The Gameweek rolls on with a pair of Sunday afternoon Premier League encounters at the KC Stadium and Selhurst Park.

We start in South London, where Liverpool return to the scene of the crime – the venue where last season’s title hopes were slain after the Merseysider’s conceded a three-goal lead to Crystal Palace.

They arrive to take on the Eagles in a far different situation, struggling for form and without a strike force seemingly fit to lace the boots of either Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. The latter misses out once again for Brendan Rodgers’ side along with Mario Balotelli who is absent today with a groin problem. Rickie Lambert starts in the Liverpool attack, then, whilst in midfield Rodgers is without the industry of Jordan Henderson through illness. Joe Allen and Adam Lallana are drafted in as Emre Can drops to the bench.

Crystal Palace also make changes as Mile Jedinak returns from his suspension to displace the injured James McArthur in midfield. He drops to the bench along with Wilfried Zaha as Jason Puncheon earns a recall to the flank. Dwight Gayle also earns a start as Frazier Campbell surrenders his starting berth.

Later today, we focus on Tottenham’s attempts to win three points on Humberside as Mauricio Pochettino’s outfit take on Hull City in their own backyard. Fantasy managers will be looking to Harry Kane to take his opportunity up front and add to the growing arsenal of budget strikers available, whilst also hoping that claims of a Nacer Chadli knee injury prove off the mark.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thinking about Pelle>Austin with my FT, anything else needed? Not sure about keeping Bego but don't know if getting him out is worth a hit.

    Bego (Elliot)
    Baines, Dummet, Clyne, Wisdom, N.Taylor
    Fab, Siggy, Downing, Sanchez, Marney
    Pelle, Aguero, Costa

    1FT and 0.4ITB

I did but it would limit my keeper replacement choices, I was planning on replacing elliot to give me 2 keepers each week but taking bony would force me into replacing bego with a max 5.1m.

What to do with Southampton defense?

    a) Forster -> Courtois.
Holding Clyne for 1 week to prove his worth; if not then switch to Naylor the week after.

    b) Forster -> Fabianski
Holding Clyne for 1 week; else switch to Azpi the week after.

How many games do Cesc and Costa have to play without YC in order for the suspension to be dropped? And when is the next FA/Capital cup game for Chelsea? We all know they will pick up the YCs the league game before it.

Play ultra attacking football with one of the top strikers in the world = loadsa goals.

They've now removed the goals but not adjusted the woeful defending unfortunately, Brendan seems to believe it was the system and not Suarez. He needs to have a long think on that.

      1. Licky
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 5 months ago

He adapted Bielsa's tactics last season, and then dropped them this season, Suarez didn't tell the other players to press high or break fast, a massive loss but it doesn't excuse Rodgers reverting to the system he wrote a dossier on and failed with over about 2 seasons worth of games now.

            11 years, 5 months ago

He has too many problems, media, defensive coaching etc. When I heard that the reason he changed the system last season was because he went to a seminar by Bielsa when he was out of work I was a bit shocked, especially now because it makes you severely doubt his credibility as a manager, mostly because he couldn't make his belief on how football should be played work.

            1. Somalion
              • 16 Years
              11 years, 5 months ago

Aye, if you have a belief you need to make it work unless it is so batshit insane that it can't, even then I've seen some crazy tactics work in time. You can still see it in his transfer policy, he buys strange. Sometimes it is a hit, frequently it is not. It is a shame really. More so because the cracks were there for all to see last season but could be papered over with Suarez scoring well. Should have begun to remedy a number of these problems last January, contingency plan.

Sadly, this is not far from the truth. Although losing Sturridge has been a huge blow, we looked shaite before he got injured as well. What ive loved about Brendan is that he adapted away from his original thesis of "this is how i want to play" and adapted to a playstyle that actually worked. Now it seems hes holding on to the same way of play - but now we have Lambert instead of Suarez and everyone else is out of form.

He adapted intelligently last season, you're right. He made the most of what he has. Now he seems to have lost that intelligence. As well as some of his other decisions, ditching Reina and Agger was an utter calamity imo.

I think youre wrong. Agger didnt deliver in most games and his body just didnt work as well, proved by his eventual move to Brondby... Reina had 3-4 seasons on the decline and they picked up one of the more exciting prospects in the BPL and Reina was on too much money to have on the bench, considering his age a sale was pretty much the only option.

It is more than just what is on the pitch PB, Agger was a leader through and through. Look at his loyalty, refused to go to another PL club and instead went back home to Brondby when he could easily play in the PL, he wouldn't do that to Pool. You NEED players like that, players that love the club. Reina was similar, he adored Liverpool (something will be said of Barcelona but all Reina had ever said was that the only club he'd consider ever leaving Liverpool for were them which is pretty fair).

They bring in Migs who had a good season but it speaks volumes about the poor assessment of him, as we see now he is not at Reina's level at all imo.

            Pretty much that TM.

