of the season, though, it's all been pure profit. Barring an injury he's on my squad for good.

I disagree. I advised a player last year to get in Suarez at around Christmas time. She shot up from. 500k and finished at a respectable 100k. If she hasn't got him, she would probably have finished round about the same rank

Nice article. Shame it applies to no one here 😛 Just kidding mate. But in seriousness, the argument can be made the other way. Costa is still going to be one of the best forwards in the game. By going without him, even at this stage, you could be shooting yourself in the foot. Sure you need to catch up. But going without the highest scoring player in the game is not the way to gain ground. Not unless you actually think you can get better value elsewhere. not just because you need a differential. Find a differential elsewhere.

An interesting article, but I believe you have to look at it logically.

Costa is, more than likely, going to be the top scoring player in the fpl game this year. He's thriving as the lone forward, has a great understand with cesc and can only get better when he fully adapts to the league. In al honestly, he looks hardly challenged at all for the golden boot this year unless he gets an injury.

Now ownership aside, with these comments in mind, it seems mad to go without him. From a purely points-wise take, costa will consistently deliver points when other premium forwards may faulter. If we now factor in ownership, sure you may have a week where costa blanks and your other forwards perform, but on June whole, your consistently going to be fighting a losing battle to make up points to the 66% when he does get on the score sheet.

Tl:dr? Costa is going to be top fpl scorer this year, just buy him and make up differentials else where...

The 'can't make any ground if I captain Costa' argument isn't so true. GW6 was the last time I captained him and I still had a GW rank of 168k. That will almost always get you a green arrow (in my case up 150k places overall). It's all about the rest of the squad, DC is now just a safety net.

Every season there are a handful of players who are the essential ones. Last time round it was Yaya and Suarez, season before it was Michu. They go up in value and you're jealous of everyone else who got them cheaper and has the points banked already...but you're only punishing yourself.

Buy him and be a smart arse with the rest of your squad. 😀

If i jumped 150k places I'd be top. I get that he's a safety net. But in my position, being without him, I can spread the extra few million I have spare for a cheaper forward elsewhere and make up the ~6 points I didnt get for having Costa.

Anyone that got him at 10.5 would be a tad mad to bin, unless they were chasing, but it's even a little early for that. At 11.1, I'd prob go for Aguero instead at the mo. Anyway, my miniature testes wouldn't allow me to bin him. Interesting argument for the opposition Tiggsy, but I'll side with the defence, for now, cheers.

0.6m is not big enough to decide not going without him. Similarly its just gw7. I will not want to put myself in a such huge risk of not having him. U can always have costa and not captain him.

Costa might not be ur highest point player every week. But he is surely consistent and will be the top 3 strikers.

Great article..agree about the everybody has him lark, just like Suarez and RVP before him he's become an FPL dullard pick....

Just to correct the Bonus point thing a little...Costa is actually the best pick in the game for bps...but not BAPS...and that's because of how good the other players are for attracting bps in his own team...http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/10/07/the-suspension-tightrope-gameweek-7/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_8502311

think the point still stands that he needs more than a goal for bonus. if chelsea pick up clean sheet wise it will only be even harder for him.

Id like to see a team without him as you say in the article with a solid all round team against a team with him in it
Because lets face it clean sheets these days are few and far between, so are scoring defenders
I can see him going thru a rough patch some time in the season but only if he gets injured am I jumping ship. Cant see any other Chelsea striker taking over him as first choice so is a cert starter

Whether or not Costa should be selected the argument that "everyone has him so I can't catch up any points" is quite obviously flawed. Given his ownership, it's much more likely that you'll fall significantly by not having him rather than catch up points. There are 10 other spots in your team to gain points, owning Costa should just be to negate points.

Last year I was late to the Suarez-wagon, but I sucked up my pride and got him for 1m more than everyone else, which allowed me to climb the rankings through other good differentials.

        Fair points.

I find my side has been picking up points fine across the XI. Dont get me wrong, I wish id had him at the start instead of Rooney (like I wish I hadnt benched Siggy week 1), but I dont think i need to alter my current XI to bring him in. I do see myself getting Costa after wildcarding for double gameweeks though.

You base this premise on him keeping up his scoring rate. If he slows significantly then you make huge gains by not having him.

So many problems with this viewpoint.

    1) No...he won't let you catch up, but as Yaya Toure proved...he'll certainly stop you falling FURTHER BEHIND.

    2) He costs less than RVP or Suarez did he doesn't need to equal them. Up until GW4 you could have had him for just 10.5.

    3) If you don't rate Costa, then how do you rate Fab/Haz/ADM or even Aguero (who also has 0 assists). Are you simply ignoring all heavy hitters?

I thought that about Ronaldo, the first season he exploded. But, if I was in your position I prob wouldnt get him in. tbh honest he would prob get you more points in total and you would prob finish higher overall than you will, but it is worth taking the risk to get even higher as not having him is a big diffo.

so go with your tactic this season, and justify it with the weak excuses you have, but next year captain hindsight would say pick the in form player. And even if you dont pick them gw1, get him in when he nears form.

good luck and good discussion point
