Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

Pelle to Bony for a -4 worth it ?

Other strikers kun & Austin and no Siggy.

Am I right to presume that with the African Cup of Nations starting on the 17th Jan, then bony would still play GW 21 fixture on 10th Jan at home to west ham?
Just trying to work out how many fixtures I'll have him for thanks.

    Downing Sanchez Hazard Siggy (Boyd)
    Austin Aguero Ings

    1.0 left in the bank..

Big decisions to be made, with so little time. You obviously have better things to be doing with your Monday night, but please could you kindly spare a couple of minutes to feedback?

    A. Costa to Rooney
    B. Chadli to Downing
    C. Chadli & Sterling to Downing & Sanchez (-4)

    Krul, Gilks
    Baines, Bertrand, Chambers, Hutton, Wisdom
    Sterling, Fabregas, Chadli, Sigurdsson, Marney
    Costa, Aguero, Austin

    1 FT, 2.8 ITB.

I see my team going in the direction of Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, Sigurdsson, Boyd, Rooney Aguero, Austin in future weeks, and bringing a Chelsea defender in. I've not seen enough of Chelsea this season though to understand how involved Costa actually is.

I keep getting the impression that Hazard is going to burst to life at some point and overtake Fabregas, but it hasn't happened yet.

Cheers, food for thought. Do you think they'll bring in more points than Downing? He also has good fixtures and Barkley looked pretty deep against Spurs.

I picked Downing before he was popular on here and before his goal and assist. While that's a boast worthy of ol' Cloughie, I just prefer to try and predict player returns rather than pick a bandwagon and hope for continued returns. Doesn't always work, obviously, but more rewarding.

I have Cazorla and Mirallas as my midfield punts, at the minute.

Mixed response earlier so new opinion appreciated. Ta 🙂

Been tinkering with the idea of doing Costa to Boney for a while. Trouble is, it will cost me -4 and I will have to bench Jedi at home to Villa instead of Costa. I suppose the question is whether Bony will score 4 more than Jedi.

    1. Pea Soup
      • 14 Years

Bony is on fire. Palace won't get pens every week and Jedi might not bury a freekick like that for some time.

depends whether you will want costa back in the near future. Prince Bony could well score 4 more than jedi who is somewhat reliant on pens but then you also have Bony in for the long run.

True but Costa worries me, he is a red card waiting to happen, never gets baps and they tend to shut up shop once they have a lead

well if you think bony + freed funds spent elsewhere will get you more points, go for it. If it pays off, it will fire you up the rankings

Also a question of who will score more in the weeks after; Costa or Bony. Probably going to be Costa, I'd bench him and save the hit.

I have Krul & Foster (WBA!) with .4m itb.

    2 questions

    1. Do we think Sunderland can park the bus successfully 2 games running?

    2. How do we think Southampton will respond to the Man City result? In particular their defence. Sanchez worth the armband again or better options?

I've considered it...but I think he's just too inconsistent with points to be relied on....you need a big hitter in MF or at F if you're going to move ADM out.

He might be rotated, and Di Maria will return immediately when he's fit, so could be a dodgy one...

    Couple of quick questions:

Chadli owners: Are you keeping or selling?

Moreno > Azpi for -4 worth it? Rest of my defence is Baines, Naylor, Clyne, Moore.

Selling-- if he was fit this week, he would have played, now I fear he's lost his place. Can't wait while Eriksen turns on the points.

    What is the consensus here?

    A) sell Costa for Rooney
    B) sell Costa for Bony
    C) keep Costa

Pelle, Di Maria, Diamé, Lallana, PvA...not sure about Costa though, since players with ''red status'' drop slower.

Still sulking over benching Clichy, resulting in a 5 point return from other defenders, bellend!

So just sticking with kun captain. Bony appeals, sanchez always so but just putting it down to gut feeling and a touch of safety in numbers.