His issue I feel is he tries to be too clever with his purchases. Brings in Sturridge for a cheap enough fee and gets a great return (until injuries arise) leads him to play moneyball with other players. It has failed in many respects. Not entirely his fault as it is a board decision including himself but BR needs to take the earplugs out, the fat lady is singing and he needs to do something.

It's quite hard to justify calling his transfer strategy "moneyball". My autocorrect changes that to "moneybag" and that's much more suiting. He is buying players at wrong time (except for Sturridge, Sakho and Balotelli, although there is no such thing as the right time to buy Balotelli) for moneyball as he ends up paying for their top form last season and can only expect them to go worse (think of Lallana and others). Also, while he looks for less hyped players (Luis Alberto and such) he ends up paying as if they were wanted assets, which is not what moneyballers should do. So, if this is moneyball, he plays it wrong. Way wrong.

Moneyball has nothing to do with it. He prefers buying younger players to develop them himself. Also the club isnt in a position to pay freely for everyone and we also cannot get the most sought after players.

But this is moneyball CM (good to see you back btw).

Look at his justification for Balotelli, he said that he had done this all his career, look for players with talent locked in them and try to unlock it. Similar stuff with Coutinho (who has the talent, just no consistency).

This is Moneyball at a high level, instead of shelling out £50 million for a world class winger he shells out £20 something million for Lallana in the hope that he can further "unlock" even more skill (despite the fact that he is 26, there for some reason was a strange belief that Lallana had even more in him). So yes, he does play it wrong but he's trying, at least in certain instances, to get talented players that need "unlocking" for less.

I'll put it another way, if the likes of Balotelli or Coutinho or whomever had lived up to the "potential" that was attributed to them (not having a shot at Coutinho, have followed him for a long time and always thought he had a lot of talent) they'd look like absolute bargains. The issue is he's attributing more potential to certain players than there may be.

All I am saying, if that is moneyball for him, he is doing it wrong. He should be buying players who have right stats, but low end product and hype, with less money than they are worth. He is buying players with better end product than underlying stats, who have just peeked in form - Lallana and Lovren are the prime examples - and paying extra even for those who are not in top form - Luis Alberto the best example of this.

In fact, it looks like Sturridge was just a fluke buy and we just thought BR had done some statistical analysis on him, while he really doesn't do it at all.

Any moneyball stats nerd would have told you that Balotelli does not have any great potential in him already before BR bought him, and have been saying that he is delivering at Pool exactly what should be expected of him. He is only perhaps slightly under performing, but very slightly.

Coutinho is a mystery to me. I recall he was pretty damn good at Inter, and he has been nothing like that at Pool. I think there's something really wrong with how he manages the players too. Sakho is another main example of a great talent that he is ruining completely.

If the way FSG has handled the Red Sox here in America is any indication, they have been fearless in cutting bait on failed, overpriced superstars and have seen miraculous swings and roundabouts in the last few years.

Would love to see the Liverpool board empower BR to do the same and renovate everything in January.

Liverpool's best hope, I think, is for FSG to sell the club.

5th actually. It's beyond me how they can be that high the way they've done the things. They played well early on, just didn't convert shots and conceded from relatively few good chances that they let, and thus didn't get points, and everybody was sacking Pardew. Then they changed things for worse, and got a series of fluke points with untenable conversion rate and conceded just one in last 6 (all competitions) despite conceding loads of shots from primary sector in every match (bar against Leicester and Pool), and now everybody thinks Pardew is just great.

Afternoon gents. Currently ~30 ahead in my mini league and ranked around 2k. Thinking of taking an epic -12 hit (first hit of season) that i think will pay off over the xmas period. Would go from this:

    FORSTER (McCarthy)
    CHAMBERS Baines Dummett Duff Wisdom
    DOWNING Fabregas Sanchez Siggy Boyd
    WELBECK Aguero Costa

    To this...

    GUZAN (McCarthy)
    YUN Baines Dummett Duff Wisdom
    HAZARD Fabregas Sanchez Siggy Boyd
    AUSTIN Aguero Costa

Would leave me with 0 in bank so would probably have to make the change today with Haz and Chaz on the rise. I would be getting rid of Welbeck who is surely rotating with Giroud now. Forster -> Guzan who can play through to Jan. Chambers won't be nailed soon and think Hazard can explode.

The alternative would be to get Terry in as my third Chelsea player instead of Haz .... or DiMaria instead for 'coverage'

    All thoughts welcome. Cheers

looks like u are planning quite ahead which shows in your current rank. not sure if whether triple chelsea attackers would work though. We can see that chelsea is not manc/pool of last season, they do not win by 4 goals which justify having 3 attackers from the same team

Appreciate the feedback. Would you go DiMaria over Hazard then? Just think Haz goal threat is much greater and the more I watch United the less convinced I am of them.

ADM would also mean I could go Sakho instead of Austin up front.

Right, the most fickle barometer for this caliber of player, imo.
