Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

Chelsea look pretty formidable at the moment, are capable of huge scorelines and will likely win the league. Why are people ditching their lead striker when he can pop up with 3-4 goals at any time?

because he hasn't popped up with them in nearly 3 months despite playing the likes of Villa, Palace, QPR, WBA, Sunderland and Liverpool in that time..

Brwaking the rule and captaining Baines might anger the FPL gods. But he's a great option this week no doubt. You think its too risky to (c) Haz over Kun or Rooney?
            Thanks again.

Nah Haz is a good option with Costa out, he seems to do better without him in the side. All three of them are good picks tbh, I captained Haz last week which has put me off captaining him this week ( 😆 ) but he could easily explode against a poor spurs defence.

I'd be surprised if he made it. Would prefer Cresswell to Clichy.

would have very short term benefits if any. Kolarov expected back this weekend so expect rotation

What was your ploy 🙂 I can't stand this new thing this season. Just give us the Scout picks on a Friday night. All this other stuff is just pointless.
They know it themselves after "downgrading" it to a separate post.

Of course. It was good the way it was. Jonty, Mark, Gran, Paulos etc. etc. have brilliant FPL pedigree. I much preferred their combined picks on a Friday night than some random popularity contest from posters.
I don't even know what I'm looking at when the article is posted. 3, 4 or 5 different people giving their best 11s for the week..... just doesn't work, imo.

Fair enough. The old Scout Picks were a bit of a headache behind the scenes with a lot of discussion etc. This way is certainly easier but I agree the community aspect could be done differently. The combined one in the top corner is practically what you got last season. You just don't get an article about 11 players like you did.

Injuries among Newcastle back line seems a perfect condition for our Boyd to shine again. With many managers are forced to play him this week, I think I should also play him and bench Kane who will face Chelsea defence unit.

I asked here yesterday and most responses thought Kane might be better option. Not sure if those injuries, eg. Coloccini, Williamson, Heidara, Krul, might change your mind.

Those price changes have scuppered any potential double transfer of Costa > Rooney and Downing > Eriksen... Couldn't bring myself to take an 8 point hit having already made my transfer for this week

    Two questions.

    1. Does anyone concern about the playing time of Azpi? With tight fixture coming up I reckon Mourinho might rotate his squad and Azpi being one of the rotation victim.

    2. Do you think it's too heavy or over to have Baines and Iva at the back?

Mourinho doesnt really like to roate his team even when it's looks like he should. Also what with Azpi already having reduced gametime from not playing chamions league and his suspension, I would say Mou might give some others a breather instead

      1. It's certainly possible. All of the back four have a risk of rotation, but for me Azpi has the most risk. This was one of the reasons I bought Terry, along with more goal threat.

      2. I wouldn't, but if the rest of your team is balanced its fine. Ivan does not justify his price tag imo.

Well thats debatable. But yes in my eyes he does, Chelsea spent a lot on Felipe Luis, he will surely get some premier league minutes this month, whether it be in place of Azpi or not.
