Leighton Baines rescues a point for Everton away to the Black Cats. Alexis Sanchez’ goal streak continues, Gylfi Sigurdsson notches for the first time since the season opener, Nacer Chadli grabs his sixth of the campaign, whilst Newcastle’s defence bring home the points once again.

Baines Delivers Yet Again

Leighton Baines was amongst the points once more yesterday, with a 76th minute penalty earning Everton a point on the road at Sunderland. The left-back has notched attacking returns in seven of his last nine, and despite teammate Seamus Coleman earning an assist at the Stadium of Light, Baines continues to look the one premium defender worth investing in right now: indeed, only Alexis Sanchez now has more points than the 7.3-priced Toffees’ full-back, even though Roberto Martinez’s outfit have only managed three clean sheets up until this point.

Black Cats Forced into Rearguard Rotation

The big news on the teamsheet yesterday was that Costel Pantilimon kept his place ahead of Vito Mannone between the sticks, and subsequently frustrated the visitors with a total of six saves across the 90 minutes. Elsewhere, with Patrick van Aanholt ruled out for up to three months with a shoulder injury, Gus Poyet opted to shift Anthony Reveillere to left-back, allowing Wes Brown a route back into the centre of defence after being dropped against Crystal Palace last time out. However, the pecking order in the Black Cats’ rearguard remains to be seen once Billy Jones returns and, with four tough fixtures to come after their trip to Leicester (CHE, MCI , liv, WHM), few will be looking at their assets in spite of their recent upturn in form.

Perez Form Continues

Newcastle recorded their fourth straight league win with a 2-0 victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns yesterday. With Alan Pardew continuing to be cautious with Papiss Cisse’s knee problems, the 4.8-valued Ayoze Perez grabbed the headlines yet again after scoring for the third game in a row – the manner of his finish certainly suggest a striker high on confidence right now and with showdowns against QPR, West Ham and Burnley in the next three, it’s difficult to see the youngster being dropped to the bench, given his fine form.

Magpies Rearguard Holds Firm

Newcastle are mainly demanding our attentions at the back, though, with yesterday’s clean sheet ensuring that it’s only one goal conceded in their last four. Daryl Janmaat was the main man in defence after earning assists for both his side’s goals in addition to the maximum bonus points, whilst skipper Fabricio Coloccini arrived on the radar with a goal before being withdrawn late on due to a knock. Intriguingly, Paul Dummett moved to centre-half to cover for the injured Steven Taylor in spite of the availability of Mike Williamson – at 4.1 to Janmaat’s 5.0, the versatile Dummett now seems to be nailed-on and has started each of the last seven.

Chadli Strikes as Kane Stumbles

Mauricio Pochettino handed Harry Kane his first league start after moving back to a 4-2-3-1 formation at home to Stoke yesterday. Whilst the youngster was unable to grab the opportunity and drew a blank, Nacer Chadli again scored for Spurs as he continues to look their one viable option at the moment. The Belgian is now up to third for midfielders after grabbing his sixth of the season in the 2-1 loss and, at a price of just 6.6, continues to prosper in spite of his side’s struggles. With five excellent fixtures in their next seven (hul, CPL, swa, BUR, lei), Chadli is surely set to earn further investment, with only 15% of FPL managers currently owning the in-form Belgian.

Bojan Finding His Feet

Mark Hughes chose to hand summer signing Bojan a second consecutive start, and was rewarded as the Spaniard finally opened his account for the season with a mazy run and finish, suggesting he’s now starting to settle in to his new surroundings. Jon Walters, meanwhile, grabbed Stoke’s second and has now managed a goal or assist in three of his last four. However, though the visit of Burnley to the Britannia in Gameweek 12 could prove prosperous, the Potters then face five tough clashes in their subsequent six (liv, mnu, ARS, CHE, eve) and managers are unlikely to be tempted by their assets for the long-term.

Sanchez Still Firing Despite Gunners’ Form

Alexis Sanchez’s unrivalled vein of form continued as he scored once more as Arsenal stumbled away to Swansea. The Chilean has now totaled six goals in the last four Gameweeks, picking up maximum bonus on each occasion, and with Angel Di Maria struggling over that same period, we could see a big swing in investment over the international break. Danny Welbeck continues to tick over, too, with a goal or assist in three of his last four now after setting up Sanchez in yesterday’s defeat. Though the former Man United man is clearly still being overshadowed by his team-mate, at 7.3 he is looking very good value, with the Gunners’ forthcoming schedule in mind (MUN, wba, SOU, sto, NEW).

Sigurdsson Back in the Goals

Gylfi Sigurdsson is back up to fourth in the Fantasy Premier League midfield standings after his unstoppable free-kick set Swansea on their way to a comeback win over Arsenal. That was the Icelander’s first goal since Gameweek 1, and having been sold by over 90,000 in the last two Gameweeks, the 6.7-priced man served up a timely reminder of his ability to produce regardless of the fixture – a trait that is sure to come in handy when the Swans visit Man City in Gameweek 12. With three home encounters in the next four after the Etihad clash (CPL, QPR, TOT), and Wilfried Bony’s minutes now surely under threat from match-winner Bafetimbi Gomis, owners of Sigurdsson are now likely to scrap their exit route plans as Garry Monk’s side look to take advantage of those kind Liberty fixtures.

Should I pull the trigger on Tadic -> Siggy now? It would mean I can do Welbeck and Fab -> Costa and Chadli/Downing next week.

