Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening as Fantasy managers quickly turn their attentions to the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

After his midweek demolition of Sunderland, Sergio Aguero is head and shoulders above any other candidate as City prepare for the visit of Everton. Selected by 52% of voters so far, the Argentine – in spite of his superb season – has surprisingly blanked in three of his six home appearances and has managed only one double-figure haul at the Etihad to date. The Toffees roll up to Manchester in poor defensive form, though – without a clean sheet on their travels all season, Roberto Martinez’ side have conceded in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both fancied to deliver the goods away to Newcastle. Costa has delivered more yellow cards than goals on the road (five to four) and has notched just once in his last three away trips but having missed out due to suspension in midweek, he’ll be raring to go against the injury-hit Magpies. Hazard has yet to score on his travels this season – indeed, the Belgian has managed only two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season and has blanked in each of his last four appearances on the road.

Charlie Austin’s superb home form brings the QPR top scorer into consideration, with 7% of the votes cast. The budget striker has racked up four goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road and, up against a Burnley side with a single clean sheet on their travels, he’s looking for a third 10+ points haul in front of his own fans which would fire the R’s out of the drop zone.

After netting Villa’s winner at Palace on Tuesday evening, Christian Benteke is amongst the favourites for a plum home clash with Leicester. The Foxes arrive without suspended skipper Wes Morgan and look unlikely to improve a defensive record which has seen them keep out their opponents in just one of the last 10 Gameweeks.

Alexis Sanchez is also in contention as the Gunners roll up to Stoke. Unlike Chelsea’s Hazard, the Chilean has delivered on the road – four of his nine league goals have arrived outside of the Emirates, suggesting he could be a real differential against a Potters side with a single shut-out since Gameweek 3.

I don't think I can decide until the last moment. Who to bench out of Baines, Chambers and Hutton as I only want to play 3 defenders and Azpi is definitely starting. Defence below.

    Azpi (away vs New)
    Baines (away vs City)
    Chambers (away vs Stoke)
    Hutton (home vs Lei)
    Naylor (suspended)

Hutton has the obvious cs potential, chambers may get a cs - Baines definitely won't. With Mirallas in the side you're banking on a peno for Baines if you play him basically.

Another way I like to look at it is to treat Baines as a 7 million midfielder. Since he's in forward positions very often whacking in crosses, and on set pieces and penalties.

I'm not keen to bench him myself, most likely it will be Hutton on the bench.

    Best option here?

    A) Krul -> Guzan
    B) Krul & Bony -> Guzan & Austin/Kane
    C) Albrighton & Bony -> Eriksen & Kane

I'd normally be massively against double Spurs attack, but CPL and BUR in the next 3 look ripe, and Kane is cheap enough to bench next week.

Having said that, B) enables Baines next week and A) keeps a freebie rolled over.

    Elliot
    Terry, Chambers, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, Siggy
    Aguero, Costa, Bony

I was having this debate a couple months back when Baines was first starting to string together big scores.

My argument was that defenders should be chosen on CS potential, anything else is a bonus (assists, goals, baps). And many argued back thst Baines isn't picked for CS, he is picked for his attacking threat and set pieces.

And now everyone wants to bench?

And i think you don't have the right to ask them to sell as in "All those benching Baines, you may as well sell"...
Each team has it's own circumtance, what if i say the one benching Baines with money ITB 10m and playing Hutton ahead of Baines?

I'm playing Baines and benching Clyne though

I bought him for his attacking threat, basically assist and goal (mainly peno) threat. His assist and open play goal threat has been greatly diminished by Mirallas; he even takes corners and fks away from baines. So yea, not sure what to do.

Thats just ridicolous. Its pretty much a guarantee that Everton wont keep a cleanie. Most likely Everton wont get anything from the game. While City hardly are keeping it tight at the back, its a pretty tall order to produce at the Ethihad. There are plenty of games after this one thats attractive. And only speaking for myself, i had the cs in mind when i picked him up. Its the rest of the "Baines effect" that made me pay the extra dough for him. I would never have paid £7m for Baines if he played for Hull.

I don't really see what everyone's problem is. He's basically got a 90% chance of 2 points or less. Certainly benchable if your other options are better.

Sorry muppet but I must disagree regarding Fellaini. I think he offers a lot more to United than Herrera does. United are not like before, SAF used to play near tidy football, where as United of recent have to play scrappy and grind out games.

Fellaini is the perfect man for that, and don't see him being dropped for Herrera, Carrick, or any other midfielder for that matter.

I'm not saying he's their best midfielder, just saying that LVg has shown his trust in him and I think that will continue as the season progresses, or until he does something stupid and gets a red..

I think it will be Fellaini and Blind in the middle when all are fit. Utd look better with this solidity as opposed to the diamond they were playing earlier in the season

I prefer Yun to Caulker simply due to cost. We struggle to keep cleanies so QPR defenders really should be bench fodder.

    Team is

    Guzan
    Chambers Terry Yun
    Hazard Fabs Sanchez Siggy
    Bony Aguero Austin

    Boyd Wisdom Naylor

Worth doing Fabs and Bony to Eriksen and Costa -4? Or save a Ft this week?!

0.1 in the bank, 2 free transfers, what to do with these problem players?

    Moore
    Krul,
    Marney,
    Lambert.

Is Moore and Lambert to Yun and Austin too much?

Any advice on this current lot. Good to go OR....

    1) Should swap Cahill with Azpi?
    2) Swap Rooney + Yaya for Aguero + Eriksen?

    1ft 0ITB

    Fabianski
    Hutton Cahill(75%) Baines(ManC) Clichy(Eve)
    Sanchez Yaya(Eve) Siggy
    Rooney(75%) Costa(C) Austin

    Krul Boyd Jedinak Clyne

    Cheers!

Thanks John! Kun is very tempting.

The only way is to swap Yaya + Rooney > Eriksen + Kun.

How about Cahill, should i replace him with Azpi?

Yeah I would - the Cahill one would then be for a hit?

Reposting as it's the DZ - hoping for a few more views

Your advice if I may? Got a Costa kitty (3.8m) and 1FT but not sure what to do with it?

    A) Moore to Azpi - would rule out getting Costa in
    B) Moore to Hutton
    C) Save transfer and have 2 frees to deal with Baines/Costa next week

Defence looks OK this week but not sure who to play

Fab Clyne Yun Chambers Wisdom Moore
    Haz Sanchez Siggy Oscar Obertan
    Kun Bony Austin

    B)Hutton

    Fabianski (whu)

Chambers (stk) - Baines (mci) - Wisdom (hul)

Hazard (new) - Barkley (mci) - Yaya (EVE) - Bolasie (tot)

Austin (BUR) - Aguero (EVE) - Costa (new)

Subs Elliot - Clichy - Bartley - Marney

What to do? 1 FT and 0.1 in bank..

I want to get rid of Barkley but no-one else appeals to me...

is he going to start over Clichy? If you don't fancy him I'd bench him this week and deal with it next when you have the flexibility of two transfers.
