Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

Howdy folks! Thankfully didn't ge hurt too much with my ADM (C) last week but looking to ship him and Costa out for a hit because I don't think my bench will suffice.

    Which is the best option?

    a) Hazard + Rooney

    b) 8.4M MID + Kun (annoyingly 0.1M short of Oscar!)

I'd do A. If your bench is terrible then it should easily cover the hit and it's quite easy to get Costa IF he starts hitting his early season form

Missed the earlier post about somebody asking whether to get Kane in this week..

    My take on it..

Kane is a fantastic pick, and looked great with Soldado, and I'm certain that Poch will be doing that again very regulary... But...If there is one game in the calendar when Poch, or anybody, might choose not to play with two forwards it's the next one away to Chelsea. I'm not saying Kane won't play (or Soldado) bit you can be certain Poch will be giving it a good coat of thinking about...One more week for Kane imo..

Fair point Wakey. Though if someone wants to replace a striker that won't be playing like Costa or Sakho no point in waiting

    2. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 4 months ago

I agree there is a good chance of Kane not playing. The only thing going in his favor is that he was rested for their EL game on Thursday and only played 20ish minutes while Soldado started it. If anything I think it is most likely that Kane is given the role as lone forward over Soldado. Still a chance Kane doesn't feature though I agree.

They really could have done with a more straight forward fixture after their great showing last week. On the other hand Poch may well decide to give it a go...Just a tricky call is all I'm saying.

Well if you sacked up and brought Kane in earlier you wouldn't be faced with this dilemma. Surely it is madness to bring him in right now anyway with the worst fixture of the season on the horizon. Might as well wait.

I would have under normal circumstances but Austin and Bony had the fixtures to compete...if not the price...No risk at all for them.

Yeah was actually surprised to see how few goals hes scored this season. A couple assists and bonus would be just fine for a captain though. Not so sure they'll keep a clean sheet but if they did that's an extra two as well. Potential to be a good pick but I'm sticking with Aguero personally. Bony is a good one if you have him, I picked up Austin instead of him this week though

I'm on the same boat, looks like a great prospect when he builds his way up to the full 90.
Full of FPL potential, but Martinez plays around too much. Mirallas does have Hull, city & QPR though in a span of 12 days. Who knows when or if he'll get rested in between.

It's between him & Eriksen for me, no clear cut choice for now it seems. Especially as Eriksen is playing at the bridge on Wednesday

Play Wisdom or Naylor this week?

Main rival will play Wisdom and Ive just overtake him so should I play Wisdom too even though their defensive stats are awful?!

Ignore what your rival is doing...way to early in the season! Go with who you think will score more (i.e. Naylor)

Surely Hutton is more likely to keep a clean sheet, then Boyd is to score or create?

Collectively easier for Villa to keep a clean sheet than Boyd personally delivering?

I'd probably rather start Boyd. Palace seldom shut out at home. Probably not much in it though.

Feel a sudden urge to put Terry in for Bertrand for a hit. I know I should wait till next gw but this gut feeling aint going away.

      Eh?

But the hit would negate Terry's cleansheet even if he got one and Bertrand could still get one yet.
You would need attacking returns from Terry for that hit to pay off.

Saints would have to get battered while Chelsea keep a CS and Terry scores/assists for that to work out.

I know that, it doesnt make much sense. Maybe its my Spurs pessimism setting in thinking Terry could get double digits.

Not really, Saints could lose even 1-0 and Terry cleanie and it's a successful transfer.

Making transfers is the most exciting part of this game! We should have 2 FT's every week. More potential for regrets and to mess up your team.

NO! Can't stand, Austin. More of a thug than Costa. I know that shouldn't affect my decision making but in this case...

Plus West Brom's fixtures ease up considerably here on in. No game is easy for West Brom but Berahino should get on the end of more chances.

      Thanks though, Doos 😉

You should never let personal feelings affect your FPL decisions. Case in point 'Senior Biteyourarmoff' cost me big time last year!

I know, I know, but I just can't in this instance. There's little rhyme or reason as I didn't have any problem having Suarez in my team last year, and I have nothing against transferring in Barton, for example. I must have dodgy morals!

would say so.. he is due some points, playing decent again now. 2 easy games, then utd and arsenal.. then a run of 5/6 very nice looking fixtures - will look at gettting him back..
