Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening as Fantasy managers quickly turn their attentions to the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

After his midweek demolition of Sunderland, Sergio Aguero is head and shoulders above any other candidate as City prepare for the visit of Everton. Selected by 52% of voters so far, the Argentine – in spite of his superb season – has surprisingly blanked in three of his six home appearances and has managed only one double-figure haul at the Etihad to date. The Toffees roll up to Manchester in poor defensive form, though – without a clean sheet on their travels all season, Roberto Martinez’ side have conceded in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both fancied to deliver the goods away to Newcastle. Costa has delivered more yellow cards than goals on the road (five to four) and has notched just once in his last three away trips but having missed out due to suspension in midweek, he’ll be raring to go against the injury-hit Magpies. Hazard has yet to score on his travels this season – indeed, the Belgian has managed only two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season and has blanked in each of his last four appearances on the road.

Charlie Austin’s superb home form brings the QPR top scorer into consideration, with 7% of the votes cast. The budget striker has racked up four goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road and, up against a Burnley side with a single clean sheet on their travels, he’s looking for a third 10+ points haul in front of his own fans which would fire the R’s out of the drop zone.

After netting Villa’s winner at Palace on Tuesday evening, Christian Benteke is amongst the favourites for a plum home clash with Leicester. The Foxes arrive without suspended skipper Wes Morgan and look unlikely to improve a defensive record which has seen them keep out their opponents in just one of the last 10 Gameweeks.

Alexis Sanchez is also in contention as the Gunners roll up to Stoke. Unlike Chelsea’s Hazard, the Chilean has delivered on the road – four of his nine league goals have arrived outside of the Emirates, suggesting he could be a real differential against a Potters side with a single shut-out since Gameweek 3.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

But in theory, they could still win the group, if Anderlecht wins at Dortmund or if Anderlecht draws and Arsenal wins Gala by six or more at Istanbul.

So, they're pretty cemented to the second spot and could well do without dragging all important players to Istanbul.

The glimpse of hope for winning the group is that Dortmund is in deep trouble in Bundesliga, currently the bottom of the table, and could rotate heavily against Anderlecht. Anderlecht is sure to take the third place in the group, but I'm also sure that they give their everything in CL matches.

😆 I remember when Ozil first came over, Wenger managed his gametime very selectively over Xmas schedule, likely to do something similar with Sanchez you'd think

          • 12 Years
          11 years, 14 days ago

I can't remember what Ozil's game time was like to be honest. I think every manager will just have to play it by ear, player by player. Sanchez though is very fit, and very important, so I'd say he's better placed than most.

Pushed him too far. Ozil was a bad signing imo who just can't cut it physically in this league. Great player, wrong league...

Unfortunately to Arsenal, this is what has happened historically.

Sanchez will be able to play a lot longer than Özil, before breaking, but Wenger was already able to break Giroud, who is super fit, and I'm sure he'll find his way with Sanchez too.

That would be assuming we were 2 or 3 goals up, which we rarely manage nowadays. And if we have scored 2 or 3, Sanchez will have no doubt been involved, so still not worth getting rid.

    B) Albrighton > Boyd
    C) Ayoze > Ings (or even Lambert)

Not glamorous I know but any thoughts are welcome

    I'll take any advice going.

    Fabianski
    Baines, Chambers, Azpi
    Sterling, Mirallas, Hazard, Downing
    Costa, Austin, Pelle

    Siggy, Wisdom, Dummett

    1. Baines + Pelle = 5.0 def + Aguero -4
    2. Sterling + Pelle = 5.0 mid + Aguero -4
3 Hold and pray he blanks?

By way of payment I offer this: QPR @ 11-10

Two schools of thought on Benteke (a) he is rusty, not match-sharp yet and won't be at his best, or (b) he will hit the ground running and be fresh while others need rest in this busy period. I'm gambling on theory (b)...

    Hi guys any advice please?

    Guzan - (Jaku)

    Wisdom - Azpil - Baines - (NTaylor - Duff)

    Sanchez - Hazard - Downing - Siggy - (Obertan)

    Costa - Aguero (C) - Austin

I have 0.4 ITB, thinking of doing:

    * Baines - Kosc
    * Duff - Clichy

    What do you think??

City hardly keep clean sheets and clichy won't score again

I know, Ben said last night that he expected good news about Walcott and said a few days ago that Debuchy would be out for the month...Wrong on both accounts

Best 4.5 or under mid except boyd. (Play in a draft league and boyd is taken)

Had a couple of poor weeks after a number of good ones and im tempted to WC.

At the moment I'm working with

    Krul/Foster
    Baines/Chambers/Wisdom/Dummett/Duff
    Sanchez/Fabregas/Siggy/Wanyama/Downing
    Bony/Aguero/Costa

    I couldwildcard and get to...

    Pantilimon/Foster
    Baines/Chambers/Azpi/Yun/Wasilewski
    Sanchez/Hazard/Siggy/Boyd/Downing
    Austin/Aguero/Costa

I'm thinking its not worth it and to save the WC for later on in the season, but I keep coming back to this option.

    Advice hugely welcome!
