Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

hopefully that move helps launch an attack on the top 500
bit of a differential and will get plenty of chances.

    Szczesny/Foster
    NTaylor/Baines/Chambers/Clichy/Wisdom
    Sanchez/Hazard/Siggy/Downing/Boyd
    Aguero/Costa/Austin

This Elliot news changes everything... Krulliot has served me well in recent weeks, but it might be time to break it up...

Kept my 2FTs for just this kind of revelation... was hoping to use it for attacking moves, but with the looming possibility of being left with 10 players, 1FT might need to be used to tighten up at the back...

    Would you:

    A - Keep Krulliot, have only 10 starters; it's only 1 GW...
    B - Krul > Fabianski
    C - Krul > Adrian
    D - Krul > Panti
    E - Krul > Guzan
    E - Someone else

A bit mate, got Oscar in for AdM. Doesn't look to good of pick, but will hope he hauls with the Costa absence. How's your hit dilemma working out?

Nice transfer, Oscar has looked sharp lately. I took the -8 last week which was absolutely stupid in hindsight, I've had a terrible 2 weeks. I've done ADM > Siggy this week and will probably get a Chelsea defender in for Moore if Duff doesn't start.

That's a great move Innsie, can't go wrong with Chelsea assets right now

Congrats on graduating uni ! ☺ my team is currently in a big state of mess due to the vast amount of injuries over the past 2 weeks. And also due to my exams and school which I'm struggling to cope with. How were your final exams? Your presence in the DZ will surely be missed around here! How do you think Costa - Rooney sound for a - 4? Else I'll have to play with 10 this week.

      1. President John F. Keninnsie
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 4 months ago

The injuries have been horrible haven't they? 🙁 Sometimes we're just plain unlucky. I was pondering the same transfer but I've decided to let Boyd come on instead of taking the hit. Since you'd only be playing with 10 if he's out, I'd be VERY tempted to go for it.

        1. HammersXI
          • 13 Years
          11 years, 4 months ago

Yeah. I'll been so unlucky with that. With Vlaar being red flagged and Krul. I have more red flags than players on my bench. I might just want to take a hit to field 11 and with Rooney's form it's soo tempting...will make a call before the price changes..

When you think about it isn't really a -4 in this situation. Assume appearance points and it is only a -2. I would do it to get a team out

Curious to know peoples thoughts on this for a starting 11, I know 3-5-2 is not too popular but I think it allows for a balance between consistency and explosiveness especially when you can captain Aguero by default

    Forster (looking to replace)
Ivano, Baines, (rotate Duff, Dummet, Wisdom)
    Hazard, Fabs, Sanchez, Eriksen, Siggy
    Aguero, Austin (Zamora)

Also looking to upgrade Eriksen to Silva after the inevitable disappointment

      1. Guidinho

Ive thought long and hard about the other big guns,

Costa - chosen to double Haz and Fabs as I think they are less trouble in terms of injuries/suspensions.
Bony - Think Siggy will be the source for most his points and is not at risk of rotation/ACN.
        Pelle - Crap
Giroud/Welbeck - Could be case of musical chairs with those two up top.
Lukaku - Tempramental and Europa league
Rooney - Probably the best option but I still think there are some ?? over LvG and where he sees him playing. When he is on form, as he is now, he can score but as this article says his threat level is lower than in previous seasons.
        RVP - Too expensive
        Sturridge - Knackered.

Rooney and Bony both much better options than Austin.

Not so far this season in terms of point or PPG (not to say that is indicative of future returns).

I don't really see a 6mil midfielder that would match Austin's output where as the options for 9+mil midfielders is abundant

I think ADM to Eriksen will be my transfer momentarily, too, and I also am braced for disappointment.

It's the bonus he gets when/if he does ANYTHING that forced my hand. It's double figures or nothing, basically. I'll take that risk.

He is a mid term hold otherwise you risk missing the good games, reminds me of Hazard with a bunch of 2s or double digits

Ok, so I've settled on a defensive transfer...

    Heaton Foster

    Clyne Bertrand Naylor Moore Yun

Question now is whether I should switch a Saints defender or Moore out. If it's a Saints defender and Yun isn't fit I could be left with only Boyd as playing cover on my bench.

I've seen it mentioned a few times about Azpilicueta being rested. But with Azpilicueta being able to play right back and ivanovic being able to play centre back any one of the four could be rested.

If you believe that premise then you have to consider the age of the players involved and the minutes played. I'm not able to research it fully but in premier league and champions league Azpilicueta has played 591 minutes (6.5 games out of a total of 18) less than ivanovic and that doesn't take into account European qualifiers of which Azpilicueta hasn't played any. More work is needed but I'm sure it'll show that it's not Azpilicueta who is due a rest.

I don't think there is any more threat of rotation for Azpi than the rest of the back four... the fact that he doesn't play UCL (witht he exception of last week), IMO indicates that he is actually more likely to play every PL game when fit...

In hindsight, selling Costa hasn't worked out well in the past, in fact it almost destroyed my team and took an 8pt hit to fix it... (what the hell was I thinking with Adebayor!)

Maybe this Elliot news is a sign that I should keep him and focus of defensive changes only...

I haven't sold Costa before but I understand how they felt. I was on the verge of selling him before his big goal tally against Everton. At least if you are thinking of replacing him with someone in the similar price range you would have enough money to bring him back in again.