I have 0.1 to play with if I want Chadli. Should I do the Siggy transfer now to catch rises there, or just save my transfer, and do Tadic, Fab and Welbeck -> Siggy, Downing and Costa for a hit next GW?

    Baines Clyne Wisdom (Naylor/Hutton)
    Fab Siggy Sanchez Chadli (Wanyama)

    Would you do:

    A) Hutton -> Dummett (play him v QPR)
    B) Save FT, play Wisdom away to CHE
    C) Save FT, play Naylor away to MCI

      1) It will depend who they are making way for (i.e. most will be counterbalancing a move for Agüero/Sánchez/Baines)
      2) This game is about making decisions for the next 10 GWs, not the next 1. Nobody should regret a move after a single GW

Not really, but as a general sanity check you should be VERY careful of making a switch that will break even at best (in most cases)

          • 13 Years
          11 years, 4 months ago

I don't know how i gave that impression - I just said in most cases.

Clearly Baines is the highest scoring, most in form and best PPG of all defenders. He'd be top of the list of players making this "NEVER take a hit for a defender" a false prophecy. I think there are a few that you could consider, and a number of other factors that make taking the hit a genuine option.

I don't think any other defender is worth a hit atm. Therefore, the word never wasn't probably the right word. Who knows if there will be Baines-like players in the future.

Ivanovic and Coleman are examples if they're going into a great fixture while the likes of Saints defence were worth it going into their strong run of games with the stats on side.

You might be losing 4 points, but that is not the end of it. You have that player for the long term and you'll get another transfer next week (which waiting a week would cost)

It's not as simple as a blanket statement IMO, theres a number of factors at play.

BUT, that said, I agree with it in principle since most of the time people stand to break even at best and lose out more often than not.

Fair enough. Most defenders you get are long-term transfers too, 4 points is really nothing in the long run.

Completely agree with this, and actually thought about it. 😀

I don't like the rule, tbh. I've taken hits for KEEPERS and they've done really well. E.g DDG---->Foster in GW 10, Foster got me a nice 10 points that week, DDG on 3. Admittedly, in hasn't panned out as well over the 2 weeks but it gave me a big boost in GW 10 and like 7Shades said allowed me another transfer before GW 11(Tadic--->Sanchez).

Someone who took a look at their defence and thought it was crap could've transferred Chester(someone with bad fixies now) for Chambers for example. If he had done this last week there would've been a massive gain with Chambers grabbing an 18 point haul that week. Since Arsenal had great fixtures then, it's not like it was some out-there move that no one would really think of, and thus resulting in point gains.

Almost never follow the Never Take a Hit for a defender rule, but then again I'd take a hit for anybody! 😛

Just saying, you can take hits for defenders, sensible ones of course, and they can pay off. Hits are more than reasonable to jump on other defeneders with a nice run of fixtures as your defenders' fixtures turn sour, or someone who goes on an attacking run like Baines.

Hope this actually means something and isn't just me spouting nonsense.

Baines has a purple patch then won't do anything for a few weeks at which point he will be sold then everyone regrets doing it and the cycle continues, how long will he continue to score points at this rate is probably the burning question for me but risk it anyway lol

currently 223rd without Aguero so happy to be hanging on !!

was 750k in wk 1 up to 134th a couple of weeks ago

being playing 343 but no one tempted to go 352 with the 3 star budget midfielders and 2 expensive with costa+kun upfront?

    chadli + siggy + downing + sanchez + ADm/Haz/Fab

kun + costa + budget striker such as perez or austin etc

    Bertrand - Chambers - N.Taylor
    Sanchez - Hazard - Siggy - Tadic
    Costa - Aguero - Austin

Myhil - Boyd - PVA - Moore (1.7 in the bank)

Want to bring Baines in but not at the sacrifice of Tadic

Baines is totally worth the sacrifice. Although I rate tad if you take away his magical 4 assist game what are you left with?

      Baines is Mr consistent

I'd get rid of Tadic if it allows you to get Baines, Tadic has horrible fixtures after this week.

I've already pulled trigger on welbeck to Austin.
Qpr have some great fixtures coming up, and with the return of wally and giroud I can see Danny boy being rotated. Plus his returns aren't that great.

Plus this way it gives me a but more cash for a midfield upgrade

I didn't see any quotes that actually made reference to an injury other than Fab saying he's not used to getting so much game time.

If I'm planning on ditching Fabregas next GW anyway, is it worth doing it this GW if he's a doubt? Could come back to bite me, but seems pointless having a potentially injured player if I'm getting rid the following week regardless.

Yeah, I'm planning Fabregas, Tadic and Welbeck -> Siggy, Chadli/Downing and Costa over the next 2 GWs, so thinking I may as well ditch Fabregas and keep Tadic for the Villa game.

My plan (pending International Break) is:

ADM, Schneiderlin, Berahino > Chadli, Boyd, Costa (0.5m left ITB)

this leaves me with a mid/upfront of:

    Chadli, Fabregas, Siggurddson, Sanchez, (Boyd)
    Welbeck, Costa, Aguero

All thoughts are welcome, even the negative ones.

You might want to reconsider ditching ADM if Fabregas is injured.

I wouldnt unless Fab is ruled out (and then I might still keep Pelle vs Villa and save a -4)

    Krul (Elliot)
    Baines Chambers Wilson (Duff Alcaraz)
    ADM Tadic Siggy Downing (Marney)
    Costa Aguero Pelle
    Bank: 1 FT and 2.9m

Any suggestions lads? I'm lost. Was going to bring Sanchez in for the hell of it but apart from ADM > Sanchez, it will require Tadic out with a hit.
